2024 KTM 300 XC-W Honest Thoughts - 25 Hour Review

- After 25 hours of riding I figured it was time to give you my honest thoughts on my 2024 KTM 300 XC-W. I have been pretty hard on the bike and have ridden it in several different environments. From single track to hard enduro, road use & more. What are my honest thoughts coming from the GOAT carbureted 2018 model..
Long story short I love it and think it is the best XC-W model yet. The new TBI (Throttle Body Injection) system is running a lot richer giving me confidence that the engine is getting the proper lubrication it needs. This is by far the TAMEST motor yet and for some it just won’t be enough but for those who like to play in the woods this delivers the most useable power bar none.
If you are looking for a fast bike get an XC, if you want the ultimate woods weapon go for the XC-W and you will NOT regret it.

I am now at the age of 56, haven’t ridden since 2017. I purchased this bike a few months ago and now have 22hrs on it. For me, this is by far the nicest bike Iv ever owned. I agree with you as it seems to be performing better with more hours I put on it. The power is perfect for me, it could be a little snappier for log jumps, and getting that front end up a little easier. This thing is a freakin tractor when it come to hill climbs. Good review!
Ive got the husky version and love it, but the little 'miss' at low rpm as youre about to blip it over a log is frustrating. I cant find any info on what causes this, let alone anyone else who experiences it... ive got almost 20 hrs on mine.

taking the factory plastics off a new bike and running new plastics until you're ready to sell it is the dirt bike version of rolling the odometer back on a car. it worked for a while but now when i see it on marketplace the value has instantly dropped and i'm looking the bike over 3 times as hard
I find it very strange that the Japanese brands have completely abandoned a huge sector of dirt bike riders. I think more and more people are enjoying woods riding and hard enduro. Not everyone can splatter themselves on an MX track on the weekend. We need to go to work monday morning!
Especially for big guys, anybody over 175 lbs isn't going to be a good mx guy🤣
They do have the X models, but that's still a long way from a 2 stroke woods bike.
Only yamaha right now. I own the yz250x. Great bike but still no xcw
@@jacobhanson9009 Yeah, you really have to want to make it happen with the Yamaha. No kicker, cable clutch, not much lug, 250. From a company as big as Yamaha, you would think it would be fairly easy to update the bike? From what I heard, they have left these bikes as is essentially for 20 years becuase of emissions? Same with the DRZ's, KLX, and whatever outdated monstrosity Honda puts out.
I have not ridden any 300's how would the WR250R compare?@@OtisFlint
Great Review. Good to see someone be honest about what makes a bike fun in the woods for MOST riders... often these reviews seem to want to focus on the top few percent that need stupid power and all the bells and whistles. If you and the lady are ever in the Southern Maryland area (south of DC on the "western" side") let me know. I have a 3 KTMs you could hop on and make some content: 1290 Super Adv S, 690 SMC-R, and 500 EXC-F. They are all 2023 models so not the *new-new* but still pretty relevant for the content machine!!
Great video! Thanks for sharing
Think im about to get one of these, great review
I don’t think mine is slow at all… no it’s not a 450 torque monster and doesn’t have mx gearing but when you get on the pipe it rips around my trails as fast as I could ever want 🤷🏻♂️ love this bike
I have a 2023 CRF250F inspired by your 250F videos. I love it but is heavy and good for most of my riding. However I have been considering the 300 XC or XC-W. I just rode the 2024 300 XC and it was a beast. While I want a 2-Stroke for its light weight, low maintenance and slow speed performance (not overheating) it still had a little too much of the 2-stroke power feel. The Green map was insane. I’m hoping that the XC-W’s standard map is a little more mellow??
I have been thinking about getting back into it. Have not ridden in 10 years had two cr 250s and a 450, did not like the 450. I was contemplating the ktm 300 xcw but was worried it was too much power. Glad to know there are easy to ride off road bikes out there. Good review!
You will love a 300xcw. I’m 59 and also had cr250 and 450’s. The ktm is like best of both worlds. Buy the bike 👍 9:28
I think the new subframe is a non-issue. It is cheaper than the old aluminum one. $150.
