Incredibly weird coincidence... I've been reading about this game all week and just started playing it yesterday, and then my favorite N64 review releases this... one hour ago!
You're on a roll with new content! I remember Tonic Trouble getting reviewed in N64 Magazine. It was one of those games where avoiding it was obvious. Got to say the graphics have aged well. But it seems like another one of those awkward 3D platformer shifts, only Nintendo and Rare really mastered them on the N64.
This game seems ok, but the N64 library was already over-saturated with 3D platformers as it was. Did we really need yet ANOTHER one? On the flipside, the N64 was starving for more fighting games and RPG's, that's where more developers should have put their focus on.
@@Nutty151 agreed. However this was announced pretty much from the start of the n64 so at that time it was hard to be aware of just how significant the console would become for the platform game genre
@@n64glennplant Very true. Mario 64 changed the rules of the game. Maybe the developer should have transformed the game into another genre once it entered development hell. But perhaps that was too costly, even more time consuming, or something else? Either way, this game just ended up being one of the rest.
Nintendo 64 was a major part of my childhood, as it obviously was yours, Glen. I started watching your videos in about 2015 I think, with the nostalgia and excitement being palpable. I'm so glad to see you making new content on N64. Keep it up!
You touched on an important point here - that now that we are adults with limited time and real-world responsibilites, an easy short game is something that many of us actually prefer (I know I do). I'm about to turn 40 and I still play through an average of one new N64 game a year - but as much as I love the N64 and love finding 'new' games that I haven't played before on it - I can't afford to put 20 hours into a game any more. Oh, and for anyone still reading this far the last 'new' game I played all the way through and loved was 'Winback' - fantastic game! - David
The new Diablo I played like 60 hours of in a few weeks but then didn’t go back….great game but it was a rare window that I had so long to dedicate to a single game these days

Happy to see new content from you Glenn! I’m a big 3D platformer fan and this is one of the remaining N64 ones l haven’t checked out yet. I’m sure l’ll find some enjoyment in it but l’ll probably agree that it looks too much like Rayman 2 and arrived too late.
Love the history leason at the start. Ubisoft seemed to shoot themselves in the foot releasing 2 platformers around the same time. Coming from the same team who re-release the same franchises over-and-over again (namely Assassin's Creed & Farcry), I am not surprised.
Sure, it might seem derivative when placed up against Rayman 2, but if you've played Rayman 2 to death and are looking to extend that experience but with something a bit different, maybe Tonic Trouble would fit the bill. Plus, it seems to have a really nice graphical look of it's own. I think i'm going to pick this one up (i'd never even heard of it).

Nah, I think they reached out to me about sending a review copy but it wasn’t something I’m interested in. It looked like a game boy title being emulated on n64. I’m much more interested in stuff like portal 64
I had this on PC and the graphics were awesome. I remember picking up the N64 version and hating it, but I always just assumed it was because I'd been spoilt seeing it on PC first.

