The movement option is being able to shoot a magnetic node onto a monster, and being able to pull or push yourself towards/away from the node. You also build up a magnetic status on monsters as you hit them, and can perform a special move (think Gunlance’s Wyvern’s Fire or Charge Blade’s SAED) on them when they’re fully magnetized.

Nice video, I think it's rather interesting and overall a decent summary of some of the very many aspects that come together to make Monster Hunter what it is as a franchise.
Here's an unreasonably large amount of thoughts:
About the genre talk at the start, monhun actually is sometimes referred to as its own genre with a term that already exists, "hunting RPG". It was also special for an action game in that gen 1-4 had a rather more proactive style of combat as opposed to reactive, which gen 5 is more on the other side of. This doesn't make gen 5 worse or anything, but it is a bit less unique in that sense.
Also about the story section: It's a bit more varied than that. For example, in Rise, Magnamalo wasn't considered the cause of the Rampage to begin with, but was an issue alongside it. In GU, guild and village story are separate, as they were from gen1-4; Valstrax and Ahtal-Ka are completely separate issues, and both stories there are resolved upon taking them down.
And earlier, gen 3 for example did the "Flagship isn't the cause of the issue" route with Lagiacrus.
I do admittedly think the section on the world is a bit too psuedocanon, as the Equal Dragon Weapon and ancient war were just concepts that were never necessarily put into the series. Even Fatalis is arguably interpretable as rather just very territorial. Point being, it's debatable and very much up for interpretation, and as such is something I think people should be encouraged to find for themselves. An ancient civilization *did* exist and fall, but it doesn't necessarily mean that the world itself is entirely post apocalyptic. I wouldn't consider it such, and especially not in tone. For something so subtle and a video targeted at people without knowledge of the series, I'd say it's both a little stretching the bounds of the conversation and possibly giving people the wrong idea that this is all objective lore of the series, which is already somewhat widely proliferated misconception.
If you wanna read them, some random nitpicks and trivia:
-Longsword was actually the most popular weapon before Rise even, and probably for a good few games in a row. I guess it's just got a strong and adaptable move set with interesting combos, decent mobility, and decent speed.
-I think "starter weapon" is a bit of a misconception of SnS now, and to my knowledge even the devs had something to that degree. Granted, the combos aren't that tough, and as everyone says, you don't need to know how to Perfect Rush in order to use it. It's pretty versatile in general, but not exactly a specialist in anything imo.
-Gimmicks haven't just been a thing lately; Most of the main releases have some sort of game changing gimmick, whether it be underwater combat or the introduction of swimming.
I like the editing and style, as it's engaging and fits the script, but also doesn't constantly spam jokes so much that it's over the top.
Also, the Lao-Shan Lung's walk speed at 14:30 is way too fast. smh entire video ruined.

    • @ItsHawx
      @ItsHawx  Год назад +7

Thank you for the hyper detailed thoughts 😂
Also I tried making the Lao Shan Lung move slower at first but it looked way too awkward

I think monster hunter fits comfortably in the “post-post apocalypse” feeling. Civilization wise its definitely “rebuilding” compared to most of the ancient stuff. I could compare it to the horizon series. Personally i think fatalis works best as the walking apocalypse he was treated as in iceborne. His design is weirdly alien to monster hunter. Along with saafi jiiva as well. Im a normal fantasy dragon and that feels wrong works well for what is a couple of super powerfull end bosses.

    • @Marxeru
      @Marxeru Год назад +1

@@cuccoinferno1189 I guess "post post apocalypse" can work, that's a different type of setting than post apocalyptic.
However, the entire concept of Fatalis being otherworldly is something that can be seen as retroactively applied after Iceborne emphasized it.
Prior to gen 5, you'd rarely see people calling Fatalis otherworldly. It was a fantasy dragon in a game full of wyverns with a style based on "normal animals souped up". White Fatalis was always "godly", but normal Fatalis wasn't always seen that way to such a great degree. In a certain sense, it could be said to be more alien to *our* world than Monster Hunter's itself, due to not really sharing characteristics with animals from our world, but instead being a literal fantasy creature.
But that doesn't make that huge of a difference to this discussion imo, just about Fatalis conceptually.
FWIW, ,my interpretation on the legends around its armor and parts is that they're likely just legends sparked by peoples' fear and perceptions of Fatalis- Since we almost never see evidence proving the particularly outlandish things mentioned from it actually happen. A lot of weapon and armor pieces have descriptions that are heavily exaggerated, so that would line up. Sorry for the essay, I just had a lot of thoughts on Fatalis mythos lmao.

