Show of the Weekend! Buckle up folks, because Ellen has some Things To Say about Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Plus a quiz on weird Greek myths, your comments, artwork and more. Enjoy!
It's funny because I'd heard a lot of initial complaints about Shadow of the Tomb Raider from people streaming it early on. Like Ellen said, Lara's constant monotone voice, The hub world not being very interesting, the combat really does nothing new, even Lara's character Model looking off.
Tell me where to find the Director's Cut of this episode with the extra 20 mins of Ellen ranting about Tomb Raider, the watered down version just isn't enough...
Poor Ellen, on a side note, can some question Jane what's happening? First nobody hear from James for weeks, now Ellen discovers that the new tomb raider will have DLC. After suffering with the game mechanics. It seems that something is behind all this.
Can we get the unedited multiple hour rant of everything Ellen likes and dislikes about Shadow Of The Tomb Raider please. It'll be the best quality content!
Lets make it into a movie and mini series and then maybe a comic ... first part entitled "Tomb Raider Ranting - The Movie" writen, directed, and staring Ellen Rose.
Kieran Pugh I’d love the uncut version of “What I don’t like about Shadow of the Tomb Raider” by Ellen Rose! It would definitely help cure my insomnia from watching every Show of the Weekend at midnight

I love the way u guys review games. Telling the people how it actualluy plays rather than a lot of other channels where the reviewer is more interested in showing off all the big words they learnt at uni.
"Normal" reviews are nearly useless. Ideally I use a combination of Oxbox/Oxtra and Zero Punctuation reviews - one are so easily excitable that any negatives they mention are large red flags, and Yahtzee doesn't like nearly anything, so even faint praise of part of a game is huge points in its favour.
I'm way late, I lose track of how many SOTW I have in my watch later list because I save them for when I'm feeling glum because they're just so wonderful, but I've had a decent past couple of weeks lately... Anyway, I LOVE how every time an Assassin's Creed game comes out there's something on this show that literally makes me fall out of my chair wrought with laughter. With Origins it was Andy's bird voice shouting at Bayek, and now with Odyssey it's Ellen Spartan kicking a bear and Mike proud dadding about it. I seriously couldn't breathe when I saw that kick... I thought I was going to die, and the thought of dying from laughing at something so awesome only made me laugh harder! I wonder if that's what it feels like to be Ellen... The bear rolled over and its plump little legs rolled up in the air! Right in answers to the hopes of that very specific thing! Absolutely amazing.
Ellen actually said she thought it was a good game just that certain aspects of it annoyed her. So on a scale of 0(hate it) to 10(KoA), I think it'd rate a 6 or 7?
I think Ellens review was brilliant since most of her critisism was aimed towards problems, that would have ruined any game, not just a Tomb Raider game. And since she said, that it wasn’t a bad game I’ll probably play it some day, but not before they have ironed out a lot of the bugs. So thanks Ellen, for a very useful review. I would love to hear all the rest of it.
I want an in-depth three-hour analysis by Ellen! I love how she analyses things and is able to see to good and the bad and her honesty is so lovely and I love video essays

I do have to agree with Ellen on quite a few things with regards to Shadow of the Tomb Raider. I still enjoyed it but Lara’s character was a little wanting. And yes, Luke will like that part.
*whispers* I wasn't serious, but most of my knowledge of Greek Mythology sticks cos of Percy Jackson, not the straight up books on Greek Mythology I read.
These are legitimately my favorite videos on YT. And Ellens laugh could make even the hardest human feel pure joy in their heart. Also Luke seems like the coolest dude.

23:23 Actually, according to the clip before this, the bear's face was on the opposite end from where Ellen kicked. In actuality, Ellen literally and figuratively kicked that bear's ass
Ellen's laughing could bring world peace. Top three reasons I watch Outside Xtra #1 Ellen's lovely laughter #2 the channel's humor #3 the gaming content All are awesome, but honesty is best. Love you people =)
you guys are having so much fun. i love SOTW in the morning, it's such a good start to the day! and i have emotional problems where I can't handle witnessing a whole lot of joy but you guys make it feel inclusive, not like "look how much fun WE'RE having!" its so nice. nice mates
Ellen is definitely one of my more trusted reviewers, but I just don't agree with all her criticisms of Shadow. I think a lot of those glitches and bugs will be ironed out (Horizon had many similar ones when it first dropped, let's not compare a game that's been patched to one that hasn't.) Story-wise, it wasn't as strong as Rise, but I liked that it was less explained. I hated how I was always 20 steps ahead of Lara in Rise and TR2013, so I was glad to actually be figuring things out at the same time as the characters this time. And finally, combat. I was not fussed on the combat in any of the games, so I was okay with them toning it back. Tomb Raider's strong point for me has always been the puzzles, and the puzzles in Shadow were some of my absolute favourites. The 'moment' you talked about was indeed spectacularly done and was brilliant storytelling, and there are admittedly some small gripes that I wish had been done better, but I still really enjoyed it. No accounting for taste though, I guess.
