Excellent job with this video. I really appreciate your style. Efficient use of words with your narration. I waste a lot of my life on some videos with people who repeat themselves and yammer on without directly getting to the point of the video.
We own a LCP ll and a Beretta Jetfire in .25acp...after a lot of trial and error the settled carry ammo would be CCI mini-mags, the copper plated 40gr round nosed, the most reliable running ammo we've found for it...the Jetfire is 8+1, and has never failed to fire...it is also single action only, which entails how best to carry it, hammer down or cocked and locked...elsewise the guns are similar in size and weight, the biggest advantage to carrying them...sure the bullets are small, but no one wants a face full of them...
I have the Ruger and I had a Bobcat and in my opinion the Ruger is far and away the better pistol. The bobcat is bulky in the pocket and was incredibly unreliable in my experience. Also, you can paint the front sight on the Ruger whereas the Beretta’s thin blade is difficult to pick up. Combine that with the difficulty in clearing malfunctions, and it’s an easy choice. FYI, they sell a double magazine pack for the Ruger for around $40 and the single I paid $25. So with four magazines it’s great for the range.
I believe it’s safe to modify the mag body to accept a full 8 rounds and still seat into the gun. It worked fine in my case at least. The slots on the sides of the mag body needs to be cut longer at the bottom. Otherwise the thumb tab screw on the follower bottoms out on them which is why the mag won’t seat with 8 rounds. I’m also planning on cutting the follower shorter on one mag to see if I can fit a 9th round in there. I haven’t done that yet though.
On the matter of carrying a .22 for self-defense, if I had a gun that I had put a thousand rounds through and I knew it to be reliable then I would carry it. The fact that my SR22 has had feeding issues gives me pause, but I've seen other people say they haven't had any problems at all with that gun. The low recoil of .22 and ability to easily put a lot of shots on target quickly is a huge advantage over larger calibers.
I'm a big fan of anything I can use with a high degree of confidence and accuracy. If that's a 22 its a 22. ... I thought we had done a video or 2 with a SR22, but if not those are coming. That's one I don't have but I get to shoot from time to time as a crew gun, and have been building up footage of for future videos. Wish I picked one up a few years ago when they were around 349 in my area instead of the 449+ they are now. Last time I shot one I put in my notes for the future video how it was nice to have a factory SA/DA 22 pistol that has a very shootable DA trigger. Seems like in general most 22 pistols/revolvers have brutal DA triggers.
@@Th3BaconNation I just looked at my box and I apparently paid $337 for mine. I love the way it shoots and it's pretty accurate, but like I said, I have had some feeding problems. I'm not sure if I quite have 500 rounds through it yet--I'm close if I don't--so maybe it's still not quite fully broken in.
Mine works great. Think Ruger recommends shooting high velocity ammo and the bobcat standard velocity. It's $40 for 2 Ruger mags they come in a 2 pack. Think Ruger says it needs a 500 round break in period for reliability
I'm close to 2k rounds through my LCP. I'd say it likes a little more ammo than the bobcat, but both can be reliable if they have ammo they like. With CCI MiniMags I go hundreds of rounds between failures now. I'd say I get one less than 0.5% of the time with those out of the LCP. For the Bobcat I've had good results with the CCI standard velocity. Ruger says the LCP is optimized for high velocity ammo. Beretta doesn't use the same words but its something like more efficient with standard velocity but can shoot higher velocity ammo at the cost of more wear and tear. As far as mags go, at my local stores, as well as on Rugers site, normally they are around 35-40 and 55 for the 2 pack. Others have mentioned sites that sell 2 packs for cheaper, though I try and support local. When tossing out prices I use what I see in stores around me. Especially with firearms, its likely people in other parts of the world will see prices quite a bit different than what I do.
I would go w/ the Ruger. Three round advantage AND an extractor. Yes the tip up barrel is good BUT after a second strike does NOT fire the round then a rack and clear would be faster.
I rather liked this video. I'm going to share it on my community tab. I have both also. I like the Beretta more. But there is no denying the LCP's three round advantage. Also, I've never had a failure of a round to fire after a second strike. That doesn't mean there won't be such a failure in the future.
