  • The San Juan Worm is often associated with annelide worms in the water. The worms are abundant in almost every river around the globe, and can be great when the flows suddenly change as a direct result of rain or run-off. If you are fishing for annelid trout on the San Juan River, make sure to dig your hand into the silt on the bottom of the river. The San Juan Worm has no denying effectiveness and can be a Love/Hate situation for some people. This fly is the one that most fly tiers learn to tie first. The San Juan Worm is the sole reason that many are still fly tying after a while. For a small group of people, this is what started it all. Start here, if you need to. You will catch fish with the San Juan Worm. The San Juan worm can be tied in over one million different colors and materials.

Thank you so much for posting that. I watched a guy fishing next to me yesterday in the Arkansas River completely killing it with the San Juan Worm. I will try to recreate this today, and go back out a little later this morning. Happy Fishing:)

I'm a week into my fly tying journey and I was looking to make one however the chenille I got was flimsy and not as stiff as yours. Is there different kinds of chenille?

Been fly fishing for 20 years and still haven't gottten a fish on a San Juan worm. I do great on other nymphs, wet flies and dry flies but never on the sjw. Maybe it's just bad luck or I tie and bought very unconvincing sjw.