@@TheDubiousSalmon *spoilers* I believe the moment she was talking about was when Lara thought Jonah was dead and it turned her into a total badass. Like slowly walking out of the water while a bunch of people are shooting at her and then she kills all of them. Easily the coolest scene in the game.
@@TheDubiousSalmon She's referring to a point (LOOK AWAY FOR SPOILERS) where Lara falls asleep and dreams of her childhood. You play as young Lara around the mansion, climbing up things in a cool reflection of what she gets up to later. It's pretty great storytelling, I really loved it.
Yeah, Yahtzee was really critical of Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Apparently the final boss is of the 'giant creature walking slowly around the arena' variety, and despite SPOILER basically being a god, can just be killed with bullets.
I heard the real ending is . . . . . Basically Lara realizes she's the final boss and has to ritually sacrifice herself to win. Somehow she lives, but ya' know?
It's kinda funny that the shooting mechanics and the movement in Shadow of the Tomb Raider have been improved so much, yet it has far less combat than the last game. Also after playing the new Tomb Raider, AC Odyssey felt clunky af. In that way I need to compliment the fluidity of Tomb Raider. Well, actually even AC Unity felt more fluid...
@@ex.O It's a nice arcady greek RPG, based on the usual Animus situation and backstory. It does have assassinations and lots of Creed, but its not have too much in common with the past entries. I didn't enjoy Origins much and this builds heavily on the same formula. Mercenaries' Creed would be better ;-)
I was just thinking about the language NPC speak in most games, no matter where it is set they most likely be speaking perrfect english. Why almost no one is using the great idea that STALKER devs had and put in oryginal voice acting from that part of the would and a lector to read it (and optional subtitles). It souded great and made the imersion go out through the roof. Just a loose idea i just had and i don't even know how hard (or easy?) it would be to find native speaker voice actors for Tomb Raider.
That occurred to me, as well, while playing Rise of the Tomb Raider. Here we find an isolated yet thriving Byzantine community that's been hidden from the world for millennia, yet speaks perfect, unbroken English!
I’m so glad Ellen has dislikes about this game, because I am a long term Tomb Raider fan and I there are so many things I dislike about this game. I really dislike the storyline of this game annoys me as well. The storyline seems to be a lot of Lara realising the consequences of her actions but she doesn’t actually realise the consequences at all. It always seems to be about her. At the end!!! What the hell was that?!
I really enjoyed Shadow of TR, though I agree with all your complaints. All the way through the game I was thinking that I needed to go back and play the previous games as I don't remember Lara being so dull and lifeless. I did really enjoy the actual Tomb Raiding though and was very pleased there was less combat and more puzzling. It is a shame though that they fluffed their lines so much with the character progression in the final part of what could have been an incredible trilogy.
I wonder if maybe she has to do that artifact examination mini-game to finish that part? I got the impression, perhaps mistakenly, that it was part of game completion%? find the artifact then stare at it from every possible angle to figure out why it has a tiny dimple on the bottom(or something like that)?
I like the idea of the OxbOxtra crew as a family - Andy and Mike are the dads, Jane is the slightly weird, slightly murderous aunt, and Ellen and Luke are the kids! Cameramen James and John are like the quiet cousins, and Johnny Chiodini is the exasperated grandad who struggles to keep everyone from being too destructive, and DMs the family D&D game.
I want a fan art of the "they were roomates" vine mash up for Ellen's frustration with shadow of the tomb raider Ellen "And there were merchants!" *pans over to Luke* "omg there were merchants"
10:10 "I've waited a long, long time for this, my eight-legged friends..." 26:40 Ellen is well familiar with an essential principle of warfare: Know Thine Enemy.
Did you guys buy the boosts for your assassins creed road trip? I hear you can cut down the grind of travel with them. What edition of car did you drive? Standard, delux, special ultimate, special ultimate, or the iconic edition ?
