I've made this and I can attest that it works great! I keep my homemade chalk paint in the sample bottle the paint came in. The first time I made this I had an 8 oz. bottle paint sample of Valspar. So I just added the water-calcium carbonate mixture directly into the sample bottle & mixed well. I still have some left in that original bottle and it's still fresh a few years later.
That is so cool to here! Thanks for leaving your experience with using calcium carbonate.
I used to work at Lowes as a paint specialist and Valspar paint is awesome, I love it and believe me when I say that I have no idea how anyone can have a good reason for charging so much for chalk paints. I love your directions for mixing the calcium carbonate with water first before mixing with your pain, and yes using flat paint is the way to go. Great job. Thanks for the video!
What a nice comment! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on Valspar. It's my favorite go to paint to make chalk paint. I agree the entire chalk paint line of paints is a scam. $40-$50 for a quart of paint???? C'mon!!!!! Their marketing is so fraudulent too, no prep paint? It's laughable to me. They have preyed upon people's naivety. I'm a rebel out here on the interwebs speaking up.
This is the simplest way to make chalk paint I have ever seen. Thank you so much. I just subscribed to your channel right after I listened to how you make the paint.
Thanks for subbing!
LoL no wonder this yields chalk paint. Chalk *IS* essentially Calcium Carbonate. I have no idea why someone would charge so much for Chalk Paint. Thanks for sharing this recipe.
@@ashokmoghe8035 Yea I’m personally aware that calcium carbonate is chalk. Some people do not and some people don’t realize how easily they can make their own chalk paint. I think so many companies charge so much because painting furniture became trendy.
Just started working with chalk paint and I wanted to try a cheaper way of painting my projects. Expensive is right. I was so happy to run into your video on making chalk paint, and I definitely will give this a go. Sounds perfect! Thanks so much for this info and freely given. You are a gem to share this with us and am so appreciative for it. Thanks again. XOXO
You are so welcome!!! I know how expensive it can be to buy all of the supplies to paint a piece of furniture and I know that can discourage many people from dabbling in DIY projects. I am happy to help and I’m glad you found my channel!
Can I use that paint of yours to paint glass jars or glass vases! New here and I have no idea about it.
I personally haven't painted glass jars or glass vases with chalk paint but I do know a lady that painted mason jars with it with great success.
Thank you, this is great! Just had an argument with hubby about spending money on paint!
Glad it was helpful! You tell your hubby to shut it!!! HAHAHA! I'm just joking but this tip will help you with saving money.
Thank you for sharing I'm going to give this a try I live in the boonies so I ordered a lot of stuff from Amazon
Thank you. I just started, but I was using Plaster of Paris and was so frustrated with the lumps and fast drying time. I didn't even know it was toxic. Happy I saw your video, still after 3 years.
You are so welcome! Calcium Carbonate will make sure a difference for you!
RIGHT???!! Me too!! No plaster of paris for me!
Can I mix it with a colour paint
Yes you can. Latex paint works best. Any color.
I just found your videos I am so happy to have found you so much information I have just started painting and flipping furniture and making my own chalk paint all your videos are so informative thank you I will be following you all the time now love you Style and thank you for sharing
Shelagh Stuart What a nice comment to read!!!! Thank you so much!!! I’m so happy you found my channel and I’m glad I’m being helpful. I’m always looking for feedback on what else people would like to learn so please let me know. I’m here to help! 😊
????????
What brand of wax do you use after you paint???????thank you
I've used Annie Sloan, Maison Blanche (no longer available) and now I use Debi's Design DIY wax.
Me encantó el tutorial, pero con qué otro tipo de pintura puedo reemplazar por la que mencionas, ya que son muy costosas para mí vivo en México Gracias
What is calcium carbonate? I’m from England is it like a baking powder?
Calcium carbonate is an inorganic compound commonly known as limestone, stone powder, marble, etc. Its main ingredient is calcite.
What do you do about colors? I'm needing an eggplant color.
You can mix the calcium carbonate in any color.
Ok rewound
When I make chalk paint using plaster of Paris, it turns a little greyish. Does the calcium carbonate powder change the colour of the white paint? Thanks in advance 👍
It does not change the color.
