Minffordd Level Crossing

- Ffestiniog Railway Double Fairlie Steam Loco No.10 "Merddin Emrys" in brown and Ffestiniog Railway Penrhyn Mainline Hunslet Steam Loco "Linda" in green both make a racket as they head for Minffordd station, having both just come from Boston Lodge Halt. This crossing in Quarry Lane (aptly named for being in sight of Minffordd Quarry) has four traffic light wig-wags. This is the only crossing with this type of light, other than Marshbrook LC and crossings on the Isle of Man. The one alarm stops after the lights have ceased flashing, and there are strange looking electrical boxes on the back of some of the Keep Crossing Clear signs (or should I say Cadwch Y Groesfan Yn Glir?). This crossing was updated to an AOCL in the mid 1980s, and it originally had gates which can be seen from the old gate posts. It looks like the crossing hasn't been updated since, judging by the faded signs. The STOP when lights show signs have no image of a wig-wag and instead say 'AUTOMATIC CONTROL', as well as the same in welsh. The crossing keeper's house is right next to the crossing and has a funny shape. In the background in the first shot is the Porthmadog Bypass, which cut the Ffestiniog Railway in two in 2011 whilst a new bridge was built carrying the railway over the bypass. This will be upgraded soon with tilted wig-wags and these lights will be gone. Hopefully I will get one of them and some signage according to one of the workers on the railway.
Type: AOCL
Route: Ffestiniog Railway
Location: Gwynedd, Wales, UK
Train 1: 0:40
Closure 2: 1:23
Train 2: 1:55 Авто/Мото
Absolutely stunning. Wow. Noisy for residents but GORGEOUS little crossover.
I was about to say "ok wheres the dumb diesel". Then i saw the steamie and was like "awwwww its a narrow gauge" looks so cool and cozy I guess: a little street with overgrowth, old silver-white-ish houses and a narrow gauge track
And the nice old wigwags
I love the sound of steam train
Awww such a cute little train 🚂⬛️🔴⬛️🟠⬛️🔴⬛️
Ideal house there for someone who has a passion for steam trains 😀😀😀
That train had more carriages than my daily commuter train to Manchester!
Yes, it's a stream train.
"Stream train", does it have Ninja and other TikTokkers in it?
Brilliant example of Ancient and Modern, thanks for sharing.
Congrats on almost 200K views! You are the best UK level crossing filmer on YT!
Nice footage . I love the steam whistle It sounds beautiful .
I worked on the railways in Britain for nearly fifty years , it was always a bone of contention open crossings like this . It's not so bad on a small line like this . But on a main line , we had far to many accidents from people chancing their arm and crossing in front of a train . As far as I remember there are about 200 left in use . Manly on lines that do not take a lot of traffic . But the plan is to get ride of all of them and have automatic barriers , so no stupid impatient drivers find them selves wrapped round the front of a loco. As far as people living close to barriers . They tell me they do not notice the noise , I suppose one gets used to it ! Crossings are dangerous, if abused. I have seen to many people with their body parts rearranged from been hit . So take it easy and do not get inpatient when the lights turn red in front of you . they are there for a reason and that is for you do go home at the end of the day !
It's a good thing the number of AOCLs has dropped indeed.
Very interesting warning lights type! Nice video with steam trains!
This place looks beautiful
Lovely video! Thanks for posting it!
Strange looking traffic lights for a level crossing.
+Chris Henniker The reason why these wig wag lights are reused from traffic lights for this crossing is because the road is too narrow for the normal wig wag lights to be used.
Yes, the yellow means get ready and the flashing red lights mean GO
gary63693 lol
@@sambee8982 good old narrow Welsh roads!
I didnt realise the Ffestiniog railway trains used that many carriages..last time I went on one was over 40 years ago..long overdue for a revisit, another to add to next years list..thanks for posting
I goes all the way Blaenau Ffestiniog now. They extend it from Tanygrisiau in 1982. I was 11 then, but I do remember it terminating there the year before because the extension wasn’t quite finished.
*It's fantastic: a STEAM train in 2015!!!!*
Look at the North Yorksire Moors Railway
What hell most be to live right next to that crossing with that loud noise. But stil it looks like cute little crossing
Steam Locomotive's blow horn are so sweet
What a nice harmony of tones that crossing makes
Finally someone who understands
Nice video. These lights are quite rare and old now. I also quite like the alarms.
This is very rare
I life in an big building. With 100+ flats in Germany. First i thought the fire alarm goes off. We have the exact same tone.
So very, very lovely this Video. The Train is so cute and amazing.😍😍💟💟
Thanks for sharing this is a really awesome video and something different, I love the horn, it sounds like it’s really pumped wooooooooooo!
Micky T whistle. Not a horn
That sound actually hurts my ears. I don't think I could live near this crossing for long.
As an American railroad lover, those crossing signals sound so weird, but actually most likely work better than our magnetic bell systems.
This video is full of awesome! I really enjoyed it. Love that ol steam whistle as well. The crossing here in America are so lame.
I like how the lights are horizontal like that
Me too
Wow the lights look like a traffic light! A steam loco went past great video I subscribed and liked nice video.
Delightful
Well done! Thank you. Whistle was too late as a warning. No time to react to such a late warning.
I heard both whistles before the crossing lights even activated.
It sounds like that level crossing has 2 E2S A100 alarms.
I feel sorry for the person who lives in that house😂
With all that noise?
George Brown you would only here that in the day not in the night
CyBeR ShOtZ fair enough, but still
Well it is a railway house. The crossing keeper used to live in it.
George Brown they will have triple glased glass
What cute little trains! I feel like I'm at DisneyWorld!
