Judson Manor houses a select group of music students for no charge in exchange for performing recitals and concerts for the older residents. At Judson Manor, age is just a number.

I really love this. I love the older woman because wow isn't she so cool?! But the younger one - wow. She has an open and good heart that doesn't look at age. She probably doesn't see skin color or health conditions or anything else as barriers to friendship either. She is a real gem of a person. No wonder these two are friends. It's lovely.
Old people are all around pretty bad ass. I like hearing their stories. Always gives me a little perspective to life. Like talking to my grandparents about things they've done in their past, and put myself in their shoes. I'm always amazed at the things they've done and seen, and how easily I dismiss old people sometimes, and realize that I could be talking to a war veteran, singer, former actress, former nfl player, etc.

I get scared when I think about retjrement. My apologies to everyone who have retired and filing social security during this time after putting in all those years of work just to lose everything to a problem you weren't to blame for.it's especially difficult for people who are retired.

I started out at Judson at the nursing home as a certified nursing assistant. It is in walking distance of my dorm and only a couple blocks from the nursing school. They employed me and my classmates while we were in nursing school. They do things differently there. They construct themselves around the Eden concept of elder care, where one is beautifully surrounded by this building where six bedrooms clustered like a neighborhood and there are 5 or 6 of these per nursing unit. The whole Judson camp is right up against Case Western Reserve University and have formed a community bond right there that has been going on for decades. I'm not surprised by this senior living / young dormer concept at all. The University Circle neighborhood of Cleveland has been like this for 100 years. It's totally natural.

I owe a lot of thanks to Laura (and to her then husband James) for taking me in to stay for weeks with them at their Rockport, Maine house when I was a freshman scholarship recipient for studies at Berklee College of Music and still did not have a place to stay. A lovely, lovely lady! Thank You!

My employer has used a similar model. We provide residential support for adults with disAbilities. Each home has 2-4 people with 'disAbilities and a Live-in caregiver. There are other caregivers on duty during the day and on weekends. The "Staff Roommate" has their own suite (bedroom and bath) full access to the house, and employer paid health insurance in exchange for "working" overnight 5 nights per week. Any extra time is paid. The hours are great for students, single people, recently divorced, etc...and they will adjust hours if you have another job during the days.
