0:00 Intro 0:13 Another Level Crossing Lights Starts To Flash (No Alarm) 0:20 Barriers Start to Lower and make sound effects 0:26 A Boy Runs To The Level crossing into the tracks
It's a similar arrangement to Britannia bridge in Porthmadog, except that isn't a swing bridge. Many dock lines in places like Birkenhead had bridges that were shared by trains and road vehicles.
There are alarms for the swing bridge but they are only used if the swing bridge is in operation. This is because there isn't actually any point where pedestrians can cross the railway line on the bridge, and since the barriers are only blocking the road here, no alarms are needed. There are alarms at the other crossing with warning lights and the footpath crossing at the other end of the bridge (shown in the middle of the video).
It's weird indeed. It seems that a lot of these particular wigwags (Forest City Halogens) seem to have different flash phases. These wigwags are very old and probably date back at least 30 years or so. The old equipment on heritage railway crossings rarely gets touched. Looks cool though and I see what you mean by being 'messed up'. Certainly looks a bit.
I still wonder why there are siemens optic signals on those forest city backgrounds... IMO importing some econolite groovebacks wouldve been a better fit
This is the most unusual level crossing I have ever seen and I haven't even been on the Ribble Steam Railway so it is making me think about having a ride and seeing for myself. Well Done You for finding this.👍👍👍
Thanks! 😁 I don't think there's anything else like this in the UK. The swing bridge also operates occasionally but I'm not sure how often (obviously not when a trains due).
freebrickproductions Thanks. Yes, this is one weird and long crossing with some old barriers and wigwags. Some crossings in your country might even be longer with the tracks which cross over a junction or a highway / boulevard crossing.
Lol. A 6 track crossing here is the longest. And I like to think that this location is quite rare. You clearly have some more weird and wonderful railroad crossings =)
I was rewatching this video when I noticed something. The gate lights on the crossing at 0:25 appear to be American Lantern-style gate lights made by WRRS (or Western Cullen Hayes, depending on when they were installed, but WCH has never bothered to change the molds on the bases so they all say "WRRS" on them), which is rather odd, especially since Lantern gate lights here in the US tend to be rather rare!
Very cool interchange of traffic. The only thing that would ring my bell any louder is if it was also a drawbridge. And the Thomas face was a delight! 👍
Could have been a nice video but next time please find A good spot and stay put. The constant movement is sickening and annoying. We aren't interested in a close up of the signals and gates beyond a plain zoom in. That would have been a great catch otherwise.
Thanks for the comment. I did realise I should have stayed where I was after filming the video. I've learnt from this though and some more recent videos are better.
I have a question. If there was a train and a boat at the same time, would the train have to wait for the boat to pass or would the boat have to wait for the train to pass?
I'm not entirely sure to be honest. Since the trains follow a timetable and the boats don't, I would suggest the bridge operates in the gaps the train is at stations or either end of the line?
0:35 that must be the oldest automatic crossing lights left in the UK! 3:02 too bad that isn't the Dutch class 600 (their British-built version of the class 08!) 3:31 is that steam locos face for halloween trains? it looks like a repainted DOWT face!
Thanks for your comment. The wigwags aren't *that* old since this crossing was most likely installed in the 1980s. There are some crossings with older wigwags. The railway is private here so there was a range of diesel and steam locomotives. I just happened to see these two pass. And since it was Halloween, a face was hung from the front of the steam loco.
Great video of this unusual crossing. The sound the rather old barriers make remind me of the barriers which used to feature at many a multi-storey car park.
Thanks. The barriers here make reasonably loud motor noises when they lower and raise. There's lots of carparks which probably have old and noisy barriers like these. Maybe not as slow.
Oh yeah. I think they do these wigwags with LED Optic Designs. There's some at bascule bridges and fire stations but not many at level crossings as far as I'm aware: www.siemens.co.uk/traffic/pool/images/product_page_images/wig_wag_durham.jpg
It's interesting that the lights at the start aren't in sync. The right one showed red whilst the left one still showed amber. Also, what's the warning triangle painted on the road by the first set of lights say? Something about tracks?
The lights have individual flashing relays by the looks of it. I didn't notice that triangle actually and am not too sure. I will have a closer look and let you know soon.
Do ALL the gates in the UK go all the way across the road, here there is a gap on both sides, allowing "gate jumpers" to wiggle across (not recommended) .
Can I ask in what way is it rare to see a train crossing it? It's in use every week at least twice for the bitumen trains. When the steam railway runs it's used numerous times a day.
When I meant "very rare", I was talking about the level crossing and not the frequency of trains. The crossing runs over a swing bridge which is very rare to see in the UK.
Indeed. By the amount of dirt, rust, noise and the fact these don't have any skirts gives quite a clear impression these things are old and need replacing. The railway probably doesn't want to pay to install new ones. They still work fine to be honest.
What I mean by "rare" is of the location. I know trains cross here all the time. What I meant was that there isn't a level crossing and a swing bridge together, anywhere else in the UK.

Joe Thorpe The Ribble Steam Railway has 3 crossings: Lockside Road AOCL, Navigation Way Bridge TMOB and Maritime Way TMOB. There is also Strand Road TMOB which is only used rarely by freights using the private railway line. It's located at the end of the line. Yes. That crossing is called Lockside Road and its an un-barrier AOCL type crossing. I didn't have enough time to visit there unfortunately.
Since the road enters and exits on the same side of the railroad track, I propose that we call this a “level tangent” instead of a “level crossing”.
