  • Bagan ပုဂံ, formerly Pagan, is an ancient city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Mandalay Region of Myanmar. From the 9th to 13th centuries, the city was the capital of the Bagan Kingdom, the first kingdom that unified the regions that would later constitute Myanmar. During the kingdom's height between the 11th and 13th centuries, more than 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries were constructed in the Bagan plains alone, of which the remains of over 2200 temples and pagodas survive.
From 1044 to 1287, Bagan was the capital as well as the political, economic and cultural nerve center of the Bagan Empire. Over the course of 250 years, Bagan's rulers and their wealthy subjects constructed over 10,000 religious monuments (approximately 1000 stupas, 10,000 small temples and 3000 monasteries) in an area of 104 km2 (40 sq mi) in the Bagan plains.
The Pagan Empire collapsed in 1287 due to repeated Mongol invasions (1277-1301). Recent research shows that Mongol armies may not have reached Bagan itself, and that even if they did, the damage they inflicted was probably minimal. However, the damage had already been done. The city, once home to some 50,000 to 200,000 people, had been reduced to a small town, never to regain its preeminence. The city formally ceased to be the capital of Burma in December 1297 when the Myinsaing Kingdom became the new power in Upper Burma.
Bagan survived into the 15th century as a human settlement and as a pilgrimage destination throughout the imperial period. A smaller number of "new and impressive" religious monuments still went up to the mid-15th century but afterward, new temple constructions slowed to a trickle with fewer than 200 temples built between the 15th and 20th centuries.
On 6 July 2019, Bagan was officially inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1995. This makes Bagan the second World Heritage Site in Myanmar, after the Ancient Cities of Pyu.
There is so much to see and do in Bagan. It’s a destination that should be on every serious travelers list.

One of the best times I’ve had in awhile. I can’t wait for my next trip to Myanmar. Very underrated place to visit.

Ok if you had to choose Ankor Wat or Began which one did you like better?

I think they are on par with each other. It’s easier to get to Angkor but the crowds also reflect that. The ruins are much more impressive individually at Angkor but the sheer number in Bagan is mind boggling. I would have to give Angkor the nod though. I am a lucky man to have been able to visit both though. What did you think of it in the videos? Look like a place you would want to visit? This video was a highlight one with scenes hundreds of temples that are everywhere mixed in. I made longer videos of almost everything though.

The temples in Angkor are more beautiful but as you say the sheer numbers of temples in Bagan is just amazing and it's much less tourists than in Angkor and maybe that makes Bagan a winner nowadays.Really love both places.@@endlessjourneytravels

@@henrikjohansson5904 I agree. I hope that tourists will come to Bagan soon. The locals that depend on them are having a hard time. The political situation makes it bad all the way around though.

@@henrikjohansson5904I have been trying to make a trip to Yangon to see the Shwedagon Pagoda. There is also a reclining Buddha in Yangon that I really want to see. Maybe I can talk my wife into making another trip to Myanmar this year. Will be a tough sell. lol

Hi, is it safe now to travel to Yangon and Bagan?

I haven’t been to Yangon so not sure about that. I’ve been to Myanmar twice this year and felt safe to me. I went to Bagan and to Mandalay. There are lots of military and police checkpoints but I didn’t have any issues at all. Bagan there was almost none of that and it seemed completely normal. I think it is up to each person about how much risk they are willing to take.

@@endlessjourneytravels Thanks for the info, coz seems that most of the info on the internet is not up to date, only pointing out the country is in civil war.

@@karmandalas there is a conflict going on but most seems to be in the north or in the Deep South from what I’ve seen. For me I wasn’t worried at all and I took my wife with me. I have been thinking of a trip to Yangon, just need to find the time and money to go. lol if you go have a good trip. Amazing place to see.