The huskys didn't break much... usually in a crash that would bend an aluminum model. The real problem with the Huskys was that replacing the composite subframe was over $400.
Just found out KTM is owned by Baja 300 Austrian technicians laid off what the heck is going on? We are told by actual KTM technician they would not touch a KTM anymore with your 10-ft pole KTMs 300 are blowing cylinders off or 2024 Husqvarna was leaking oil so bad out of the shift seal they replaced it twice now. Is this true? Please tell what you know about this
I can only have one bike. I live in Colorado, enjoy the harder side of enduro and race enduro series. I’m concerned about the PDS causing sections like whoops or higher speed to be unacceptable. How do you think the new designed PDS would do for me? I’ve been leaning towards the TE300 due to PDS.
get the te300 you won't regret it. I had the same concern with PDS on an xcw. I went te300pro for the linkage suspension, brembo hydraulic clutch and brake.
Do you trust the oil injection system? Been on the fence about it.
Way more than TPI yes.
I’ve heard fouling plugs is an issue on the tbi. Have you had any problems?
💯 agree with your summary. These bikes have very impressive engineering and generally have excellent fit and finish. They are fun to work on and fun to accessorize with protection and things.
As for the pipe protector I couldn’t agree more. I bough several older KTM models that came with the carbon pipe guards and I took them off. I think hitting the guard hard transfers all that energy to the pipe/engine connection point. I’d rather replace a pipe than an engine case.
In regards to how they perform? Well you nailed it. As I get older riding fast just doesn’t appeal to me as much. Slow, technical, methodical riding is so much more rewarding and generally safer too.
Cheers on a great vid.
If you're looking for something different, I'd like to extent an invitation for you and the crew (and anyone who would like to ride) to come to Crow Canyon in Uhrichsville, OH 44683 the 1st weekend of November,(4th and 5th) for my clubs annual Turkey Run. KTM will be there where you can demo their off-road bike lineup ( no MX bikes this year). Yamaha was scheduled to be there, but had to back out because of scheduling conflicts. We have 450 acres of trails, an MX track, as well as a kid friendly MX track. There will be two loops set up, one "easier", and one much much more difficult, a food truck and vendors will be selling their wares. Again it's Crow Canyon MX in Uhrichsville, OH November 4th and 5th. Yes I will be on my 19 TPI 300 XCW... love that bike...
I like the improvements of 2024s. BUT it has two major problems. One: stiffer frame compared to the 2023s and younger. Not as friendly for hard enduro as it used to be. But the biggest problem is the placement fo the fuel pump. It is on top of the tank and cannot use the last 2 litres of fuel. That is 22% of fuel that you cannot use. My friends who bought this bike are so dissapointed. I am a rally rider and fuel capacity is the biggest issue we deal with when building our bikes. The have the same ill placed fuel pump on 4T models.
Hi. I have 2021 excf and I can run the fuel all the way down in the tank. I mean REALLY down. When the fuel thingy starts blinking I've got less than 10 miles. I think It may be a little different on the new TBI's, because everyone seems disappointed in the fuel range. YMMV
@@cakejob69 right. Pre-2024 bikes have the fuel pump in the lowest point of the tank. So it works as it should.
Just got a 24 TE 250! 1.9hrs so far coming from a KTM 4 stroke… I can definitely see why you said you shouldn’t be riding a 4 stroke in the woods and trails 😂 My new 2 stroke is amazing in this stuff although the 4 stroke is a fast beast!

Dude I just got my 1st KTM 300 and its super light and the engine is amazing! I kept hearing about how good they tractor and its all true!
what FMF pipe is it? Sounds good and deep in the end of video. Do you feel some difference compared the stock one?
Is it really the best 300 Ktm so far? I mean people say this every year…
Riding slow in the woods is why I bought a 2022 KLX 300R. It just tractors up hills!
I have the exact same bike. It's a good one.
Great review of this bike.. probably the best/honest one yet. I bought this 24 xcw a few months ago, then bought a 24 250xc. I ended up selling the XCW! Both good bikes but I like that fact that I can go slow and FAST on the XC.
