  • 2024 KTM 300 XCW vs 2024 KTM 300 XC in a head to head shoot out. youtube.com/@dirtabletv?sub_co... This dirt bike comparison was made with the average or regular rider in mind. The pro's can ride anything and most don't spend hard earned money on a bike. Regular riders do. I have put together this video with the help of my friend Sean Bryant, the owner of the 2024 KTM 300 XCW in this video. I couldn't have done this without his assistance. Huge thanks, Sean! If any of you have questions, feel free to ask in the comments and I will do my best to answer each one. Hope you enjoy the video. Love my 24' 300 XCW.. Just finished 800 miles of Colorado with it. It's a great trail bike and it really feels like a four stroke with lots of bottom end power. I came off two KTM 500's to the 300 and I felt right at home. No doubt the XC would be the faster of the two, but I enjoy the closed cartridge spring forks and the PDS works great. Just wished it came with a map switch.

      @@dirtabletv My buddy with a TE300 told me I had to change the gearing to 13/50 and the bike would be perfect. I didn't listen to him and I ran the stock gearing which is 14/45, it's only 2 less teeth less on the rear than the magic combo of 13/50. I thought the stock gearing was perfect. It's got plenty of bottom end to crawl in tough single track and can cruise at 55mph on the transfer sections. For my riding style the stock gearing was perfect. .

    I got a 21 Husqvarna te300i (tpi with a map switch) last year, which is basically an xcw. I came off of years of mx bikes but wanted something different and was leaning towards an xc type model. However I got a great deal on my te. I absolutely love the bike. I live on the east coast as well so I think the bike fits the trail style here best. Plus it is road legal which gives me better access, as a lot of trails here are closed or are for snowmobiles. Anyway, the xcw would not have been my first choice, since years of owning mx bikes, but I’m more than happy with what I got.

    • @dirtabletv
      @dirtabletv  11 месяцев назад

      You have a great bike! I much prefer the TE over the XCW for the linkage. I had a TE in ‘16 and a TX in ‘21. TX had the TSP kit. Over 260 hours and it’s been flawless. The added power (smooth power) is awesome but it gives the engine much more oil and the TPI’s are super lean from the factory. My 24 XC seems to be the opposite, very rich off bottom. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to watch and comment! Much appreciated.

      @SeanBryant-mw5jf 11 месяцев назад +1

      This is Sean, the XC does have more spice than the XC-W. Can’t really say buyers remorse, but based on that first loop we made if i decided only from that loop yes the XC, however I bought the XCW for what it was built for. Slower, harder obstacles. I do believe once the xc-w is set up for my weight and size it will be an amazing bike. It’s great at stock just not as in your face as the XC. The XC handlebars were set better for my height. The pds is not as stable at high speeds, but mostly because of the rider is way over weight for this suspension. The motor is great. The power is great. You can’t go wrong with the XC-W cause like Chad said, you can spice it up. I’m 52 and a very average rider, the xcw is great. Hope this helps.

Just need to add the XC-W light and stator. Great review!

    • @dirtabletv
      @dirtabletv  10 дней назад

      Thank you. Helping the regular rider is my goal, glad this helped you. That's how I view my XC... a trail bike that is as capable as the others but just has a little more spice. I ride with a big group and just about every other bike is present. The XC, in the right hands, can lug, climb, ride slow and do the super technical stuff just as good as the other bikes. Now when you get up to the real pro level, it may change but 98% of us will never reach that status. I didn't do a light but I do run the Tusk radiator fan and its been flawless and has a much smaller power draw than the others so my stator is stock too. Love this bike! Thanks for watching and I hope you consider subscribing.

      @dirtabletv  11 месяцев назад +2

      Yep, some like the mellower hit and some of the fastest guys I’ve ever seen prefer it that way. To each their own. I am just an average rider with an opinion that carry’s no weight in the Moto world. That said, I don’t think the XCW is the best KTM ever but it is definitely one of the best platforms ever and this platform gives many riders a base bike that rocks and can get way better with a few cheap personal upgrades. They can’t make everyone happy nor build THE very best bike ever-for all people and all locations. This bike is a giant step in the right direction!

      I haven’t looked into the flywheel weights XC vs XCW but last week we did a 23 mile loop of hard enduro terrain and at 13/48 with the most recent map update, my XC rocked! I was shocked at how well it would lug at less than walking speed. Super impressed. A buddy with me was on a 24 300 XCW and we both had about equal results. These bikes are fantastic! Thanks for doing the comparison. I ride out west and went with the XC. I'm comparing it to my 2018 XC (Carbureted) along with the 21,22 TPIs which I have rode. I have to say the 2024 is better in many ways. In my opinion, my 18 has more power than the TPI bikes, but with the 24, no contest in the power category. In the suspension category, the 2024 is the clear winner - no contest. I'm like you in that I wish the OEMs would stop specing suspension for 180 pound riders. The majority of every day riders with gear are well over 180 pounds. I also noticed there seems to be less vibration in the bars on the 2024 but I haven't seen anyone talk about that topic. As far as the cockpit, the foot pegs are higher, but for me doesn't make a big difference. I also have to add the stock tire selection is a much better choice for me in the west. Normally I switch the tires before the first ride, but in this case, I'm riding the stock tires. Good stuff Dirtable and keep the content coming.

