I watched both videos on this repair. I really like your style. Very entertaining. Feel proud you have a wife that takes the time to interact in your videos. Subscribed.
i just found him today from part 1 of this video and round about the time i finished it, this one was uploaded! i was so excited! lol he earned my sub as well.
Nic ...he still hasn't found s good generator... These Generac inverter units area all cheaply sourced Chinese parts. I'm very curious to see how much more life he gets out of it. I hope he & his wife last forever though...they're great together. 😁
Your a man after my own heart! I love to find bargains that are purchased cheap or even free and they can be repaired with common sense. I have acquired projects from a 1965 International Harvester crawler tractor, to near- new 10,000 watt generator from the junk man. But that sweet wifey is definitely a keeper.
Love your video. Wasn't thinking a generator would make much for entertainment. You proved me so wrong. Love the fact that your wife is so supportive of your hobby adventures. I look forward to watching more from you two. Stay happy.
Jim Armbrester 79 CR125 ELSINORE last of the twin shocks. 85 CR500, and a 2001 XR650r, The 500 & 650 are street legal you can street legal anything out in Arizona as long as it has lights a mirror and a horn. yea its due to that "meat filler" they use. Older I got less my body can handle such food. I don't even buy common ground beef anymore, because it to has said "meat filler". Which is the outer crust fat on aged meat, processed to be edible and mix into your beef. So i buy ground sirloin or round ground, or ground beef i know doesn't have filler in it(if it says % fat, it has filler). Or simply grind a beef roast myself. Next time you have ground beef in whatever form, see if you get clogged up or get the runs. Then try ground sirloin the next week and see that you dont. If your under 25, you probably digest it just fine, either way. Ground sirloin normally on sale, just look at sale by dates, then go back on that date. People mostly buy the filler beef.
So a $25 set of piston rings made an $800 generator "not worth repairing" for Lowe's because spare parts weren't available from the manufacturer. Wow. An amazing deal for someone determined as you were.
Take into consideration amount of time to make repairs, cost of mechanic time and expertise, then restocking/reselling the refurbished item. At that point, any profit is lost, it was smart of them to cut their losses and, yes, of course, it was a steal of a deal for someone who knew what they were doing, but clearly wasn't worth all the effort to the seller. I see your point though.
I've been a generator technician for 2 years now and I have to say that was one hell of a troubleshoot. I've never messed with portables but you've got a great toy there for 25 bucks. That being said if you ever invest in a home standby generator try and steer clear of generac or at least the air cooled ones, they are cheaply made and mass produced.
I can see how the hints of stuck rings initially eluded you, no harm done. But I wouldn't let the wife's hint of going out to dinner go unresolved. After all, our favorite moving parts require (and deserve) our best maintenance.
Great vid. Basic info, beautifully entertaining banter with the old lady and great DIY tools ... ON A PORCH ... IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE!!! I love it. Keep up the good work.
I have to say this was one of the best videos I've ever watched. I went to college for two years for small engines I never learned this much in such a short time. You could be an instructor.
