- Several months ago I bought a used, but very nice, Beretta 21A pistol. I love the pistol but it have a reliability problem with a certain brand of ammo. Watch as we take a close look at this little beauty and then we take it out to the range.
I bought one of these back in the '80s. I feed this, and all my .22 pistols Winchester Super X. I recently added a Jetfire and Tomcat to the collection. Why yes, you could say I have a Beretta addiction...

You could do worse - Berettas are a great gun - I have 3 or 4 myself.
I’ve had mine for 30+ years. Still shoots great. Love that little gun.
Having owned a Bobcat 22 for several years, the only problem I have found is that they need to be cleaned on a very consistent basis. 22 ammo (especially the cheaper stuff) has a lot of wax on the cartridges from the factory. The wax tends to build up in the chamber causing the spent casings to stick and fail to eject properly. When you clean the chamber and barrel after firing many rounds you can see the build-up of the wax as you remove it. You can tell it is clean when the cartridges easily fall out of the chamber when you tip the gun back. If you use high quality ammo like CCI or the others you have mentioned, and keep a regular cleaning ritual, the Bobcat is a very dependable weapon that is fun and cheap to shoot.
Interesting…. That has not been my experience. I have an Inox bobcat just like the one in this video, albeit a Tennessee made gun. Got it in October of 2022 actually and so far have put 1k rounds total of cci mini mags through it, and have only cleaned the gun a total of three times since I bought it. Mine doesn’t seem to care at all about being dirty. In fact I was going to do a 500 round test with no cleaning just to see what the gun could handle. Never got around to that because after 200 rounds the lead fouling was so bad the gun lost all accuracy due to the bullets tumbling.
The gun has been very reliable though. At least for a 22lr pocket auto. Every once in a while (200 or so rounds) I’ll get a stovepipe but I blame that and a weak powder charge rather than the gun.
Hey mixup98 LOVE that Beretta!! Many will NOT carry a .22LR for self defense I would however. I,am VERY glad You mentioned Emergency failure drills with this particular Pistol! I grew up in and around Detroit back in the 60,s and 70,s and had a friend who was a Pathologist. He told me He DREADED when they brought in a Corpse marked as having been shot by a .22LR!! He told me that torso shots would often ricochet off the ribs and literally make sausage out of the internal organs in the chest cavity. YOu are DAMNED RIGHT when You say You would NOT want to be in front of that Pistol!
I have a Beretta 950 (Jet fire). It wouldn't be my go to carry but I wouldn't feel bad with it. In this case, way better than a sharp stick.
They do work, some of us know that.

Luv these little pistols I got a blue back in the mid 80's and carried it in my pocket for years. My wife wanted it so I gave it to her and got myself a stainless and still carry it in my pocket as a backup. Great gun and dependable.
I bought one in 1985 for 215 dollars New. It's never failed me. I love it.
I love this little pistol, Bought mine 25 years ago in New York city,,, I believe I paid like $215... it has never jammed on me. and btw... a .22 in hand beats the .44 mag in the safe

I bought mine in April of 1993. Paid $159 for it at Coburns Discount Guns Fontana. I now live in AZ. Moved here that same year. Sadly, Coburns closed in about 2005. All of my children learned pistol safety with the 21A. Small enough for a your child to grip safely and the lack of recoil to allow comfortable shooting without flinching. What a great little pistol.
Literally just came back from the range where I was shooting a Glock 19x, Chiappa Rhino .357, Ruger LCP Max .380, and this gun. This Beretta was the most fun to shoot.
Thank you for identifying the ammunition that this pistol likes and does not like. I'm surprised that it doesn't like the aguila. My Taurus TX22 loves it. But then it has liked every kind of 22 that I've put through it.
I love my Bobcat! Two points I'd like to offer: One is that there is a very slight half-cock position for the hammer, if you want to keep it off the firing pin. You can still put the safety on in this position also. Two -- I've found that when I've had a failure to fire, I pull the trigger again. As long as that round is chambered, give it another try. They will usually fire the second time around.
YEP! and there in lies the BEST thing about a DA auto!
WARNING ⚠️ do not carry in HALF COCK ROUND IN CHAMBER ! If the gun drops on its hammer it can shear off the half cock notch and fire!!
When carrying with a round in the chamber only hammer down.. or cocked and locked..
I have suffered hand injuries in the past and have a double shoulder replacement in my future. Having a reliable, low recoil and concealable pistol in my safe makes sense.
My sympathies on the shoulder issues! Shooting that HURTS is unlikely to be very accurate. Most shooters seem to be obsessed about "one-shot-stop" ammo, so a gun that can simply quickly and accurately fire three is GOOD!............................elsullo
The tip-up barrel is popular amongst people with diminished strength because you don't have to rack the slide. You can also find these in .32 for a little more power.
I had the 21A in .25 and the .32 Tomcat. I think they are great guns especially for anyone who has an injury or otherwise cannot pull back a slide. The tip up barrel is a great asset at times. I heard some have slide issues with cracks but never had that problem. They are highly concealable and carried these as a back up as a police officer way back. They are so light and convenient.
I found my little Bobcat likes the Mini Mags the best. Awesome little pocket pistol.

