Fly Fishing The San Juan With MidgeMan

- Dad and I were fortunate to fish the San Juan in New Mexico for 12 days! This trip was in early June of 2020, only a few weeks after the river opened back up due to COVID-19, and the fishing was HOT!! One of the highlights for me was getting to meet and chat with the famous guide Andy Kim, what a great guy!
The most productive flies were of course tiny:
#22-26 bling midges in various colors
#22-26 Yong specials
#22 red annelids
#22-26 brassies
Also these patterns were productive in the various emergent patters.
The dry fly fishing was amazing as well:
#12-16 dead chickens
#14-16 foam ants and terrestrials
I was using my G-Loomis NRXPlus 10ft 4wt, tippets were between 5.5X and 7X only when they got super picky...5x or 5.5x is fine most of the time.

Very nice…an exceptional outing as well as outstanding video footage. Brought back some wonderful memories as I waded that stretch below the dam in 1998 and 1999 when I was stationed at Cannon Air Force Base, NM. Recall using midges on size 22 hooks to land healthy rainbow after rainbow. Trips of a lifetime! Thanks for the memories.🎣

Nicely done. Here's a bit of fly fishing history for you: I see you are using Yong Flasher fly, Yong Blood, Andy's Candy Midge. You should been before my flies were written on Fly Fisherman magazine and other media almost 3 decades ago, everyone was using egg pattern, San Juan worm, leech, woolly bugger, hare's ear, etc and average catch was less than 4 trout per day. Thanks Andy, you are the MAN! Ive tied your patterns for years and modified some for my local tailwaters, which is one reason Im so proficient and successful with midges, hence my nickname...MidgeMan ;) Thanks again and talk soon

When you come back, take a really early morning and go throw a big old sculpin or a dolly llama. The boys and I pulled out at least 7 trout an hour, none under 18 inches this past weekend doing that.
Funny you mention that! We just got back a few weeks ago and I fished some sculpins and bunny leeches out there, both were on fire 🔥 🔥🔥 Glad you guys did well!!

🤣🤣🤣 I live 20 min west of this beautiful place. Born and raised on this river. Just above the bridge I pulled a 37" German brown.

Thanks! Size #20 and #22 was working great during that period...these were tied on the Daiitchi 1273 which has a longer shank so they are larger than say a typical #20 or #22 midge hook...good luck!

Hey Luis, I actually make them from Bonnie Braid, they are the Pat Dorsey style...pretty sure there's a tutorial if you search RUclips for Pat Dorsey indicator.
A very good video. I like your attitude. The San Juan is my backyard. I fish it 125 to 150 times a year. At the 16:30 point In your video my friend Bill was in the white n blue boat behind you and on the other side wade fishing was my buddy John. I do have to say that I didn’t see anything that you showed a shot of that was 20 inches let alone 24 but that is kind of normal for people to do that. The biggest I saw was one of the first ones that you showed and I agree with your assessment of it being maybe 19 inches. Monsters do exist mostly in the Texas Hole area though. I have seen personally a 35 inch at least 22 pound brown pulled out of there that I videoed and I personally have caught and videoed and photographed two massive browns-one was 32 inches and was 14 pounds and my other fish of a lifetime was a 34 + inch fish that was 13 pounds. And I believe I have hooked into a fish that was 20+ pounds. I use a small raft quite often and this fish pulled me around for an hour and a half. I weigh 260+ pounds and with all my gear probably running close to 300 pounds on the raft. I lost it but it drug me around like a tugboat. Quite an experience. I’m glad you and your dad had the trip of a lifetime.
Thanks Scott and you're blessed to live so close and neat to see your friends in the video! Bill and John love that hole, they were there just about everytime we fished the Texas Hole. I was hesitant to mention the sizes of the bigger fish due to not having the cameras with us at all times, we only filmed a few of the 12 days and of course some of the big fish were caught when we were fishing away from each other...which seems to happen often LOL. I caught a rainbow that was pushing 24 (I use some marks on my rod for quuck measuring) on a dry ant in the upper section (around the carp pond) and didn't have my phone and dad was in the main run...the biggest fish of the trip and nothing to show but an incredible memory of watching that fish rise and take it, it was amazing. And, as you know, it actually was the least difficult to net as it just wallered around a bit...nothing like the smaller 18" that took the dry and ran me to my backing and out to the main flow. What a river...glad you enjoyed the video!

Fished the San Juan for 13 years, the best guide on the river is TJ Massey, get with him and he'll hook you up to monsters.

Planted Fish, Lazy fish, Contained fish, Deceased fish, No wild trout here and payed for 12x the recycled cost of used fish. That's the only fish you will find on The San Juan River in New Mexico the dirtiest river in the west. San Juan the biggest hidden Trap for fishermen! The Pecos has clean free fighting wild trout and believe me you will know the difference!
Actually planning on hitting the Pecos the next time we visit!!

Chris, what are you doing? Trying to turn the Pecos into the Juan?
Fished both and I still enjoy the San Juan. Biggest fish in Pecos were old breeders that were released from hatchery.
