I remember watching an old interview with Elvis, probably in the early 70's or so, and the interviewer asked him who he thought was the best between him and Roy Orbison, Elvis didn't even pause and said "Roy Orbison is the best singer in the world" . High praise from the king :)

I was lucky enough to see Roy Orbison live in the UK in the 80s. Having grown up with and loving his voice since the 60s, just before he came on stage I had a panicked moment of "what if my hero doesn't sound as good as he did years ago on the records?". Roy came on, said hello and started singing . . . I closed my eyes and was transported back to the 60s and listening to the same song on the jukebox! His voice was still pure gold 👏👏👏❤
A masterpiece released by Roy in 1961. A song without a chorus, the lyrics, arrangement and vocals all gradually build to a climax in this song. The exaggerated dynamics, with the exceptional strings and orchestral build up drove this song to Number 1. It was the last song he sang live in a Cleveland venue, 2 days later we lost a brilliant singer. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Craig. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Roy chose to use his natural voice for that last high A. He'd already done two takes in a falsetto that he wasn't happy with, and he made a snap decision to use his natural voice. I also recommend It's Over. Another one of his
To give you an idea of how great Roy Orbison was and the respect his colleagues had for him, for Elvis Presley himself, he was "the sweetest and most melodious voice" in the world. I could not agree more. When he sings, everything stops, the world is calm.
I don’t have to imagine…I lived that generation. I became a teenager in 1956. The big band era was behind us. “Swing” came into vogue giving rise to what became known as the “bobby soxers”. Combine those movements with a drop dead gorgeous face, smoldering eyes and lips you wanted to taste, well, as was stated in the movie “Elvis”…we “wanted to eat him alive!” He awakened thoughts and feelings we shouldn’t have had at such a young age. Those thoughts and feelings have stayed with many for 67 years. As John Lennon said “Before Elvis there was nothing.” From Elvis we had Roy Orbison who sends chills up my spine while tears are forming in my eyes (no one like him & never will be), the Everly Brothers (you can’t make perfection more perfect) and many others. Yes, I am so very grateful for being a part of the generation Roy Orbison inspired. A generation whose music will continued to be played for decades to come.
Elvis and Roy Orbison were great friends. They actually jammed together quite often at Graceland. After hearing Roy Orbison for the first time, Elvis said he never wanted to follow him on stage. He always called Roy the best singer in the world. What I admired most about Roy Orbison was his humility.
I saw Roy, live, twice, second row from the stage both times. His lips opened about 1/2 an inch, at the most, and belted out the most amazing sound I have ever heard from a singer. What a gift.
On tour, Roy does an encore of that song, and goes even higher!!! Unbelievable!! ... And he was known as being one of the nicest men in the music industry!!! Love that wonderful guy and his voice!! Just so darn attractive!!
Loved your reaction! Roy recorded an incredible concert around 1988 shortly before he died. It’s called “A Black and White night” You should hear him sing Running Scared live on THAT performance! It’s incredible! Also, on Black & White Night, backing him up but obviously in awe of him were Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, k.d. lang, and many others! You should definitely check it out. It’s amazing! Thank you, enjoy your reactions! 😀
Couldn't agree more with that performance and that whole concert. Hopefully Harri sees your comment and can take the time to watch that performance. What a special night that was; so thankful it was captured on film. Thanks for the great comment!
Roy Orbison had one of the most smooth powerful voices. He could sing real high falsetto & also low. Elvis Presley loved Roy's voice. Roy had lots of hits in the 60's such as "Crying", "In Dreams", "Love Hurts", "Blue Bayou", "Candyman", "Uptown" etc. In 1988, he co-founded the Traveling Wilburys (a rock supergroup) with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, & Jeff Lynne.
All of Roy Orbison’s “Essential Hits” are a must. “Crying”, “It’s Over”, “Only the Lonely”, And Harri, the video clips on YT of “A Black and White Night” has in the band Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, KD Lang, an orchestra and many stars. The whole concert is fascinating and truly entertaining. A rare thing, indeed.
True enjoyment is watching Roy on youtube at the Coconut Grove in the Black and white Night performance and backing him up were folks before they hit bigtime ,like KD Lang,Elvis Costello,Bruce Springstein ,TomWaits, and the great James Burton on back-up lead guitar. Even Elvis Presley claimed Roy to be the best singer in the business and once introduced Roy on stage as being the true king of rock and roll.
I saw Roy in concert in Miami just about a year before he died. When he did "Running Scared", with the repeat ending, the audience went crazy. Best concert ever!
