My mom and dad drove up to Malibu for that contest. I remember Steve Bigler and Dewey ,Johnny Fame and Mickey Dora. I had really nice parents I was a lucky kid.
just another one of the locals at State Beach in S.M. I used to see out in the line-up circa 67-68. A reluctant member of the Wilken Surf Team and a true eccentric.Love the old footage haven't seen some of this for years, plus cool music. This one will stay in my favorites for sure.
This came up in suggested videos for me. Nice! I learned to surf at Malibu and one thing you learned if you had any sense at all was to not take off on Dora. Bad idea. We loved to watch him though. Best surfer I ever saw, and I surfed for many years through the transition from long to short boards.

What a modern stylist and competitor. This footage is 50 years old.

What's amazing is Dora's maneuvering. He was riding those standard 9 to 10 foot boards like they were inbvb the 6 foot range.
I saw that contest. "War at Malibu" late summer '65. Good surf that day and that summer. Some huge days around 4th of July.
Legendary footage!
love the open vest in the beginning

That was the '65 contest. The "War at Malibu". Great music.
Thanks for that info. It's a beautiful sound, and a fantastic track.
True surfer. Most adventurous surfer ever.
long live the cat! long live brad!
Fabulous
Fab'lous. Very beautiful bit of twang-dithering in that first tune. If you don't mind me asking, what type of strings are you using?
In L.A. Co. it is against the law to surf backwards, unless you are Da Cat. Then anything goes!
He was good at stylish surfing and nothing else
Miki Dora and Phil Edwards were the purist surfers...
As great a surfer as Miki was, you would think there would be tons of video...but not the case.
