Dear friends and followers, in this video I´ll explain how to fill out your pilot´s logbook.
The pilot´s logbook is a key element in your career on becoming an airline pilot. If you want to apply for any flight job, the employer will ask you how many hours have you flown, to assess how much flying experience you´ve had in the past. Nowadays, there are of course all sorts of Apps to record you flight hours, but I highly recommend that you stick to old fashion way and write down your hours in a proper pilots log book.
So enjoy the video, and I´ll go through each column step by step!
All the best and have fun collection you precious first flight hours!

It will be a amazing book one day :) When your 60 and reading it back, all the places you have been, all the hours you made.. your all life in one book :)
lmao 1 logbook won't be enough to cover that :D Im 18 years old currently, started flying Sailplanes in 2014 and already have my first logbook filled :D
@ StreamCareers
When your logbook is full, you just add the first to last date to the front of the book and get another. I would tend to keep a digital and paper copy of each. That way the digital version can do the math and I just have to copy the information to the paper one. Voila no errors
2:06 that cheeky smile though...
Captain Joe is the best. He has taught me more in the short time I’ve spent on his channel, than any in-person instructor ever could. Can’t thank him enough! Keep up the amazing work, thank you Captain Joe!!
i am 19 in June and i live in Brisbane Australia and i have dreamed of becoming a pilot ever since i was little and i can't wait to start paying for flight lessons, i feel like all the knowledge i get from this channel will help me and it is only motivating me to follow my dream, thank you so much for the awesome existence of this channel Joe.
I hope you are already working as an airline pilot by now.
hey! did you make it
@@weebyy3879 haha sorry to disappoint I completely forgot about this comment. Nah I ended up changing passions, I would still like a private pilots licence one day, but to fly commercially seems dull for me now, I'd hate to sit in a cockpit for hours plus I hate being away from home. now I'm 24 and I am a Machinist, which is my dream and I love it. So I guess I achieved my dream just a different one. Thanks for the comment, feels a bit like time travel. What are you guys doing now?
You know you travel a lot when your passport looks like that
OliP007 "passport"
Or have been abgeschoben to Ukraine again after trying 100 times to get german passport.😂 Jk
Or it could just be a really old passport, I mean it still have that European Union label on top of that British passport.
I remember landing in Samos as passenger and after few days taking a look at the approach from a nearby cliff.
Samos has an... interesting approach path.
If I remember correctly after takeoff you must do a turn to avoid "invading" turkish airpsace.
Great videos Captain Joe as always.. Love watching your videos. Also love the aircraft placement on the wall to your left...
I love the idea of collecting the stamps and miscellaneous things! I can't wait to start my own logbook one day soon! :)
After my first lesson, my CFI told me to go buy the Jeppesen log book. One of my proudest possessions.
Thank you so much Joe for all your videos...I am starting flight school next week... And I must admit your videos have helped alot in gaining information.
Hi Joe,
Will you ever make a video of one of your flights? I will defenitly enjoy it!
Thank you so much Captain Joe! I am starting flying lessons this Saturday and this really helped!!
how did this turn out 5 years later?
Pilots and truck drivers(of whom I am one)have a lot of similar paperwork. We in the US changed over to E-Logs at the end of 2017, but my company has us filling out a paper log in addition to the electronic one. The main reason is that our E-Logs can be glitchy at times, and a back-up is nice to have when the DOT-man wants to see our papers.
Congratulations for your marrow donation Captain !
Captain Joe, love your stuff.
My employer can either look at my Zululog, a printout of my Zululog, or someone else's resumé.
The paper logbook world ended over ten years ago.
Best to you, Captain Joe!
E
Personally, I would suggest that you have both a paper and digital logbook just in case something happens to one of them you have a backup. It would take just a little bit more time but I highly recommend!
Thank you very much for this great information :)👍✈.
There might be some confusion if the PIC's last name is "Self" though.
One of my students name was Self.
@@flybobbie1449 My name is self. My self
Great information! For your upcoming vidoes could you please talk about,"What are the best preferable flight school?" Including their costs and other details. Thank you :)
Awesoem so informative thanks joe
Could u explain about the ATPL training program, like how it works, the process etc. in the net video. That would be nice.
i really love your videos keep going like that
thank you for give more helpful info
Could you explain in one video how does the trim tab works on the a320. Thanks!!
Love your videos Joe :]
congrats hitting 1 million subscribers!
thanks so much for the video this was hugely helpful!