I randomly can across this video about a month ago, and it reminded me of a friend's dirt bike that wasn't running and he couldn't figure out why. He said something about low compression but he didn't really know much about it. I decided to see if we had the same issue, low and behold when I pulled the piston out the bottom ring was seized and the top ring was non-existent. 10$ and a couple nights later she runs like a cheetah. Great work on the video, and thanks for inspiring me to go out of my comfort zone and accomplish something I never thought I could.
I like the analytical and logical approach you take in solving the problem. It's not just solving a problem but what I call LEARNING HOW TO LEARN that you convey. Thank you.
Just stumbled across your videos and gotta say you and your wife make a great team! The banter between y’all makes this genre of videos much more entertaining.
This guy obviously knows his way around a combustion engine and the terminology for it. His camera person remains faceless, but seems supportive of his quest to conquer. Dude, for $25 you stole it. I hope the next video is in my que. Good job of assessing, so far.
i was watching this again and i have to say the home made puller worked great. i am an auto mechanic and i had to make myself a steering wheel puller once from stuff lying around the shop. that is the mark of a good mechanic too, that you can make a tool when needed :)
A little tip next time you think you have Frozen piston rings, either put a little bit of automatic transmission fluid in there or I've had very very good luck with Marvel Miracle oil. Fill it up let it soak drain it fill it up let it soak and drain it. Nine times out of 10 if it's just stuck rings that will free them up. Save yourself a lot of effort!
Ditto.....We must be related. If the "Holy Trinity" isn't broken (fire, fuel, air) then a little Marvel Mystery Oil, Automatic Transmission fluid, even Brake Fluid will Resurrect most engines.
WOW! I am truthfully amazed with how much I absolutely, are you ready for this... LOVE this gentleman (and his unique yet very natural charismatic character), along with his "one-liner" (sarcastic, yet supportive) trophy of a Wife/Life! What started as a belief that "this is gonna turn in one of those messy car accidents you can turn your vision away from on the freeway" kind of home-made videos, has become a moment I eat my pessimistic thoughts to myself, into envy and idolizing complete strangers and their way-of-life. These two(or three) family member's appear to possess that hidden key to a care-free & most honest happiness most of us will seek (and hopefully find) within our life time. You 2 are great together! Your videos are very educational. And you and your wife are hilarious together! I think you have the perfect combination of good informative teaching and comedy. This generator series was the first time I've ever seen your videos, and I'm subscribed! Thanks so much!!
So, I take it, since there is no 3rd video, the parts are still on their way from China or by the time they got there, all the screws, gaskets and washers were blown off "the porch" and assimilated back into the forest. Either way, I would have forgotten how everything went back together anyway. Truth is you weren't shopping for a generator in the first place. You just needed a plunger for the kitchen sink.
Love that you have your son involved as a third hand. I can tell he understands the chord slack and pulls it perfectly at the point of compression and applies the just the right force to turn it over. PROOF dad taught him conservation of energy. Imagine if you hadn’t had the 3rd hand. PS. Interaction w/ wife is hilarious, both creatively take pokes! Ps. Your choice of words “electrons moving to create the force within her hairdryer”. You two are funny! Excellent video! I have no mechanical abilities but really enjoy watching this unfold. I am excited to get to see this thing running! Thank you for all your effort making a very interesting channel!

