    You are correct C1 is much better than LR for xtrans files. However a cheaper alternative for me is to use the Iridient xtransform plugin in LR. Just as good as c1 and I keep lr workflow and catalog.

  • @Charlie_YS
    @Charlie_YS 5 месяцев назад +2

    LrC and PS, I'll always use them. C1 what it does is it treats the image automatically before you can process it. This is a business issue, C1 comes together with Fujifilm for such a case. In conclusion, with the advancement of Photoshop and Lightroom Classic, it shouldn't be a problem. Lightroom shows you the most file in its natural state. There are now more applications or extensions that help improve sharpness or noise in files.

    I was a long time LR user but tried C1 when LR didn't play nicely with my Fuji files.
    The turning point for me was one particularly tough shot that had a grossly underexposed section (deliberately so, just to see what the results were).
    This shot had a series of cables in it. All but one were light grey. One was bright yellow.
    When I tried to drag detail out of the deep shadows, the LR version was definitely noisier but more importantly, the LR version had lost the yellow in that one cable. It was yellow in C1, as it was in reality.
    There was also the wormy artifact issue with LR, particularly in green areas of my Fuji files.
    I changed to C1 about 3 or 4 years ago and have no plans to return to LR.
    I find the subtlety of control over tone and colour in C1 to be excellent. I have heard the LR has improved in leaps and bounds in recent times, partiicularly with masking but C1 has excellent masking so it would be well worth your time to do the 30 day free test with a full version of C1 to test out the masking and many of the features that are not in the freebie Fuji version. I started with the freebie Fuji version, moved to the full Fuji version and now have the regular full version to allow me to edit for others occasionally.
    Unfortunately C1 is more expensive than LR but, IMHO, worth the difference.

    Hi Gary, Cool Video. I am a fuji user and switched to Capture One about a year ago. But I also use Lightroom Classic. I took a deep dive into the differences between the two because I recognize your observations about sharpness. The difference can be attributed to two main things as I see it. First is that Capture one renders more contrast by default. Second, Capture one applies sharping and noice redaction by default. LR Classis does not. At the other hand, LR does suffer from the well known fuji worms but that only is a problem is images are sharpend to the max and use the texture slider extensively. In fact, the worms give an image a more pleasing and quieter look and feel. The noice in CaptOne is more digital and in LR more natural. Anyway, if you undo the default sharpening and noice redaction the images are more similar. CaptOne does render more contrast. As far as my personal preference are concerned I find fuji images in LR more pleasing to eye. They seem to be more in balance. Because of the high contrast and sharpness in the CaptureOne images, they are "bussier" to look at. There is more going one. So for street, landscape etc LR is my editing program of choice. For portraits, fashion and low light though, it will always be Capture one. In your video the highlight spots on the face are fare easier to manage in CaptureOne than in Lightroom. Also skin tones are way beter to adjust in CaptureOne. And in terms of low light, The noice reduction in CaptureOne is second to non. Where LR make an image flat where all details are lost when noice reduction is applied, CaptureOne retains the details and the noice reduction is more nuanced. I like CaptureOne better in terms of workflow. Importing, exporting, rendering, it all is faster on my MacBook M1. Anyway, I hope my findings will help you a little in understanding the difference between LR en CaptOne. Good luck!

    Hi Gary I changed camera systems three years ago and found my raws were not looking great in Lightroom. Also I was not able to use film simulations so went over to Capture One as I didn’t want to pay a subscription. I haven’t looked back since. There was a learning curve but once using it I got better results. Also better connection for tethered photography.

    I have done comparisons on my channel as well. I was shocked at how poorly LRC handles color and sharpening when I started comparing. C1 Express for Fuji definitely does a better job than LR but I have found and shown that DxO PureRaw (and presumably by extension DxO PhotoLab) does a better job than either, and using DxO PureRaw to preprocess my RAWs allows me to keep using Lightroom, which is nice because I'm also very invested in the Adobe ecosystem.

    • @ZeLoShady
      @ZeLoShady 9 месяцев назад

      With your workflow, does DxO PureRaw essentially fix the problems with how LR handles Fuji files?

    • @seymourecarnage
      @seymourecarnage 9 месяцев назад

      @@ZeLoShady It does. But the last major update to Lightroom Classic many months ago added a Denoise panel in the Develop pane specifically that is fine-tuned for X-Trans files, and actually does a better job in most cases than PureRAW. I basically use that exclusively now. If you're using Lightroom CC or another editor PureRAW is still the best solution, but if you're using Lightroom Classic there's no need to use a third party de-noise anymore.