Great to hear, thanks!
Captain you are a good Teacher 👍🏻
Ahhhh I always thought I caught an English/UK overprint to your accent, I take it by the UK passport you've spent some time there? Excellent videos, keep up the great work! :)
MrDemonicDan he's english. His mom is english, and his father is german
4:15 You fill ‘SE’, or ‘ME’ in column 5 only if it’s a Single Pilot time. A320 is not a single pilot aircraft and therefore it’s not necessary to tick this box.
Hello Vasil ! Can I ask something about filling logbook ? If a b737 first officer fly the leg as Pilot monitoring should he write captain surname in a NAME OF PIC column or writing that in remarks column is enough ?
@@sunpalms5219 Hi, if a First Officer flies any leg on a Multi Pilot Aircraft, he/she must enter the name of the commander or instructor in the ‘PIC’ column. The only difference about being a Pilot Monitoring is that you don’t fill the number of takeoffs and landings, and this is regardless of your rank. It’s a good practice to add a remark whether you were PF or PM on the leg. I hope, I was able to answer your question.
@@dimitrovvassil thank you so much for your great and clear answer Captain !
@@dimitrovvassil Hi vasil. Can i ask something? I fly B777. How do i write my flight time if i fly with enlarge pilot, 3 or 4 pilots, and flew more than 9 hours flight, which means i had some hours for rest in cabin or bunker? Should i write the whole time of the flight? Thx
Thanks for the video. Nice explanation.
Thanks :)
I just love your pen. I have some Mont Blanc pens too. They are very nice.
happy new year captain joe.....a delayed flight like greetings to you :-)
4 dislikers must be helicopter pilots.
Himanshu Nimbalkar now 21 lol
Himanshu Nimbalkar now 29
We need jet plane ✈️ pilots too.
A lot of airline pilots have their own drones
makes more sense.
They (can) use identical logbooks. I bet they're Airbus pilots who don't like Boeing. (since Jeppesen is a Boing company) ;)
Hey captain Joe! So informative! Thank you! How many hours did you have to log before you became a Captain?
Hi Joe! Please make the video about anti-ice anti-icing and de-ice de-icing :)
that was an awesome explaned video :)
Nice video as usually. Could you talk in a next video about air pockets ("trou d'air" in french meaning literally "hole in the air")? It should be interesting since all passengers have experienced this one time during a trip but we never know how it is produced.
Hi Joe
Your videos are awesome.. Can you make a video on some conversation between pilot and atc
Thank you captain Joe for explaining how to fill out a Jeppesen logbook
Just filled up the first page of my logbook =D
Great vid Captain.
Can you make a videpo on How Pilot handle NOTOC document?
This will be quite useful when I start flying
love your channel
Flight simulator is great training for procédures, less for holding the plane in the air. Great video !
Hello capt Joe, thank you for the video.. it’s really of big help. So I have the same logbook and I am a bit confused logging my simulator hours, I’m currently training on the ATR 72-500 so we have been doing 4 hrs where by 2 hrs of Pilot flying and 2 hrs pilot monitoring and in this case we swap seats. So how do I log the hours?
Hey joe could u put some videos together in a playlist for ppl who are becoming a pilot so a guideline to become a pilot explaining in detail about the aircraft checklist pushback taxi ing take off etc
Very good! That helped me a lot even though I'm only 14 years old. I always thought that the logbook always stays on the plane and is filled by every pilot who is flying the plane :).
Hi Jonas, The only documents that stays in the plane is the Flight Log.
5:53 That should have been "subtract." I do give you marks for consistency though.
Logbooks like these will run out of space faster if you fly short sectors. I used to fly 4-6 sectors a day and my logbook is full in just 2 years of flying. So I made one with more space for the route column where I can log all the flights for the whole day. Whether it is 4-6 sectors, i write them down for the whole single row only. Now I only used 10% of the logbook for 2 years of flying.
Hello Joe, would it possible you to make a video about any of the following topics?
-how do you use kias, ktas an GS on your flights?
- what is your relation with maintenance tasks of the aircraft?
Thank you in advance. Regards. Alberto.
