Hey Shane, looking good! The look around at the end, shows how the "fussyness" pays off, The sight line around corners and down walls are , as you said " spot on " . Looks awesome.
OK ... Thanks . The home is looking pretty good . It's amazing how you find the time to do all of that work . Can't wait to see what you have in mind for the inside . Take care .
Looking schmick, Knackers! Keen to see the gyprocking and plastering done. When I first saw the trusses go down, I thought you might be going with raked eaves, but after you trimmed out she looked good anyhow. Bugger trying to slide the azzi up on an angle, always get a gap with raked eaves. Keep it up :D
+Chris Versteegen Thanks mate.Na the raked eaves were going to be to much of a mission. The boxed in look that l chose looks pretty good l reckon. Cheers mate
Looks great! I've been trying to find a more traditional looking cladding product when it comes time to replace the junkie old vinyl siding that covers our 1890's farm house. I'll definitely make a note of this Hardie board you used.
+bigphillip25 Thanks Phil. Mate l'm absolutley knackered! 10 to 12 hours a day, seven days a week does take it out out of you. One consulation though is that l'm losing some weight :-) Cheers mate
found out many moons ago the easiest way to put on lap siding is get a couple jigs made to hook the previous piece nailed on and cut the height of the jig to the spacing you want between each piece of siding. then just hook the siding set the piece on top then tack it put the jig in your pouch and nail of the piece and repeat the next piece. this way you dont have to measure anything or snap lines or draw lines and so on!
+whitewolf8758 G'day mate, l actually had a couple of jigs but l was constantly changing my measurement to either work doors, windows or eaves. Even though that measurement may only have been a mm or two. Cheers
Like others, I'd like to know the dog's balls of a joke told while putting up the weatherboards. :D I can see why you went with weatherboards in this case: the corrugated iron down the side is a very nice design touch ;) Very soon, you can make cups of tea on the back deck and enjoy all your hard work, Uncle Knackers :)
+themaconeau Thanks mate. Righto…the reason we were laughing was because of a cracking joke that Paul (my good mate who was giving me a hand) just told me. It went something like this. A farmer goes to see his doctor because he had a horrendous bad breath problem so he says to the doc “ can you do anything for me…my breath is just terrible!! ?? The doctor takes a whiff of his breath which almost knocks him off his chair! The doc thinks for a bit and then says "l think have a solution…..Gather up some of the cow poo from your paddock….take it home and mix it up with water. Then have a glass of that three times a day".The farmer looks a little bemused and asks the doc if that will cure the problem. The doctor replied back with “ No, it won’t, but it might tone it down a bit LOL LOL.
Looking great! All your hard work and the care you have taken to select appropriate materials and get everything square plumb and level is paying off for sure. What was the third word you used...eaves, soffits, or ??
+Michael Anderson Thanks Michael. Yeah a little attention to detail does pay off in the end. The third word was just another pronunciation of the word soffit. Cheers
+Woodworking Brewer Mate we'd love to be but finding trades at the moment to finish things off like the tiling is like trying to find a needle in a haystack! Bad time of the year really being so close to xmas. Feb id a more realistic timeframe. Cheers
its looking good. Those pourch post are beautiful! Is it common to use just the wrap over the exterior walls there? Here in the states we have to use 7/16 OSB and then wrap it to. Your way seems much faster and easier on the back lol
Looks great. You guys were taking a lot of care in applying the cladding. Why did you need to go back and sink the nails by hand? Was the gun not driving them deep enough? What is the cladding material, wood?
+WoodRodent We go back over and tap the nails just to make sure that they're flush. Some of the studs were the existing old hardwood ones which are like steel! The gun didn't particually like those ones:-) The cladding itself is a Jamies Hardie Cement Board product. It should last forever. Cheers mate
WoW it's looking great, you must be really pleased with it so far. Your front door with the decking will stand out great with the background. Oh by the way what was the joke about that got you both laughing? Take Care, Barry (Bazza) from England.

