Hard to find good Australian content for stuff like this in RUclips. Love your work!
Thanks Case! Glad you found it useful mate 👍😁🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
keep em coming. enjoy them. always had difficulty finding wall studs-even with your tips. thankl you.
Not guilty at this time your honor. A few years agoi redirected a bunch of pencils for Christmas. Tossed the sunnies and been using nice new ones.i will admit I have several sharpened and laying around.
Michael Puffenbarger That sounds way to organised for me Michael :-) I need to take a leaf out of your book. Cheers mate
im glad you understood what i said. looks like google changed some of my words. i really need to re read before posting.
Michael Puffenbarger No dramas Michael
Great one
Jason Tilse Thanks Jason :-)
Guilty as charged! Great video Shane. Thanks
Daniel Alvarez Cheers Daniel and welcome to the club :-)
Guilty as charged!
Great video mate.
Guilty and sentenced!
Marsh Bryan What was the sentence Marsh?? Banished to only using crayons for 6 months without parole :-)
Guilty as charged knackers 👷♂️
Guilty!! My wife's a teacher and hates when I steal her pencils lol. I drilled a hole at the bottom on one and glued a magnet in it. I put a light piece of sheet metal in my top pocket and boom! Pencil stuck to my shirt, mind you I still had to train myself to put it back on my shirt lol
Great video!!
Maresala Jnr Thanks Maresala. Good tip regarding the magnet! Thanks for sharing it. Cheers
Excellent video Shane. Thank you
Thanks Jamie
Thanks for providing the information in your video's. I'm in the process of working out materials for a Workshop build I"ll be undertaking soon, and your information is very helpful. On the subject of short pencils, my kids have a few colouring pencils that they used to throw out, but I've convinced them to save them, so I can make pencil pots by casting those short unusable pencils in resin, then turning a pencil pot on the Lathe for them, just an idea.
Thanks D.D., glad you like the vids and the pencils in resin is a great idea! I've seen a few of those being turned on RUclips and they turn out great. Cheers 👍
All you need to do is to chop a 450mm piece of Timber and use it to mark on the studs. You don't need to measure and mark.
Absolutely fabulous ‼️ Thank you so much‼️
No worries Jay....Glad you liked it and thanks for watching 👍🇦🇺😁
Awesome job again Shane, bloody good info mate. Looking forward to you're next vid knackers, so i spoze i'll cop ya then. Take care champ.
James Blanton Thanks James. Have a good one mate. Cheers
No more "great tip, knackers!!!"
It was annoyingly consistent & i kind of miss it.
Ha ha
Great vids "Uncle Knacker" i always enjoy them "mate"
Also love that you give Americans like me the measurements in inches & feet; along with the Metric.
Keep up the great vids. I'll be a RUclips Certified Contractor in no time! LOL
Jesusmuzik LOL Cheers mate.
How do you attach the new stud walls to the concrete flooring? Next video maybe?
John Sorah Hi John. I attach the bottom plate to the slab using concrete nails that you bang in with your hammer. After that is done l insert dyna bolts through the bottom plate and into the slab next to each brace and to the edge of all windows and doors. Cheers
Not typical here in the US where our plates are placed flat with the bottom plate a single board. I see your plates are placed vertical and doubled . Common sense would tell me that your process would make for a stronger structure. Your plates are built like laminated beams. I like the concept!
Kim Shirley if i understand Shane right, he temporarily nails both the top and bottom plates together, so when he marks the stud distances hes doing both at the same time so they will match perfectly. when time comes to construct, he'll separate them so only a single flat top and bottom plate is left just like you guys do it.
Gotcha ya... I was watching the video before I had my first cup of coffee this morning.
Kim Shirley Hi Kim. Albert was spot on with his comment. Cheers and thanks for watching :-)
Albert Kelly Spot on Albert. Cheers
shaneconlan1 cant go wrong with your great tips Knyaaaaaaaaaaaaackers :)
Guilty 👍
blurrk9 Welcome to the club Blurrk :-)
Guilty. Well done video, Shane. Just FYI, in the US the bottom plate is sometimes referred to as the shoe, and the horizontal (noggen?) is called a cat.
Steve Collins It's a pretty popular club Steve :-) Thanks for the info re the plate and noggin. Cheers mate
Not guilty...but great tip knackers!!!!
NaturaPug Thanks NaturaPug. Cheers
Guilty, but mine are permanent markers with flat tips they still write and mark fine but I have to hold them straight up and down... lol I use pencils when I can, i usually do sheet metal work for an HVAC company so pencils aren't as good on steel. Lol good videos I enjoy your work always simple and quality.
Myles Evans Thanks Miles. It's amazing how such a simple thing such as a pencil or a permanent marker can cause such an inconvenience LOL Glad you like the vids. Cheers :-)
shaneconlan1 Sorry Myles, spell check came back as 'Miles"
Lol no problem happens all the time not a big deal! Cheers!
Col . Next time your at your timber supplier , ask him or her or ? for free pencils . you have spent enough buying timber off them ..
debobba Good call Debobba! I might just do that :-)
GUILTY
Ben West Welcome to the club Ben :-)
Not guilty.....pencils are cheep......your lumber is green down under......good work / tip Shane/Knackers.....