Thanks! I don't often encounter a round that doesn't go bang on a 2nd attempt. Couple weeks ago I had what I'm considering a bad box where at least 3 in 100 that were bad. First time I've had 1 let alone 3 in a while.
@@Th3BaconNation Yep. The unfortunate downside of 22LR is that this can happen to the best of ammunition. Murphy's law will have it happen at the worst possible time!
I own both and they are both fun to shoot and dependable. Ruger is a lower priced compared to Beretta. I prefer CCI mini mags and stingers and velocitors.
The Bobcat has been my go to for a pocket 22 for many years. It seems to be the most reliable out of all the 22 pocket pistols. The biggest advantage the Ruger has is the extractor however overall the Bobcat still seems to be the most reliable.
My bobcat doesn't like all 22 ammo, but with what it does like its a hard one to beat. I don't consider the lack of an extractor a knock on firearms like the bobcat. From what I understand the tip-up barrel design prevents them from being able to use the extractor. I'm not sure what/why that is yet, but the other firearms I have access to with tip-up barrels that are not 22 also don't have extractors like their non-tip-up barrel brothers.
Funny my son has an lcp and I have a bobcat. And we found the opposite. His lcp failed on every ammo we tried. Federal being the only one that wasn't to bad. His gun would not make it through a mag of cci. My bobcat shoots anything. Possibly because it's very broken in. I typically use CCI 22 in all my guns anyway. I have found my bobcat extremely reliable
Doesn't surprise me. Seems to be the nature of 22 pistols. Some are great, others not so much, as far as reliability goes. My LCP 22 seems to like a little wider variety of ammo than my bobcat, but with ammo they like both are surprisingly accurate, especially for pocket guns, IMO. They are also light and I find to be very easy to shoot. Lots of pluses going for them when they have ammo they like.
Tried tons of ammo types in the LCP - the best reliable was the 38 gr Blazer bulk ammo. yes, bulk ammo. Although I also found the CCI AR ammo to also be equally as reliable, just haven't gone through enough to make that final conclusion. Round nose is what you need to use as the shape of a hollow point will cause occasional issues.
Dunno if you saw those tips & tricks videos Ruger released last week, but in one of them they showed that the chamber flag that comes with the LCP II doubles as a magazine disassembly tool.
No experience with the Ruger. Actually tried to buy one I had seen in the store in July of 2021 but, when I went back the next day, it was gone and the LCP-MAX, announced only the day before, was sitting in it place, so that's what went home with me. My Bobcat, purchased used in around 2019, is horribly unreliable. I didn't buy it for carry, though, as I've already owned a Kel-Tec P32 since 2011. My Taurus PT22, however, has actually run a few hundred trouble-free rounds. It was made in 1998, and acquired by me in 2012. Thanks for sharing.
I have a hard time keeping it straight on that one. In the current video series we're working on, in the Bobcat portion, I think I say something different vs what I load in every scene.
Used to have a 21A didn't like it. Traded it for a Taurus PT22 Poly. That little gun shot anything. Trigger sucked double action only. Fat grip too. I like the Ruger much more than both of those.
I like both, but I'd say at the moment I have a higher degree of confidence in the Ruger's reliability. In the last month I've shot it quite a bit, and other than 1 type of ammo so far that didn't cycle the action it has been I'd say one of my more reliable 22 pistols.
I will take the Bobcat over the Ruger any day i had a Ruger lcp II it was JUNK would Jam all the time no matter what kind of Ammo you shot even tried a different Magazine !!! it still would JAM STAY AWAY from the LCP 2 !!!!
Great presentation, my Bobcat is reliable with Mini Mags and I really like the esthetic quality of it. It's a little jewel.
I own a 21a bobcat best choice I made ever !

The bobcat is actually a 7 shot mag, it'll have feed issues if you load 8. Beretta mentions it in the manual
Good catch. I must have had 8 on my mind when I did that video because I always load an 8th round in the tip up barrel.

They do However a good lube and break in can also be done by repeatedly racking the slide or manipulating it back and forth on LUBED rails.
High veocity recommened by manufacture in the bobcat

make a 15 round double stack mag for the Bobcat

Have you tried mother's mag polish on the feed ramp and the firing chamber? An old 17 caliber bore mop in a cordless variable speed drill.
Bobcat 21a magazine hold 7 rounds in 22lr 8 in 25 acp doesn't it ?
