    Love your videos, great top set technique. Just a suggestion, after I do a top set, I re-torque all the lock nuts and then double check with a feeler gauge that's 0.001" bigger than the target adjustment. If it's super tight or doesn't fit then I know I've hit the target. On CAT engines, the tolerance is normally 0.003" so not really necessary, but on Deere engines there is no tolerance.

    Just was doing the same overhead on friday. You are so right about making sure no wires get pinched. Nothing like the feeling of wrapping up and putting the last bolt on the valve cover only to notice a now crushed wire peeking out around # 6. PS the parts guy at Cat told me that Cat is going to be stopping all parts and support for their over the road engines. I dont know if its true, but he told me that

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  Год назад +1

      As far as I know they are still fully supporting them. Many of the same parts fit the equipment and truck engines, so it would be hard for them to stop specifically truck engines.

    2:49 i have this happen to myself and many other people i know so usually when someone asks me for a bolt i either ask for the bolt or call it "M10" seems easier to remember that the measurement of the head doesnt matter (specially allen/torx or triple square bolts)

  • @johngoldsmith6629
    @johngoldsmith6629 Год назад

    Part number for a 0.037 feeler gauge is 1535239, used on low HP 6NZ Jacobs Brake if I recall. I dislike the IVA wire splice. What I try to do first is to remove the old connector off the wire. Re-spring the connector to get it tight on the pin. Once that is done, I take the splice connector apart and put the repaired wires in the new connector. Odd thing I like to do is when I get ready to run the overhead, I rotate the engine two rounds to make sure the valve train is seated in, if I had the rocker arms off.
    Standard bolt formula, if you have a 3/8 shank and you multiply it by 3/2, 3 x 3 =9. 8 x 2 =16, wrench size is 9/16, reverse of this is divide. So 9/16 = 9 divided by 3 = 3 and 16 divided by 2 = 8, so shank size = 3/8. Now sometimes you get into a odd size. So a 5/16 shank would be 15/32, so as you can see you off just a little bit. In that case you add or subtract 1/32 of an inch and you get the right number. Works most of the time, always an exception in some cases, works on larger bolts, better.

    Iv never thought of putting the rockers on that way with the push rods.. didnt know you could pass the intake and exhaust rods in like that last. Iv always loosened all the adjusters up and fumbled getting everything lined up. Using sockets on the rockers to keep the push rods from falling out lol. Its especially hard in a bus. Iv done countless c13 that way. Gotta try this way on the next one.
    Edit: just realized you had the rocker cover off. Bet that trick with the push rods won't work with the rocker box in place

    @10:15 you are stating that the torque adapter doesn't change the torque setting? Ah, if the effect is making the torque wrench longer I believe you are getting more torque than indicated on the wrench.

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  Год назад +2

      Well, you are both correct and incorrect depending on the angle the torque adapter is in relation to the torque wrench head. If you have the torque adapter on a horizontal plain with the drive head, think directly to the right or left of the head, you are incorrect and it has no effect on the torque output. If you put the torque adapter directly up from the head it increases the torque and if you put it below it, the torque is decreased, in which case you would be correct