I love these little tip up mouse guns. They are as cute as pie. I would like to have one just because. Beretta pistols, old and new, are all such a pleasure to shoot.
I used this pistol to train my two boys how to fire a pistol. After instructing them on the basics of shooting with a bolt action 22 rifle. I bought this Beretta because the barrel would tip up so I could have them shoot 1 round at a time to get them used to the recoil. Then after they were comfortable with shooting a pistol I would allow them to fire it with the magazine full of ammo.
Man you have been my favorite RUclips gun channel since way back when I got my beretta cx4 carbine and saw your video. But buddy you have a way of always making me think I need a new gun. The old lady and myself saw one here in Central Florida probably 20 or so years ago in a local shop just like this one and we bought it. It was accurate as all get out. Nearly every time we popped that barrel up and loaded it that way and tried to run a full mag? Jam. Loading it by way of slide racking? It worked no problem. But pulling that slide back? That was a challenge. The price I payed for that 20 or so years ago in stainless like that? $275.00 new. Because of that pop open barrel loading issue, I did sell it. However upon reflection, I wish I hadn't done that. I should have just commandeered it for myself as we had initially gotten it for her. Thank you for the video. Enjoy the gun.

I have the .32 Tomcat, same design as the Bobcat. I never had an issue shooting over 2000 rounds of different ammo through it. Great backup carry gun. Great video too, just subscribed.

I've had this exact pistol for a few years now. I love it. It's my preferred pocket carry pistol. People Scoff at .22 for self defense, but I've never had it jam with mini mags. Awesome little pistol. Thanks for the review

A lot of people think these little beauties are jam-o-matics. I've yet to have a failure on mine. Mind you, I shoot the good stuff through it, not bulk pack. Without the extractor, you don't want to be pulling out a dud round. The guy who sold it was probably experiencing jams. These little gems are worth having in a collection and, IMO, they are among the finest of tiny pistols out there. The Covert model is pretty cool too, but I don't have enough rounds through it to judge it. Nor do I have a suppressor.
ETA: I believe the Aguila Super Extra uses a long case like the CCI Stinger does. Aguila Interceptor will run just fine. It's a 40gr pill with a normal length case. CCI Velocitor also runs fine. You will know you're shooting it right after running a mag of CCI Mini-Mags!
I had one and it jammed no matter the ammo. They have a bad reputation for a reason

As usual for your channel, this is an excellent little review of a firearm of which both my wife and I are very fond. In point of fact, I actually purchased this same version (stainless steel) of the Beretta Bob Cat for my wife several years ago, and it has been an excellent choice for her as a back-up "purse" gun. I will note that, if one runs a lot of ammo (her gun tends to prefer CCI Mini-Mag) through it, the retaining pins will start to walk out after awhile -- a rubber faced punch hammer takes care of this issue nicely -- and one or more of the screws securing the grips will also tend to loosen up over time. So far as this pistol's tiny sights are concerned: after a few hundred rounds, I finally gave up and resorted to applying (with a tooth pick) white nail polish to the rear notch and orange nail polish to the front blade; this isn't perfect, but at least we can both get a sight picture when shooting in reasonably good light. As you observed, in spite of its size and weight, this little pistol is both extremely handy and a blast to shoot.

I've had several of this model. Great pocket pistol. My first was in1951. My current two, I purchased new in 1984 when I was a candidate for county sheriff. 22's jam frequently, 25's are best.

Great little pistol. I recently purchased a new 21A blued Covert threaded barrel model with the walnut grips as a suppressor host. I ran through a 100 pack of CCI mini mags and 50 CCI subsonic without a single hick-up. After hearing so many horror stories about these pistols being jam-o-matics, I was not expecting such reliability. Pleasantly surprised to see the little fixed sights were dead on at 15 yards. Overall, I'm very pleased with the purchase. Shooting this pistol suppressed is a real hoot.
I think many of the problems were solved in the covert model it definitely likes heavier bullets , even subsonics but they must push at least 950 mine loves the 60gr sss by aguilla and even 40gr armscore (@ $2.99 for 50) the one caution that I urge is to keep the chamber clean because nothing will screw up an extractorless pistol as quickly as a dirty sticky chamber . I prefer using clp in mine

I picked one up for 250.00 last year and it is so easy too use and clean. It fits in my pocket in a Sticky holster and I have 2 mags for it.