Thank you Shareef! Glad you agree, thankfully there are endless pumpkins out there.
Tractable power is all that matters, which is comprised of several elements consisting not only of the engine configuration but also the gearing, geometry, and suspension setup. It's a complex, interwoven tapestry of design that gives every bike its unique signature and and ride characteristics.
Love the look without the stickers. So clean.
Your riding vids are my fav keep them coming brotha!!!
Anyone know what parts you need to run the number plate instead of the headlight? Maybe without removing the speedometer?
Replaced my chain guide with the Acerbis one. Its better on that chain rubbing
Is there a road registered version of this bike? I'm thinking of getting a 300 smoker for slow technical stuff. Crf450l is a handful going slow
Overseas they are! I have a plate for mine, some states are pretty hard to get one though.
I plated my 23 gasgas ec300 in Colorado. Pretty easy, just add a horn, mirror, brake light and DOT tires. Now it's titled as a motorcycle instead of an ATV.
I really don't understand why people use swingarm guards... It's a huge hunk of metal. It's probably the strongest thing on the bike. Why does it need a guard? Buying plastic so you can look at scratched plastic instead of scratched metal seems silly.
Anywho, big fan, keep the vids coming!
Is it a better bike than CRF250F?
How does this compare to the husqvarna fe350 you had
350 still doesn’t like to go slow compared to this, way more clutch work which results in a lot of stalling the more tired you get.
@@AdventureDailyhave you ridden a 350 with a rekluse? I wonder if that would resolve the not wanting to go slow and stalling issues.
At 20 hours on mine and its ben a JOY... so happy with this current generation. Great review man
At 6'4 i dont know how you ride stock pegs and bars without feeling cramped.! Also where are you from. Always looking for new riding friends
You say you're 6'4"...curious, How much do you weigh? Because, well...I'm a short @ 5'8" weighing in at 230lb. But, I have a wing span of 6'1". Just want your input if your weight is around where mine is and the sound of how happy you are with the ride.
Thanks in Advance.
Bonus, When you offered for anyone to try otu the bike, stating, "that's what these things are for". I couldn't agree more. I have a 2002 XR400 that I've been rolling around in the washington mountains for years on. Well, my fellow millwright brothers i work with every week, would listen to me about the single track trips up in gods country around Mt. Rainier and Mt. St. Helens or even the coastal range. They would say how they'd love to get out there and see it. Soooo....I bought another XR400. Figuring out that in most cases, that was too much bike for most. But, yeah, I get it. Make a bike available for someone and watch the memories roll. Come monday, the stories would be epic from their point of view. Few wives are pissed their ol man went out and bought bike. haha That's a consequence i can live with.
Excellent review. I am getting the same bike within a month. I ride similar terrain in Appalachia. In your opinion, is the "hard-enduro" version of this bike worth the extra couple grand? Thanks for the content.
Thank you Baylee! Definitely not worth the money unless you love the graphics and don’t want to spend the extra time installing those few extra parts yourself.
From Australia, great honest video mate!!! I watched your video when you bought it, now I have subscribed! I have just put down a deposit on this bike, I can't wait to ride it!
One good thing is the new subframe is half the price of the old husky composite subframe
Big fart at 5:44 lovely !
Hey did you have to do any modifications to add a number plate to the 2024 xcw? I just got a 24 300 xcw and want to put a number plate on to
Most people wildly over estimate their speed they think bexause the bike feels fast they are going fast. 40 hp to the wheel is more than enough for woods racing probably up to the a class. My 350xcf is a bear in the woods if its reak tight or the fatigue is setting in
Great video and very helpful. What maintenance did you do over the first 25hours? Also what maintenance have you done since?
I don’t think calling the xcw s slow is accurate, more so how smooth the power has been dialed in for bottom end torque
I like the bike but I'm just going to spend 14k for a trail bike. Maybe if that was my "thing" but i have several "things" so i can't have the best of everything .