Who today has the pure talent that Orbison and those in his era had then? Too many singers today rely on enhanced vocals to make themselves sound better, (than some of them are). How can anyone say these kinds of recordings are old had? Some of today's singers could take a lesson out of the book of past greats.
Always loved the sound and look of Roy Orbison..from a child growing up in the 70s, i remember the sound of his voice and the look, you know the dark suit with the shades..seemed mystical to me. The voice..stayed with me. no-one like him before or since. Apparently an absoulute gentleman ...genteel, kind and well mannered. He just stood there and hardly opened his mouth, but the sound . Boy Dylan when part of the Trvelling Wilbury's said that Roy's voice sent shivers down his spine. "Man that voice" he said. It has been said that grown men have cried lsitennng to Roy's voice.
i was 10 when his first song hit...saw him live around 1980 in hamilton, ontario and, incredibly, he sounded better in person. if you wanted to hurt and bleed after a breakup, orbison sounded like he was singing directly to you. he toured britain and performed on the same stage as the beatles before they became THE BEATLES world wide famous....he was the star and was supposed to close. after he heard them he told them they should. beatles never forgot that. i saw ringo star on a talk show quite a few years ago--arsenio hall?--and he said, 'everybody was in awe of the beatles. who awed the beatles?' and ringo said, 'roy orbison'.....
Thanks for pointing out how close Roy and Elvis sound so much alike....Im 68 years old and been loving their music all my life....I guess I wasnt listming close enough....Good Job Harri...
Elvis and Roy , Jerry Lee Lewis , and Johnny cash , came from the same studio in the 50s , Sun Records , Memphis . ,🎸💯Love from Scotland ❣️ great reviews harri .
You are an incredibly beautiful soul, young man. You managed to capture the essence of Roy Orbison. He could start out slow and reach a crescendo, leaving one almost exhausted and yet energized and searching for another song to listen to. As a teenager, I stood at the Jukebox Shrine and offered up my 'allowance' coins to this artist and others like him. Those were good days. (Hmmm... I'm rather liking the term "Jukebox Shrine." 😁
I had the privilege many (many) years ago of going to a Roy Orbison concert and he was indescribable. Every note perfect. He was such a talented song writer & singer - every song told a story. If you haven't heard his songs "Blue Angel" or "In Dreams" - they're both incomparable.
So many of the reactors use cuts from a oncert very late in Orbisons life ......his original recordings are the best showing of Orbisons vocal range ...Glad yu used an original recording .....
Elvis famously said that Roy had the most beautiful voice he had ever heard. But much less known was Roys next door neighbor as a teen said the same thing. That neighbor was Johnny Cash. Talk about references!
This type of music structure is called a Bolero, and it originated in Cuba. The boleros are usually about failed love affairs or betrayals. Ravel's Bolero is probably the most famous. It was used in the 1979 movie "10" with Dudley Moore, Bo Derek, and Julie Andrews.
I'm unsure if it's true but supposedly when Elvis was asked how it felt to be the greatest singer he replied, "I don't know. Go Ask Roy Orbison." One difference between them is Roy wrote most of his own hits while Elvis didn't write songs.

Roy was one of the first songwriters in popular music to 'break the rules'. You're 'supposed' to have a song structure where you have verses, a chorus and maybe a middle eight, or something along those lines. He usually did that (think 'Pretty Woman'), but this song is just a few verses of one type, and then a second section that I"m not even sure how to categorize. 'In Dreams' is the best example - it's just one part leading to another part, and I have no idea how you'd categorize each little section. He didn't care about what anyone thought he was suppsoed to do, he wrote what came to him and what felt right.
😮I have never thought of Roy Orbison and Elvis Presley as being similar in any way. This is not a musical talent contest; but rather a simple matter of taste. I have never been fond of much of anything Presley sang to be anything that made me want to scream and jump about..while I have never found Orbison less than completely enchanting in every way….
I have never seen a reaction to one of my all time favorite Roy Orbison songs. And it's a great one. It's called Mama. Please do a reaction of it. You won't be disappointed. "Thanks"
A friend of mine had a recording from Sun Studios that did some the earliest rock recordings where it is Johnny Cash, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Roy Orbison just hanging out in the studio drinking beers and playing each other's songs. It's one of the coolest recordings I've heard, but no one seems to know of it. You can hear them opening beer bottles with caps hitting the floor as they joke around and learn to play one another's songs. It really puts you in the room with them in a 1950's jam session with legends. They certainly were all friends and learned from one another. Elvis has said that Roy had the best voice in music and Johnny Cash was Roy's next-door neighbor. I think Roy sounds a lot like Elvis with his low notes, but Elvis could never hit Roy's high notes particularly with such power.
