I remember going into a Walmart in late 2002 to look at all the cool Gamecube games I couldn't afford in the glass case, and seeing in the N64 section a copy of THPS 3 sitting there. My mind was blown as I didn't ever even hear a peep about the game coming out for the console, especially nearly a year after the other 6th gen console versions. Always will go down as the fun bit of trivia as the last NA N64 release officially.

So bizarre that a Dreamcast version of THPS3 wasn’t made.
It’s astonishing, and speaks to how successful the N64 was, that its’ last game was released well after support for the Dreamcast ended!

By that point I was on the Dreamcast and probably close to PS2 once Sega announced the demise of the Dreamcast. Seeing the next generation of consoles after the N64 was an eye opener and one we will probably never see again. It always interested me though seeing a new game on an old console. It might have been inferior but it was still fun seeing what they could do

The OG XBox release was the definitive way to play, but playing this version years after the proper versions were already burned into my brain-and having played the first two on the 64 to death in my younger years-I have a sense of appreciation for some of the changes. While a lot of it was for limitations, the layout changes to levels like Suburbia and Canada were extremely interesting to me. I just wish that 3 stuck with the more RPG-like cash system of 2, rather than the more streamlined collectathon gimmick of finding points and decks.

My biggest Tony Hawk experience is of playing Tony Hawk’s pro skater 1 on N64 for hours and hours right when I got the system so my favorite will always be that version. I have the sequel on PS1 but it just doesn’t feel the same. I think Tony Hawk is at its best with compressed audio files, basic but charming visuals and a funky controller to play it on. So with that all being said, at some point I really want to buy this. Not only because of the significance of it being the final N64 game to release in the US but also because I feel like I’d enjoy this version the most out of any other version of the game

A most commendable effort considering the limitations of the N64.
For me it was the gamecube version, Played the hek out of it in a now defunct local game rental shop.

Although I often site the N64 as the console I have the most nostalgia for, the PS2, XBox, Gamecube and Dreamcast generation is the last time I felt any real child-like joy or excitement for gaming. In my old age I prefer to play games from bygone eras. The 1st time I ever played a Tony Hawk game was when I got THPS3 on the PS2. Great console and great game.

    • @n64glennplant

you know I think that was the last significant jump in terms of raw power and visuals. after the gamecube to say Wii or even ps2 to ps3 the upgrades seemed far less impressive and more a step up than a giant leap like we were used to getting

    • @Tom_Van_Zandt
      @Tom_Van_Zandt 7 месяцев назад +1

@@n64glennplant Yeah...I've been gaming since we got an Atari 2600 back in 1982/83 when I was 6 or 7. That was the only console I had until holidays 88/89 when my older brother gave me his NES when he came to visit. The visuals from the 2600 to the NES were mind blowing. You no longer had to use your imagination with the NES. The the SNES and Genesis came out and the graphics were twice as powerful as the NES! Parallax scrolling was now common in games and the SNES had pseudo 3D with its Mode 7. Then the PS1 came out, but even back then I wasn't really a fan of its 3D games and character models. But going from Super Mario World and Super Mario Kart to Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64, now THAT was mind blowing. All of a sudden we were playing in real 3D environments. Mario 64 is still a great looking game in my opinion.
But I agree 100% - the visual step up from the PS1 and N64 to the PS2, XBox, Gamecube and Dreamcast was absolutely stunning. All of a sudden I felt like I was watching a real football game with Madden 2001 on the PS2. The way the players looked, the stadiums, the fans; the way the players moved. It was a completely mind blowing experience. And then the Wii, XBox 360 and PS3 came out and it felt like it was just a moderate graphical upgrade. Really, that generation's true upgrade was how online play was completely integrated. It was built in to the consoles. I used to play some Call of Duty online, but as an old school gamer I've always preferred having friends over and playing on the same console in the same room on the same TV. It's like a communal experience that online game completely lacks. And as you've said, every generation since has been nothing more than a slight graphical upgrade, and maybe a better online experience.
I still haven't upgraded to the PS5 or Xbox Series X. It just doesn't interest me anymore. Your review of Xeno Crisis on the N64 got me WAY more excited for a video game than I've been for just about any game for this generation.

8:43 Fun fact: Neversoft was originally developing THPS3 for the PlayStation in mind, but partway through development it was moved to the PlayStation 2, causing Shaba Games to take over the development of the PlayStation version. Therefore, the beta layouts stayed for the latter version. Though the PS2 and PC ports are the "real" way to play THPS3, the GameCube and Xbox versions exist, and perform better than the PS2 version anyways. Also, the Xbox version has the Oil Rig level not found in other versions.
I guess the PlayStation and N64 versions happened because the sixth generation platforms (but the Dreamcast) weren't widely available yet, as getting one in 2001/2002 was difficult enough. Locking THPS3 to just the sixth-gen platforms (but not the Dreamcast) wasn't such a good idea, but many players did experience the PlayStation version of THPS3. If only Neversoft designed THPS3 with the Dreamcast in mind, even if Sega cut support for it in March 2001...

