(This is a very, VERY long post but the goal of it is to bring some perspective and help to anyone, even if it is one person)
This movie and soundtrack always made me feel some type of way. I've had a love for video games ever since I was a kid and always thought about making games. I didn't know much 5 years ago either. Few years before that, I was graduating high school but nearly failed senior year.
Tried community college because I didn't have the GPA to get into a university. The major was Computer Science (2 year degree). I knew it was unrealistic at the time because I didn't believe in myself and I was also terrible at math and didn't even know much about programming either. I remember crying in my car while in the college parking lot holding a piece of paper with an 'F' on it. I'm not sure exactly which class but I definitely failed it. I vividly remember this memory because I had a nosebleed and bled all over the paper. To add to the fuel to the flames of me flunking out, many of my friends were already finishing their 4 year degrees when I barely had a full year of school under my belt.
A few months later I got a job as a part-time IT intern (making decent money, but by no means was it an income I could live off of. Learned some skills but was let go a couple years after that. Got my first full-time job as a help desk agent some months later. Less money but more hours. Worked there for a year or so and absolutely hated it.
One day I was on break sitting at my desk and saw a Reddit post from some dude that wanted to share all of his knowledge of becoming a successful indie developer. The post inspired me in such a way that I never felt. He was just a normal dude. I had spent some effort before a year or so ago trying to learn to program games but always started and gave up. However, this time was different. It almost flipped a switch and that same weekend I spent a ton of time into learning how to develop games. The entire year I dedicated almost all of my free time learning and programming a game. I would get up three hours before my actual job and start programming. When I got home from work I would program until it was time to go to bed. I released a small mobile game and was earning a few dollars a day. For some reason, the fact that I was earning so little a day was actually reaffirming my belief that 'anyone can do it' was true. You CAN make money doing something that you love.
Fast forward today (there was more to this story but too much to post), I made much more money than I thought I would from the game (not enough to quit my job - which I wasn't expecting in the first place). A half year later, I made another mobile game in half the time compared to my previous one, but it totally flopped. It only made a fraction of what the first one made. Even though it was somewhat depressing, I know what I did wrong and learned from it.
I still don't have a degree but I don't plan on it. The games helped me land multiple programming jobs in web development. I make more than money than I ever thought I would. Even though it is not with programming games, my current job is pretty amazing.
Looking back at it, programming the first game was the hardest year of my life. The money was an extra bonus but the knowledge I gained was absolutely invaluable. Reading that Reddit post and programming the game shaped me into who I am today. It's been 3 or 4 years since I worked on a game but I am in a much better place mentally that I think I am ready to start again. I may not make enough money to ever quit my job, but I am at peace with that.
To summarize, there are several things that I want to tell anyone who is reading this and find themselves in a similar situation:
    1. The best advice for how to begin learning to make games - START. Yes, you will fail. Yes, it will be terrible code. If you don't know how to do something, use google/stack overflow, forums for whatever your programming in. You may restart your whole project and redo almost everything. And sometimes that's okay. But you're learning and it will help prevent you from making similar mistakes.
    2. You don't necessarily need a degree to do what you want to do. A degree requires time, money and a ton of effort but getting a programming job with a degree in your hand is much easier without one. A lack of college education does not mean you are less intelligent than other people. Don't doubt yourself (that should probably be its own point).
    3. Never give up. I had countless setbacks and even scrapped all of my code. There were so many times where I wanted to give up, but I never did. Just because you don't know how to do something, doesn't mean you can't figure out how to do it.
    4. "Maybe You'll Get Some, Maybe You Won't". You may or may not make money from programming games. My first game made a good amount but the second one didn't. And that's okay. It can be disheartening but don't let it destroy you. Learn from it. Do better.
    5. This ties into #4. When it no longer becomes fun, or you stop learning, then it isn't worth any amount of money you're getting. It's okay to not make a living on something you love to do. Pursuing that dream can sometimes cause you to hate it. It can destroy you if you let it. Sometimes making money with something that you LIKE to do can be better for your mental health. If that is the case, do what you love as a hobby. Your hobbies will be fun 99% of the time. And if you make money from a hobby, that's awesome.
    6. This gets said countless times but it is so true: the journey is much more important than the destination. Releasing my first game was such a bittersweet moment. It's very hard to fully explain in words. I was so excited and glad that I finally released my first game - it was the single point that all of my hard work led up to. So why should I have felt sad, too? I frequently go back to the memory I had programming the game. It was so exciting finishing major parts and seeing my results on the screen. I've never built a house by hand but I imagine the process is very similar. A culmination of ones effort brought to a single point. It was a very weird feeling that I did not expect but it had a very positive impact on me.
    7. This one is the most important one: take all of the previous lessons and output them into a single point. Pass your experience and lessons you have learned to someone else. I can't stress that enough. If it were not for that single random Reddit post I saw while at my miserable job, I would have never started developing a game. It can not only change, but SAVE someone's life. That's what it did for me.
    Hope this has helped someone.