Back in the day, I used to carry a Beretta jetfire 25, kinda a single action version of this one. 100% reliable and accurate for it's size. Wouldn't mind one of these too. Not sure I can justify carrying this over my LCP, but they are very robust little guns. (I would recommend a pocket holster for it if carrying tho...)

That has the looks of a nice little gat. I've been sorely tempted to buy it's fraternal twin, the Tomcat, chambered in .32ACP. Either would be a handy pocket pistol for fishing along a creekbank (where I have encountered more than one rattlesnake over the years), or for hiking in the hills. I don't know of anyone that markets .32ACP snake loads, nor the shot capsules with which to make them. That's a mark in the plus column for the Bobcat, since .22LR snake loads are pretty easy to come by. Your DIL is a pretty fair shot with the Bobcat, as is your son. Like you, I wouldn't want to stand in front of the business end of it, but then I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of ANY round from ANY firearm, even an Airsoft. I might take a hit from a squirt gun, though. Be well, and stay safe out there.

I bought a used bobcat about a month ago. It as the black/blued model. After cleaning and oiling it runs reliably. I really like mine. Runs best with heavier bullet weight standard velocity. Surprisingly accurate for what it is.

I've had my Beretta Bobcat for almost 3 years I put exactly 343 rounds through it it has never jammed not even one time and in a life-or-death situation I'm just going to say it definitely saved my life my daughter's life my wife life my mother's life against three armed Intruders one of them had an AR-15 all I had was my Beretta 4 ready to go mags and I will say I'm here two of them are imprisoned the other is sorry to say not here anymore I just came down to that but if it's mine or yours a life-or-death situation it's do-or-die anyway everybody has a pagan I'm sure everybody don't feel the same that's not my everyday scary right now but I still tote it from time to time yes I can absolutely put my life on my bobcat
Sorry, no 22 is fit for personal protection. After going to countless matches including Camp Perry there were always misfires on the line. And your talking guns worth thousands of dollars. My 22 went full auto and my friend had his barrel fly off at Camp Perry. My 21A is horrible with any ammo. If your determined to use a 22 or get one for your wife get a revolver. My 40 cal Glock on the other hand has never misfired from round one with any ammo. I still feel my 50 year old S&W model 60 is still one of the best guns you can get for self protection. Old school that never fails.
@@havfunwithit in some ways I can absolutely agree but for the past 3 years my 22 Bobcat has never ever jammed not once I've never had a misfire not to mention I bet I put over 1000 rounds through it I understand what you're saying that's why I can't agree but this gun right here definitely proved me wrong but hands down my personal favorite everyday carry 9 mm it's made by c o l t I Never Had It misfire Jam or anyting but like I was saying the Bobcats definitely left me speechless it's saved myself and my family's life not to mention the Intruder legitimately had a MAC-10 the odds of me winning that Showdown was only because the skills I learned in Fort Bragg military base but I got to be completely honest when I say all I simply need my standard k-bar and my hand to hand combat skills I'm good and if anybody was to ever get the better of me more power to him but when the people attempted to rob me in my family they had a MAC-10 I had a 22 I'm above ground one of them is under the other I could care less you saved my life I won't never say a bad word about the bobcat I can definitely respect your opinion

I had one of these back in the day. It was my snake gun when I'd go fishing. Loaded with CCI Stingers that I hollowed out a little more. I could put 8 shots on a baseball from 15 feet in about 2 seconds. Great gun!

Great video. I like my 21A inox as much as you do. Been shooting one of these since high school mostly as an outdoorsman's gun. Having grown up in rural midwest, I've taken many squirrel and rabbit with one of these. Nowadays, I carry one mostly for quick jaunts out and about. I laughed to myself when you mentioned having it at the gas station and I have mine in my pocket also when I'm pumping gas. The 21A is reliably, accurate and super convenient little pistol. I don't know anyone who's badass enough to take multiple rounds of 22LR and not instantly regret it.
What do you think about keeping the hammer up or down in the pocket? What are the pros and cons, and which do you choose and why?
@@EnglishDreadnought since there is no internal firing pin safety block, the external safety only only blocks the hammer from falling, and the firing pin is a spring loaded inertial design....there is really only one safe way to carry the pistol in the quickest ready to go condition. Hammer all the way down, safety off, round in the chamber. That way if you need to use in a hurry, you only need to draw and pull the trigger which provides a safety margin same as a long double action revolver trigger. As you mentioned, use a good pocket holster which covers the trigger and keeps the pistol upright.

Another Great Video, accuracy always suffers due to hammer bite, I am just happy it was not sun shine, standing on a pebble or a mild breeze, which are my typical excuses when I go to the range.
I've been carrying that very gone with some gold trim and cocobolo grips for 20 some years now I would say that you can trust your life on it since you're never going to shoot it in defense anyway and a gun itself usually mitigates any unforseen need to fire it, it is a baby Beretta it is so cool that's what drew me to it I guess I enjoy the Beretta it's so Magnum PI
I had a 21A in 25ACP many years ago and I loved it. I was rather put out when it was gone. All but the buying the ammo for it. At Current I own a Taurus PT22. Which is the same little gun except its fancy looking with gold accents and rich dark walnut grips. My kid has it for now and i hope she is practicing with it as it is a lot of fun.

