I found a much easier method of threading the squirmy material through the bead. After dressing the hook and bringing the thread back forward, lightly tie in the squirmy material with 2 wraps behind the bead. Push the bead back over the worm and some will stick out on the other side. Pull it through. Much easier.
I just watched this video getting ready to tie some squirmies. Here is the way I ended up doing the squirmy. It worked well and was fairly easy. I threaded the squirmy on the bead first. Then I pulled the squirmy tight and placed the threaded bead on the hook. This seems to work pretty well.
This is also the way I've tied up my Squirmy. I used a dental floss threader to pull the material through the bead. Less likelihood of cutting the material when pulling it through a 1/8" tungsten bead.
This has quickly become my favorite youtube channel for fly tying! You guys keep things (even usually complex patterns) simple which I think is more effective! Great Videos!
Great tutorial. I had not tied worms in a few years. After watching this video it motivated me to give it a try again. They turned out better then expected. Thanks for all the tips during each stage.
Thanks for this video. I tied a bunch up using this method yesterday, in several different colors. Obviously a great way to tie these. I placed a big order today for some tying supplies. Great content like this is a great way to attract loyal customers like me. Keep up the great content.
Without a Doubt, this is the best way to tie the Squirmy Wormy! Cheech, Really Good Video and Well Thought Out! Only way I tie them now!
Thanks for the pattern. I’ve been using and doing very, very well. Only thing is the second piece of squirmy always gets chewed through by largemouth, so I’m gonna try to take some wire and wrap back over the wormy.
Hey cheech. Tear mender works well as an adhesive for these squirmies, as it is water based glue as well. Tied up a dozen is few different colors, still holding up good. 🤙
To get the squirmy material to not spin on the hook I put a light wrap around just the squirmy material, and come back over the top of the hook, which then has the thread wraping the wrong direction on the hook. Repeat wrapping the other direction so the material is supported in both directions and I'm back thread wrapping normally.
What a good technique. Finally I found the correct use of the threader 🤣
Had a eureka moment at Walmart when I found the NeeDoh Ramen Noodlies in the squishy toy department. The material is the perfect wormy body. The diameter is right, FAR more durable to breakage AND it doesn't dissolve in your fly box. Best thing? Got 'em for $2 a package, five neon colors, and enough in a single package for at least 200 flies.
You're welcome.
Excellent fly pattern ! Thanks for sharing.I used this fly the other day on the Trophy water in Cherokee NC caught 7 trout at the end of the day it looked like I just removed it from the vice . Fulling Mill hooks are excellent I use them exclusively. Great job thanks.
For those that insist on a specific make of hook, see The Fate of the Furious wher Dominic Toretto says "He knows it doesn't matter what's under the hood. The only thing that matters is who's behind the wheel." lol
Nice job! I always had a hard time tying those. Thanks for the video. I’m getting squirmy just thinking about fishing one.
I love it when the demonstrators don’t take much!
This is one of the best patterns for squirmy wormy I've seen. The body section is great, but the two ends are still the weak point. I've been on the fence about using plastic worms of any type, but I might just give this a shot and see how it holds up. I see using where only artificial bait is posted. Otherwise, just throw a real worm on, like I did yesterday. No bugs out. A worm is what caught the fish.
I tied 4 of them up got the hang of it after the second one . Can't wait to try them out . Fulling Mill hooks are my favorite hooks . Thanks for the video
If you take a scrap of Micro chenille and tie that on the hook the it gives the squirmy something to grab onto hope this helps
This is my favorite squirmy pattern of the many I've seen and tried. Thank you for the great video!
What size hooks and beads are you using? Great tutorial.
Nice Squirmy Wormy mate. And for those that insist on a specific make of hook, see The Fate of the Furious wher Dominic Toretto says "He knows it doesn't matter what's under the hood. The only thing that matters is who's behind the wheel."
That's big and heavy squirmy worm with 3.8mm on size 8, at least 3x or 4x tippet? Nice video, I was having hard time to put the squirmy worm through the bead head. Thanks
Fished its fly on the yampa a couple of weeks ago …. Crazy fish getter .
Nothing like tying 3 dozen squirmy wormies and opening your box on the river a week later and they have been vaporized! Using the second strip for the body is a great idea, as mine would always spin.... And then the Soft Head by loon is prob the best advice. Still wish there was a denser, tougher material though.... two or three toothy fish and these are goners.... but hey, you can't deny the fish like them more....
Thanks for the video. I was wondering if rather than fighting the battle of threading the bead, it wouldn't be easier to wrap some wire on the hook and then wrap thread over the wire for a base ?
It could work, but it would take a lot of lead wire to equal the weight of a tungsten bead
I use a 1-2 turn whip finish with the second piece of squirmy material, seems to add to the durability!
