Peter was a great guitarist and his solos were awesome, but I've always preferred Mikael's more emotional solo style. Fredrik is an unbeliever player though and in my opinion not only expanded the capabilities of the band but improved Mikael's playing, by his own admission
Improved akerfeldts writing too. In terms of writing material that really builds up and frames the solos well. Songs now have spots where a solo was thought of for a given spot. Sometimes in the older songs it felt like they were fitting solos in. Now it feels like mikael writes parts where he knows Frederick or himself can throw great solos in. Haxprocess, burden, heir apparent, and something like lovelorn crime come to mind.
@@tylerjacobson8012 This is slightly off topic, but I believe as a whole Mikael has worked to make every element of every song more interesting overall. In this interview he talks about how some parts are more boring compared to other parts and he's excited about the solo sections. If you listen to the entire Opeth discography the music gets leaner and leaner on the functionality of each part, and each instrumentation of each part. The most recent release "In Cauda Venenum" is so dense with interesting bits everywhere at every level you can tell they've raised each other to new standards and abilities.
I like Peter and I prefer the Ghost Reveries lineup rather than the current one. But how was Peter's departure a '' HUGE '' blow to Opeth? First of all, Fredrik is one of the best swedish guitarists out there ( definitely better from Peter, probably better from Mikael too). Also, Peter had nothing to do with writing the songs, it was all Mikael. Now, Fredrik on the other hand, has contributed to all of the 3 albums he was in with Opeth (also wrote the song Pyre, of Heritage). He also does backing vocals. Apart from the feelings and the relationship between them, I don't see any blow at all, and definitely not huge.
HarryKnight There's no need to play Peter down as a member of Opeth just to try and demonstrate that they are fine and dandy and better off. Ofcourse it was a huge blow to Opeth and a huge blow to Mikael personally. All of them, Peter, Martin Lopez and even Per. It always is in these things, unless you make absolutely no bonds in a band. But specially Peter because he had been there almost forever. He was very much Mikael's close companion and very much a leader himself and a guide not only to career decisions but to creative paths. This Mikael has said. And Peter was involved in making and editing the songs just as much as the Martins. He was just never the creative or writing source for them, hardly anyone else has ever been but for Mikael. No one is pejoratively comparing Peter to his successor or saying that Opeth is worse now without him or worse BECAUSE he left. So maybe your reply was a tad unrealistic and unfair.
Definitely not. And if you watch Mikael's interview about Peter's departure again, he just says that he is '' a leader type of guy'', that's why he wanted to write songs, not that he DID actually write, because they weren't good enough for Mikael. Again, get your facts straight, Peter leaving may have been a blow to the band members, bond and all , but nevertheless they are still AS GOOD if not better (as I explained in my last reply). Also, they seem to have bonded with Martin as much. As I said before, I prefer the Ghost Reveries lineup, but your opinion doesnt make sense to me.
Sometimes I get the feeling that just by looking at the front cover of Opeth's albums somehow sets the tone of how the albums going to feel and sound. And I'm hearing a lot of people not really liking the Watershed album. I could care less. I think it was an awesome album! IMO, the album cover depicts a man all alone in a dark room, and maybe perhaps reading or plotting something. Maybe a lot of things are going in his mind, hence the way sound in the album. You never know what happens next
@Cheximus Search "Nardwuar vs. Opeth" on RUclips. The infamous interview is so bizarre that it touches Akerfeldt's dry humor. I hadn't known that he had teeth till then.
@celticwarrior222 Not in my opinion. Lopez had a very unique style, and a lot more feeling going on in his playing. Learning how to transmit something nice on a non tonal instrument like drums is something that not everyone can do, SPECIALLY when you talk about the metal scene. He's totally loose, and I even think that Axe would be better for the oldest and most brutal Opeth, and Lopez would fit a lot better in the new stuff, which have a lot more shades and stages.
I discovered them in 2000 and the first songs I heard were Benighted and To Bid You Farewell. I was 16 at the time too. Morningrise is still my favorite album but I love them all from Orchid to Watershed. The stuff since the change; not so much heh.
When all is said and done "Deliverance" really is Opeth's crowning glory (eclipsing even the mighty "Blackwater Park" and that is really saying something)
Ah, Peter, we miss you. Frederik is amazing, but I really loved the "feel" of your solos. Brilliant stuff, and the perfect compliment to Mikael's solo work.
As much as I love Deliverance I still personally find Still Life to be my favorite, just my opinion, although "By the Pain I See In Others" will still be one of my favorite Opeth songs.
Bro... my first PRS arrived yesterday, is a Paul Allender Signature and i really know now that PRS is amazing on Sustain... AMAZING!!! I tottaly agree with you!!!