I played the hell out of this one on my GameCube. It's one of my favs. Last month or so, out of curiosity, I tried out the N64 version just to see how cut back it is, and was pleasantly surprised by how much of this 6th-gen-at-heart title the devs could fit on the previous gen. The GameBoy Advance version is also quite impressive for what it is. At some point I did get THPS 3 on the PC. It was okay... A bit buggy, but at least it ran fine and I got to hear my fav song from the game "96 Quite Bitter Beings". Love them guitar riffs! Nowadays I just play the game on Dolphin (GC emulator). I'd play it on PCSX2 (PS2 emulator), but something's up with its graphics.

I primarily grew up with the PlayStation 1 version that I owned in around mid-2002, which was obviously similar to the N64 version, but had more music tracks included, although not in the same number as found on the Next-Gen versions. Yes, I had seen the PS2 version via the German GameStar PC magazine when I saw a preview of the PC version (based on the PS2 version) when it was coming out back in early 2002, around the time I saw previews of the then-upcoming PC version of GTA III in the same magazine.
It was always a blast for me as a young 11-year-old playing the game (the PS1 version anyways) and listening to Blitzkrieg Pop, Papa Roach, The Mad Capsule Markets, Rollins Band and A.F.I. while skating through LA and Rio at sunset (always fitting for me), and even skating the streets of Rio itself at night downhill from the Statue of Christ The Redeemer to a pool with skyscraper buildings in the background after completing Career mode with Geoff Rowley. Even skating around an empty skate park with Church and K-Mart settings was also a blast for me. The Church setting more especially as it always gave me ShadowMan-vibes.

A.F.I. is gone from the N64 version entirely, which made me feel very disappointed. The storage limitations pretty much speak for themselves. I will always stick with the PS1 version since it does include A.F.I., and not having A.F.I. in the N64 version makes the LA and Rio stages feel rather baron and dull in my experience.

I'm not sure if I mentioned this in one of your previous videos...I've been in a sleep-deprived daze since the last few days of September due to personal family events. At any rate, I remember you seemed to be a big fan of the N64 AKI wrestling titles, dressing up like Goldust and really getting into the reviews. That said, there's a game by an indie developer - I believe in the UK - who is working on a title called Ultra Pro Wrestling, and it is being touted as THE spiritual successor to the N64 wrestling games. It really does look the part - it's got the grappling system and is even missing the ref in the ring 🤣- unfortunately, the game isn't due out for at least another year, so we'll be waiting a while
In the meantime, there's another wrestling game called RetroMania Wrestling, which is a spiritual successor the the 2 WWF arcade games, WWF Superstars and WrestleFest. It looks and plays just like Wrestlefest, but it doesn't have the big time names like Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior or Jake the Snake Roberts. The 2 biggest names it has - which is also its biggest connection to WrestleFest - are the Road Warriors Hawk and Animal. Most of its 19 man roster are wrestlers found on the indie circuits - Nick Aldis, Zack Sabre Jr, Blue Meanie, Warhorse, Tommy Dreamer, Chris Bey, James Storm, etc. It has 20 or so arenas, both real and fake. It's a really fun arcade style wrestling game.

It had just been released, but I didn't know anything about it. I always liked playing the wrestling games and when I popped the game in I was surprised to see so many people I recognized from when I was a little kid. Hulk Hogan, Macho Man, Sting (my cousin had to explain to me why he looked like the Crow), Ric Flair, Lex Luger. That's when I started watching WCW Monday Nitro and Thunder. That was an awesome time to be a wrestling fan. I stopped watching some time early 2000, but I still enjoy the video games.

@@n64glennplant I've listened to Blue Meanie's podcast a couple of times, but it's audio only. I prefer podcasts with video. At any rate, I've mostly been out of the video game loop for the last couple years due to real life getting in the way - I JUST found out a few hours ago that Microsoft and Nintendo have both released N64's Goldeneye on their respective platforms. I'm excited about the news because I've heard the framerate is more steady, but I'm also disappointed. I'm confused as to why they didn't just release the HD version that was canceled 15'ish years ago. I played the leaked version, and I'm not gonna lie, it was freaking amazing. Goldeneye running at a smooth 60 FPS. I was also looking at all the N64 games Nintendo has released on the Switch.