      Programming is a goddamn art.
This post really reveals the struggle a lot of developers have when making things.
Coding is the best thing that has happened to me. It is sometimes hard, but, that joy of finishing a project you started just feels incredible, and other people playing it makes you feel emotions I have never felt in any other thing I've done.
I haven't won a single dime in making games, I give them for free.
I just do them because the joy it gives me to make games and apps is incomprehensible.
      It is a struggle.
Yes, your code will probably be faulty and bad at first, but that is part of the process.
And I feel like a lot of people and companies miss the most important part of making a game, they only make it for money and status, but not for the sake of making games. What I feel indie games portray is yourself, its soo personal. And yes, selling my games for money would be a great idea, and I maybe will in the upcoming game im releasing, but I don't make games for people, I make them for myself.
The computer programs I build are literally me, but in a machine.
It's such an incredible thing to experience, your story really is motivational and I hope someone gets inspired to start making games because of your comment.
Everyone should learn to code, it's such an important thing that few people know.
And I've had a lot of breakdowns in the process of making games.
But I don't give up, I sometimes really want to, but I won't.
Don't give up, its the most important thing while making a game.
And a good advice is to actually make the project you want to do, not just think about it.
And if you are very occupied with work or school, just do it, everyday I have school and a lot of work, and that does stress me a lot to the point of just loosing motivation, but I remember why I started making games, and I just get my motivation back instantly. You have to be determined.
And don't think you are too young or too old to start writing code, I started at 12, gave up, and at 13 I started back again, and this time, I didn't give up. Don't think you can't code because you aren't smart, its just logic, I am very bad at maths, and yet, I still make games, of course, with a bit more struggle, but It's just logic.
      Don't ever give up.
      :D

    • @richardbernard9873
      @richardbernard9873 9 лет назад +1

Charles Martineau I think the true genius of the project is the one that implemented Phil's ideas into a game, the Trixel Engine writer, and the custom tilemap designer program, these were not built by Phil Fish, but built out of necessity for turning his ideas to life. It takes a real genius to put great ideas to the test.

Charles Martineau They hate Fish 'cuz the time he took, people don't understand that masterpieces take time, can't wait. If it was after development, people talked about how much of a jerk he was for reslehing Fez. He was basically saying 'Fuck you!' to the people who hated him.

Its been doing okay, been super busy lately unfortunately... But thanks for asking dude I appreciate it. Don't give up, because I think coding shows people how you can't get it down immediately, and you need to practice practice practice for anyone to be good in it. So once we achieve it... We can practically be very bright people of the future!

Seen the movie plenty of times, and listen to the music all the time. It's pretty much one of the biggest reasons I'm still developing. After 10 ish years of programming, I'm finally close to releasing two of my games. Sidescroller adventure and an online trading card game.
I wouldn't be where I am today without this movie.

  • @MattyGHerring

This is what I was most excited for in sixth grade. I had no friends and found media like this as a way of protection.
I'm about to graduate highschool and I am no longer the shut in I once was. I love my friends. I Absolutely love them and I want them in my life forever. I wish I could stay at this moment in time or the rest of my life.
Video games over the years have become more of a crutch to me than a genuine support tool to get me through my depressive states. In ninth grade I was on the verge of suicide because I simply didn't enjoy life and didn't understand why. Every day after school I would confine myself to my room and sit in the dark playing video games for hour. It wasn't healthy. Taking a step back from video games and being more social with family and the few friends I had saved my life.
I still enjoy video games now for sure. It's probably my biggest hobby. But there's a line between enjoyment and addiction. I enjoyed playing Super Mario Odyssey for an hour daily over the summer, but I have not enjoyed sinking 20 hours into Borderlands in the past week, but I just find I have nothing better to do. I try to moderate it by hanging out with friends or just going out anywhere, but often the addiction is the easiest thing to succumb to.
My gaming now mostly consists of playing Rocket League with my brother every weekend, which I am more than fine with (we're only low plat btw not that great). Having that social interaction while playing makes it loads more enjoyable.
Indie Game the Movie brings me back to a time where I wasn't susceptible to the negative emotions that I now associate with playing video games without moderation. This media is no longer a release, but a substance I have to take in moderation.
I didn't really talk about the movie because it doesn't really matter. It's the hardships and tribulations that we face along the way that matter, and each developer in this films deals with these in their own way. Negative emotions are a part of life and it's up to us to control them and alter our routine to turn them positive.