I always love hearing Ellen’s laughter, I still need to finish Rise of the Tomb Raider. I’m playing Assassin’s Creed Origins now and getting ready for Odyssey. I’ll first play Kassandra, I prefer Evie to Jacob too Ancient Greece, I just love the film Clash of the Titans. The real Clash of the Titans with Harry Hamlin and Laurence Olivier. Burgess Meredith was in the film, half expected him to tell Perseus: “You’re gonna eat lightning and crap thunder.” Seems more appropriate to Perseus than Rocky Balboa 🤣. Medusa is in it? Now I’m more excited than I was when I discovered the headless horseman was in the town Sleepy Hollow for Assassin’s Creed Rogue, where’s Icky Crane when you need him?
Firing off arrows and wiggling the camera in frustration after finally finding the vendor...I can imagine the in-person Ellen ranting that went along with that.
I totally agree with Ellen on shadow of the tomb raider, I was really looking forward to it as it was supposed to be her becoming who we know I.e a cold blooded killer, however she became just this whiney person who just was meh. The combat isn't great it's nowhere near as good as it was in the previous game. Frankly I'm kinda disappointed and it's such a shame
This new tomb raider is indeed a very lacking game. And the npc's are quite anoying. I already said multiple times to the merchant to shut up in my livestreams XD
The new tomb raider is ok but the graphics kinda suck and the bugs, when i played lara was in the middle of a wall and i couldn't get out had to res tart Assassins creed is so good though I'd suggest being kassandra she is quirky
16:48 I think Ellen was glitching out from all the giggles... and it's building up into something awesome. I don't know what we wound up watching, but I'm glad we got it.
100% agree with your review Ellen, and would like to add that what would have been a QTE in previous games were now sludgy, rubbery, and terrible camera control. I'd love to listen to/watch the full run-down. Kassandra + Female Assassin ship crew + Evie as a Lieutenant = The most badass pirate hunters ever.
I recently finished Rise of the Tomb Raider and almost immediately started Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and I have to agree with quite a few of Ellen's points - the story, writing, challenges, combat & relics are nowhere near as good, the purchasing of certain items makes *_ZERO_* sense, but it is _beautiful_ with the cut-scenes being done in the game engine, so you carry on wearing & wielding the same weapons... but you really do notice that it Rhianna isn't on the team anymore, and the gameplay is clearly done by another team - it's good, but not as good as Rise, or as good as it should have been! Once I've finished it, I'll switch back to Assassin's Creed Origins, finish that before I get Assassin's Creed Odyssey to play - too many games, not enough time!!!
What I want in AC Odyssey is a realy minor detail but it always makes me happy. When you (inevitably) play as Kassandra, I hope that you can still encounter Alexios. I like when games do this when you have multiple options for your main characters. It would be nice if they didn't erase Alexios from existence when you choose to play as Kassandra.
Hearing Ellen explain all the frustrations she had with Shadow of the Tomb Raider was hilarious! I haven't played any of the recent "modern" TR games, and I'm pretty far removed from the franchise overall. But it's so strange to see all the shortcomings of Shadow. I mean, haven't they all been polished and well done so far? You just have to wonder what happened that made this one fall so short of the mark. The thing she mentioned about the story not making sense without having read all the collectible documents stood out as sounding the most egregious to me. ACO looks great though. I want to play it at some point but I haven't finished Origins yet. I actually don't think I'm very far at all lol. The map is so impressive. I'm still on the fence though because it looks like it's pretty similar to Origins. Another great Show of the Weekend, guys. The frustrations were my favorite part. :P
I want the full uncut version of Ellen's Tomb Raider rant! I couldn't stop nodding my head when she was going through her list of points. There were so many small greivances that add up to a frustrating experience. Also, I had the same weird bug with trying to 100% the game and having missing artifact collections despite the map areas telling me I had collected 100% of the collections!
We need a full video dedicated to Ellen talking about shadow of the tomb raider! I’ll book the day off work, buy some popcorn, and put the phone off the hook.
So Shadow of the Tomb Raider was like having your partner say they were going to make an amazing evening meal, they hyped it up so much, you believed the hype because last time their parents were round they cooked and it was an amazing meal! And then they cook the appetiser ahead of time and you try it, and it is amazing... then you finally get to the evening meal and they got lazy and just bought a take out... it was a really good take out... but it wasn't what you was promised or expected.
“I got an excuse to stay inside for a couple of days” That accurately depicts my struggle with the flu and how Super Mario Party helped me overcome it.