    • @ZeLoShady
      @ZeLoShady 9 месяцев назад

      @@seymourecarnage Aside from DeNoising (I use topaz for my work and tend to go light anyways) do you notice differences between C1 and LR + PR when it comes to detail recover in the shadows/highlights as well as tonal changes when working with color/temp/saturation? I did a quick test between C1 & just LR and found that LR had less dynamic range for shadow & highlight recovery and often LR ended up with more washed out colors than C1 when doing big adjustments.

    • @seymourecarnage
      @seymourecarnage 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@ZeLoShady To be honest I haven't delved that deep into C1. This is a good question, though. When I was doing some of the DxO comparisons I was pushing some characteristics of a couple files pretty far in C1 just for experimentation sake, and I was surprised how far I could correct/adjust certain things. It definitely seemed like there was more headroom than in LR. Looking back it wouldn't surprise me, but I only have that anecdote to contribute right now.

    One thing that i haven't seen mentioned in the comments is that CaptureOne has a superb catalog management system - doesn't lag at all when creating or refreshing thumbnails and is super-stable without any performance issues. In this respect alone I prefer CaptureOne to Luminar or Lightroom.
    The photo editing tools and the UI took me some time to get used as a lightroom/luminar user but once I got used to it, it got intuitive. CaptureOne in the full version is still missing some features though - Lightroom and Luminar both have features for doing composite photos, which can't be done at all in CaptureOne, even though it has layers functionality. This also extends to adding frames/borders to photos during export - can't do it natively in CaptureOne and need to use photoshop or other tools to add borders.
    Another thing is that the basic styles/LUTs suite in CaptureOne is small so if you work with styles or LUTs a lot, then you will need to purchase or download extra packages.
    Other than that, i've been pretty happy with CaptureOne (primarily because of the stability and performance in catalog management) and only use Luminar or Lightroom as plugins to CaptureOne now.

    Gary I had been using C1 for the past four years for Fuji files but now have gone back to lightroom along with Xtrans plugin for raw conversion which I find does a better job with all sharpening switched off in LR
    C1 was initially great until I printed big and then I had problems with artefacts meaning I then had to switch off c1’s import sharpening which at the end of the day meant there was little advantage Also being a stock photographer LR was needed to handle large file numbers I’m all Fuji now and Xtrans is used as an extra step for raw conversion in LR
    LR on its own has a long history of not handling raf conversion due to sensor tech differences but C1 is good with care

    I normally edit by making basic RAW conversion and colour/exposure in Capture One, then do any further edits in Photoshop. I've also found that sharpening and a good 'starting point' can be found in C1. One thing I have discovered though, is that if you do a 'Denoise' using the new AI facility in Lightroom CC, the sharpening really improves.

    I left Lightroom years ago when it went subscription (I absolutely cannot stand and will not support forced subscriptions), and just picked up Capture One. I still have to learn it, but the sharpness and colours are so nice with my X100, X-S10 and GFX 50S. I also find that Lightroom colours are muted, as if there is a layer of grey over everything, which you need to conquer with editing and presets. Capture One looks so natural out of the box.

I have used C1 for about 5 years ever since I learned that lightroom dont really work with Fuji to optimise the files and its Fuji that seemingly gets it in the neck because of that. I love the workflow especially the magic brush and I use it in conjuction with Affinity photo instead of Photoshop. overall very happy, they provide regular updates if you subscribe ( which I do because I regard the monthly fee as an entertainment cost) and generally pretty good support.

    Out of the box, C1 gets you better results with Fuji Raw files, but once you change the sharpening settings for LR, or - even more - if you process the files with DxI Pure Raw 3 and then import (automatically) in LR, the difference is gone. Shadow contrast even better with PureRaw. Overall I vastly prefer the LR workflow with all the plugins available, plus I get Photoshop as a surplus in the photo subscription. Last but not least, C1 is way more expensive. But it is a good quality choice of course...

    Hi Gary,I to have been using LR from when it first came out, also like yourself I was interested in trying Capture one,and yes when you open your images they do have more punch,this is because they are adding sharpness and levels automatically on import, so 1year on I have found I can match Capture one images in LR, I have the adobe photography subscription ,so LR&PS and can't justify the extra cost,and think because any upgrades to Capture one are only free for one year so if they announce a 2024 version you have to buy the whole thing again,not sure if this is helpful for you.

For me, I use both for now and will decide in a couple of months if I abandon LR. Capture one for my GFX system and other important images (not a pro...) while using LightRoom on the rest mainly becuase of the fast editing to feed the trash that social media is... 😉