Elvis and Roy knew each other back in the early days. They both got their start at Sun Records in Memphis back in the day. Sam Philipps recorded them both.
Funny You brought up Elvis...They were good friends and Roy was going to open for him. Elvis told him he was to good to open for him,and replaced him. No hard feelings, all good...Elvis Loved his voice ❤️
About a year before Roy passed, I saw him at a small theater in Worcester, Ma. Before he entered, he was standing outside, quietly smoking a cigarette. Sorry I didn't thank him for his great music! RIP Roy, you brought us great joy........
I'm a new subscriber, 81 yo, very much love your reactions I grew up with so many of these older singers and your reactions have left me smiling, thank U!
Roys concerts were the best i see him live afew times 60 70 80 and each time was pure magic better than his records live was awesome goosebumps all the time even the rockers and bikers loved him to bits i listen every day and still get tears in my eyes just talent magic
Among my Created Playlists are ones for The Big Build, and Tearjerkers. I just realised they are the poorer without this one. Added. I'm old enough to remember hearing his hits on the radio at the time.
My Dad is a huge Big O fan, and he played Roy's music every Saturday morning. Roy's music was what made me love strings and orchestration in rock and pop. I'm grown up, and I listen to Roy on Saturday mornings now, myself.
Roy and Elvis were good friends. going back to the Sun Records days (Johnny Cash was Roy's best friend and neighbor in Tennessee). Roy said that they would hang out, listen to records and drink Cokes. After Elvis died, Roy wrote a tribute song, Hound Dog Man.
Recorded at Studio B in Nashville in the "old-fashioned" way, with everyone playing live for each take. The engineer was having a hard time keeping the musicians from burying Roy's voice, so they fashioned a crude sound booth out of coat racks and put Roy and his microphone behind it. Darned if it didn't work!
Love your reaction Harri 🥰. My older brothers were fortunate to see Roy O live around the time of this incredible song was recorded, this concert took place in a small community Arena in Edmonton, Alberta 🇨🇦& I think Diana Ross & The Supremes were there as well ! I am still amazed that these incredible singers actually came to our small northern town in Canada back in 1961 , 💎💜💎💓
another terrific reaction Harri, and don't worry about your "over enthusiasm" every now and then I'll catch a reviewer, probably a very nice guy (they're almost always men) who sit there completely stone faced then at the end will say something like "well that was a good one" which to me is no reaction at all. I may have mentioned I DJ some weekends and I'll put this on every now and then and you would be amazed at how many early 20's people will come up to me and tell me how much they would love to hear some songs like this today. Good music is timeless, and Roy was one of the best, have a good day
Someone once asked Elvis what it was like to have the world's greatest voice.....he said "You need to ask Roy Orbison".
@@CA-rl1hg He was telling the truth about Roy, I think he really believed it.
Because it was true.humble of Elvis being so honest
Ever humble Elvis! IMO Elvis had the #1 greatest voice of all time and Roy held an impressive second place!
Barry Gibb described him as the voice of God
And Elvis said he wouldn’t be on same stage with him..
He sang the last chord in full voice, not falsetto . He said he needed to sing it that way, so it would always be the same at live performances.
“Elvis was bigger than life. His success was documented and laid out for him. He came to the first show I had in Memphis, and it was very nice. He sort of treated me like an equal, because we were both fresh in the business.
We got to be great friends and kindred souls”

This isn’t a song. It is an experience…every time I hear it.
It sure is!
One of the all time greats!
He is the greatest! Love Roy.........😍❤💯
Roy Orbison avait demandé à Elvis d’interpréter « Only the lonely » mais Elvis refusa, Elvis a dit que seul Roy Orbison peut interpréter cette musique.

Elvis would never follow Orbison on stage. He could never compete with his voice and Elvis knew it.
I was lucky enough to see Roy Orbison live in the UK in the 80s. ❤👍🥰 Know the song but never thought of it that way 🧐😀🥰
You’re welcome!
The buildup and the fact that the story is not complete until the last word is sung - magnificent.
Great choice! A voice like no other! The song is so great it builds up to such a incredible creshendo and ending! Just incredible!!
Roy chose to use his natural voice for that last high A. He'd already done two takes in a falsetto that he wasn't happy with, and he made a snap decision to use his natural voice.
