Don't hand them any money until you look at the the books
Yeah I thought that would be obvious
Dude, if the books in the pic are not in the lot you walk
You're a good hearted person for believing the 3 most valuable books were all removed without the seller trying to turn more profit.
First look at everything then pay.....NEVER make deals before seeing anything...you keep this up and you are going to either get scammed or burned.....remember this
I had a guy do this to me with NES games. We agreed to a price and when we did the deal he was "in a hurry" so on the way home I noticed the 2 most expensive games were gone.
Sketchy...
This happens way too often. Bunch of scammers
you let him pressure u into not checking you played urself punk
@@whitedom2041 I actually did well with what was left. Made 4x what I paid. I needed inventory at the time and it is what it is.
*_Painted covers are always sought after._*
Of course the guy was nice, con artists are the sweetest people in the world. Bernie Madoff was the nicest guy on the planet
Good deal for $70, but those missing books really irks me.
I agree- and yes...
Yeah, suspect as hell. The dudes kids pulled the higher dollar stuff. If the guy opens with “double check these” “and my kids went through and got rid of moldy comics”? Why would they bother to do that. Let the buyer decide whether they want to throw something away or not after they purchase it. Still did ok.
James’ zoom filter on the book gave him Mr. Fantastic “Kirby hand” effects…
The GL 63 got here a day early on friday. It's awesome. Thanks again!
I've noticed a lot on ebay recently where someone will say they are selling a lot of between 25 to 75 comics. Will not name what you are getting, and will show like 100 or more in the picture with some that are very prominently displayed either on top of piles or taken out of the long box and propped up next to it. Seems super shady to me, like they are trying to sucker people into thinking they are getting something they really aren't.
Happens ALL the time
I would never even consider buying a lot like that. You know they are going to send the crap and you may get one or two good books if you are lucky.
Before my morning coffee I’d say there are red flags planted all around the guy’s explanations/excuses. After my morning coffee, I wouldn’t care so much. I think you still got a solid deal and shouldn’t overly doubt any of it. In this instance, let that dude live with himself and you have a cup of coffee and take care of your own. Enjoy your buy, which I myself think was a great one.
I think if it was a scam he'd probably be more stuborn about price. his starting price also just seems low for a scammer so I'd believe em. Communication could use work though heh
I lean toward someone getting there first - or they committed to the seller that they wanted those 3 books and nothing else - basically cherry picked it. I see collections like this sometimes, where there's dells, charltons and funny animals... and yet there are no Spideys, Bats, X-Men, Titans, not even silver Archie - and I ask myself... how did someone happen to collect all of these off-brand publishers and titles, and somehow not collect any of the Marvel and DC standards? You still got a very good deal, so no harm!
How is it a coincidence when only the best books are mysteriously missing? It’s a shame but it’s a fact of the market these days. At least you could’ve backed out.
He told him books were thrown out and let him look thru the box...its literally not a scam at that point
Such a common thing, did is shady for sure
👀😮Always check & reaffirm the collection before buying from the seller!!!-💥caveat emptor!🤙⚡️
Happens more often than not. The sellers have sold off the most valuable books, cherry picking their own sales and over time wind up with minor, low grade or non-keys. They later realize their mistake of not selling the block of books for a better price and now have to hook folks for the 50 cent books. I miss going to garage sales and just buying the whole lot for a few bucks.
Happens all the time. Keys are removed whenever I try to buy boxes. Can't trust anyone.
Funny thing is - I actually believe this guy! he was a stand up dude
Yeah that was a total bait and switch. You’ll know for sure if you see the comics again in a future sale. I just saw freedom fighters 2-8 two weeks ago but didn’t pick them up. Great video!
Enjoy your adventures 😊.
Personally, my immediate reaction to his story is "How old are your kids and WHY are they touching your comics books!!".... BS
*_Trippel your money? I think you'll find out that's x6 your money, so good deal._*
I just closed a deal on a collection I’m picking up Wednesday, and now I’m paranoid all the good stuff will be gone 😂
At least he was cool about it. I still would pull out if I got into a weird situation like that. I just personally don't do weird stuff, and I don't like sellers doing weird stuff. Like I've had eBay sellers cancel sales for "product not in stock", etc. Sorry, I don't want to do that business.
You still got a good deal for the box, but it stinks the sale was missing those key issues. Someone either got there before you, or he pulled them. Thus, the shady sale. If this happens again, either walk away, or offer less for the misrepresented sale. Therefore, you won't get shafted and at least come home with something.
That superman 40 cent issue is a Whitman variant.
The really sucks dude but looks like you made your money back and then some.
I would have refused to pay any money for the collection due to misrepresentation. If the guy took photos of the collection, then comics are missing, that is bait and switch.
$70 and you dig it = Win
Undecided, he did state up front about things that he said happened. However, he could have pulled a grift on you in the hopes that you would just go through with it. If his story was legit, I personally, would have walked away with no hard feelings. My gut would have told me that this deal was not as advertised.