+TheRestorationCouple Hi guys. The cladding is a James Hardie Cement Weatherboard. You can paint it any colour you like and it should last a lifetime. Thanbks for watching. Cheers :-)
For all the corners. I imagine they are straight forward to install? and install them before the weather boards? and do the weather boards go into them or are they butted up against them? Cheers mate
So do you measure up the sides for each row of cladding then chalk line across and check level? Sorry I couldn't really work that out from the video.. did you also paint all your window trims before hand?
Yes mate...that's right. From time to time also, measure from the top of the board to underside of the eave on both ends just to make sure that you are progressing all the way up evenly....In regards to the painting, l did all that after the job was done. Cheers 👍😁
Hi Shane, love your work. Are youable to advise of the joints where your cladding goes together? also is there a particular tirm that is used at the corners? Cheers Peter T
Gday Peter. The company advises that you leave a small gap where the boards come together to allow for any possible expansion. You then fill that gap with James Hardie flexible filler. The corners do have a trim that you can purchase. They have a number of different profiles to suit your particular needs. Alternatively you can just use a timber profile for the corners. If you need any more advice just shoot me a message. Good luck.
Hi There. Just some questions: 1. You appear not to use the Linea starter strip for the base panel. If so, why did wasn't is necessary? 2. What were your end posts? Linea aluminium or primed timber? 3. Does the Linea have a back burr to hook the new plank onto the previous. It looks as though it doesn't. 4. You used nail, can you use screws with this product?
G'day mate, in order of your questions: 1: I think you'll see that l used the starter strip on all of the first boards. You need it to get that first board to sit out. 2: First of all l used the Scyon Axtent Trim but it left a gap at the back of the trim which would need to be filled with filler so l removed them and replaced them with timber weatherboard stops. I just made sure that l treated and retreated the bottoms and tops with Endseal Sealer to prolong the life of the timber. 3:No the linear does not have a back bur. You have to gauge the spacings yourself. 4: I'm not sure about screws. The correct recommended nails work fine. Good luck :-)
+Adam R G'day Adam. Yeah we do have a cement board product called VillaBoard. Normally l'd use villa board but on large areas like this it's prone to cracking. Gyprock Sensitive Plasterboard is far more forgiving and like l said it's water resistant with an anti fungal treatment. It's perfect for what l wanted. Having said that, l always use villa board in areas like the bathroom where water can be an issue. Cheers
Hi Shane, Great video!! I'm planning to install some aluminium windows and hardie planks but I can.t seem to find any info on what material to use for the head flashing around the top of the windows. My windows will not have eaves so I would think a head flashing is a must. Any suggestions on what to use?
G'day Nigel, the correct procedure in this situation is to paper the existing cladding and then fix battens to the wall which you will attach your new cladding to. The battens create an air space between the paper and the cladding. You just need to be aware of how to finish around your windows and doors once the extra thickness of the batten and cladding has been installed. Good luck 👍😁
+lee blurton Thanks Lee. Righto…the reason we were laughing was because of a cracking joke that Paul (my good mate who was giving me a hand) just told me. It went something like this. Hi Shane. The house is looking great! I am undertaking a similar venture of recladding and am looking at the FC weatherboards. Can you explain why you used the trim you did as I know you can buy aluminium purpose built for internal and external corners from JH? Cheers
+huntercg88 G'day mate. I used that style of trim because it's a little chunkier which is the look that l was after. Having said that l found it a little tricky to install because it was a little heavy and it doesn't have the ability to be manipulated like timber does. It is however extremely durable with a long life. Good luck with your cladding. Cheers
Thanks Shane. It definitely does look a treat! Did you use gal or stainless nails and what sought of duofast gun is that? Did you have any trouble nailing into the hardwood studs? Cheers
+Marty Daley G'day Marty.. Righto…the reason we were laughing was because of a cracking joke that Paul (my good mate who was giving me a hand) just told me. It went something like this. I am very surprised and even concerned that you caulked under each piece of siding. Here in the U.S. anyways, the under sides of the clap boards or any siding for that matter are left open so that any condensation can seep out, and it doesn't matter if the siding is wood, cement board , PVC or hardy board. Also, and I have seen more than once where homeowners who have painted their own homes and caulked under the heels thinking they were doing themselves a favor in reality caused their siding and in some cases even the sheathing to rot very quickly or at least cause early paint failure and also interior mold issues, and I guess, it's mostly due to not allowing the house to breath as much as it should. If you wouldn't mind, or anyone else who may read this comment, to tell me your thoughts. Thanks.