I also lost a load of gold buying that outfit, except I kept the boots so now I have no top and it’s slowly killing me inside. Ellen’s frustrated arrow firing is the most relatable thing I’ve seen all year
I've had one or two gaming related rants, but one I remember came from my younger brother flipping through the Palladium Compendium of Modern Weapons, a '90s era RPG supplement. He gets to the section on mortars and I am suddenly treated to a 30 minute rant on how real mortars work and how the stats are barely grenades and for that rate of fire you had to have the most incompetent team imaginable. (All three of my brothers were marines, this one happened to do mortars.)
I agree with Ellen. I've finished this game too, and there seemed to be a real lack of combat sections. Mostly you could stealth your way through them, and it got to the point where I'd bought abilities near the endgame and NEVER got to use them against anyone. Tons of exploration, tombs, crypts, etc. Not much fighting. Not nearly as satisfied with this as the previous two installments. Oh. And regarding Assassins Creed Oddessy.....Gotta wonder why one of the first things i heard mentioned about it (not here, on Jim Sterling's channel) was that you have to buy the XP boosts from the Ubisoft store or it's too grindy.
"I don't know what I want, but I know I'm not getting it." This just summed up my feelings about most parts of the new Star Wars films. And all of Solo. (And while I'm at it, even some of Return of the Jedi.)
I got Shadow of the Tomb Raider long before I saw this, because I saw that it was getting pretty good reviews, but when I played it I felt the exact same way as Ellen. Was tough to describe but there were so many little things that made it nowhere near as enjoyable as the last two, and I thought it was just me since the reviews seemed to be good, but nice to see it wasn’t just me. It has some great moments but it should’ve been like sooooo much better than it was. It’s scary how much I agree with all they said here

you guys are having so much fun. i love SOTW in the morning, it's such a good start to the day! and i have emotional problems where I can't handle witnessing a whole lot of joy but you guys make it feel inclusive, not like "look how much fun WE'RE having!" its so nice. nice mates
Ellen is definitely one of my more trusted reviewers, but I just don't agree with all her criticisms of Shadow.
I think a lot of those glitches and bugs will be ironed out (Horizon had many similar ones when it first dropped, let's not compare a game that's been patched to one that hasn't.)
Story-wise, it wasn't as strong as Rise, but I liked that it was less explained.
What, specifically, was the moment she was talking about?
I absolutely agree with you. I preferred the focus on exploration and less combat. This felt more like old TR. And yes, the bugs will be ironed out.
I'm having some old episodes going in the background while doing stuff and I got weirdly excited about the Jon reveal that happened years ago.
Yeah, Yahtzee was really critical of Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Apparently the final boss is of the 'giant creature walking slowly around the arena' variety, and despite
SPOILER
basically being a god, can just be killed with bullets.
I heard the real ending is

Basically Lara realizes she's the final boss and has to ritually sacrifice herself to win. Somehow she lives, but ya' know?
This is still my favorite Show of the Weekend. I watch this whenever I need to cheer myself up.
Is it Odyssey a real Assassin's Creed game? For what Mike says is a great game with the wrong title, do you agree?
@@ex.O It's a nice arcady greek RPG, based on the usual Animus situation and backstory. It does have assassinations and lots of Creed, but its not have too much in common with the past entries. I didn't enjoy Origins much and this builds heavily on the same formula. Mercenaries' Creed would be better ;-)
Oh look it's the best and race
Well, umm.... MEGA SPOILER HALERT!

Kassandra lives to be 2400 years old and sees both the Assassins and Templars as necessary evils.
@@AbysswalkerASMR "Mercenaries' Creed" That actually sounds cool, I'll maybe give it a try later on, ty bro :D
I love how Jane went in for a handshake when OxBox won and Ellen was having none of it. Never try and deny Ellen her hug
Me: (sees Ellen's Medusa impression, turns to stone, falls on like button)
Also me: What the heck just happened? Ellen, don't do that again!
XD
I love how they talk about Spider man killing people with a train and then go one to talking about Red Dead Redemption.
I love listening to Ellen vent about bad game design. She is super insightful, and really knows what they misstepped on.
Hey Ellen just wanted to congratulate you in 98%ing Shadow of the Tomb Raider! You know what they say, "98% is the new 100%" :D
No! Just no! XD
I wonder if maybe she has to do that artifact examination mini-game to finish that part? I got the impression, perhaps mistakenly, that it was part of game completion%? find the artifact then stare at it from every possible angle to figure out why it has a tiny dimple on the bottom(or something like that)?