Roy May I know they're cheap Roy but l just keep forgetting to buy some. I'd write a list so l didn't forget but l can't find a pencil :-)
Shane, may have been asked before, but the blue colour of the wood. Has it been treated some way? Over here in the Netherlands, outdoor wood for decks, etc. can be wolmanized and has a greenish colour. So what about the blue?
Robert van der zaan Robert, the blue timber is treated for termite protection. It's compulsory over here. Cheers
Not only am I guilty on the pencil, but I keep putting them down and forgetting where I put them. I have heaps of them dotted around the shed.
rosscoesmiff How frustrating is it ?? Cheers mate
Not Guilty, that's my story and I am sticking to it :)
woodturningjohn Guilty people always plead innocent John :-)
What's with the blue lumber??
So what do you do with "the required centers" once you have found them?
The centres are what distance your main studs need to be apart. They can be closer but not further. The distance relates to the start of one stud to the start of the next stud.....hope that makes sense 👍
I might sound like a knucklehead asking this, but what happens when you get to the end and the stud spacing isn’t exactly 450mm?
For example if you have a wall that is 2600mm long, there is an odd spacing at the end. Do you just leave it or would you recalculate your 450 centre’s to be something else?
Hi Ayla....no such thing as a dumb question 👍.....No need to recalculate.....just leave it as it is.....just as long as it's not larger than 450. Hope that helps 👍😁🇦🇺
Not guilty, but only because I'm trying out a mechanical construction pencil right now. Jury is still out on whether it's any good.
MukYJ Oohhh that's a bit risky MukYJ. It' might be like using a bricklayers pencil. Virtually impossible to mark anything :-) Cheers mate
I'm not guilty because I lose them before they get close to being that small
+Jimmy Obrien Hahahahha
Hey mate..
What happens when you are building a wall frame and placing your studs every 450 mm but when you get close to the end of that wall the last space is less than 450 mm. Would you put on that last stud no matter how short the distance to the corner is?
G'day Mauro, if the space is less than 450mm, you don't need to add in another stud. Good luck 👍
big guilty !!!!
Ron Stark Glad l'm not the only one Ron :-)
Guilty (ish) I saw my new pecils in half so I have two pecils!!!
I'm guilty of carrying my pencils between my lips because it's the only place I don't lose them!!
***** Good idea mate…l probably still lose them though :-) Cheers mate
i'm guilty lol just wondering whats up with the blue lumber? great job from a yank mate
alan pittman Sorry to hear of your affliction Alan. Welcome to the club :-) The blue timber is a termite resistant wood. It's compulsory over here. Cheers mate
Ikea $1 hotdogs and free pencils
Michael Witte Looks like l'd better make the trip to Ikea. Pencils and hotdogs….no we're talking ! Cheers Michael
What if your wall length is not a multiple of 450mm?
Denis Minuz they are max spacings according to code iirc
Albert Kelly Thanks Albert. So you can set the spacings at your own discretion as long as they don't exceed 450mm?
Guilty, i need help haha.
pasquale Avocone I think you can find support groups in the local phone directory :-)
Guilty!
As charged, Your Honour 👍😂
If using 90 x 35 studs the technique for creating external corners doesn't work. But most competent persons should be able to work out what is required to make it work.
Can confirm my wife also doesn’t like the size of my pencil😂
😂😂......same 😂
Not guilty…..yet! ☺️
Won't be long Debbie 😂
@@diyforknuckleheads there needs to be a pencil finder! Lol! Mine is yellow, but so are the autumn leaves!
Not Guilty! Happy to send you 5 new pencils if you dump all your old pencils!
Ben Taylor That sounds like an offer to good to refuse Ben :-)
shaneconlan1 ok where should I send the pencils?
Ben Taylor Thanks for the offer Ben but l should be alright mate :-) Cheers
Would like me to organise a box of DIY For Knuckleheads carpentry pencils for you mate? They would sell like hot cakes - Lol :-)
Marty Daley I reckon they would too mate :-) The trouble is, l'd probably lose them LOL. Cheers mate and thanks for watching.
Guilty
Why are carpenter's pencils that shape? Is it because most carpenters don't have enough fingers to hold a normal pencil? :-)
LOL
Guilty, IKEA pencils.
Des Wheelock My sympathies Des. Join the club mate :-)
Guilty =)
Veronica Welcome to the club Veronica :-)
Guilty, but at least I can allways find one, as no one pinches my pencils on-site..............
+George Gibb George, l think pencils are like stubby holders (beer coolers), you never seem to have your own :-)
Guilty :-)
Join the club Ben 👍😁
Guilty! What is it with pencils, the first 4 inches disappear in what feels like seconds, the remaining 2 inches last forever!
MrNineholes1 MrNineholes…..that has got to be one of the best questions ever!!! I think it needs more investigation. The fact is, is that it is true!! Cheers mate
Not guilty... use the kids chubby type coloured pencils ..... shhhhhh say nowt!
grumpy poo I might have to raid the kids pencil case in the morning :-) Cheers Grumpy poo.
My problem is even finding the pencil at all...
Aaron P How frustrating is it Aaron????
Guilty lol
edward cawley Welcome to the club Edward :-)
The first opening is wrong. You need to mark 450+ half the stud material then mark back off the mark.
Guilty.
markblue777 :-)
I lose my pencils faster then I can sharpen them soooo not guilty
kayakid2000 LOL