I did not play Wildhearts, but it looked like it had potential, but indeed one thing that drove me away from giving it a shot was how it looked almost soulless, focused too hard on trying to take from the Monster Hunter crowd but one thing devs often forget about this tactic is that you'll be fighting a very uphill battle if your target audience is a fanbase already dedicated to another game. People very seldom just swap from their established game, the attachment is too strong.
BUT people forget what came before Wildhearts by the same studio that I suspect may have been a step forward for Monster Hunter too, Toukiden. Toukiden was actually fantastic imo as a more casual and accessible hunting action game rather than emulating as close to a 1:1 ratio to Monster Hunter, it focused more on Story, characters, having its own unique identity and progression system while also reducing the downtime between hunts by shortening the preparation step and cutting to the hunting as quickly as possible. I loved playing it just as much because it wasn't Monster Hunter. But they also made large open maps and a "slinger/clutch claw" before Capcom with their connected large maps and the demon hand in Toukiden 2. I loved that game and I'm happy to see that Monster Hunter moved forward in Monster Hunter World in a similar fashion to what Toukiden 2 tried to do with the hunting action formula, in parts doing it better with the Monster Hunter style I love so much (even if in some parts it fell flat like body part tenderizing breaking the pacing of the hunt, though I think Safi'Jiiva handled it well).

I think it’s kinda unfair to call wildhearts soulless from looking at it and not trying to understand it. To start off Wildhearts isn’t a game to take away any fan base like MH and instead to coexist with it. The building system adds a new mechanic to fighting monsters and adds to the map. In fact I feel like freedom of building your camp and placing your contraption’s anywhere in future encounters adds immersion which gives it a unique take compared to world. The locales also gives the vertical height as good as mh rise.
The weapons both feels unique and satisfies the average mh player. The Kimeno’s although not as iconic as established monsters, feels unique because they look like animals corrupted by nature compared to mh where monsters adapt to nature. The designs are also pretty good my personal favorite being lavaback.
As for the details I really like is how you chop the parts of certain kimono like lavaback, he jumps repeatedly and rubs his severed tail in pain similar to how humans when we get injured or deathstalker (the ice wolf) when you cut the tail of he howls in pains for a short time.
Honestly I think the real issue of wildhearts was the frame rate issue at launch, the 70$ price, the endgame monsters to infuriating to fight, and needs more updates to flesh out. I feel like if the game took more time to cook and better organization, it would be better.

May be commenting at the start but after what you said there: I wonder the same thing! If it wasn't for finding RageGamingVideos a few years back, this game still would've been under the radar for me! Absolutely love this franchise and currently experiencing the older games. Just so much that it can't be put into words but the combat feels natural for the weapons next to how great the monster designs are. Even if some are irritating (looking at Bullfango and the smaller large monsters). Still remember the first time seeing Fatalis and then actually reaching it myself to then slaying it solo for the first time. Never will forget having 3 seconds left on the timer.
Edit: Seeing gameplay from Ghosts of the Deep really kicks the burnout barrel for Destiny.

Your point at the beginning describing what type of game it is to me is the most succinct way to explain the appeal of the game, at least for me. Imagine a game that’s ONLY cool boss fights. Like the game eschews all the minor mindless enemies you have to slog through, weird frustrating puzzles, unnecessary open worlds and was just like, nah, instead here’s 50-80+ fun boss fights. Fights that if they were in any other game, would be major highlights, but in Monster Hunter, that’s just the whole game. The whole game is standout boss battles back to back to back.