Fredrik is indeed an awesome guitarist and I'm not going to speculate as to who is better between he and Peter but there is absolutely no denying that Opeth changed dramatically upon Fredrik's arrival either for better or worse and, in my humble opinion, as I haven't enjoyed their last few albums much at all, I'd argue for the worse.
Still Peter was the metalhead of the two. When he left Mike had free road to turn Opeth into a prog rock band as always he wanted to, but the other guys had a bit of opinion and liked the style they were doing.
Travis, how did you not enjoy Watershed? I think that's a masterpiece. But I agree with you, Heritage was a disaster and Sorceress sucked because of the production/mixing. Pale Communion was a good album but it's still not "Opeth". I wish they would go back to the Ghost Reveries days, with clean production, heavy riffs with growling and clean vocals. Hell, I would even be glad if they made a Watershed v2. Oh and by the way, it seems that Mikaels vocals have recovered quite well if you watch them playing at Monsters of Rock in Helsinki 2016.
even orchid has progressive, and me repliyng doesn't prove anything. I don't know what do you want by triying to make me look pissed. I know I won't change anything, but I don't care about that, I just wanted to see how you answered or if another heritage lover replied me. only to know what you (likers) think. I think the one offended here was you because I made my comment directly on yours, but of course i would do that, since I was able to notice it because is on the top.
it depends... in early opeth ( orchid and morningrise ) all the songs were composed by mikael and peter as duet, from my arms your hearse forward well yes, opeth is basically mikael, and i agree with you that heritage is an amazing album, its all about opening the mind and the ears!
Like they say. Music and life is changing each and every moment in life. I just hoped Heritage was more inspirational to me but I still dig it and consider Opeth one of my favorite bands of all time. Oh and Mikael is one my favorite song writers along with the infamous Dave Mustaine and of course Chuck Schuldiner, may he rest in peace.
It does my head in seeing/hearing people arguing about past members Vs. current members. Peter and Lopez left so now they have Freddy and Ax. It's just one of those things; you can't change it so arguing over it is totally irrelevant. While Mikael remains at the bands core they will always be one of the best bands in the world.
I can play that ;D Took a month to learn since I'm not a very good player, but I got it down. I get chills every time I hit the bending 17 on the high E.
watershed was amazing and brilliant. noone can say that the bassoon wasnt the coolest thing ever for a metal song. As long as its new, fresh, exciting, wonderful, im happy with it full on. Who cares if its not the same as previous albums, they shouldnt be the same, things need to grow and evolve and this was such an interesting step in the right direction. Heir apparent and Hessian peel my all time favourites by far
Nothing about Opeth's music is generic, even Heritage or Damnation. And I don't get this thing about Opeth being creepy and brutal. I've been a fan since My Arms Your Hearse, but none of their stuff sounds creepy or even brutal.
For a long time I believed that Ghost Reveries could never be beat, but when I seriously listened to Watershed i was mind blown. Every single song is a god damn masterpiece, like in an orchestra. Tied for number 1, if not the best Opeth Album.
love how lame people can be. no matter if ray j is a douche or not, people can make noise in vegas while being on camera drinking..jesus. so easy to tell the people who grow up behind a screen
@Benteiron I really wouldn't know. It's not like I know him or anything. That he's an IT consultant is just on Wikipedia, lol. In the Magicka credits though, it says someone named "Peter Lindgren" did programming. Now, I wouldn't call someone who does programming an "IT consultant". But that could be just me. To make a long story short: I don't know, but I don't really think so.
opeth is clearly opeth. but to my opinion one of the best bands ever reason: its not death metal... but not heavy metal aswell..it simply doesn't fit in the genres like Avenged sevenfold, acdc,Black Sebeth,Dragonforce,COF,Disturbed,Lethivian or what ever... Welcome to Forest MEtal...
I seem to recall him saying in an interview that the recording process of Deliverance and Damnation was a very bad experience for him. His grandmother also died around this time, so I doubt that helped.
Hi. I don't know if you still would like your question answered after seven years, but here goes: The song is called Wreath. It's the first song on the Deliverance album. I agree with you. The solo is truly amazing :). Here's a link to the solo part of the song: ruclips.net/video/S-NSvnolVQo/видео.html
I loved Still Life, My Arms Your Hearse, and Blackwater Park, but I've heard them. I don't want Opeth to make another record they've already done, that's not Opeth. I know Heritage isn't very metal like all the other albums except damnation, but that's what Mikael's grooving to right now. Can't say I didn't see it coming either, metal has always been only a small part of their influence, but up to now a big part of their sound. Their sound is more about what the band listens to now
Okay. Fuck Mendez bro. Akesson brings new life to Opeth along with Axe. But bro come on. You can't say Still Life and My Arms Your Hearse wasn't the greatest albums ever. Still Life is a fucking masterpiece. Lindgrens solo's and leads were melodic and beautiful. Blackwater Park was also sick but dude Heritage is weak. I would of least of got some input from other members before making a decision like he made.
