  • Attempting to start Horhay, our 1970 Honda Trail 90.
This motorcycle had been in storage for about 20 years. Previously, we determined that the engine turned and had compression. We also were able to make the spark plug spark. The fuel system was contaminated with old gas and rust, so in this video we work on getting it clean enough for the engine to run.

My poor old man is spinning in his grave by you not cleaning that tank… hand full of nuts and bolts and stick it on the back of the trail bike for a nice afternoons ride. Then fill with vinegar for a few days. It’ll be like new.
Always a good day watching you guys revive another unloved old crate.

My first bike was a 1964 Honda Trail & Street 90. Bought it with money from part time after school A&P. Dad hated bikes for some reason. I tried to hide it under a sheet. He came home from work and checked on us (TV shows were Howdy Dootie, Flipper, or Mousecateers. He said " what is this ?" My Mom said, its your #1 son's M'cycle. He said " Oh no,it goes back !" I said I can't , I paid cash. He said I could keep it if I got "A" s in school. Fat chance. Now I have 4 bikes in my garage ! 2 Brits, 1 fully dressed Honda Gold Wing, and a dirt bike. Never got "A's either . Love to ride but cell phone fools nearly killed me 2-3 times. Now my bikes are garage queens ! Full of great memories !

Jake take the gas tank off and fill it with apple cyder vinegar. it takes about a week to clean or you could put in a little and rotate it which will take longer! Regardless it cleans well and takes all the rust away! then spray it out with a pressure washer or even a garden hose! You put in mixed gas so it will keep it from rusting! Have a great day! Marc G.

That's a pretty amazing air filter arrangement for 1970, shows Honda really thought about the end user of the motorcycle and what kinds of use they were likely to expect from it. Alloy wheel cleaner from an auto parts store is excellent for cleaning gummy carbs like that, just leave all the metal components to soak for a few hours and rinse.

Whey hey another video... grt one ... yeah had a uk version of Honda trail , way back in 80s
We called em plaggy s like plaggy 90 due to all the plastic add ons to frame work .
Most of the plastics were due to ,I'd say uk weather ... and we're designed to keep your feet and legs dry ...also option of windscreens and also ,obviously the top box ...
Ours however was mostly for fun ,riding fields etc ...
Nice job with carb , though personally, after doing that work ..
I'd have removed the tank and ,done a good job restoring that ...
.chuck some sharp nuts into tank and some liquid that would aid rust clean up ....
Maybe strap tank to a rotating wheel or such, seen done few times before ....
Then to run engine ,maybe make a make shift clear fuel line ...Long enough to hold fuel to run engine . As a test.
    Overall though good job !!!

I'm ready to start riding my 67 90. You have to admit, they built them to run! I only wish I kept my 64 50 it looked like a motorcycle but that sheet metal frame and forks were very different from an actual bike. But it could hit a good a 50mph. In fourth and the no clutch shifting was pretty cool.
Glad to see another one revived!

The more and more I see you guys clean out carbs, the more I think my bike would benefit. She's a 2005 Honda Vtr250 that's had a hard life. I bought it running, but not running well. Struggles up small hills, hard to start if I leave it any length of time, and has a potential stuck thermostat (overheats on a cold day). The fan switch was replaced so that isn't the issue.

Those paper element type fuel filters can often cause problems with short path gravity feed fuel systems. They put enough restriction in that the gravity flow doesn't work properly and you can end up with all sorts of running problems.

Vespa boy advice. Clean tank with thinners. Then pool acid. Can mix pool acid with water and sleep over it. In morning with some clean pool acid until clean. Water then thinners. First step, thinners will remove gunk. 2nd step pool acid will eat rust. 3rd step water will put acid in neutral. 4th step thinners will soak up all water. Brilliant. I know right? Get some good quality red etch primer. I used coastcoate etch primer. Plascon. If you are using other etch primers. See if petrol eats it. 99% of paint and petrol do something. You want to add cup. Put it in sun with some air flow so paint can dry. Take note: pool acid will eat tap. Tape both sides. Once paint gets like syrup. Open up and let the rest run out bottom. Give it few days to dry. If it was flop. Just add thinners and redo. Now before you question my idea. Just now that I started off on LML scooter with my friend but they kept calling us the lick my lolly boys. So I have moved on to vespa and have owned the business. Only vintage scooters though. This is permanent solution and in my own scooter had no problems for over 5 years. Infact. I own 3 scooter with etch primer linings and do it for clients. That white stuff to line tank just so expensive. Once you done. Your tank few litres smaller. With etch primer about 100ml stays behind. No one will know difference.

    • @EddieEloff
      @EddieEloff 4 месяца назад

Oh, while etch primer dry. Turn it all direction. So it coats tank evenly. Other wise it will be thin layer on top. So as well when you have acid. Top of tank will still have rust. Turn Turn turn. ..

I've developed a straightforward way to clean old rusty lacquered fuel tanks that works extremely well for me.
step 1- drain, flush with water/degreaser/shake with loose drywall screws
step-2 fill/soak with denatured alcohol to dissolve varnish. repeat as necessary
    step 3- fill with evaporust
step 4- flush with water, and immediately flush with premix gasoline to prevent flash rust