+kperellie ... I was thinking the same thing here . Have never seen caulking go on like that . How's the water or condensation going to pass thru if it's being held back by the caulking . If you lap each piece properly there is no way water from any rain is going to work its way up the siding . Should be interesting to why they are doing this .
+kperellie G'day mate. It's not actually caulking that l'm applying. It's a joint sealant that helps bond the bottom of the top board to the board beneath it. This helps as we are secret nailing the boards which involves nailing the top of the board and not the bottom of the board like you normally would. The house wrap behind the boards handles any condensation issues. Having a gap at the bottom of the boards would do little, if any, in relation to letting the house breathe as the boards lap one another by at least 30mm. That's how it works over here in Australia anyway. Maybe you guys have different regs and standards. Good observation. Cheers
Thanks for your reply. All in all, still enjoying all of your videos including a silly side effect. I may have or maybe not mentioned that I was a remodeling contractor for nearly 40 years and sometimes I miss it, but then I'll watch yours or other's videos and I'll remember all the hard work and then realize I'm glad I don't have to anymore. lol
+Henry Rodgers G'day Henry. It's not actually caulking. It's a sealant that is applied to help bond the bottom of the top board together since we are secret nailing the boards at the top of the board…..if that makes sense. Cheers
+shaneconlan1 just wanted to know if you had any plans/ blueprints etc... for your How toBuild A Workbench. Video as i really want to build one to hold a mitre saw. Thanks

Looks like a real house now! Doing a great job. I know its early but do you have a color scheme in mind?
+Thom Lindgren G'day Thom. We're looking at a possible white / grey theme which is pretty popular over here at the moment. Cheers mate

Too right. Sure is cuppa tea time 👍 The house is looking grate mate. So... what were you laughing about?
+Marty Daley G'day Marty.. Righto…the reason we were laughing was because of a cracking joke that Paul (my good mate who was giving me a hand)
just told me. The doctor replied back with “ No it won’t but it might tone it down a bit LOL LOL.
Looks fabulous, Shane! How's the knee doing these days?
+David Letz Thanks Dave. The knees still playing up a bit but is manageable. Cheers mate
loving your vids! keep it up.
+Wee Make Change Thanks mate. I appreciate the comment. Cheers :-)
Looks great mate. I’m about to weatherboard my shed. Thinking about the James Hardie scyon linea. What did you use and was it easy enough to install?
Sorry just read the comment underneath. Ignore me!
Hahahaha..no worries Jonah..good luck with it 👍
I am very surprised and even concerned that you caulked under each piece of siding.
I may have or maybe not mentioned that I was a remodeling contractor for nearly 40 years and sometimes I miss it, but then I'll watch yours or other's videos and I'll remember all the hard work and then realize I'm glad I don't have to anymore. lol
Any particular reason why you are caulking those boards like that . Have never seen that before until now .
+Henry Rodgers G'day Henry. It's not actually caulking. It's a sealant that is applied to help bond the bottom of the top board together since we are secret nailing the boards at the top of the board…..if that makes sense. Cheers
+shaneconlan1 ... Ok thanks mate as what my nephew would say being from Australia . One can learn a lot watching your videos .