Thank you very much, but you forgot to hide your name around 2:30
Gregor Przybilla
Nice catch
Gregor Przybilla I mean, it wouldnt be that hard to figure it out anyways. He is a public commercial pilot so if u find a flight number of his you can find his name
A celebrity like Captain Joe doesn't need to hide his last name ;)
I wouldn't want to be a passenger where the pilot withholds his name. Maybe he's currently under investigation and didn't want to show it. The fact that he did reveal it even after trying to mask it shows lack of attention to detail. Not a great trait for a commercial pilot.
Or the guy just wants some personal privacy
Hello Captain Joe,
I have two questions for you.
1) When would you recommend moving to a commercial logbook?
(I am a PPL holder, currently hours building) - should I transfer all my entries to a professional log book? Or Wait until I start or complete my CPL/ME-IR?
2) Where did you manage to find the little pockets that you use for holding your licence and medical? And what were they called?
Sorry that was three questions in the end! Keep up the awesome videos.
Thanks, Bryn
I’m about to start my PPL practice in a month (need to finish theory) and I’ve decided to start from Professional pilot logbook by Jeppesen because of my wish to move to CPL. I don’t want to transfer all my records. I’m so lazy 😁
Great video Joe! It helped me clarify many concerns. Got one question, how do you correct mistakes? Cheers!
Hi Bastosz, Mistakes must be corrected right away as it will create a chain reactions if number of pages or flight hours has been filled. If you are having problem with calculations of flight time or block time let me know, I can check the error and correct. Rgds...
I may get one of these for my FSX/P3D flights
Yes you should! Greetings Joe
Just to reiterate what you've said about digital logging, I bought an
app some time ago and now can't use it anymore unless I purchase a
subscription, which is too expensive. Luckily I've backed up all my
flights but it's a whole lot of work to copy it into Excel by hand...
Where should I fill in all my crashes in fsx?
a paper u threw away...lol
@@flywithcaptainjoe I finally did it :D
thank you a lot for what you'r doing
very cool thank you!!!
Hey, thank you very much for this great video! I'm a trainer for pilot private license, where should I write my flights time in this log book? Thanks
I didn't even know about the existence of computer/mobile flight log applications until you mentioned them. I just found mccPILOTLOG after a quick search and I am *totally* bookmarking their site to download later on when I can go to flight school again. :D
I think what I'd do is keep both a paper log book and a digital log book. The paper log book would be something that I could easily fill out on the spot wherever I may be, and then I could copy that information into the digital log book, and use both to double-check the accuracy of my own records.
And if the digital log book and all of its backups are ever lost, well... There's the paper backup that's been actively double-checked against the computer's more accurate records. Can just as easily re-enter all of that information. It'd take time and would be a pain in the butt, but it's better than solely relying upon one or the other, no?
Joe this was very helpful for a student pilot like myself, as I my mind went wondering during the video I was wondering, since you fly Air Berlin and that's a foreign country for me as I live in America. Aren't you supposed to be speaking another language and how does the language system work in foreign countries for ATC and Pilots?
can you do a video on how to set the autopilot/how the autopilot works?
Thank you, Captain.
Regarding the "pilot function time":
How do you keep track on this during the flight? Do you have a logging function in the FMC or similar, or do you need remember it yourself?
You have fantastic handwriting! Were I able to be a proper commercial pilot I have handwriting that's readable but hardly as good. I'm jealous!
Just a quick question, what if the airfield doesn't have a 4 letter code? For example: My gliding clubs airfield doesnt have a four letter code, so what would i put in? (Note: I just fly gliders at the moment so I just enter "Parham" for my airfield, but is that the same for the tug pilots filling out their logs.)
Wieder eine wichtige Sache gelernt👍🏼
Wusste nicht das du Brite bist 😁
I have an EasyJet Selection with CTC Wings next Tuesday!
Amazing
Hi Joe! Could you explain why a plane in cold conditions needs to be de-iced even though a plane has a anti-ice system built-in? Look forward to it! :)
Is that upside down V supposed to be a 1?
Jason Taylor You're right--that's the European style.
Joe I have a question that has nothing to do with the topic :) :D, what exact pen do you use here? Its a beautiful pen! Thank you ! And your videos are very great !
I know he was censoring his name for some reason. However, it already appeared on an Air Berlin facebook live Q&A about 3 months ago.
Hey Joe, I want a Logbook for my birthday. Where could I find one?
Just got my first logbook at 13✈️😁
Hello, CaptainJoe , great video and content as always! I wanted to ask what is your personal method of correcting a mistake you have entered in your logbook? Thank you!