Happened randomly upon this video, and very glad I did! Really good summary of what makes this franchise so great. Been stuck here since the very first game on the PS2 and it's still got its hooks in me and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Couldn't be happier. :D
I do think the community views on the charge blade and the longsword are both a bit wacky, but it's all in good fun and memes at the end of the day. Though I would say that the ability to take zero damage with the longsword via counters does necessitate the player actually being good enough to counter everything, which definitely isn't the bulk of LS players I've seen.
Including me. Goddamn I do my best though. Fffffuckin uhhh,, hashtag,, cringefail LS main squad. I may only counter about a quarter of half of the attacks that get launched at me but it's pretty great when it happens.
Also I appreciate the mention of the "not-strictly-canon" lore with the Ancient Civilization. I know it's contentious stuff in the fanbase cuz of how many people are 100% purist with the lore, but personally I love the theories about the zany bullshit they got up to before Fatalis merked em. Especially a fan of how Frontier dabbled a bit deeper into those aspects of the lore. Though then that gets people arguing about if Frontier is or isn't canon and blehh, it's exhausting. Til Capcom fully commits to yes or no on things like the EDW I like to imagine them as potentially canon just because of how interesting the concept is.

Technically, I started in 4U, but I couldn't get past the firt Kecha Wacha in the Low Rank, whatever the Rank was called back then, and I just put the game down for a while. Then came Rise. I got it for the Christmas before last. I've sunk around 300 hours now. Including Sunbreak. Honestly, it was nice to have a game that starts out easier. I just did all the Village Rank Quests until I completed everything except for the Quest that unlocks after High Rank. It was nice, doing everything solo. It forced me to take my time and learn. And that shiz really paid off in High Rank and Master Rank. And I have a few good stories of where I got "into the zone" against a monster. What I mean by that is all that was in my head was seeing the death screen of the current monster I'm hunting. I don't feel anything other than the drive to see the death screen. I'm not angry, sad, happy, upset, or anything else except absolute focus. Every move I make is perfect for letting me continuously attack the monster, only getting hit by low-damage attacks that won't knock my character down, and perfectly rolling out of the hitbox of attacks that would. I am able to perfectly read the monster's movements, know exactly what attack it's about to go for, and I know the exact timing I need to perform my reaction. It becomes a dance. And I'm leading. Because after the monster makes its next major attack and I get out the way, I run back towards the monster, and swing ny Greatsword until I need to run again. But I don't think. I just do. My fingers know what directions I need to move the joysticks and what buttons I should press. Because I still do take damage. So I need to get out of there and heal. It's fu**ing amazing!

As much as a lot of people dislike Monster Hunter Rise, I appreciate and love Rise so much because it is the only Monster Hunter Game I got my irl friends play consistently to the point where we actually finished the game, including Sunbreak. It has been the most accessible monster hunter game specially for new comers to the series.
Plus it's like the reincarnation of my very first monster hunter game, MHP3rd. Amatsu is my favorite monster ever since I faced him in MHP3rd.
Some other stuff I noticed in MHR that I really like,
    1. It had a lot flagship monster reruns (e.g. Gore Magala, Seregios, Valstrax, etc.). It feels like a celebration of past monster hunter games ("Everyone is here" kind of moment), to be brought in the new generation.
    2. Had a very diversed monster line up. I think it almost had all monster types except Snake Wyverns? Which I desperately want but understand the limitation of what they can do for now since they weren't able to bring Lagiacrus back when in fact it was planned due to physics and collisions maybe. It would be much harder to implement a snake wyvern if Lagiacrus can't be implemented yet.
    3. MHR also confirmed Frontier being canon. To bring Espinas in the new gen means we can possibly get more Frontier Monsters which would be awesome! They didn't say that Frontier monsters couldn't come back but I did not expect them to actually do it. Who knows maybe we can get Origin and/or Zenith Species!
This is from what I experience playing the game for over 1000 hours, so you or others might feel different about it and it's ok.
I am excited for the next Mainline game since technically MHR was made by the Portable Team, while the Mainline Team is probably on going (or about to finish?) another Monster Hunter Game!
    Happy Hunting!

Y'know when I first bought World, I played for two hours and then dropped the game, that was in like 2017 and I didn't touch the game again until Iceborne came out... Little did I know Monster Hunter would become my favourite game series ever and I'd put 2000+ hours into it across World and Rise.
Even while writing this comment I just got done killing a Rathian and Rathalos in an event quest in Rise (on that layered armour grind).
Once the drip marketing starts for the next game my hype will know no bounds, I believe it's gonna be the best MH game yet. It's gonna take what made everyone love World and expand upon it. The way i see it is World was just a test for Capcom to see what they could do with the upgraded specs of a non-handheld console and in the next game they're gonna put what they've discovered to work.