Peter was also lazy. Check out the album documentaries, I guess it must be the watershed one, he rarely wrote anything, and what he did write Mikael didn't like. There were times he would rather go out and party than record parts for albums. All in all Frederick is adding something new to the band, and working hard into the bargain. On a side note Mendez is awesome; don't diss him on my watch!
Opeth is Mikael. He should of done what Chuck Shuldiner did with Death. Keep Opeth to something their fans love and not just change on them willy nilly on them like he did. Watershed was awesome but Heritage is pretty weak. It's got some decent tracks but most of it is garbage to be honest. How do you do 80-90% progressive death metal and then do something like he's done? I appreciate everything Mikael has done and love the dude as a songwriter. But he fucked up a bit
I don't understand the argument the "Axe is more technical the Lopez". Does having a more aggressive, death metal style make you more technical? Lopez's compositions were scores more complex and "technical" that anything Axe has done. The word "technical" usually describes complexity, Axe's style is FAR more straight forward than Axe. Axe is the man, I love his drumming, but Lopez was definitely more "technical" as everyone likes to say.
It's not arrogance brother. He changed the complete direction because of his bassist said something. Not Mikael. Look it up. To me, Mendez isn't that great of a bassist man. Lopez as a drummer was awesome for Opeth but Axe is pretty legit too. As for Peter goes, he was a way better fit in Opeth. He was so freaking awesome!
@BenjaminProd Dude, I've read read everything to do with Heritage, and watched all interviews. Mikael also STATED HIMSELF that you never know, the next album could have growls, and it might not. He just didn't find it right for what Heritage was. There wont be another Heritage style record, Storm Corrosion is the last in the saga, including Grace For Drowning.
@TukiOpeth Ha! you're just ignorant, and you want to hear the same things over and over again. You think Opeth is something it is not. Opeth is Mikael, and he does what he wants, and what he does is great. Watershed and Heritage are amazing and very fitting. It's all just you and your mind. Martin has moved on...so has Peter, and they want nothing to do with Opeth anymore.
@Psychiatric91 I gotta agree there. I've loved Opeth ever since I got Blackwater Park, and if you compare the stuff on that or Still Life, Watershed does sound a bit weak. I don't think it was anything to do with the lineup because Ghost Reveries is still pretty good. Watershed does lack 'something' whatever that is...
@izzyalistair It changes because of musical differences, or previous commitments presenting themselves, but it Lopez case, he was just very sick. As for a good writer, find someone who can write what they feel, not just some douche buying signature guitars pretending to be somebody else.
I was almost disappointed with axe (never disappointed with fredrick), I guess, until I heard Heritage. Now it's obvious he's just as good as Lopez. I don't know how many of you are drummers, but there are concepts I've heard Axe use that Lopez never even tried.
Your just a fan boy bro. Sorry to tell you that. Plain and simple. Your arrogant by saying you like all the same. You don't have preference or taste. You obviously do have one that you like better than another one but refuse to choose. It's on you man Peace
@Alejandro4891 Lol, grow up dude, Damnation had no growls. This is just one album, Heritage, and it's great, don't be so damn butt hurt, the only reason is because Mikael didn't feel they fit on Heritage.
hmmm, Åkerfelt said "we are a deathmetal band". Sure I really agree. 100%. But for me, they are still a very progressive band. So, Proggressive Death Metal? :) (Reply and discuss what you think)
@topdog2328 he plays with his wrist sticking out which means proper feel and vibrato is hard. Plus he's playing electric guitar most of the time, why would he need to play it classically
@BenjaminProd Dude, when Opeth first started Mikael didn't have a drum machine to demo songs with, so Axe doesn't have much freedom when Mikael starts doing the drums in a program.
@purplewalnut89 i have that exact same problem dude!!! like, what the fuck goes on with axe's fills??? he has a touch that i can't match, it's like imitating bonham, you don't
@Daaaniellaaa Did he take part in the making of Magicka? There is a graveyard in that game where on the tombstones are the names of the makers, and on one of them reads "Peter Lindgren"...
@celticwarrior222 what??? listen to axe's double bass live,,, and listen to masters aprentise live with lopez,, axe is not going to do what lopes did in opeth
Mikael is probably still one of my favorite songwriters of all time. Easily top 5 in my book. And he can play the shit out his guitar. I just miss Lindgren so much. Hey what's your favorite album by Opeth? Mine is Still Life. My favorite song off Watershed is Hex Omega with Heir Apparent behind. I almost died listening to Hex Omega in my friend's car literally. Thank god for my friend in the back seat saying tree!
