I'm just starting to salt water fly fish, have been doing freshwater for many years... have a 9/10 weight rod with an Okuma Sierra 10 reel ... this video really helped me "prime" for starting out... I'll be in Old Lyme and Westbrook areas of CT in shallow water, may use my 8 ft dinghy in the estuaries... can't wait... but it's only February... lol

What a magnificent video full of valuable knowledge. Hello, I am Brody from PEI, Canada. Striped Bass have become super popular in our region in the past 5 years. I came across this video because I am looking to fly fish for the first time in my life and I am targeting stripers. I normally troll for striped bass but really going to put an effort in the fly fishing department this year. Our season opens in less than a month, super excited! Your video really helped get me started. Thank you! Cheers!

I can't believe I lived in San Francisco for 8 years and never figured out there was amazing fly fishing opportunities a 15 minute block from where I lived. It bums me out!

You can catch them in Quebec too. In the Gaspé penninsula.

I would really love for you to do a show on striped bass in freshwater systems. I live in Ohio. Ohio river and several of Ohio and Kentucky lakes have them. It's hard to find useful info. Such an underrated fishery

Use a stupid A rig in the lakes and just keep paddling or motoring until you find them and then you’ll know where they will be at that time of the season year after year after year

You guys should try the miramichi river, in New Brunswick in May, hundreds of thousands of striped bass enter the river to spawn. It is a highly underrated fishery.

They're delicious too. In california where they're non native are legal at 18" and they taste like a fish equivalent of chicken. They supposedly can taste a little muddy sometimes but I've never had that problem with them. I have yet to catch one on the flyrod as I usually use live bait for stripers

does the color of fly matter depending on daylight? Cloudy days vs sunny days using a dark or bright fly?

Jeff that is a good rule of thumb but like any fishing, you have to experiment a bit to find what they want/like. . Good luck and have fun!

You said use a long leader and then you said use a 4 ft? Not sure what to use now

He said long leader for floating or intermediate line, 4'-ish leader for sinking or "depth charge" line.

Their is a spot i fish that during the day they eat anything but during the night they don’t bite but you can hear them splashing so much eating flies. I’m learning and gonna hit these 💯 they elude me at night but fly fishing may be the thing

Orvis literally released this video like a year ago. Why don't you guys make new content instead of "premiering" new videos that came out already.

    • @newflyfisher

Hi Jay, we do have new content coming for December but in the short term, we have been releasing some older content for the new subscribers. we find most do not dig into our archives, so we do this periodically. very shortly we are going to release some content/shows from 10+ years ago. so for the delay, but everyone is in the field right now or back and busy editing new content. cheers