I also recommend It's Over.

A similar song is The Comedian written by Elvis Costello. It's performed in the Black and White Show.
I’m 73 and grew up listening to him. I still play his music on a weekly basis. Love the guy.

Imagine if you can, living the generation that Orbison inspired...he was phenomenal
I don’t have to imagine…I lived that generation. I became a teenager in 1956. The big band era was behind us. “Swing” came into vogue giving rise to what became known as the “bobby soxers”. Vocal groups like the Ink Spots, the Platters and “crooners” with their soft intimate singing had us dreamy eyed. We were falling in love with Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, etc. We put Lawrence Welk on the back burner and watched “Your Hit Parade”. The new sounds were fantastic!
I was just in Sun studio tour last week, standing in the room where all that music was recorded was magical.
Funny You brought up Elvis...They were good friends and Roy was going to open for him.
Elvis told him he was to good to open for him,and replaced him.
No hard feelings, all good...Elvis Loved his voice ❤️
I saw him in concert a couple of times...but my favorite was a bar in Birmingham...😊😊😊 it was as if he was singing to each one of us individually😊!
This was a huge hit. Love the Bolero effect of the instrumentation .
That last note he hits is heart stopping!
This man definitely has carved a forever niche in all the minds of those who have heard his unique voice and beautiful music...great job Harri
Roys concerts were the best i see him live afew times 60 70 80 and each time was pure magic better than his records live was awesome goosebumps all the time even the rockers and bikers loved him to bits i listen every day and still get tears in my eyes just talent magic
You're correct. Amps and speakers cannot replicate such a voice in a natural way, just as with Jim Reeves which I heard in 1964 in Norway.
I can close my eyes and see my beautiful parents gliding on the dance floor.
Thanks for the memories
Great music, great lyrics, great song, even greater voice. Excellent reaction, Harri. Thanks.
Among my Created Playlists are ones for The Big Build, and Tearjerkers. I just realised they are the poorer without this one. Added.
I'm old enough to remember hearing his hits on the radio at the time.
It was one of the best nights of my life seeing the Big O. every song he sang was as good or better than the record, the best voice in every way !!
Roy was the O.G. of Rock and roll. Great at ballads and playing sweet as well.
I love your reactions. I am sure you are a beautiful gentle soul.
I'm always happy to hear Roy sing. I saw him in concert twice and he was just great. Loved your reaction.
Beautiful then beautiful now. R.I.P.
My Dad is a huge Big O fan, and he played Roy's music every Saturday morning. Roy's music was what made me love strings and orchestration in rock and pop. I'm grown up, and I listen to Roy on Saturday mornings now, myself.
You and I get the same feeling from this song. That voice is magical
Orbison is ONE of a Kind!!! Add to your list Orbisons - Walk On. Eerily similar to running scared.
Cant believe he recorded this live! Outrageous!
Running Scared is my favourite RO song! That voice and those lyrics!
What a great ending he had !
Elvis and Roy came up at the same time and Elvis called Roy "The best singer on the planet". They influenced each other.
Such a beautiful voice, very unique, it sounds so good. I have always loved his music and always will. Thank you Harri!
This is my favourite song from Roy.
Great choice of song!
Love your reaction Harri 🥰. My older brothers were fortunate to see Roy O live around the time of this incredible song was recorded, this concert took place in a small community Arena in Edmonton, Alberta 🇨🇦& I think Diana Ross & The Supremes were there as well ! I am still amazed that these incredible singers actually came to our small northern town in Canada back in 1961 , 💎💜💎💓
When I need a dose of inspiration.. I just crank up Roy, better than any medicine.
SIMPLY THE BEST. ROY YOU WHERE THE MAN. AMAZING TALENT JUST BRILLIANT AND THAT VOICE. GONE TO SOON.
another terrific reaction Harri, and don't worry about your "over enthusiasm" every now and then I'll catch a reviewer, probably a very nice guy (they're almost always men) who sit there completely stone faced then at the end will say something like "well that was a good one" which to me is no reaction at all. I may have mentioned I DJ some weekends and I'll put this on every now and then and you would be amazed at how many early 20's people will come up to me and tell me how much they would love to hear some songs like this today. Good music is timeless, and Roy was one of the best, have a good day
One of my favorite vocal performances by Roy in Blue Bayou. Absolutely amazing!!
Pure buildup, with no chorus. Unusual song structure and Roy's vocal talents and his passion varied it out flawlessly!
Roy is one of the best!❤