I have the 250, amazing bike too. Can you tell me how many clicks out compression and rebound on suspensions and shock? And fast compression, how many turns out? Looks like the same type of terrain i ride. Thx for your content
Thoughts on your chicks Beta? I pretty much want a modern xr200r as im only 5'8
Hard to find parts? Because it’s still a super new bike I’d assume. Or maybe because you shop at AOMC 😂
Sounds like an ideal woods play bike. I sold my 2019 WR450F that was all modded out and it was just too much of a beast in the woods. I have been looking at the GPX 300 since Megs loves hers so much.
Yeah I’m a happy camper, most modern 4 strokes are just modified MX bikes but the XC-W is built from the ground up with a purpose. The GPX looks to be a good bike for the money but remember she got hers for free haha.
She's getting paid to sell them dude.
@OtisFlint I know. She's going to sell hers so I might see how much when she gets back to DFW . Might buy it.
@@Ronin8451 Those bikes are complete junk. You will regret it.
Review the new frame...new forks....tbi....you forgot the most important
23 Beta 390. Trail slayer. Shocker express front shocks correct rear spring. Fuckin send it!
My buddy just looped his '24 out the other day and cracked the sub-frame, nothing major either, no rocks, just a dirt hill that hooked up a little too good.
Awesome bike,I know u said u haven’t changed the gearing, but it might help with your chain eating the guard. One tooth on the front bigger. Hell go up on the rear also, make it more of a tractor. You might like it. Don’t know til u try it. I have a yz450f I changed the front sprocket- 2 teeth bigger, to race my brother on his KTM 525. Anywho- the chain doesn’t even touch the guard now. And I can’t even hear anything when I roll it.super smooth now. But 1st gear is like 2nd now. I swear it will do 100mph.Keep them coming.✌️🙏🇺🇸
What your warm up procedure? Do you let it idle on cold start? Or do you just drive off and take it easy for a mile or two? I just bought a 24 250 XCW. Manual is vague about it.
Normally idle for a minute or two and take it easy for the first bit as you mentioned. These bikes are well oiled not at all like the TPI bikes that required LONG warm ups.
much different review from your initial video saying it wasnt much better than your honda air cooled... I am glad you are liking it. Seems like one of the best bikes out there
Ptech skidplate pipe guard combo is 100% the way to go. Never replace your pipe again.
I'm still to see proof that there is no difference between lubricating the bottom end with oil only vs oil diluted with gas. I'm of the opinion that the former is better for longevity.
Does yours run rich to the point of loading up and needing to be cleaned out? I'm finding that with mine in the tight woods? Can make some quick hill climbs problematic.
The way you say it's not fast, as we talking in the same realm as drz in the woods or still more than that? I always thought those new 300s would be awesome
Great stuff
Thank you!
2 strokes are awesome
“Shouldn’t be riding a 4-stroke in the woods”…..?
Good stuff Tanner
When you start back after Tibial Plateau Fracture
Great review. Thanks for posting.
Have you ridden the newer Beta’s to compare?
No but I’d love to get my hands on one.
I have a 24 300 Race Edition and would be happy to meet up for a test day. You are only a few hours from me.
Maybe i should go back to the 14 front sprocket?
Weight? Feeling on the trail, etc? Easy to pickup?
How would you compare it to a Honda CRF 300L?
I really want to get one of these for a dedicated woods, desert bike because I have my 21’ Husqvarna fe350s that’s my all round dual sport longer rides and 3-4 day camping trips bike but it doesn’t do great on the short outings without flaming out since it’s still in stock form without ECU & exhaust.
I ride a 18 fe350 completely stock. Slow technical stuff. Mostly up to 2nd gear, sometimes 3rd.
You need to get a bulletproof designs chain guide tab protector it’s a must for off road riding
Why did you remove the headlight but not the taillight?
Question 1 of 2:
What brand is your hydration waist pack?
Question 2 of 2:
I have a 2024 KTM EXC-F 350, which stabilizer/damper would you suggest? I've been looking at Scott's and Precision Parabolic.
Thank you for your great videos and advice.
I use the Dakine 5L waist pack; amzn.to/3xvD2u6 , I absolutely love it but there are smaller sizes as well.