Mh is the best rpg. You are a hunter and it is your decision you choose what role you would like to play within the hunt. Not only are there roles but with gear being you're main way of leveling up your character you have complete freedom to be creative and find ways to get passed channeling fights.... There's no sitting and killing boars over and over to level up but instead seeing an opportunity to hunt multiple different monsters to get pieces of equipment that will create a build that fits your own personal play style. Not to mention the fact that every weapon is characteristic to a fighting game with combos you can execute within windows of the monsters move set. It think the biggest reason why people don't get into monster hunter is because the discovery and execution of actually playing the game is the best part and with so many tiny details that create an massive picture mixed with the foreign aspects of the game just not "feeling" like any other game it's a lot to digest for new players.

world has sold 20million+ (if we counted the master edition which is world+ the DLC)
5th gen alone sold like 50+ million
    world 20 (around 21 or 22)+
    iceborne 10+
    rise 13+
    sunbreak 6 million
thats in 6 years only bruh from 2018 until 2023 AND SOMEHOW PEOPLE BARELY KNOW ABOUT MONSTER HUNTER
my friend once said: *maybe because the people who play monster hunter play basically monster hunter and only monster hunter, barely touching other games*
and i admit im basically only play MH and LoL barely touching other games lol

Plus if you go back to handheld MH era you can read up on how the MH devs were always denied a proper marketing campaign

I came into this with world. Came in a year late. As it looked like a cheesy Dino hunter hack and slash. I watched skill ups review a year after he dropped it and then I was like ok I’ll try it. Changed my life. Defiantly not a cheap Dino hack and slash. This game made me tear up the first time I played it. It was the dragon I’ve been chasing since forever.

You are kinda missing the point of the issue.
      1. Why did they ever think that would be an enjoyable thing to do? With how hard some endgame monsters hit you are REQUIRED to get the spiribirds to not get almost 1 shot.
      2. The skill that spawns spiribirds for you (I am assuming that is the one you mean, feel free to correct me) is AYBSSMALLY slow. By the time I get to the monster STILL may not have full health.
I DO NOT understand why eating doesn't max out your health like it did IN EVERY OTHER GAME. But allows you to max your health out via birds.
This isn't about "if you don't like it, don't do it"
Surviving in the endgame without max health is not fun. The spiribird skill, unless it got a major buff that I missed, will give you random buffs periodically so you cannot ensure to have max health first. Bad mechanics should be called out, not tolerated.

As someone who's never played Monhun before, here are my thoughts:
1:25 How have I not played any game of the franchise yet? Simple, I wasn't interested in RPG mechanics. Or beating up monsters in a fantasy setting, for that matter. I mostly play puzzle games, sometimes platformers, and rarely ever, action games.
2:37 Arguably, Dark Souls is a similar game. You don't need to care about engaging the weaker enemies, and if you're skilled enough, you can walk right past them, in order to get straight to the bosses. How much do you walk around in Monhun? And is there anything similar to the "outrunning enemies" part in Dark Souls compared to Monhun?
That said, the HP and stamina (?) bars do strongly remind me of Dark Souls. Maybe they're just a common game design element
Another honourable mention: Titan Souls. The bosses (called titans) are the only enemies to fight in the game, and they're really difficult. Chances are you'll be dying to them a lot.
8:43 Is that a good thing? Does complexity not raise the barrier of entry for a game? How easy is it to grasp the systems? I, for one, wouldn't have any fun at all trying to understand them; after all, I'm here for the action, not the menuing.
11:52 That's an interesting pitch, especially considering the real-life disregard of some people towards nature. I'm surprised that the ancient civilization didn't cause an ecological disaster, but maybe that just hits too close to home.
14:32 Does the player ever get to engage with those areas? Lore-wise, it would probably be a great opportunity.
19:08 Once again, is complexity a good thing? I have a feeling this many weapons could just lead to analysis paralysis. Then again, you don't get punished for choosing something you don't like, right?
19:49 No, this kind of mechanical variety is not unique to Monster Hunter at all. Any roguelike is built on the idea of giving you new tools and new opportunities to work and experiment with. Take Hades, for example, where while you only get six weapons to choose from, the game actively incentivizes exploring this variety by giving an item bonus for starting a run with a specific weapon. Usually this weapon will be one that you haven't used in a while. Furthermore, the wide variety of boons that you can get is enormous, and while not all combinations are useful, a lot of them can emergently create completely new styles of play that aren't even envisioned by the developers.
23:18 What I like about MH's monsters is that their behaviour isn't anthropocentric. Within the simulation that you get, obviously they'll only be there when you're close enough, because otherwise they would waste valuable RAM. But lore-wise, the monsters don't just serve as a barrier for you to overcome, they interact with each other and the game world too. For example, I've been told that you can get two monsters to start turf wars. And this capability for monsters to mechanically act independent from the player, I believe, is what sets Monster Hunter apart from a lot of games.
25:22 In the modern day, with the Games as a Service model and predatory monetization schemes, designing a game with engagement and fun in mind is always appreciated.

