  • Dad and I spent an amazing 10 days in the Land of Enchantment fly fishing the San Juan for their jeweled bows, cut-bows and buttery browns. I have to say, it fished better than our previous 4 trips, in fact it was pretty downright amazing with both quantity and quality, with some fantastic dry-fly action throughout the days. Hopefully you will find this video not only enjoyable but also informative and instructional as well, we like to provide info on what it takes to be successful on this beautiful river that can hopefully be carried over to your local waters as well. I’ve included some links to places and people I’ve mentioned in the video. Dad, AKA “Cowboy Don” always does an amazing job at not only shooting the video but editing the final product, I’m still amazed at his giddy-up-n-go at 82, at times I have to drag him off the river after 12 hours of fishing some days :) Enjoy, tight lines, and feel free to leave your comments! Flies most productive were:
    #22-26 midges in various colors (cream and brown especially)
    #24-26 emergers (both midge and baetis patterns, some with flash wing, some with foam backs)
    #24 annelids, red, brown and olive
    Bunny Leeches, olive
    #22-24 Parachute Adams, standard color (I colored mine olive on the stream as needed)
    #15-17 ants (my tie)
    G-Loomis NRX+ 10ft 4 wt, 10ft tapered leader to 5/5.5/6/6.5 tippet, total length 15' plus (flouro for sub-surface and nylon for dry-fly) Upwards of 18' for dry-fly.
    Yarn indicator, for me is a must. Adjust, adjust, adjust!
    Enough shot to get to the fish, whatever it takes! Always adjust for depth and current and also what water column the fish are hanging

    I've watched your caney fork fishing video on another channel like 50 times. Helped me learn what flies to use.

      I love the Durango area!! The Animas is so beautiful...its usually blown out when we are in the area, but we are headed back this September so maybe we need to make a quick trip up there :) Usually the smaller the better on the Juan, midges in #22 for lower and #24-#26 in the upper areas. Baetis in #24 were great as well, mostly middle and lower areas. Good luck, let me know how you do!

    Hi, in May this year, as part of a vacation, I visited Albuquerque, reconnected with a wonderful friend who introduced me to this fishery, which is the fabulous SJ. We caught a load of browns and a few rainbows, including a PB for me a 7+ lb rainbow. Incidentally, the rainbow took thirty plus minutes to land as it gave me the run around. I wish I could fish the SJ more, alas being from New Zealand, the privilege has to wait until my next trip. Thank you for your video, the instructions, and for highlighting this beautiful river valley.

      @damianbengree8483 thanks for the comment! It truly is a fabulous fishery...chances of hooking up with that rainbow of yours are always there, that's an amazing catch! Wish I could visit you in NZ, enjoy your next visit to the SJ :)

      Cheers for the reply. I don't consider myself a great fisher person. However, that day will live long in my memory, mainly due to the time spent with awesome people. Tight lines and stay safe.

    Are you fishing midges on a dry dropper rig??

    • @jonasweathers8688
      @jonasweathers8688  14 дней назад

      Yes and no LOL, the clip of dad catching one on a dry, he actually still had his yarn indicator on so he could find the dry easier. I started with an emerger dropper but cut it off quickly as all the fish rose to the dry, what an absolute blast!