Off topic question…Up top left hand corner in the back is something that resembles a clock but when I very first noticed it, it looks more like my antique kitchen scale. Am I seeing things cause I’ve never seen another like mine? TIA
Yes it is! I have staging items in the background.
So very glad to have the chalk paint recipe, Thank you. Enjoyed your video!💕
You are so welcome! I hope it works well for your projects.
Thank you for sharing this information. You may have answered this question already, but can this recipe be used in a spray gun?
Chalk paint can be used in a spray gun if it’s the right consistency. Sometimes chalk paint can run a tad thicker than regular paint. Depends on the specific sprayer.
I still haven't quite figured out the reason for chalk paint. Why do you want it to be chalky? I don't understand the benefits
Has better adhesion qualities, easy to mix with other colors for blending effects, dries super fast and easier to distress.
Does anyone know if this recipe with calcium carbonate can be used for reverse graphic transfers (paper onto wood)?
I use Mod Podge for that.
Can I use acrylic paint instead? I need mine for wooden art signs.
You can!
Hi will the calcium carbonate work in acrylic paint as well? Thanks for your information!
It will not work with acrylic paint. Acrylic paint is chemical based whereas latex paint is water-based.
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 HI there, so I got the Valspar Signature, same can as you had in the video, and it says on the label '100% acrylic latex' ??
I know this is an old video but can you roll this paint instead of brushing? TIA
You can certainly roll home made chalk paint.
I usually whiz on start cause some prattle on at beginning!
I sometimes chat a bit before my videos. I'm from the midwest, we tend to do that. HAHA! But I also am going into the why's and how come's to what's coming up next in the video.
I'm originally from NH too, born in Franklin! I sure do miss those beautiful fall colors! I now live in Texas where I am very aware of GLOBAL WARMING!!! UGH! I hate the heat! Thank you for sharing this wonderful information with us!!
did you ever find out calcium carb is chalk?
Yeah most people know that.
Thank you, great info. I always have calcium carbonate on hand, many uses.. It's often used in toothpaste as a mild abrasive.
Thanks for watching! Yes CC is good stuff.
I waited for that close up 😂.
What if the piece is in a bathroom. Do you use a different product?
You can use chalk paint on a piece in the bathroom. What's most important is the topcoat you choose over the chalk paint. I personally would apply a water based poly. Multiple coats.
Can this be mixed with acrylic paint
Yes I use it often with Valspar paint from Lowes. Just make sure you get a matte/flat finish.
Where can you get The calcium carbonate
You can order off Amazon:
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XI4RN1E/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=madelinejeana-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B00XI4RN1E&linkId=b9b4d3ee4eb945c5f3d41ee86335c413
Why must you use flat or matte? What happens if the sheen is eggshell or satin?
Flat/matte finishes have less binder in them. Satin and gloss paint have more binder in them. So when you mix the calcium carbonate with glossy/satin paint it can mix horribly. Creating an almost cement like mixture. It’s happened to me before I figured it out. So I advise people to go with a sheen like matte or flat.
what about making colors?
You can use any color.
Can you use with acrylic paint
I’ve only used this recipe with latex paint.
Is this different than Calcium Hydroxide?
I believe it is. I've only tried Calcium Carbonate.
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074
Thank you for your efforts 👌
Can you use this method with any color or is lighter better? I’m VERY NEW to this my “free found on road dresser” just cost me 135$ with 2 quarts of rust oleum paint, a clear coat and a couple cans of chalk spray paint! Not sure why I got the spray paint.
I found color’s not a wide variety also the clear coat turned my project yellow. 😢
This is a great tip- thanks
Oh nooooo! Okay I’ll going to help you save some big bucks. A free roadside dresser shouldn’t be costing you this much in materials. Let’s talk paint. To answer your question yes you can use this calcium carbonate with ANY shade of paint. Use a latex paint and a low sheen. I love Valspar paint from Lowe’s. If you don’t want to make your own chalk paint I’ll recommend two budget friendly brands. Walmart’s chalk paint called Waverly. It’s in the craft section, not the paint section. Also Rustoleum makes a nice chalk paint as well. That can be found at Walmart as well. I would stay away from any type of spray paint. Your project yellowed probably because either 1. You didn’t prep correctly or 2. You used an oil based clear coat.