    • @ItsHawx
      @ItsHawx  Год назад +3

Monster Hunter does not have an open world akin to Dark Souls. You have a hub in which you do everything from tending to your farm, forging armor or eating food and the hunting areas. Those you access by choosing a quest/expedition. So you will most likely never have to run past anything as you have to in Dark Souls. Small monsters are there to (and this is just in my humble opinion) essentially fill the world with stuff so it feels more alive. None of the small monsters pose any significant threat on their own.
Side fact: Monster Hunter 1 actually came out before Dark Souls 1 :D
The complexity in the various systems can be a lot but it is not like you have to understand them all fully. That is what the community is for or you can even outright ignore some systems. Sharpness for example is essentially a system you can fully avoid thinking about past "oh shit my sharpness is at yellow, time to sharpen". Other more complex systems that you eventually will have to face such as food buffs and skills have been simplified in more recent games but as this was a franchise overview I just spoke about how it is in most games. Nowadays they are extremely easy to grasp unless you have issues understanding some terms but again you can just ask the community about those.
Oh yea the reverence for life in this universe is so interesting. One thing that comes to mind for me is the story of the Elder Dragon that lived in a bamboo forest with very strong and sturdy bamboo and can control its growth made a "deal" with villagers that lived nearby in which they are only allowed to take what they need and if they dared to take more the elder dragon would destroy them. They took more in the end.
Hmmm not that I recall. The Player is always a Hunter. Hunters are not needed in the safe areas. So we don't get to see them. But we can read about them in the lore or speech bubbles.
Complexity in the case of the weapons can make or break the game for you. For the people that like to stick around and just try some stuff out the complexity here is amazing. But for people that expect MH to be a game that allows you to just wail on a monster and have it be dead in a minute without understanding the movesets it will be the wall that they won't be able to overcome. So it is more about the player. Are you willing to sit down for a few quests, try out a weapon and its moves or not?
Also thank you for watching the video fully!

The best way to compare MH to Dark Souls is to say they took out most of the exploration aspect (including the small enemy encounters) and made the combat way better (especially for engaging against large enemies).

    • @Marxeru

      My own thoughts:
-About the ancient civilization, it's largely psuedocanon in a sense and very vague in the game's lore. Not something often referred to at all. The "lore" is usually mostly focused on the ecology of the monsters, and maybe just the situation around whatever village the game takes place in. "Humans get punished for exploiting nature" isn't a common theme in the series, and the stories are usually based on just trying to protect a home village or the ecosystem.
-The complexity is not that deep for a lot of systems. Sharpness just simply depletes as you hit enemies, and keeping sharpness high is better. Armor skills aren't that complicated, you just build toward skills that might be useful for your weapon. So it's not tough to get into, and armor skills also aren't that important until later. Furthermore, just building complete sets can give you decent skills geared toward a particular weapon, or general offensive/defensive skills. Mixing and matching armor sets to minmax skills is completely optional, and I think it's a strength of the series that any incentive to farm something is all decided by what the player wants to make, as opposed to a battle pass or something.

Had around 4000 to 5000 hours in World. Only thing that annoyed me in world was the deco grind. And it never got so bad that I dropped the game.
In Rise a LOT more annoyed me to the point where I dropped the game after Title Update 2 and returned to it a few months ago. From the unifinished state it released in, the lacking endgame back in vanilla rise, the lack of a good charm farm to sunbreak's entire anomaly system.
Having to hunt a monster for so long to get it to an absurd level requirement to even unlock a certain item is asinine.
Rise in my opinion is way worse than World, the most popular monster hunter game in the world mind you, ever could be.