The game is glitched. Some items won't register when being picked up. It's annoying when trying to 100% and Plat it on the PS4.
So you might get stuck because an item poofed when you interacted with it instead of getting picked up?
I like the idea of the OxbOxtra crew as a family - Andy and Mike are the dads, Jane is the slightly weird, slightly murderous aunt, and Ellen and Luke are the kids! Cameramen James and John are like the quiet cousins, and Johnny Chiodini is the exasperated grandad who struggles to keep everyone from being too destructive, and DMs the family D&D game.
Luke: We don't have to educate.
Yet you all educate us every time. You guys are totally web! Super web even
For some reason I love the image of Ellen in a bar, totally smashed, rambling about Tomb Raider to both everyone and no one
Just finished watching the Mario Party livestream, excellent timing!
I want a fan art of the "they were roomates" vine mash up for Ellen's frustration with shadow of the tomb raider
Ellen "And there were merchants!"
*pans over to Luke* "omg there were merchants"
Team OXtra lost showdown of the week AND Shadow of the Tomb Raider was a dissapointment. Bad week for Ellen huh.
10:10 "I've waited a long, long time for this, my eight-legged friends..."
26:40 Ellen is well familiar with an essential principle of warfare: Know Thine Enemy.
Did you guys buy the boosts for your assassins creed road trip? I hear you can cut down the grind of travel with them. What edition of car did you drive? Standard, delux, special ultimate, special ultimate, or the iconic edition ?
DeHavilland Mosquito PR.34A, 3600 miles at 300 mph between fill-ups and 425 mph if you really want it to, but not the easiest thing to park.
I now know the secrets of life. Ellen laughs and Lukes cries and all is right with the world. Loving it!
It's actually nice to see them talk about the flaws in a triple a game, sometimes I think they can be too nice 😂 MORE ANGRY ELLEN!
I always love hearing Ellen’s laughter, I still need to finish Rise of the Tomb Raider. I’m playing Assassin’s Creed Origins now and getting ready for Odyssey. I’ll first play Kassandra, I prefer Evie to Jacob too
Ancient Greece, I just love the film Clash of the Titans.
I still cant believe Oxbox won 😒
Whatever, I'm impartial
The fans chose the winner. :p
What combat are you talking about??
Fucking up the stealth is practicaly a 75 to 90% chance of death
Um, the combat was not that great in the previous games...
@@thecritigamer4321 I absolutely loved the combat in the previous games. That's probably the main thing I enjoyed about them.
Luke: Athena is basically the goddess of Etsy
Red from Overly Sarcastic Productions: * laughs knowingly and mockingly *
7 people Spider-Man killed for real you guys?
ME: Played Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Really Enjoyed It.
ELLEN: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ME: Runs away Screaming.
Give us the Ellen SOTTR rant video!
she has her own channel for stuff like that. :p
The capture footage of Ellen's frustration after finally finding the god damn merchant woman may be the most relatable content I have ever seen.
Wow guess I'm not buying tomb raider then. Was torn between tomb raider and assassin's creed, thanks Ellen
This new tomb raider is indeed a very lacking game. And the npc's are quite anoying. I already said multiple times to the merchant to shut up in my livestreams XD
The new tomb raider is ok but the graphics kinda suck and the bugs, when i played lara was in the middle of a wall and i couldn't get out had to res tart
Assassins creed is so good though I'd suggest being kassandra she is quirky
Ellen actually said she didn't regret playing it she just didn't feel like replaying it.
16:48 I think Ellen was glitching out from all the giggles... and it's building up into something awesome.
I don't know what we wound up watching, but I'm glad we got it.
Hearing "Camerman Jon" scared me. It really did. I'm so glad James is still on the team!
I love how Luke's first thought of what music is so legendary and would blow the mind of any Ancient Greek was: The Beastie Boys.
So, once again, "Ellen was right."
PROUD DAD MIKE BRAGGING ABOUT HIS DAUGHTER ELLEN SPARTAN KICKING A BEAR IS EVERYTHING I NEVER KNEW I NEEDED
When I opened the Mail app, I saw this : "Show of the Weekend: Ellen vs Shadow of the Tomb Raider and the Ass..." 😂😅
Ellen's laugh puts a smile on my face every time I hear it! Pure joy!!
“I got an excuse to stay inside for a couple of days”
That accurately depicts my struggle with the flu and how Super Mario Party helped me overcome it.