I know what prog. means but I said "this was supposed to be metal" but yeah indulge yourself little genius, make yourself happy thinking you "0wnz" me because I am not gonna argue about progresive metal, because if we are here its implied we do know. I never questioned whether or not you know it.
I love Heritage, but I hope that Opeth goes back to do a few more death metal tracks every now and then. There's not a single song that Opeth has created that is not absolute brilliance, and that definitely includes Heritage.
hahahaha i do listened to those bands for like 4 years mattey... and then again.. Opeth Progressive or not...it still stays Forest Metal. Wich is True. So no doubt on that one.
@DennChooch Ah, well that's where you fail in judgement of character. Megadeth always has and always will be one of my favorite bands, just because I was introduced to them as a child by my father, so I think the name Megadedly is quite fitting and creative. As for my profile, it hasn't been updated in some time. As for your profile, it's beyond the pale, so you seem rather unqualified to make any such judgement of character.
Lol, I know Orchid is progressive. Pretty well every Opeth song has a progressive structure. I don't care if you hate Heritage and Watershed. I would definitely recommend realizing these albums are as Opeth as anything else they've done and they're amazing. Have fun trolling for responses.
@@tylerjacobson8012 This is slightly off topic, but I believe as a whole Mikael has worked to make every element of every song more interesting overall.

mikes vibrato is so good
Unreal to this day
Yes ❤
I believe Mikael has to be one of the greatest musicians today. He is just a complete genius in every way.
The solo from Master's Apprentice is probably my favorite.
Beautiful guitar work also shows you don’t have to be crazy fast to be amazing
peter's solo on wreath is so amazing
opeths gold era i love theyre solos

mikael has so many tasty solos, not only on this record! I prefer mike's solo over peter's,which i find very boring
Mikes solos are definitely awesome but I've always enjoyed peters solos just as much.

It's on you man
Peace
@Alejandro4891 Lol, grow up dude, Damnation had no growls. This is just one album, Heritage, and it's great, don't be so damn butt hurt, the only reason is because Mikael didn't feel they fit on Heritage.
hmmm, Åkerfelt said "we are a deathmetal band". Sure I really agree. 100%. But for me, they are still a very progressive band. So, Proggressive Death Metal? :)
(Reply and discuss what you think)
Watershed is by far and away their worst. In every aspect except perhaps instrument performances. Or at least, it was, until Heritage was released.
@BenjaminProd I'm not disappointed either, but Mikael did state on Opeth's Facebook page that Storm Corrosion is the last of the Heritage direction.
What the fuck, Opeth has been doing what Mikael loves, and writing what HE wants to hear, whether or not his fans are arrogant is not up to him.
This is real Opeth, with Mikael and Peter playing exotic solos on USA PRS's. Rather than playing some 70's shit on gay 'signature' SE models.
To me Wreath is the only Opeth song I get tired of. By about 11 minutes I just want it to end. Even Black Rose Immortal doesn't do that to me.
@BenjaminProd No dude, Watershed and Heritage were demo'd completely by Mikael before recording, even the drums, all in Pro Tools.
@TukiOpeth I first loved orchid and morningrise, but they have done better albums since then and got better musicians
Well it seems it's just a harmonic, and the only clear harmonics you can get up high on the frets is 12 and 17 :P
as a BOTH :P OPETH itself is BETTER !!!! doesnt matter who is the DRUMMER or GUITARIST !!!! OPETH forever :)
Not to piss the old school opeth fans but I love Peter mikael and the new guys guitar solos equally
Yeah but Mikael also said it was watered down and he didn't quite feel it in his heart.
Refreshing style of lead playing.
slantyrock Mikael definitely has always had a tasteful style
Michael looks a lot skinnier these days than he was in this vid
I know what prog. means but I said "this was supposed to be metal" but yeah indulge yourself little genius, make yourself happy thinking you "0wnz" me because I am not gonna argue about progresive metal, because if we are here its implied we do know. I never questioned whether or not you know it.
@Megadedly It's not ignorant to have an opinion on which era of Opeth is the best.
I love Heritage, but I hope that Opeth goes back to do a few more death metal tracks every now and then. There's not a single song that Opeth has created that is not absolute brilliance, and that definitely includes Heritage.
@TutteBass Also "the metal sense of things" sounds too stiff for what Opeth is.
hahahaha i do listened to those bands for like 4 years mattey...
and then again..
Opeth Progressive or not...it still stays Forest Metal.
Wich is True.
So no doubt on that one.
@timmotjo17 yeah PRS Guitars are hot....and Expensive.
@cladny Not really, but it does mean you're maybe not a progressive fan.
@DoomScytheBand What? stating facts? oh wow sorry for stating facts.
Anyone know the blue prs model?
Had to click on it cause Tesla told me to.
@DzagielAreq Mikael said that himself. I'm not exactly wrong.
