    I found a much easier method of threading the squirmy material through the bead. After dressing the hook and bringing the thread back forward, lightly tie in the squirmy material with 2 wraps behind the bead. Push the bead back over the worm and some will stick out on the other side. Pull it through. Much easier.

    I just watched this video getting ready to tie some squirmies. Here is the way I ended up doing the squirmy. It worked well and was fairly easy. I threaded the squirmy on the bead first. Then I pulled the squirmy tight and placed the threaded bead on the hook. This seems to work pretty well.

      This is also the way I've tied up my Squirmy. I used a dental floss threader to pull the material through the bead. Less likelihood of cutting the material when pulling it through a 1/8" tungsten bead.

    Thanks for the pattern. I’ve been using and doing very, very well. Only thing is the second piece of squirmy always gets chewed through by largemouth, so I’m gonna try to take some wire and wrap back over the wormy.

    Hey cheech. Tear mender works well as an adhesive for these squirmies, as it is water based glue as well. Tied up a dozen is few different colors, still holding up good. 🤙

    To get the squirmy material to not spin on the hook I put a light wrap around just the squirmy material, and come back over the top of the hook, which then has the thread wraping the wrong direction on the hook. Repeat wrapping the other direction so the material is supported in both directions and I'm back thread wrapping normally.

    Had a eureka moment at Walmart when I found the NeeDoh Ramen Noodlies in the squishy toy department. The material is the perfect wormy body. The diameter is right, FAR more durable to breakage AND it doesn't dissolve in your fly box. Best thing? Got 'em for $2 a package, five neon colors, and enough in a single package for at least 200 flies.
    You're welcome.

    This is one of the best patterns for squirmy wormy I've seen. The body section is great, but the two ends are still the weak point. I've been on the fence about using plastic worms of any type, but I might just give this a shot and see how it holds up. I see using where only artificial bait is posted. Otherwise, just throw a real worm on, like I did yesterday. No bugs out. A worm is what caught the fish.

    Nothing like tying 3 dozen squirmy wormies and opening your box on the river a week later and they have been vaporized! Using the second strip for the body is a great idea, as mine would always spin.... And then the Soft Head by loon is prob the best advice. Still wish there was a denser, tougher material though.... two or three toothy fish and these are goners.... but hey, you can't deny the fish like them more....

    Thanks for the video. I was wondering if rather than fighting the battle of threading the bead, it wouldn't be easier to wrap some wire on the hook and then wrap thread over the wire for a base ?

    • @FlyFishFood

      It could work, but it would take a lot of lead wire to equal the weight of a tungsten bead

    Have you considered tying it with a green bead instead? The contrasting colors could work like a hotspot on other nymph patterns. I have no idea if it would work, but I don't want to have learned the color wheel in vain.

    You can put a tiny bit of superglue down before you wrap the body. it makes it way easier as the wraps don't slip around and the whole thing becomes more durable. Also, you can trim off the worm material right behind the bead, put some lead wire down then re-tie in the worm as a tail and use the free end to wrap a body over the thread and wire foundation.

    • @FlyFishFood
      @FlyFishFood  5 лет назад +4

      Super glue will eat through the squirmy material. There are lots of ways to tie this fly, but for the bead-through method, I have found this technique to be best.

    I'd put your bead on your squirmy worm before putting the hook point through. It'd be a lot easier. Then I'd use thick floss instead of thread, because it's less prone to cut the worm.

    • @FlyFishFood

    Hey Cheech, I'm having a real hard time getting my worm through the bead. Everytime I try, my bobbin threader slices my worm as soon as it gets to the bead. I've got them both wet. What gives?

    • @FlyFishFood
      @FlyFishFood  5 лет назад

      It's a bit tough. Some brands of worms are more durable than others. Also make sure the material is super wet before pulling through. The size of the bead also matters. if the hole in the bead is too small it's really hard.

      If anybody reads this and is getting a lot of takes but no solid hook ups, cut the front part of the worm. Although this portion creates amazing movement in the water, it tends to deviate from inline with the hook shank. Especially for fish under 16in, I want their mouth to grab the rear section of the worm with the hook inline.
      Cheers.

Trout are very particular on what they will or will not eat, thus from the behavior of Rainbow trout and the Browns that I have caught over the years are different within different times and seasons. If you ever question whether or not the fly will catch fish, than you should definitely try to "Match the Hatch". As far as Trout Park Rainbows and Browns go, this is a very effective way of catching both Brown and Rainbow in Trout Parks.