@@ItsHawx100% true World > Rise. Not to mention the quality title updates, sieges, a collaboration with a monster in said collab (FF, The Witcher) Grinding is world is more rewarding since you farm the actual decos from different monsters that makes you wanna grind more rarher than craftable ones. More satisfying combat. Oh even the base world has more content than the base rise, better match making, and alot more to mention. It's subjective but pretty sure majority of playerbase agree that world is better than rise. Unless rise is the player's first MH game.

@@ItsHawx As someone who literally platinumed MH Rise/Sunbreak two days ago; I can say that while Rise in a completed state is better than World in my opinion, the reasons for this aren't technically the game's fault and with a few tweaks I might have played World all the way until Iceborne released instead of dropping it and then picking it back up later...
The first issue I had with World/Iceborne is how Offline play was handled... specifically; the lack of a Pause button, the amount of times I've had to abort a quest before of stuff outside of the game is a major factor in my original departure from MHW after 150 hours of playtime, by the time Iceborne was finished; I had over 1000 hours of playtime and if I'm honest it was only the last few monsters like Alatreon and Fatalis that actually forced me to become a more competent hunter, as World was the first MH game I actually put serious time into and I'd come to rely on SOS flares before that point (for reference, before World; I had fought Great Jaggi in the MH4U demo at school, and then I later rage quit to low rank Gyceros in MH Generations on the 3DS and didn't return until years later)
So with just ONE change, i.e. the ability to pause while playing offline; MHW changes for the better... I'd even go as far to say that I probably wouldn't have stopped playing World if it had a pause button
I definitely loved Iceborne more than World (I caught up to everyone else by the time Raging Brachydios was all the rage, no pun intended) probably because unlike in World, where I looked at Behemoth, Lunastra and the ATs with awe and fear (even if my HR was high enough, I wasn't game to fight them) in Iceborne; I saw the trailers for Alatreon, I saw this all powerful monster and I was super pumped to fight it and to my shock; my go-to strategy of relying on others for help disappeared instantly...
Because I wasn't the only one fighting this beast for the first time, EVERYONE was and so everyone was struggling to beat Alatreon, after 3 days of chipping away at it, I managed to slay the beast with help from another player... it was easily the toughest enemy I'd faced in ANY videogame, and yet; if that monster was brought to Sunbreak right now, I'd slaughter it in an instant, not before it's easy... but because I have faced the beast before, I know it's attacks and how to deal with them
I actually proved this fact a while ago... I did a second playthrough of World with the intent of recording Fatalis' intro... but I also had a grander idea, to slay the Black Dragon on my first try... I managed to do so, with underlevelled, unaugmented gear before I even reached MR 50, with 2 minutes remaining... I actually have the video on RUclips if you're interested
World is probably objectively a better MH game, and with a few tweaks I'd agree that World/Iceborne are the best of all time... but as someone who played Rise from the start (even waking up a few hours before I had to go to work to get my save file ready for the afternoon when I get home) from base Rise on the Switch, to playing it again on PC, to Sunbreak on PC and then more recently Sunbreak on the Switch; the games basically been my life for the last year of two, so I am a bit biased in saying that I think Rise is better than World...
simply put, I was there from the very start, seen it's ups and downs... and will be there until the next game is released, and when the next game is released; I'll repeat this process again!

@@ItsHawx In regards to the next game; there are also many things from Rise/Sunbreak that SHOULD be in the next game, namely:
-Switch Skills: We need them to return, it allows for weapons to be played in many different ways, for example; Hammer, Strength Hammer is the base style and perfect for raw damage, but swap to Courage Hammer and boom; it's an elemental powerhouse!
-Palamutes: I love dogs, and given how large the maps can get; having a fast mode of transport is a must
-Wall Running: No Wirebugs, but they could easily repurpose the Clutch Claw for grappling onto walls instead and have a character in-game say "Many hunters complained how cumbersome this tool is when used to actively attack a monster, so we modified it for use in exploration"
-Relic Records: Because it means more lore and more collectibles, and by extention; more reason to explore
-Followers: Because it means that if we return to the New World, we will get to see the Admiral fight a Rajang with his bare hands!