It was the very first time I felt I was not in the mood to play a game at all, might give a go in the future, who knows.
Fantastic review...one of the few 3d platformers i still miss on my N64...not bad but not that good either...better than starshot: space circus fever at least, imho!
@@n64glennplant it was a missed opportunity..just as u said in the review, if i'm correct, it was quite worse than the pc one...i guess maybe it was the case for tonic trouble as well!
Another awesome review Glenn! Completely serious question, I thought you already reviewed Tonic Trouble? I could have sworn I've seen you review this game before. ...Am I having a mandela effect? 😮
What the hell?! I didn't realise Tonic Trouble was another platformer that fell into the 'we were sponsored by a candy company' subgenre. I mean it makes sense I've never heard that fact because not many talk about this game, but wow is that weird. Along with James Pond 2, Zool, One Step Beyond, Superfrog and the infamous Darkened Skye (even though they dropped the sponsorship just before release). What is it about Europlatformers (on the Amiga especially) that seemed to be ethically ok with pushing unhealthy treats to kids?
A lot of these old N64 platformers are on the easy side. Devs couldn't fill the screen full of enemies for the player to dodge, jump over, etc, so the levels always felt kind of sparse and empty. That said, I have an affinity for these old games. They don't really make 'em like this anymore. Mario Odyssey was a big hit - I didn't see what other people saw, apparently. I thought it was an okay Mario game, but I felt like I HAD to play through it more than I WANTED to play through it. It was well-designed and all that, I just felt the levels were too big. I prefer the smaller playgrounds in Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine. At any rate, I miss the days of the classic 3D platformer.
@@n64glennplant It just didn't feel like a Mario game to me. Maybe it's because I'm a couple years away from 50 and I prefer to play retro games. Zelda is a series that I HAD to play every time a new game was released, but the last console Zelda game I played was Twilight Princess. I guess I played the remake of Link's Awakening, but that was an old Gameboy game that was "ported" to the Switch. It was actually pretty fun - way better than Twilight Princess in my opinion.
@@Tom_Van_Zandt I know what you mean, I’m put off the new Zelda’s by their open world. I guess I’m in the minority that prefers the more linear dungeon system that worked for decades
I love Tonic Trouble, though the PC version (which is the one I usually play myself) is much better than the N64 version. There's also a set of PC beta pre-releases labeled the "Special Edition", which feature stuff like tank controls, a dynamic soundtrack, much bigger and more immersive (albeit emptier) levels, and of course the expected beta version jank. My favorite versions are the PC release and special editions.
To think that this game hadn't been covered by you after all this time hehe. This game was a classic to me as a kid. Creeped me out but also fascinating at the same time. Needless to say I also sucked at it lol
@@n64glennplant It was the general vibe I think, everything looks surreal and I felt lost all the time. As if I was trapped alone in bizarroland. I remember always sticking around the newspaper dude for some comfort. The first couple levels were fine, but the more I progressed the more I felt weirded out. I can't really point my finger on it but like I said it was just the general vibe and atmosphere. Maybe it was just me being a dum kid lol
@@n64glennplantPretty much yea. But now having watched the entire video and refreshing my memories. The castle level was what got me really creeped out, even to this day 😅 the architecture, the checkered floor, enemy design, all of it feels out of place for what I expected of a kids game back then. Especially coming from Super Mario 64 and Banjo
I remember getting this years later when I was collecting for the N64 and didn't hate it just found it a bit on the easy side and it felt too much like an early version of Rayman 2 unfortunately it was worse in every way. If this came out two years earlier it probably would have been better received but coming out less than 6 months before a game that used the same engine and was superior in every way makes me wonder why Ubisoft didn't do more to make it more than just seem like a copy of their own game that actually came out after. If I recall the camera is also not as refined as it was in Rayman 2 and often kept shaking in certain spots.
@@n64glennplant I’m not even lying 🤣 I couldn’t even get into Rayman Revolution an given I was very young at the time I didn’t know how to use the dual analogs at that time but I dunno I just found tonic more entertaining like the parts where you get a snorkel an start swimming or you blow up an become big tonic etc

Glenn video ideq for you, good n64 games you can still get for under 25 US or 30 on the cex market
Maybe one day, I’m wrapping up the last of the reviews and then have another project idea to launch
Not played any main 3d Mario since galaxy, really never saw the appeal of odyssey but maybe it’s all in the gameplay
G L E N N! FANTASTIC.
Thank you second quest, hope your bro first quest is doing well too
Four to seven hours. It's going to be another British wet weekend so this might be worth a shot. 😊
When it rains it pours 😂
I like the Aphex Twin nod.
Been a big fan for years, such a unique artist
What part spooked you out?
@@n64glennplant It was the general vibe I think, everything looks surreal and I felt lost all the time. As if I was trapped alone in bizarroland. I remember always sticking around the newspaper dude for some comfort.
The first couple levels were fine, but the more I progressed the more I felt weirded out. I can't really point my finger on it but like I said it was just the general vibe and atmosphere. Maybe it was just me being a dum kid lol
@@qaywsx583 haha I can kinda get what you mean…it’s like a weird oingo boingo music video in video game form
@@n64glennplantPretty much yea.
But now having watched the entire video and refreshing my memories. The castle level was what got me really creeped out, even to this day 😅 the architecture, the checkered floor, enemy design, all of it feels out of place for what I expected of a kids game back then. Especially coming from Super Mario 64 and Banjo
why is ubisoft had problem with arm and legs but Nintendo and Rare didn't have ??
Maybe Ubisoft watched too much Monty python and the holy grail
@@n64glennplant even more ... team 17
Don't remember this at all. Cheers Glenn.
Sometimes that gives you the opportunity to experience it all over again
Thank you ☻♥♥♥
You're welcome 😊
A video on Portal 64?
See modern vintage gamers video ✌️
I remember getting this years later when I was collecting for the N64 and didn't hate it just found it a bit on the easy side and it felt too much like an early version of Rayman 2 unfortunately it was worse in every way. If this came out two years earlier it probably would have been better received but coming out less than 6 months before a game that used the same engine and was superior in every way makes me wonder why Ubisoft didn't do more to make it more than just seem like a copy of their own game that actually came out after. If I recall the camera is also not as refined as it was in Rayman 2 and often kept shaking in certain spots.
Yeah at one point this was much slower and he tank controls so maybe like a weird puzzle style game would have been really unique for this
I loved this game more than rayman revolution on the ps2
Wow that’s high praise right there
@@n64glennplant I’m not even lying 🤣 I couldn’t even get into Rayman Revolution an given I was very young at the time I didn’t know how to use the dual analogs at that time but I dunno I just found tonic more entertaining like the parts where you get a snorkel an start swimming or you blow up an become big tonic etc