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 thank you so much for taking the time to reply!
I did purchase the rust oleum from Walmart, 2 quarts plus the chalked matt clear. @ 25 bucks each. Throw in the unneeded spray paint at 12 bucks a can. I got two because well because I was clueless! lol the other $35 was on brushes, tape, sponges, and krud kutter, sandpaper etc. I was seeing myself up for sucess. Now I have leftover’s. lol heading to ace hardware soon for some minwax finish.
Already ordered my calcium carbonate after watching you.
@@user-hk9zg2jy1u You are very welcome! If you need any more help let me know. Happy to assist you on your new journey!
Can you add color to the white calk paint
You can mix calcium carbonate with any color of water based latex paint. Make sure it's matte or flat in the sheen for best results.
I'm going to pick up some calcium carbonate. That is an excellent tip. In the past I have had Home Depot and Lowes add extra white tint to my paint. The code for Home Depot is KXL. I forget what the code for Lowes is. Anyway, it adds extra Titanium Dioxide to your paint. Titanium Dioxide is the pure white pigment. The advantage to having the Home Depot or Lowes add Titanium Dioxide to you paint, is that it already has the perfect ratio of resins and binders already in it. Through trial and error, I found that 4 ounces to one gallon of paint is about the maximum that I am willing to go. Once you get beyond 4 ounces of tint, the paint becomes to runny. Most off the shelf white paints actually have a tint of gray to them to help them hide better (great for primer, not so much for finish coat). Keep up the good work, I appreciate all the time and effort you put into producing these videos. I find them very helpful and informative.
Your comment snuck those the cracks on this video. I'm just NOW seeing it. Holy smokes what an informative comment! So sorry I missed this one. Thank you so much for this helpful tip!
I had no idea that plaster of Paris was toxic.
Yes! Definitely switch to calcium carbonate.
Thank you. I don’t have a lot of money and am making furniture for my new apartment. All my things in storage were stolen. You made a very easy recipe to use and I am excited now.
Glad it was helpful! I hope your project turns out well.
And where would I buy it?

Calcium carbonate is what used to make sure why can’t you just grind up some chalk and add it to your paint?
I guess you could but who wants to grind up chalk? Too messy. The calcium carbonate doesn't cost much.
Great video ,I subscribed cause I want to see your work and learn 💕💕
Sherry Berardino Awesome!!! Thank you for subscribing!!!
Any pottery supply house will carry calcium crab (whiting).
Do you have to use primer before painting if the original colour was dark like brown?
Can this be used for chalk paste for reusable transfer stencils ? Thank you
chalk paint is supposed to be made with natural and non toxic ingredients, but can you you testify that the paint you add into the calcium carbonate is non toxic?.
Hello .can I use any acrylic paint for the calcium carbonate. Even the wall pain
Thank you I have been watching videos all morning long and you are the first person that described calcium carbonate and what it was and what exactly would be a good brand to mix it with.
You are so welcome! It's worked every single time for me.
Thank you queen :-) saved me from an expensive diy!
Awesome! Glad my video helped!
Can you use on glass?
I'm not sure. I've never painted on glass with homemade chalk paint.
How does this recipe do when blending two colors?
can i use this on glass?
I personally haven't applied chalk paint over glass. I have seen others do it.
Hello. I just came upon your video and I am over the moon excited!! I paint and flip furniture and would love to save money on chalk paints! My question is can you use other lines of Valspar such as the Medallion line? It’s a few bucks more but the nearest Lowe’s is about 45 minutes away and the nearest store doesn’t carry the signature. Also I am assuming you get it in Flat?
Cassandra Smith Hi fellow flipper!!! Yes you can use calcium carbonate with other paints. I’ve used it with Benjamin Moore as well as Valspar. So any latex paint. The one key thing you have to remember make sure the finish is flat or matte if you use a satin or glossy it doesn’t work as well.
Madeline Jean Antiques & Restoration, LLC thank you so much not only for responding but for a great video!!
Madeline Jean Antiques & Restoration, LLC. Hello again my fellow furniture flipping friend! I got the Calcium Carbonate in and my question now is if I want to make a larger amount say 1 pint I would just double the ingredients?