Hi Tseno, Mistakes must be corrected right away as it will create a chain reactions if number of pages or flight hours has been filled. If you are having problem with calculations of flight time or block time let me know, I can check the error and correct. Rgds...
It would be great, if Jeppesen brings out a anoto based logbook that can be used by livescribe smartpens.
You should definetly check livescribe out. It's awesome!
by the way, i had a anoto server plugin in 2006. With that it was possible to design your own forms for your purpose. I think it was also available as a Exchange-Module where you can send the data from your smartpen directly via email that could parsed by anoto-server to sign or make a pdf-aX or something.
Ahh, so you fly for Air Berlin, nice :)
Nope
useful information again
Captain Joe is it necessary to re-write my Jeppesen logbook if it's according to JAR? I've heard that some airlines pay attantion to such details.
Amazing as always ;) My logbook is filled on 2 pages but I am only 18 :)
Greetings Captain Joe
I have a question.
Does one pay overflight fees if they are flying with private aircraft (ex. Cessna) between two countries in Europe (EU to EU, Non-EU to EU and Non-EU to Non-EU) and if yes how is this calculated.
Thank you and continue with the great job.
@captain joe, This has nothing to do with this video but i recently saw a video of an Airbus Airbus A400M Military Aircraft and i notice it had 3 exhaust outlets on top of the aircraft. I want to know what is the purpose of these 3 exhaust as the 4 turbo props have their own.
i have heard the term P2 or P2X hours. do u have any idea? or how do u log hours when you were a relief pilot n only operate during the cruise portion in a maybe 3-4 pilots flight operation?
This video inspired me to make my own logbook
Hi Captain Joe, what plane simulator do you use for all of those videos?
Captain Joe, can you tell us something about Dutch Roll and Yaw Damper?
Hello my Captain you are doing perfect so carry on boy when you're going to get Ford streib
As a software engineer I can tell you that having a digital copy of your logbook is much safer, you can lose your physical logbook somewhere, but you can never kill a cloud service with a good architecture, that stores your data on many data centers around the world. Plus you can print out the digital copy from time to time and turn it into a physical copy.
Best to keep up with both I believe.
Paper can be lost or damaged too, always have redundancy. For something this important three copies in different locations and manually synchronize each of them once per week. For digital an automatic backup should not be set to touch all copies, if A is erased or corrupted you do not want it automatically over writing B and C with bad data and if the sync from A to B is corrupted you want C untouched. At least one of them should be held offline and fully copied to new media once per year to avoid bit rot issues.
In short for paper or digital verify B is synced and safely stored before moving to C, and keep B and C separate at all times and not in the same building because of fire, flood, robbery....
Könntest du mal bitte in einem Video deine genaue Laufbahn (Ausbildung und Beruf ) zusammenfassen
Question thats is killing me, in brazil our models of logbooks are organizaed with page number and lines organized in line one line two and so on. At the end, companies and flight school write, “page X and X lines 1 to 6” for example, and sign, and stamp, righ next to it. How do you get stamps and signatures from operators, airplane owners and flight schools?
Joe my friend I saw you have a uk passport what part of the uk are u from??? Do a video on it!!!
I'm form Mexico ourlogbooks are more simple, it don't specify SIC and those thinks if I want to fly in Asia, I need a logbook like the one you have, thanks
What if you do a 3 leg cross country, how do you split the entries for the original departure, the two arrival, and again the origin airport?
As far as I know, a pilots logbook is a very firm legal document. I have a friend who was accused of a crime and his pilots logbook exonerated him. It showed him actually in the air with another pilot at the time the incident occurred. It turned out the actual perp had the same name but was spelled differently, but the cops didn't know that and picked him up. Now, he could have explained it in other ways, but the logbook was instant off the hook.
Hey Joe, I just finished my flight school and are now applying for jobs, I was wondering if you include synthetic training device hours in Total time? btw. love you videos from Denmark :)
You do. Shouldn't you know that from air law? :)
And 2 more things: 1) The landings field should mention only the landings you did as PF, not all the landings.
2) Flight time night does not exclude IFR so you could fill both fields.
Hi Capt Joe, As I begin my private pilot training. Is it necessary for me to keep track of my hours Vs commercial training? I know for sure I'm not going to get a commercial license. What are your thoughts on this? Your loyal follower. Jess
Hi
Any recommendations where to log pilot in command under supervision hours in similar log book
joe what do you talk with the tower of airports for take off and landing?