      @dirtabletv  11 месяцев назад

      Love this message! Always like to hear about people getting back into dirt bikes. At 6'5" I would rotate the factory bar mount to the forward position, likely go with a taller bar and some lower foot pegs. Highland Cycles just did a video on these, check his page out. Don't be scared of the 300. If you leave it in stock form, even gearing, it's not a fire breather. It can take off without ya but any bike can do that. Honestly, the 300 can be so mellow on bottom. I think more than most bikes! The 250 two strokes like to run at higher RPM's and the 4 strokes can get hot and flame out. I'd personally recommend a 300 2t or a 4t like a 350 dual sport. The motors in those are not as high compression and a bit more tame. Regardless, welcome back to the greatest sport on earth! Hope ya consider subscribing, more "regualar rider" content to follow!

      Adam! Thanks for watching my video. It’s been a while, hope everything is doing well back home. I had Two 2016 Huskies with the wife ratio gear box and me 21 Husky TX that was a pinch closer ratio I believe. My XC came with 14/48 gearing and it just felt weird. Very tall and it makes the tranny feel quite a bit different-taller. The XCW is geared at 13/45, it too feels very tall for our style of riding. When KTM changed the internals and external gearing, it’s kind of hard to pinpoint the new feeling. I’d say definitely taller but the spacing feels good and 1st is still usable at 13T. I know your trails, 2-4 gears are pretty awesome for that stuff. I could see maybe 13/49. I’m in TN now, so much different! More technical and slick as heck. Chad Dwyer

    My 2023 XC-W (Just Sold It to get a 2024) had two throttle rings available to install. Did his 2024 come with two different rings and is the electronic power valve easily adjustable somehow or is it now all done through the ECU? Just thinking that with some minor tweaks and maybe a different pipe, a person could get closer to the best of both worlds on the 'W'.

      I don't know if these bikes are coming with throttle cams or not. My 21 did but the 24 XC did not. My dealer isn't exactly up to date on that stuff and I had to actually tell them I had things owed to me... Dongle, fork decals, lever boots, etc. I didn't get throttle cams. I don't know if the XCW cam with any either. Power valve is now electronic and no adjustments. I like your thinking... I don't like PDS but a TE 300 with a head and ECU would be a great choice!

      @@dirtabletv "Throttle Cam"... that's it! I couldn't remember the correct jargon for that part. A different throttle cam could add or decrease the engine characteristics, at an analog level, depending on the choice of the cam if available as you know. So that has me wondering. The inconsistency in the delivery of these smaller parts (that are supposed to come with the bikes) is perplexing. I'm starting to understand, after being out of the sport for a couple decades and now back in, that a lot of buyers don't even know about the throttle cam options and that they should receive those other small accessory parts with their bikes at purchase.
      I also purchased a Beta Xtrainer for my wife and my youngest daughter to share along with it being "the buddy bike" for friends and family that don't have one. I lowered it for them with the 2" lowering kit, set the sag for about a 160 lb. rider and took a lot out of the seat foam too. After test riding it once I completed the suspension work, I was blown away at how nimble/fun that bike is to ride even with 2" + or -, of less travel. I'm starting to wonder if the linkage added to the experience between it and my XC-W's PDS. I still appreciate the fuel injection and the overall build quality that's far beyond with the KTM when side by side with the Xtrainer, and I like the added benefits of the PDS over the linkage, but I don't know if those benefits are worth it and I think I need more time on a comparable linkage bike (300 XC-W) to decide what I personally like more. Most of my riding is split between tight woods in the PNW coastal and Cascade mountain ranges and our more open and dry high desserts a couple of hours East. So I need a bike that can do it all well and make me feel/look better then I really am. 🤣👍
      My new bike is suspected to be in sometime this month (KTM 300 XC-W HARDENDURO version) and with my 2023 selling so quickly along with a preplanned trip to Gold Creek Lodge in northern Idaho starting mid next week for a few days, I'll be taking the Xtrainer to ride. It'll get a serious workout there. See how it goes.😬

      The XCW just felt softer overall. I'm too big for these forks in stock form anyway but the XCW was noticably less stable in the tight stuff, even on a fire road. We both took off and ran thru the gears and you can visually see the back tire wobble/washing on the XCW. The PDS can be set up properly for your weight and it will then be much better. Have you guys set up the suspension for your weight? Set your sag with stock springs as a heavy guy, and the bike will be so nose down, the bike will be un-ride-able. I did not know that in my racing days at 180, but 40 lbs and 18 years later, and a new YZ250 2-stroke I bought,--------needed a lot of work. I don't know what weight those bikes are set for stock, but I would bet a bit you guys need stiffer springs front and rear and make the ride much more confidence inspiring/enjoyable. Unstable bikes can be fixed.

      They can absolutely be made better for each rider and their weight/preferences. Nothing was done to these bikes suspension wise for these videos. As I explained in the clip, I wanted to keep them bone stock to give the most equal review and first impression I could give. Yes, both bikes need to be re-sprung. That said, in hard enduro situations, the new suspension (forks) are fantastic in the slow gnarly stuff even though we’re heavier than recommended. That said, the south east is much tighter. Cutting down your bars just to get thru is common out here and it’s not just small sections, it’s everywhere. It doesn’t mean that I’m saying one is better than the other but riding east vs west is 180* different. I’d say this to push it a little further… I think east coast riders would adapt much faster out west than a west coaster adapting out here (East). Then there’s the soil… lots of traction out west and super slick in the east. Just my opinion and I’d be happy to ride with ya on either coast.