Do you use a top coat of some kind? And thanks
Yes either a wax or a water based poly.
thank you so much for the video very very helpful. just wish you did a little bit of a close up.
Melissa Glad you liked the video! Yeah this video was created before I got a real tripod to do close up shots.
Can you make chalk paste using the calcium bicarbonate
Chalk paste? I'm not sure I know what you mean.
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 the kind you do stencils with. It is a thick paste you can make any color.
@@denisesmith8918 oh I’m not sure. I’ve never tried making a paste with it. I’ve used regular wall spackling to make a raised stencil.
Great! Thanks for the recipe. I am now looking forward to doing a couple of projects I’ve put off for a long time because of the cost of the chalk paint.
I have a couple of questions about this if you (or someone viewing) can answer.
Have you ever done a whole pint or quart right in the can? For instance in doing larger projects- or if you often use a particular color.
What do you seal with? The furniture I’m doing is Mid Century Dressers- plain, simple lines- I really don’t want to use wax- if only because the brushes are too expensive for me right now- and also because I’m a one and done person, I know I’ll never go back to do it again when the time comes- if I dust I consider myself a living miracle! Lol
And- what kind of brush do you use for the paint? It didn’t look like one of the big round brushes people always say you “need.”
OH!
Has anyone ever done kitchen cabinets?
I’ve read varying opinions on it.
Sorry for all the questions- if anyone can answer I’d appreciate it.
Thanks again! Just subscribed!
I'll try to get to all your questions. First thank you for subscribing! Welcome!
Yes you can add the calcium carbonate directly into a pint or a quart of paint. Remember to add the water and stir stir stir. Just make sure you stir it completely in. I seal most of my chalk painted piece with a water based poly. I like High Performance Flat by General Finishes. Super easy to apply. Wax has it's place on some pieces, but it's a hassle to buff it. I usually paint with Cling On Brushes. They are on the expensive side but they are worth it to me. No shedding like the round brushes and the paint washes right off. I beat to my own drum with my flipping business and here on RUclips. I don't jump on to trends and I definitely will tell people the truth when it comes to what works and what doesn't. There's some areas yes where you can go cheap with supplies and other areas where I would advise investing in better tools and supplies. Kitchen cabinets I would recommend an enamel paint vs. chalk paint. Enamel paint has the topcoat built in the paint. The most important piece to painting kitchen cabinets and the prepping part. I hope I answered all your questions.
Question. Can this chalk mixture be used on glass for decoupaging? Also l love your videos and the way you explain everything is awesome
Thanks for liking my videos! I don't know if this will work on glass. You need to use an adhesive product of some sort to do decoupaging.
How can i make it more of a chalk paste to use with special stencils for craft projects.
Do you apply wax as a finish? I have used chalk paint before to save old furniture and for crafting but it is pricey to buy premixed. Thanks for sharing.
Joanne Wolff There are two different products I use for a top coat over chalk paint. Wax and water based Polycrylic. Really depends on the use of the piece of furniture. If it’s a higher traffic piece I would advise Polycrylic. It also depends on the overall look I’m aiming for. If I want a more not so shiny look, but a slight sheen I’ll use wax. If I want a more glossy look I use Polycrylic. It should be noted Polycrylic comes in different sheens. I usually use matte or satin. To me Polycrylic is shiner than clear wax.
Hi Bethany! You are a REVELATION to me!!! Love your videos, instagram, Facebook page! I don’t want to come off as a stalker lol!!
So my question: do you use chalk paint on all the furniture you flip? Do you sometimes use the regular latex paint? And for which projects? Thank you!
Amelie Deschenes Hey there!!! I’m so glad you have found me all over the interwebs. 😉 Don’t worry I don’t think you are a stalker. Ha! On most of my furniture projects I use latex paint and make my own chalk paint. So most of my projects that you see that’s what I use.
I'm a new Sub! YAY you're awesome Tfs 😘
Whoo hoo!!!!! Thanks for subbing! I really appreciate it!