I had one of the little Beretta 22s many years ago. It was probably the most accurate .22 I ever shot.
The Bobcat is a good pistol for people who have trouble pulling back a slide. Since you can load it with the tip-up barrel, there's no need to pull the slide back.
They should never have stopped making it in 25 Cal! It was the perfect Mouse Gun.
.25 acp is not cost effective and quite limited as far as ammunition goes.
I got the “tactical” 21a last year with the threaded barrel, matte black with the rosewood grips, man it’s fun! Got a suppressor coming! 👍🏻😁

I think a dab of bright fluoro nail polish on the sights would be a massive improvement. I keep some ‘angry’ Orange stuff in my range box just for that purpose.
Love my 21a covert, I just wish I could get my hands on some crimson trace grips that were discontinued.

I’ve got a couple that I acquired back in the 80s. Shot them both quite a bit. They were pretty reliable, especially with Remington 40 grain Golden Bullet, Vipers and Yellow Jackets. Need to brush out the chamber after 50 rounds to keep them running. Good for introducing kids to handguns cause you can load via the tip up barrel and not worry about a mag. I ended up digging mine out and sending them back to a service center last summer. I still have less in them than a new one. Haven’t really played with them much since other than to learn they don’t like CCI Mini Mag primers or Federal Punch. The sights suck, especially as vision deteriorates. Slide bite is also an inconvenience after years of shooting larger pistols. For what it’s worth, I have a S&W 34 that doesn’t like the Aguila, so it’s the ammo, not the guns. Mine so far seem to perform with Winchester Silvertips.

I absolutely love my bobcat..!! However it only likes certain ammunition.. mine runs 💯 with cci mini mag..!!!
I have found that the Aquilla ammo is very hot but dirty for .22LR. This may be the reason that it jams so frequently.
One of my favorite .22 pistols., never had a problem with it ever.
After going through a bunch of comments I didn't see any that mentioned the fact that this firearm has an additional safety measure not even noted in the video. There is a half-cock safety to prevent the hammer from resting on the firing pin. It should be used at all times that there is a round in the chamber and before a round is loaded in the chamber.
There are many reasons any firearm can jam, improper cleaning, poor lubricant and application of the lubricant, general dirt and debris, weak ammo and the one thing that a lot of people never consider is when you load the clip apply a very very lite lubricant to each round as you load the clip. Not enough to soak and damage the round but to avoid allowing a dry round to enter the chamber, especially if it is a firearm that has no extractor and relies on the blow back of the firearm to push the spent shell and the slide backwards.

14:27 Probably slide bite, not hammer. Those back slide corners are sharp.
Here's a trick to prevent dry fire after mag is empty. I load a cb round in mag first
then rest 22LR usually CCI. While firing, when you hear the softer report of the cb
you know you're empty. No need for that empty dry fire. Probably have to manually
remove cb case from barrel but you'd have barrel open to load next round anyway.

These are really great pistols! I had a nickel plated .25 years ago and could qualify with it when I worked for my previous department including a 25 yard stage. If you have one don’t ever let it go.

I had one many years ago n sold it to my uncle as I was in need of cash but really regret selling it. I also at the time had a Taurus chambered in .22 but the Beretta was just a better gun. There was a comment a guy made on video on Lcp in .22 and his friend was robbed outside a nightclub and shot in abdomen and at 6ft n 220 lbs he dropped to the ground and he lived as a good Samaritan called 911 but was basically out of commission for a couple months with a nasty scar. Yes .22 is better then no caliber n sure wouldn't want to catch one. Take care.

Nice job on the video, you have some very good shooting! Thanks for pointing out additional ammo that I can try with my 21A Bobcat. My favorite ammo so far is the Aguila .22 Interceptor hollow point 40gr. Those have been the most reliable and powerful that I have shot from my bobcat. My second favorite is the CCI mini-mag round nose 40gr.
When I first got my bobcat I had problems with most of the ammo I tried. After shooting 500 rounds combined of the Aguila and the mini mags, with only a few failures. After the last failure I vowed to clean the gun after the next. I have passed 1000 rounds and no failures since the last. Still have not cleaned it. At this point with the Aguila interceptor rounds, I am 100% confident to carry this firearm for personal protection. I love my bobcat!
Sometimes it takes a few hundred rounds to break in a semiauto pistol and I'm glad yours is working very well. I will have to try the Aguila Interceptor hollow point rounds in my Bobcat and see if it likes them.
