  • A uniquely different look at one of the sports most iconic performances. The brilliance of Donald Jackson on this day would be unrivalled for years. It was twelve years before another man could land a triple lutz and his record number of seven perfect 6.0's in a single World Championships was only equalled in 1989 by the equally brilliant and ground breaking Midori Ito. It's fascinating to see this performance from the view of the judges who awarded him those marks.
Cuts off rather abruptly right at the end - sorry about that :(

I love seeing this historic program from the opposite side of the rink! This was from the era when Men's Free Skate was 5 minutes long - think about that!
How refreshing from today's skating in that not once did he do a jump with his arms over his head! And his stroking, footwork, etc actually went WITH the music! I miss skating like this so much...

He would be as successful in today’s skating world as he was in the 60’s. Talent is talent.

Favourite moment in this program: the delayed 2S at 2'37"!!! A lost art? Also the Axel out of the spin a bit later on!

Thanks so much for posting this clip, providing an entirely different perspective on his historic performance! I know skating isn't just about difficult jumps, and I LOVE those little creative moments he has in this performance. But, still, I cannot get over the fact that 3Lz didn't become a standard jump for men for another 20+ years after this (I consider 1983 to be that year, in that one could no longer vie for a medal w/o 3Lz in his repertoire).

Delayed jumps are " frowned " upon nowadays, but I can't think why as they show such control and understanding. And did I see him jump in both directions ??

About 8 years ago, Donald Jackson was coaching a small group of skaters on the same session that I was coaching. While I was speaking to my student, she looked over my shoulder with wide eyes and exclaimed, "That coach just did axels in both directions!" I then went on to explain to her who "that coach" was. 😀 He is a gracious man and a wonderful ambassador for figure skating.