Great video, thanks for sharing.
Nice video! Plenty of noise from both.
That's a really nice steam train
Those trains look like toys.
this alarm has been stuck in my head for a while!
a year or so....
Same but I love it
That’s the most charming train I have ever seen that is not in a museum
THAT SOUNDS LIKE A FIRE ALARM GOING OFF 🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒🛎🛎🛎🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
At 0.5
Anyone else watching this feel as though they’ve stepped back in time?
Nice crossing
That's a rather cool crossing. Reminds me of some signals here in the US.
They have got to be some of the slimmest crossings lights ever
The crossing alarms must be a great irritation to people living next to the track. Charming choo-choo. I hope it survives.
It's not as though the railway wasn't there when they bought the houses.
Beautiful
I hear steam train horn, I was thinking there was going to be something like a railrunner with a speaker playing sound fx
Not just a brilliant crossing but a stunning view of the Welsh valley in the background
#turdboigang
The WigWags look like UK Mellor Traffic Light heads.
But when you look closely they are Forest City WigWags.
No they are Mellor lights
Them level crossing lights looks like traffic lights except there’s no green lights but two red lights flashing along with the yellow light
Nice video, very quaint and interesting location
Wow... Thats intresting!! I can see why they did it!!
Great Video
Fantastic video! Liked 👍👍👍
People: This is a nice quiet spot to buy a house
The crossing: You sure about that? *crossing alarm sounds*
The train: You thought that was noisy? How about this! *blows whistle*
Nice!
I wonder if they take old halogen traffic lights remove the green and put a red in and then re-program it to flash red rather than buying a crossing light?
That's exactly what they did.
Looks good
In my opinion these traffic lights do not comply with the traffic regulations because the "wig wag" lights are flashing alternately on a vertical axis. They should flash alternately left and right. The reasons for this are alternately flashing lights on a vertical plane tell drivers to slow down not stop. This is designed to cater for colour blind drivers, a large sector of the population.
The fact is that red flashing lights mean stop, although on motorways in the UK, they do flash horizontally with amber lights flashing vertically. Either way, red means stop anywhere.
Totally agree with you stop does mean, stop, anywhere. The reality is although UK roads are geared up for almost everybody including colour blind persons. Colour blind people cannot become railway locomotive drivers, pilots or other industries where colour vision is required. Problem in the example on the video is that colour blind people just do not see those lights as red they need additional clues to the meaning of the lights.
The crossing sign above the lights would make it obvious to anyone who has a driving license what the flashing lights mean.
That alarm is way more annoying than the trains!
Cause trains are not annoying at all
Cracking shot
Cheers
Better crossing than some big railways .....that siren noise is a bit inconsiderate for the locals . Ive been across that junction for over 30 years on and off ....they never used to have all that noise ...
Can confirm these are still here as of October 2022, looks like they never bothered replacing them with the tilted wigwags.
Nice video
Love the alarm it’s kind of dramatic
1:28 sounds like the train is screaming 😂😂😂
Great vid ❤💗💙💗❤
Nice video👍. I didn't knew steam engines still operates in UK.
They're all over the country
@@Nathan_A_RF
Usually only on private preservation lines.
Tut tut tut... 🚂
That's a cool 3 section level crossing
Steam train on time too i bet.. they were back then when the Brits could tell the time and get out of bed
I wonder why the Highway authority allowed that configuration of signal on the level crossing order, a narrow pattern wig wag would be preferable to a bouncing ball signal
Satters Because rules are different in Britain.
Jos Trains, I'm familiar with the rules, I work for Network Rail in Britiain !
YES, that is always what I think of when I’m watching level crossing videos as per usual when the amber light comes on and the red lights start flashing I turn my head sideways and it is like a bouncy ball
omg a steam train
Karla Rodriguez o3nmdmsm
That’s what I thought
sound s GREAT!!!
I would love to live there
Nice wigwags!
Love the train, loath the signal.
Kind of a cozy crossing
That’s more carriages than in the whole of Hull station, looks also to be in better condition too.
How bad is Hull :D
I see Welsh on the crossing signs. Welsh steam locomotives are very cool.
A lovely part of Wales, easy to get too
Those traffic lights are fun, aren't they? Would be nice to install some of those in a town centre and see what chaos occurs as people wait for the green light!!
Nice place. So silent. This house must been worth millions
Will you go back here and film in 2018?
Whenever it's upgraded
Rx
It's upgrade is to be 2020/2021 now
That train is barely taller than the trash can.
seems like the weirdest place to but a crossing and train track lol
cool!
Must be nice sleeping in that house when that alarm goes of 2 in the morning.
It's a tourist attraction - it doesn't operate at night.
That little train should give way to cars.....
It's a bit blind for both vehicles and trains due to stuff in the way, and reducing speed would slow train journey times down
Can you link me to more crossings like these?
I thought that the bells at an American railway crossing were loud. Our trains are required to blow their horn/whistle well in advance of a crossing, with two long blasts, one short blast, then one long blast as the train fouls the crossing, like the Morse code for the letter "Q."
Some crossings have something similar, but there is enough warning here
When someone goes there who can't hear or see is fucked up.
These level crossings added steam trains horn however it's loud
Cool
Imagine the noise for the neighbouring houses
those l/c alarms sound like fire alarms
This looks exactly like a traffic light with the red light on the bottom.
That's because they ARE just traffic lights. They just replaced the green light with a red one.
cooool
Charming love this,Would,nt mind being the owner of the House in Question.
0:45 hey it’s Mighty Mac from Thomas the tank Engine
It's a reference to him