You two are a great combo! I feel a reality tv show coming on. Good guess on the rings, bummer thy are broke. And nice to remember to mark the cam gear for reassembly. I would have forgotten that 🙂
Good job my man, and a good wife, congratulations to y'all, When I became disabled life support is required, we live in the mountains with regular power outages. Went to Lowes and purchased a Generac, $1,400, with enough watts for 2.5 homes. Figured it would be safe and reliable since we would only need 1/3 of its rated output. After 8 hours the electric start wouldn't work. This was a necessity as I am getting weaker and my sweet wife is tiny. Luckily the Generac was so loose that it could be recoil started. After 78 hours it would not run, it has always been covered except when running. I was an industrial maintenance man, engineer in automation, hydraulics, electrical, programming, and debugging. I am a stickler for maintenance, I used to write the manuals. I could get no spark. Oil level good, sensor good, switch good. Contacted Generac, their reply, "Sorry but we do not provide assistance for generators purchased from big box stores. No, we will not provide a schematic. Lowes said they did not do service work, I had to take it to Generac. My son loaned me his on site portable generator until we could afford another one. In my opinion they spelled the name wrong, it should be "Generache" And I love my Honda, less than the Generac in price, similar watts. My wife can start it on her own as she did the first start, as can I. We had more power failures this year than the last 10 combined. I thought I loved your husband, but gosh I love your WIFE too. Thank you both for making me 😂 laugh. I pray God will bless both of you....Love from Hatchechubbee, Alabama...Just a day away from IRMAs destruction.
I know this is an older video. But I enjoyed following you along your adventure. I think you did an awesome job and I feel your pain, I have a porch as my garage. I had to improvise like you did to make a slide hammer out of a pipe, a flat handle cut from a jack handle and an ax head to pill my rear axle on a Suzuki grand Vitara. I drilled out the flat bar to aloew for two lug nuts to hold the flat bar to the axle, then I attached a pipe to the center of that flat bar, then slid the axe head over the pipe and made a stop at the far end of the pipe so the axe head would stop before coming off. Axe head was the slide weight, it worked peefect, I lived 1 hour from any store
You, kind sir, have done a tremendous job of building suspense and maintaining my interest since the first video. I must see the outcome!!! Subscribed!!! Please make the third video.
They knew exactly what the problem was, that's why they didn't repair it. A whole engine teardown just to replace piston rings isn't worth their time. He definitely got a steal on their behalf
Hand raised over here. 20 years at a Generac dealer and I said sticky valves due to lack of oil changes. Looks more like stuck rings from overheating. Certainly NOT worth the time from my viewpoint, but so far the video has been entertaining.
When you said "overfilled with oil" it made me think of my departed brother-in-law. He ruined so many cars with automatic transmissions because he would fill the trans oil tube too. We weren't sure that he stole his brother's new lawnmower but the door hinges were unscrewed and the door was used as a ramp. The thief brother had a lawn cutting job for the summer. In the fall the lawnmower was brought back looking as bad as your generator. The oil on the lawnmower was overfilled to the top.
I don't know anything about motors but watched your last 2 videos and have learned so much, I am a tool & Die maker by trade. Love your style of videos.
You are so interesting, you are so brave, so not afraid to delve into stuff, and you are so quick working, I am all respect! yes I watched both videos! I don't recall time that I was so intrigued and happy watching any other video on youtube! You are making videos, exactly what I like to watch, and making it superbly! Intrigued to the last thread!
Your relationship with your wife is awesome! and youre excellent at explaining and walking through a problem with a resolution. Bravo! i aspire to be like this with my significant other in the near future. minus the kids.
Amazed that you are willing to jump into a project like this. Will be even more surprised if you can find the parts you need. Looks like a pretty tight design, hope it works for you.
In case someone else didn't already mention it, one of my favorite engine cleaners is Easy Off oven cleaner. Just throw the part in an empty 5 gallon bucket, spray it good (with rubber gloves if you want to keep your hands) and then hose it off in about 15 minutes. Makes parts as clean as brand new. You piston could have used it.
I watched both videos on this repair. I really like your style. Very entertaining. Feel proud you have a wife that takes the time to interact in your videos. Subscribed.

