Glanypwll Level Crossing

- Ffestiniog Railway Double Fairlie Steam Loco No.10 "Merddin Emrys" in brown heads to Tanygrisiau before Ffestiniog Railway Penrhyn Mainline Hunslet Steam Loco "Linda" in green creates wonderful echoes in the mountainous and slate filled landscape as it heads into Blaenau Ffestiniog. This crossing was very old, as can be shown by the peeling paint on the lights, and the completely faded signs and St Andrew's crosses. The lights go out after the amber light and one red light shows for longer than the other when they flash. On one side, the lights flash oppositely. Three of the lights are attached to the pole by a strange right angled piece. There is also two tracks on the crossing, as when the line was built back here in the 1980s, it was planned to have another track to Blaenau Ffestiniog station. However, only one track is in use now and the other is concreted into the road, not connected at either side to other track, and is gated off strangely. The bridges leading to the station were built with two portals; one for each track. Again, only one portal is used. This crossing is named Glanypwll after the district inside Blaenau Ffestiniog, and there is also a small depot here, the entrance of which is through the iconic railway white with red circle gate on one side. As of April 2016, the crossing now has Unipart Rail LEDs and an extra set has been added on one side, which can be seen in my newer video of this crossing. Bloody upgrades.

Those are Forest City Wig-Wags these are! There's still a few in use, like at that narrow swing bridge on the outskirts of Beverly I saw on my journey to Hornsea, when a wrong turning got taken.
I remember travelling on this route, I always heard level crossings, I always used to hear weird sirens and I always got worried. That was in 2011.
The approaching train "2" can be heard at 1:15, so long before the signals trigger, at 1:34, and in addition vapour coming out of the steam locomotive can be seen at 1:28, when it whistles. In fact, those who dare to ignore the red lights when flashing are risking their lives, as the level crossing has no gates.

They've been replaced with LEDs now, about 2 months after I filmed this.

I believe someone living in the house on the right would have looked out the window and see that train passing through the level crossing and his house
it seems that the open crossing cross is fading away
I'd like to see a video of it with the new LED lights

Come back again after December 19th, when we will have rebuilt this crossing completely. What is here goes out of service just over a week from today.
+John Savage Will it be replaced with equipment like on the WHR? Do you work at the F&WHR?
+Nathan A RF It's being replaced with as-near-as-we-can equipment to NR standards, same as we did with Pont Croesor A & B in June. The wigwags will be replaced with Dorman LED units, and an additional one added to better protect the approaches from Glanypwll Road and North Western Road. There'll be no change to the PW layout. I'm an F&WHR volunteer, and a new works S&T Tester-in-charge by trade.
***** I might come back next year! Also, do you know about Stwlan Dam and Quarry Lane? Will they be upgraded too? And I have always wondered whether the second track across the crossing here will ever be used. Will it?
+Nathan A RF Quarry Lane is next on the to-do list, with Stwlan Road a little way behind. Glanypwll will probably never use the second track, but if the option of putting it in in 1980 hadn't been taken, then it would have been lost, and at least this way it remains should it ever be needed (which is unlikely unless the oft-mooted branch to Llechwedd ever materialises)

Has the FR had any incidents on any of its crossings? I've not heard of any myself.

Weird how the amber light turns on then off, a few seconds later the red lights come on.
Can someone please tell me how to read "Glanypwll" and some other words like the "Stwlan dam" correctly? Im really struggling with these words.
The sounds are different in Welsh for certain letters. For example the w is an "oo" and the ll is a kinda "thl" sound with the tongue.