I'm a furniture flipper in Toronto, Canada and the price of chalk paint eats at most of my profits. Of course, I use a very well known brand which I will not name here but I have to say, it's my favourite and I love it but it's sooooo expensive .. 1 quarte is $50. I'm going to try this at home and I will let you know how it turns out. Thank you so very much for posting this!! :)
Oh I hear ya with trying to keep your overhead costs as low as possible when trying to flip furniture. The only time I’ll use a fancy paint brand is when I’m usually doing custom work (customer pays for paint). If I’m just flipping a piece myself I make my own homemade chalk paint. Yes you’ll have to let me know how it goes for you.
Hello @Suzie Quzie. How did you project turn out? Did it compare well with the $50 chalk paint?
Hi, love your videos! I’m new at flipping and def gonna try this recipe. For using chalk paint on varnished or stained surfaces, I’m going to do a scuff sand at your recommendation, but would you still then shellac before using the chalk paint?
Yeaaaaa! Glad you found me! To answer your question I use shellac mainly when I’m painting with light colors. I definitely use it with white (always) light grays, light greens, etc. You will definitely need to shellac beforehand with any color besides black and dark navy.
Will this work well on glass bottles?
I have known people who chalk paint mason jars so yes it seems to work.
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 thank you!
Baking soda... have you heard of Unsanded grout? Affordable, professional.. oh and self-leveling!
I've heard of people using unsanded grout to make chalk paint. I haven't heard of baking soda. I really like the calcium carbonate to make the chalk paint. It mixes in, dissolves completely and gives such a nice chalky look.
Hi Bethany, You are an inspiration. I am looking forward to make my own chalk paint too. The water based latex paint that you used is for furniture or for walls. I have inquired all the painting shops here in UAE and they say that they have latex paint only for walls and not furniture. For furniture they have latex which is oil based. Please suggest
Ahhhh thank you so much! That's my hope is to inspire others. Latex paint is latex paint. So if they are telling you it's for just walls is weird. Yes get the latex paint (even if they say it's only for walls), that's what I get just plain old latex paint. BUT please remember to get it in a flat or matte sheen. That's very important. Definitely don't get oil based. I hope that answered your question.
Have you ever tried adding a little PVA glue to your recipe? I’m wondering if that would give it more “ sticking” power, especially on glass?
Never tried adding that. This recipe works well for adhesion.
Would I be able to make an ombre effect with this home made chalk paint?
Yes you should be able to make an ombre effect with making your own chalk paint.
Lovely idea... Can acrylic paint when mixed with calcium carbonate turns into chalk paint?
I personally haven't mixed it but I've seen a couple of people mix craft paint with calcium carbonate with success.
I’ve tried using calcium carbonate a few different times and it always ends up so extremely gritty that the finish is actually sharp when rubbing your hand over it. So I have to sand it down. Am I doing something wrong or does it turn out this was for you as well??
I have not had this issue at all. If anything I love calcium carbonate because when you mix it in the paint the mixture is smooth. It shouldn’t be sharp feeling after it dries. So maybe too much calcium carbonate or not enough water. Make sure you stir it really well scrape it off the bottom of the paint container or the cup that you’re mixing it in.
Thank you for sharing your recipe.
You are so welcome!
What about using this recipe for a spraying application? Usually you must add water for the sprayer… I assume it would be ok?
I believe you can. I know many people that spray their projects with regular chalk paint. I know most have to adjust their sprayer and usually spray on cardboard first.
Sounds and looks good!! will go try irt right now!! thankyou!! God Bless you, your paint and your projects oh, in fact, all your customers as well!! Or do you have a newer upgraded recipe since this was posted three years ago??
Same recipe! I haven't changed anything in that time.
Can I use this recipe on fabric? And what about darker colours? Can they stay same colour with that white powder? Thank you
I have never painted fabric so I can’t advise on that. This recipe works fine with darker colors.
What about crushed egg shells?
I was looking through the comments to see if anyone had asked the same question as I'm curious as well. Great question. It's only been a year since you've asked your question so hopefully somebody will answer eventually 🤣
Thanks for sharing this recipe! Cant wait to try it. my I ask about priming… do you ever use primer before using your chalk paint and if so, when do you use primer?
