- Featuring vintage surf footage featuring a number of prominent SoCal surfers from the 1960's along with five new tracks by The Dave Reynolds Project. This is a celebration of Dora' surfing and not the outlaw life that he lead. Sit back and enjoy watching one of surfing's most legendary figures, complimented by a smooth, contemporary soundtrack.

As an 8th grade gremmie I surfed Malibu point break all the time and made sure to avoid Mickey Dora on the beach by the wall and in the water. He surfing ability was extraordinary and fun to watch.
Why did you have to avoid Dora by the wall?

Micky Dora ..!!! Icon of our generation of surfers from the 60's. I was surfing Cerro Azul with him and others, most of them were goofy footers, he got close to me and asked,.... '' Is there any right like this around here?... I told him, '' Regret to say, but most of Peru's surf breaks 'r lefts ''. Then he took a wave and left backside. True comment..
Cesar Reyes that’s a great comment and thanks for posting that Cesar. I love hearing stories about Mickey and especially from guys like you that surfed with him - sounds like a classic Mickey story for sure!

I rode Malibu & other breaks with him dozens of times. I'm back at "the wall" someplace under all those boards. Mickey didn't have friends per se, just acolites, except for maybe Da Bull.
He had that beautiful splay legged stance when he beat out soup, really pretty to watch.
In the early 60's he used to come up to our then undiscovered break at the Channel Island Jetties, Silverstrand. He was cool with us young locals and we were in awe of his surfing. Always grateful he didn't tell anyone how good our waves were, kept it a secret. He was the gold standard for style at the time, him and Phil Edwards. Both names were spoken in hushed tones, but Dora had the mystique and bad boy rep, which made him cool as can be.
He foot work was incredible. I knew his brother. RIP to both of them.
No one is saying "imitate Dora the person", but geeze he was and still is a marvel to watch.
Dora is my favorite antisemetic surfer
His style is so aesthetic, he didn't wasted any move.

I used to have a bootleg vhs of some of these clips. I can’t remember where I got it but I recognize a lot. I wish I still had that tape 😎

Hi Linda I knew you and Miki in Biarritz. I have a memory of how jealous he was of you. We went surf Gueterey and you didn’t feel like going out. You visited your French friend Maria and he accused you of being a lesbian. 😅

You can say what you want about the unscrupulous things Dora did in his lifetime , but he did not die alone as you claimed.

Wonderful short film with perfect music! My mom took up surfing in the 50’s Malibu and my dad used to go film 8mm of Dora & Johnny Fain at Malibu … everyone was in great awe of them. We moved to NS Oahu in ‘63 but I was too young to remember Dora surfing NS. My home break was Laniakea where we never saw Dora. And never knew what a con he was only that if one took off in front of him, they could loose their life.
Do you have the film still? Would you be able to upload any of it? Such a valuable piece of surfing history!

In the late 60`s when visiting Grandma off Sunset Boulevard we would also walk down to a liquor store where I always will remember in huge letters on the side outside wall was,
DORA LIVES. AND that was in the Echo Park area not real close to the beach. YEA one of the Gods. OH and watch all the beach movies JUST to count all the Dora cameo appearances. YEA he is easy to spot with Annette and Frankie Avalon. SOCAL of my youth.
This is a great reflection Scott! Really special and fun memories. I especially love your last words "SOCAL of my youth." Thanks for posting. I lived in Thousand Oaks for about 11 years which is where I composed this music. I was able to meet some guys that surfed with Mickey - seems like the stories are endless and always fascinating.
@@thedavereynoldsproject7091AND didn't Miki come from down at San Onofre and really make trestles a spot as well. The GOD BECAUSE, Miki was the one who took surfing from pre-gidget to post gidget (or one of them) and hated the commercial kookiness of it BUT at the same time benefited with all the beach movies and using his name YEA and a little fun at Hollywood parties. Oh and not the typical blonde surfer (like me a darker surfer WELL now a MEGA-old surfer). MEMBER MIki said the sand is only there to get to the waves IF there is no waves get the hell off the beach. Love watching his dialog s on you tube, he was style BUT dark as well. AND YEA HE REPRESENTS
My long gone SoCal , basically me and brother grew up in the 60`s and 70`s in orange county surrounded by miles of lands ( Irvine what the hell is Irvine that is where we found fossils) WE were the last Davy Crockett Daniel Boones of orange county, caught native rainbow trout in Trubuco Creek in 1966 and went through hippie loves-in like scenes from Apocalypse Now, hiking through some of the valleys with our dad fishing. Grunion runs at HB and parking on the beach, the Golden Bear. OH I could go on, like I said SOCAL of my youth. Keep up the good work DORA LIVES

He was a good surfer in that era, but in reality he was just a con man and a grifter, sad and lonely person ,he died alone, read "The Surf Sting" by Linda Cuy, she details a lot of his crimes
Great new footage I had never seen before of Mickey! Dave's music is perfectly matched for all the sequences. That is the kind of music that should have been on most other surf videos, instead of loud, bashing background music that doesn't really fit.

I think some of the best sound tracks were with the Bruce Brown films, he set the bar. Dave Reynolds is right up there with this one.

Read a book on surfing that included Dora. Fascinated with surfing since.
Me too - The Surf Sting got me intrigued and it went on from there - so much culture and adventure.

Early 80s I met dora while paddling out at superiors in Jeffrey s bay . Felt privalleged to be in the same lineup. A legend.
My buddy also surfed with him back in 1990, he said when he was paddling out he saw Dora dropping in at a perfect right hander with his very distinct style, and my friend could tell from the distance it was him. They chatted for a couple of minutes afterwards.
Fun Fact: Dora was a white supremacist.