Love your vids. Friendly advice. Just do a split screen the dissolve is a bit distracting. Thanks for your show.
Nice pick up. I think you’ll do just fine.
It happened to me.
I got over 50 to 80 WWE dvds and blue ray for $100 . There was missing 10 to 15 dvd I text him . He said sorry I didn't know if I want to sell them so I took some out , but the price same price,
Wow if the seller knew that deal was made between you and him he should've taken the responsibility to take those comics and stored them in safe keeping to prevent from anyone tampering with the comic collections.
It's a shame the books you mentioned that were missing you could have probably made at least about 600 to 700 hundred dollars depending on the conditions they were, still all in all the seller should have known better to responsibly taken good care of the collection before meeting up with you after the deal was made. It's messed up.
But have to say personally i think the Fantastic Four #244 is probably the best pickup out of all the collection, a cool cover too.
Nice review.
Yeah, the seller's vague "I think my kids might have been messing around with those comics" sounds too much like "my dog ate my homework." The obvious hardball response to that would've been "soooo then you'll be wanting to have a talk with your kids and retrieve missing comics A, B, C and D if you expect me to do the deal." But I expect the seller would've just said "get lost" at that point.
@@reprintranch "My dog ate my homework.", pretty much sums it up indeed. And to ask the seller to have his kids retrieve the missing comics, the seller definitely and probably will not do that, which says alot there. And if it were to be the case some will expect to honor that business deal.
intentional. but wanted clear conscience if you notice and thus, the price break.
I think this is exactly what happened.
Maybe the seller had second thoughts and blamed the kids. Or maybe just before James arrived, one of the kids piped up with something like, "but DAAAA-aaaad, you said I could have all the Spider-Man comics that're worth MUH-neeeeeeeee!!!" and dad caved.
Are you kidding? Never buy trash like this. Waste of time.
BEEN OUT THE BUSINESS FOR TWENTY YEARS SOLD TWO SHORT BOXES WENT TWO DEALERS STORE. WE PRICED OUT THE BOOKS ONE BOX CAME OUT AT 480 DOLLARS AND SECOND WAS 710 DOLLARS. SOLD THEM A 75 BUCKS EACH. HE GAVE ME AN EXTRA 25 IN TRADE. NOT ALL OF US RIPOFF DEALERS WHEN IT HAPPENS.
I've had folks try that a few times - I generally just walk. Worst was someone with a Batman Adventures full run for a decent (but not spectacular) price that of course was missing the 12 when I showed up. Time wasters all over the place!
Good pick-up, got your money back and them some. Don't believe his story though. The kid is old enough to know mold is bad on comics, but doesn't know what he removed and threw away...not buying that.
I go through every single book and go over the list one more time before I leave, box in hand. We also count funds right there. If they don't like it I will spend elsewhere.
He pointed out the fact that issues were or may be missing from what you saw in the pictures. He may have realized that certain books had more value than he thought and just removed them. If the missing books had damage then he should have just pointed them out to you and given them to you to decide if you still wanted them. If they actually threw them out then giving them to you free of charge would have been cool. Bait and switch, possible, but he lowered the price and you got some nice stuff. You still came out ahead.
My favorite part was when you said we are nervously waiting and your wife said: “I’m Chill”
I always check what i paid for. Seller has no right to touch ur purchase AFTER u paid them. I would friendly message the seller that u saw books missing and MAYBE they were left behind.
It could go either way, I would say. There were still some decent issues in the lot. He might also have had seller's remorse, but he would probably have taken out all of the Spider-Man in that case.
nice haul. I have a bunch of Batman and Detective issue"s in very good shape.
Trust is earned not bought. My first ever purchase on an auction website was a Batman 175. I was promised what was then called V.G. but got a very poor tattered copy. I never used the website again.
I've had a dude do this to me as well. We came to a compromise and settled for a lower price for the lot.
Great haul of comics!! Sorry you didn’t get the ones you were hoping for. Keep up the great work. 😎
I actually have the whole Jack of Hearts mini series, I'm not a grading expert though, but I'd hazard a guess they are probably higher end of mid grade. Possibly a little better than that.
Nice pick up!
Gotta stay firm on what you're getting. If you don't see it don't pick it up. I've made the same mistake- where people change the books you're on......
Luckily in this case I do believe it was a mistake
I'm watching the video, my first thought was he was giving you the switch. He still may have, but at least he dropped the price when it didn't include the books you thought you were getting.
I used to deal with this one guy and every time we did a trade or transaction, he would call or message me a couple of days later and say he 'forgot' one of the books that was 'part of the deal' . Of course the 3rd time he tried I was wise to it and called him on it. I didn't really care too much though because he always came over trying to get my Batman keys but I always sent him home with everything but. He thought he was going to hose me but I hosed him lol
Thanks for keeping a positive perspective….great books!