Nice, high-quality video! my 2 cents: tying the squirmy with the Textreme Polifloss or the Uni-Stretch thread make the life much easier
Reading this comment in voice of borat make a my wiiife much easyy
Have you considered tying it with a green bead instead? The contrasting colors could work like a hotspot on other nymph patterns. I have no idea if it would work, but I don't want to have learned the color wheel in vain.
Excellent demonstration
You can put a tiny bit of superglue down before you wrap the body. it makes it way easier as the wraps don't slip around and the whole thing becomes more durable. Also, you can trim off the worm material right behind the bead, put some lead wire down then re-tie in the worm as a tail and use the free end to wrap a body over the thread and wire foundation.
Super glue will eat through the squirmy material. There are lots of ways to tie this fly, but for the bead-through method, I have found this technique to be best.
Do you think a little bit of ice dubbing in white or red behind the bead is a good idea?
Very interesting. I catch big barbel on the wye on lures, but want to try with these. Do you sell the ones you made on this vid. I’m looking for something beefy and with the tungsten head, as the water is fast and the barbel are big. Most shops sell small ones. I’m looking for something big. Please help
I'd put your bead on your squirmy worm before putting the hook point through. It'd be a lot easier. Then I'd use thick floss instead of thread, because it's less prone to cut the worm.
either way. You still would need to get it wet.
Could add some head cement directly to the thread before the whip finish if you dont wanna buy the fancy loon stuff.
Good information
Nice video
Hey Cheech, I'm having a real hard time getting my worm through the bead. Everytime I try, my bobbin threader slices my worm as soon as it gets to the bead. I've got them both wet. What gives?
It's a bit tough. Some brands of worms are more durable than others. Also make sure the material is super wet before pulling through. The size of the bead also matters. if the hole in the bead is too small it's really hard.
@@FlyFishFood I rub a bit of liquid soap on the squirmy before threading it through bead. And I use fnf squirmy material.
If you were to pick 3 colors of squirmy to have in your box what would you suggest?
Randy Matson red, pink, tan
I have to count thread wraps. I don't really care like "3 wraps, no more no less" but I can't help it, I always count😂
why not just use an extended size whip finisher and do 2 5 turn whip finishes? Ol Frank Matarelli used to say ya don't need head cement with a proper whip
How well do they work for panfish like bream?
Tried tying, could not get the wormy material to pull thtough the bead without breaking!?!
Try the same fly with deer hide colored with pens. It undulates in the water.
Hey guys, in this video is that the San Juan red worm material or florescent pink?
Skylar Holliman it’s red
Would like a printed version?
Nice
Is you dont catch anything on this fly sell all your gear and take ip knitting as a new hobby. This thing is killer.
If anybody reads this and is getting a lot of takes but no solid hook ups, cut the front part of the worm. Although this portion creates amazing movement in the water, it tends to deviate from inline with the hook shank. Especially for fish under 16in, I want their mouth to grab the rear section of the worm with the hook inline.
Cheers.
I’ve been failing at this for months and all I had to do was wet the material!? I’m throwing my bench and materials away first thing tomorrow...after I tie 100 of these as punishment for never thinking to WET THE WORM!?
jeremyott1 you should always wet the worm.
Прикольно получилось.
is this a fly or a soft plastic?
Cool
When I first saw what you tie, it`s beautiful, wish you like maxcatch fly tying Golden Pheasant cai'liao...
How do you keep the front of the worm from getting tied up in the tippet... but perhaps it doesn’t matter ☺️
What kind of bobbin do you use?
TheAwesomeAustin C&F
Crazy
Would these work for bluegill?
jeff hollis yep
Really?
Do bluegills eat worms? Some people don't think before they ask questions.
Durasquirmy would be a better name
Lol that's what I call em
how heavy is a 3.8mm Tunsten bead????
It depends greatly on the brand and the batch.
Do these work for brown trout?
After a couple days on the water, I could tell you that anything that would catch a rainbow, could definitely catch a brown.
@@jlight801 Doubtful under normality, could leaves a lot of wiggle room.
@@jlight801 Doubtful under normality, could leaves a lot of wiggle room.
@@jlight801 How many days do you fish per year?
@@1USACitizen192 Around 65 days or so, varies upon how much time I truly get. However, I agree with you. What I said was extremely broad. Trout are very particular on what they will or will not eat, thus from the behavior of Rainbow trout and the Browns that I have caught over the years are different within different times and seasons. If you ever question whether or not the fly will catch fish, than you should definitely try to "Match the Hatch". As far as Trout Park Rainbows and Browns go, this is a very effective way of catching both Brown and Rainbow in Trout Parks.
too much wasted material imo but gotta see which 1 lasts longer it might be better
Is that "basically" a squirmy wormy, or is it a squirmy wormy?
100% original... Kind of like the new Willie Wonka movie.