You’re so welcome I hope the recipe works well for you. Yes sometimes I do use a primer before I apply chalk paint. It all depends on the color of paint I’m using. If I’m painting a piece white I will first apply two coats of white primer that is shellac based. You have to get the primer that is shellac based or it won’t block stains and wood tannins coming to the surface. If I’m painting a piece a mint green I will apply clear shellac (two coat) before I apply my chalk paint. Every time I paint with chalk paint I do first apply a primer of sorts, so it’s either clear shellac or a white primer with a shellac base.
Hi, I just found your channel. Can you use any color latex paint with the same recipe to make different colors? Thanks for any help
Yes you can! Any color.
They will also have talc.
Just come across this website ❤Do you colour the chalk paint or do you make chalk paint from different colour paints?
I make the chalk paint from different colored water based latex paints.
Love this video. Love saving money. If you are using a dark color will it make the paint lighter or change the color in any way? Will black turn gray?
Thanks for watching! No the calcium carbonate will not turn your paint color a lighter color.
Merci
You are most welcome!
Thank You. I can't wait to try your recipe. I have so many ideas.
You are so welcome! I hope it works well for you 😁
So you're basically mixing antacid in your paint Interesting.
Pretty much!
Does this method lighten the colour of the latex paint? So if it's dark blue does it lighten down? Also could u use this as a primer for a decoupage project? Plaster Paris does that it's so annoying.
To answer your questions - Calcium carbonate does not lighten the paint color. This would not be a good product to use as a primer for decoupage.
Thank you SO much for this information ❤️
Julie Clark Awesome! I’m glad you found this information valuable.
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 do you have to use latex paint if you are using much smaller amounts of paint? Would this work with the little 2 oz bottles of paint you can pick up at Walmart? If so, how much powder would use use in that amount?

You can use any colored latex paint with the calcium carbonate to make chalk paint. Just make sure it’s a matte or flat finish.

What do you use to paint faux leather couch? Is it the same chalk paint recipe? Do you sand, add fabric shortened? What kind of wax if any at the end?
I've never painted a couch before so I am unable to advise.
Just watched this video.. I read a comment about it not working with acrylic paint. OH.....I am working on a project and I used plaster of paris and Behr's premium plus flat "acrylic" Paint. Will it peel off? What should I do? I went ahead and ordered the calcium carbonate you suggested for the rest of the project. This is my first time making my own chalk paint...Should I sand down the piece I'm working on? Thankfully I started with the small piece.. Thanks for the video. Very informative.
I'm not entirely sure how to advise you. I've never made chalk paint out of an acrylic base before. Just latex paint. How's your paint holding up thus far?
@@madelinejeanantiquesrestor9074 Well, first...I'm not liking the color! Second it seems to be distressing "too easy" if that makes sense. I started by cleaning with Heirloom traditions furniture prep. I did a rinse with plain water. Then I primed twice with Zinnzer BIN 123 primer. Not sure why it's sanding down that easy. Maybe too chalky to honest. I could have added too much of the dreaded plaster of paris thatI didn't realize was toxic until now!
Where do u buy calcium carbonate
can i use satin???
Thank you so much for the intructions 🩵💛🩵
is that enough paint to cover the entire piece?
Yes it is.
Hey how long is the cure time if I make my own chalk paint using latex paint before using it?
I would say 1 week for light, light use. It usually takes a full 30 days to cure along with the topcoat.

You're welcome!
I make my own chalk paint too! But my recipe is 4 T of CC and 2 T of water. And 1 cup of flat paint and I blend mine all together in a blender I thrifted 😁

Looks great I’m gonna try! One question, can you blend this like those “high end” brands? (I see this video is a couple years old, hoping u will still see this, lol)
Question…what do you mean high end brands? As long as it’s a latex paint you should be fine. Remember to get a matte/flat finish.
Hi! Nice!
01:25m
Thanks for all your videos, just found you. My son works for Sherman Williams and he says why do we even have to put that into regular paint why not just use the latex paint flat or matte? Why do we have to add the calcium carbonate? Why do we have to use chalk paint instead of a water based latex paint?
Good question! The chalkiness gives it versatility, easy for blending, dries faster than latex only, can easily be given a distressed look, chalk paint is ideal for those who want to add character to their painted pieces of furniture. It also pairs nicely with a waxed topcoat.