I'd love to buy those high grade Twilight Zone issues if possible.
solid haul and I love the running tally -- thanks for the fun show!
You got it man!
YOUR HANDS ARE HUGE!
🤣
Mr. Fantastic presentation mode lol.
Happened with me, purchased a lot of sports cards and the 1 rookie that made it worth it was missing.
If you feel that the guy's story is truthful, then fair enough but I hope he ripped into the kids as both you and the seller lost out. Dinosaurs and tanks: you can't go wrong with that combination in comics. Unless it's a cover featuring Superman in a play pen and a flying super-genius solving advanced equations on the blackboard (what were the creators thinking back then?). Epic Illustrated is a forgotten masterpiece: Chris Claremont and John Bolton's "Marada The She-Wolf", lots of Cholly and Flytrap by Arthur Suydam, John Byrne's never-completed "The Last Galactus Story" and so much more which will likely never be reprinted; finding all the issues is one of my comics quests. You could never get away with that Adventure Comics/Supergirl cover today. Overall, a solid purchase James with lots of variety and some especially nice covers on the Detective Comics and Weird Western Tales.
How did you find that sale? Facebook marketplace? Or another seller app?
Craigs
I picked up a copy of the Superboy on the moon, in a collection that I picked up.
How do you vet sellers? When I buy collections of older books it's not as odd. I am more alert when I have a mostly new modern collection with big money exclusives but such a low price. I get people give up on the hobby but if you ordered most online you are probably smart enough to sell on ebay. Most my collections have been word of mouth or from my craigslist add.
Story of my life my half don't care either lol, great video
It has happened to me, more on ebay. Pic shows great books and when they get here most of the run is in really bad shape. Great shoe as always. 👍
Sorry to hear that
Some of those Epics are good money. And look for issue #1 of Omni from 1979.
I'll keep an eye out!
Hey James! I don't have insta but I messaged your Facebook page about a potential sale! Great find.
Interesting, that the “kids” honed straight for the major ASM keys and made them disappear…those are some savy kids…
Smart kids!
Hmmm sketchy... well glad you ended up with some good books nonetheless 👍
You still got some nice books!
Oh indeed!
I just got a booster gold #1 for 50-70$ now I'm hunting for the first appearance of the characters in the Authority and creatures commandos
Sounds like a mix up between him and his son. Would have been nice to see the updated information, but you still made some money hopefully.
I believe so
Nice score, I would say you still did pretty good, almost 6x on your money!
Great books, thank you for sharing this.
The minute he said something about the kids I would have walked away.
The three best not included! BS shame!
I would guess that the kids threw them away. Or they saw the value in them and his them, but I don't think they would have done that. Either way, not a bad haul at all, James. I love those old Twilight Zone comics.
They sold the keys lol. Same has happened to me twice but 2nd time I took the time and renegotiated also
And like everyone else. I think those 3 missing books are now on EBay. But a fun collection nevertheless. But my cynicism comes years ago when I won a Mint Mighty Super Heroes Game for a good price and the seller cancelled the sale when he burned the game when he was frying eggs for breakfast. Yes I am not kidding you. I was not happy. Oh well.
your wife haha, "I'm chill"
That's an odd collection of books for sure. I saw a bunch of Whitman reprints. How do you guage the value of those books?
I think you're under estimating those whitman supermans
Maybe! I like to round down
I dont understand some random DC whitman non keys are valued in the mid 100s. I don't understand the value of whitmans. Go to category on key collectors and look up whimans. The prices for random books is odd
Do we call this the Citizen Kane or Lord of the Rings camera work? Either way - great. :D
Don’t buy beachfront property in Utah.
Lol
Bait and switch
Almost certainly bait-and-switch. I'm not sure if you picked this up via eBay, but this happens more often than it should on that site. When buying a lot, always inquire about any more valuable pictured items to make sure they are part of the sale. If the answer is no or if you don't get a response from the seller, then it is probably best to move on.
Master Jailer!!! Very cool!!!
Indeed!
Will these be on your Instagram for sale?
Personally, l think this guy knew what he was doing.
All that gash about mold and the children.. all just to confuse the unwary.
He gave the game away by asking you to check right off the bat.
Nonetheless, a decent enough deal done.
I always choose to believe people are good and honest. But it's a sliding scale that either proves true or slowly slides downwards based on experience with someone. I'm curious though. Would you drive out and do business with this fellow again based on this initial experience?
I don't buy it the best scam artist are the ones that make you think you are not being scamed
Call me crazy but I believe them.
I think you got the win!
It's ok you did good
I just got scammed out of 600 bucks because I saw a superman 1 on ebay for 600 bucks I got a Google image 😅 😳
Of course they took them
There are no accidents
He lied. Definitely
Those books in Europa are minimun double of your price haha
Yikes
@@MintHunterComics amazing to see gold key and harvey comics so low in price I pay 5 or 6 times those amounts in UK!
Freedom Fighters was a great pull.
Like gold key and Harvey books a lot.