Anytime you find a good generator... or a good woman... put a ring on it.
Gold
Ion_Wolf gold is a soft metal it would melt on a generator.
Gold melts at 1,948°F. If your generator gets that hot, it also would melt.

I'm more impressed with the flywheel puller than the diagnosis. That was some MacGuyver shit right there
Simple but highly effective. I will remember this basic principle.
Chronic Dreamer The penny is soft so the angle iron doesn't have a chance at damaging the threads on the crank. It really wasn't necessary though.
Chronic Dreamer - So many use the credit card instead of the penny. LOL :-)
Jokes apart that's a nice idea. Thumbs up.
The penny was a brilliant center bolt protector. Copper and zinc is nice and soft :)

Keith R OOPs you said meat filler lol :-)
With little mechanics knowledge, I watched all 3 episodes...
Congratulations...you are good at keeping viewers glued to the videos.

Just a FYI, oven cleaner works great cleaning carbon off pistons
jonnoMoto that is a damn good idea!
jonnoMoto it also reacts with aluminum and can pit it. Wouldn't recommend.
OVen cleaner works great on engine cleaning full stop, just keep it away from rubber :P

Wow that timing just finished watching the first
joe dzn haha me to
joe dzn Same here.
joe dzn same!
You, kind sir, have done a tremendous job of building suspense and maintaining my interest since the first video. I must see the outcome!!! Subscribed!!! Please make the third video.
I wonder how many Generac employees are watching this video and laughing
Gary Crawford ) I am a small engine mechanic and not laughing. I seen many strange things. Stick to the basics and you be fine.
Gary Crawford 😂😂😂😂😂A bunch😂😂😂😂😂
They knew exactly what the problem was, that's why they didn't repair it. A whole engine teardown just to replace piston rings isn't worth their time. He definitely got a steal on their behalf
Hand raised over here. 20 years at a Generac dealer and I said sticky valves due to lack of oil changes. Looks more like stuck rings from overheating. Certainly NOT worth the time from my viewpoint, but so far the video has been entertaining.
rupe53 ) I had a 5hp briggs seized because of over filling. I had to replace the piston, the rings and the rest I reused.
This is by far the Most wholesome channel on RUclips. Love the videos
Really enjoyed that. Were you on M.A.S.H.?
DodgyDave73 he looks like pierce
DodgyDave73 it's people like you that makes me love reading coments
Lol. I think no one from M.A.S.H is alive anymore
Hawkeye? 😁😁😁
I also enjoyed how his wife is involved. I watched both videos and look forward to the next.
Wow cool
When you said "overfilled with oil" it made me think of my departed brother-in-law. He ruined so many cars with automatic transmissions because he would fill the trans oil tube too. We weren't sure that he stole his brother's new lawnmower but the door hinges were unscrewed and the door was used as a ramp. The thief brother had a lawn cutting job for the summer. In the fall the lawnmower was brought back looking as bad as your generator. The oil on the lawnmower was overfilled to the top.
yea lets talk about *BEEEEEEEP*
PRose84
Too bad she didn't talk about those
Really like the style of your video, you are motivated, concise and funny and that is a BIG accomplishment.
So I enjoyed these videos. I think the best part though is your wife's comments to you and your expression sometimes.
I don't know anything about motors but watched your last 2 videos and have learned so much, I am a tool & Die maker by trade. Love your style of videos.
Gas station corndog my man!
Taco Bell or corn dog? I'm waiting ?
Bart Smith can i have more than one corn dog?
My bet is on pizza
Your relationship with your wife is awesome! and youre excellent at explaining and walking through a problem with a resolution. Bravo! i aspire to be like this with my significant other in the near future. minus the kids.
Woman helps you, films you, teases you, likes Taco Bell, and seems smart. Looks like you got very very very lucky. Now the generator? We dunno! YET!
I am on the edge of my seat. This generator MUST run again! Godspeed my friend, godspeed.
Goddamit, where is part 3? I have to see that genny run now!
Yes,😗, I want to see the finish. when will parts 3 come???. Thanks for sharing.

you two guys were the BEST. I absolutely loved these videos , and the end was the best. I hope you find more 25 dollar specials ! LOL !
Take her too sonic don't they have 50 cent corn dogs
I thought sonic was a southern thing. Personally, I would rather go to taco bell :P
Enjoyed both videos...Can't wait for the final one....Good Luck!
You could have just coated the cylinder walls with oil and got enough compression to find out the rings was shot 👍
You and your wife are awesome lol wasn’t even looking for answers but had to watch all of both videos. Very enjoyable.
Gas station corn dog!
Amazed that you are willing to jump into a project like this. Will be even more surprised if you can find the parts you need. Looks like a pretty tight design, hope it works for you.
10:00 legalize the medical plant!
good eye lol
LiL SLUMP
That is NOT a marijuana plant fool!!! Know your shit before you speak. That is an umbrella tree plant.
That kids awesome. Definitely not a millenial kid.
Stumbled onto you previous video and followed it up with this one. Gotta say, nicely done and you sir have a great/supportive wife!