As for stabilizer I can't really comment as I haven't had any experience with either of those brands.
Thank you very much for your time and information.
ve33s is the best tire IMO
For the Midwest it's king!
Not a proper review without a solid header dent 😂
Can't wait to get more hours on mine! How do you like the scorpion helmet?
what swingarm protectors are you using?
What swingarms covers are those? The magnet ones?
We have taken a file or dreamed to the chain guide to clearance it out just a bit so it doesn't rub! My other buddies and I just bought 3 hard enduros!

Does the 300 feel as heavy as the 2023 tpi 300?
when are you supposed to be getting your Stark Varg? i thought you were supposed to be one of the first ones in Ohio.
Yeah that’s what I was told lol. Even got a call from a rep telling me they were going to push my order faster.
Why did you remove your head light
I really like the design of this bike. I see why you love it.
A kawasaki 4 stroke is winning the enduro series in ohio and surrounding area. 😂
Use the word "Enduro" lightly. There is a big difference between Hard Enduro, and a regular Enduro😂
You can do yourself a favour and get the map select switch. One mapping is super torquey in low rpm´s - smooth and linear. I love it in super tricky or muddy terrain. The other mapping is like the classic 2 stroke feeling you know from the tpi
Is that something that has to be ordered at the time of purchase or can be added on later ?
U can buy and install it afterwards - it's easy...
Did you sell the 250f
thanks , that was quite interesting ;;
I’m stuck on thinking that is an XC not an XCW. did he take the headlight off before he removed the graphics or after? Stuck. Can’t focus on anything else he says.
Is english your original language? This is a 2024 XC-W, I have removed the factory plastics and headlight.
lol. Thx for clarifying. I do like your channel btw. I will try harder to make sense of removing the headlight. Keep up the great work and fun!
Thanks! No worries. I looped the bike out and broke the mount for the headlight so I put a number plate on temporarily to replace it and I enjoy having less bulk. @@critdogg76
That poor expansion 😅
where you at ill ride it?
subscriber to view ratio seems wack. Bot.
Yeah RUclips hates sharing my stuff, been at it since 2018.
I love mine so far. Only thing that sucks is I’m a short guy 5’6”ishh lol.. I think I might try out a lowered seat from guts I think it’s 20mm lower which might help a little. Really don’t wanna alter the suspension at all with lowering
5’7” here lowered the bike 1.5” and put the KTM power parts lower seat on and it made a world of difference. The drop didn’t affect anything in my opinion just made the bike easier to ride. Race tech.
Good to know! If you don’t mind me asking what did race tech charge to lower it? You sent in your forks and rear shock to them? And yeah definitely going to get a lowered seat too
My local guy that’s a Race tech shop did it and it was only 300ish. I just left the bike there. He explained the only thing that gets done is a shim gets placed in so the stroke doesn’t fully expand. The difference of where the stroke starts in the rear negated needing to go to a lighter spring as I’m under the stock springs weight range. Good luck
Nice helmet bud
Great video!

what pressure do you run on front forks?
These are closed cartridge spring forks, if you mean pre-load they are 23 clicks out.
Excellent review, best so far and this guy puts out nice vids. I like how he didn't dog the TPI...I have both TPI and TBI (and carb) bikes and absolutely love my TPI. I am also really enjoying my TBI bike - for those of you on the fence it's not worth paying that much money to dump your TPI for a TBI. I will say the TBI is very nice though. BTW have you noticed a lot of the hard enduro pros are keeping their TPI bikes?

"shouldn't even be riding a 4 stroke in the woods anyways" lol. I've had and ridden both in the woods for a long time. Current bike is an FE 350. It works wonderfully off-road, and I've had it 4 feet underwater 4 hour ride from the truck. I've had other bikes over the course of owning my FE350, and I just keep ending up back on the 350. I don't know what it is, it's been the most reliable and capable bike I've ever owned. It could be partly the satisfaction of outriding somebody that's hoity toity about two strokes, idk.
I have both the 350 and 300, and I'll agree,, the 350 is great in the woods, but there's just som8about a smoker....
