My first Pokémon game was Pokémon yellow . Then I had blue , then I got gold , then crystal , then ruby , then emerald . Then diamond , then platinum , then I got White 2 and my last Pokémon game was Y 😊 My favorite is emerald , platinum and white 2
Platinum was my first as well didn't know anything about the games just picked it over diamond and pearl on the shelf of my local game used game store because the box art looked cooler to me and I'm glad I did because diamond and pearl are rough to play through now
🟥🟦The best way is start from the best remakes of each reagin and generation 1-Kanto: FireRed / LeafGreeen 2-Johto: HearthGold / SoulSilver 3-Hoenn: Alpha Sapphire / Omega Ruby 4-Sinnoh: Platinum 5-Unova: Black / White then Black2 / White2 6-Kalos: X / Y 7-Alola: Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon 8-Galar: Sword / Shield 9-Paldea: Scarlet / Violet That's the best route period
My first was diamond but I never finished it because I was a dumb little boy, platinum followed and made some friends who like the game too, then cam soul silver and white… those two cemented me a Pokémon fan for life
This is quality content! I hope these sort of informative videos get more popular. You really went right to the point, and you stated all the pros and cons of each game, and how they are different. Pokemon foreverrrr!!!!!!!!!
Last 2021, I planned to play Pokemon games as a beginner, but then I had this dilemma as to which game should I play first, since I explored its titles from the Wikipedia and from the Pokemon's Official website, there's just way too many to choose from! But after thorough research and considering the availability of the handheld consoles I could play with, I ended up playing with Firered as my first (through android emulator, that is). I chose Firered since it was mentioned that it was the remakes of the first ever titles released (Red/Blue). I did consider Red/Blue, but if I'm going to play the first games, I'd rather choose the one with better graphics instead, not to mention that its mechanics/features were updated too. But actually there's this game on switch called Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee and it was supposed to be the remakes of the first games too, but I can't play with it since I don't have a Nswitch at that time. So I really had one option to begin with. I just like the idea of really knowing the Pokemon games back to its foundation, and to me, Firered did just that. I was introduced to the concept of catching mons, raising them, and being the best trainer ever. I fell in love with the game instantly, and when I was done with it, I wanted to continue playing Pokemon. So for me, I'd definitely recommend FireRed/LeafGreen. Or Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee.
good choice. i see you are a youngster. i also recommend starting for the roots and gen3 is absolutly the perfect way to start. means first pkmn Firered/leafgreen and then emerald (or ruby sapphire but emerald is the better version) and after gen 3 go on with gen4 pokemon platin, pokemon Heartgold/soulsilver (BEST GAMES) and then gen 5 BLACK/WHITE and then B2/W2. everything else on the 3ds generation didnt catched me up back then. old gen pokemon games were the best so you doing everything right to visit the old saga of pokemon retro gaming.
I love that you done this research and decided which game was best for your specific situation at that time! I agree if starting from Kanto is important to you then both of your recommendations are brilliant. I hope you found the video entertaining!
Where did you go after playing firered? I just finished it and was wondering if I should just go to the next generation or is there something I should do first?
@@TheKneeGrow i'm currently playing emerald version, doing lots of battle frontier challenges and the pokedex as well. The game has more side quests than FireRed, it's fun!
I have an Anbernic retro console so the accessibility to older games isn't an issue. I have zero experience with the pokemon games so I appreciate your recommendations.
as a kid i collected the game just as i collected pokemon, i had yellow red blue and even a non european version of Green that was not sold back in the day in EU
i’ve played every gen up to 7 (some in a more legal way than others) and i would have to agree with your take - and that is coming from a hardened gen 5 supporter. hgss are objectively the best games from the DS era, and a great place to start for a beginner. USUM are basically 1:1 with SM but with some more goodies in it, and while they weren’t ORAS, they were still pretty good from a “learn the basic mechanics” stand point. Emerald and other gen 3 games are self explanatory, they are universally loved. my own personal bias would definitely suggest BW (immediately followed by their sequels) or platinum, since both of those gens have a special place in my heart. TT
Thanks for agreeing and I think your choices are great too, and it is very difficult to pick the 'best place to start' due to it always being situation specific. I think most Pokemon games are great and can develop a new fans love of the franchise. I just think some are better for beginners due to the well done tutorial, simple mechanics or just being great games and universally loved! Thanks for commenting on the giving and helping others with your own recommendations!
I would’ve started out with gen 4 or gen 5 but due to circumstance, I ended up with gen 6 as my first main line Pokémon game. It was fun. At one point, child me thought that game freak was the name of a hacker that was removing hoopa from people’s games. I was upset that I missed out on getting the cool ring guy.
Making a biased decision, no matter how small is awful advice. I know it’s hard to say which game to start with. That’s why there is no good game to start with. It’s all on the person. Let’s Go are excellent for beginners. Sure it has a different mechanic, but what 8 year old is gonna sit through a Typical Pokémon battle? They must be eased into it, much like Let’s Go does. I’ve seen it time and time again with my nieces and nephews. Maybe a person doesn’t want to miss the experience of all the games, so the obvious answer is red/blue. Everyone is different. I started with Gen 1 in high school. My best friend didn’t like Pokémon at all because of the lack of movement and graphics. It took until X/Y for him to fall in love with the series. I absolutely love Sword/Shield, and I’m coming from a Gen 1 mentality. For some reason it always gets hate with no reason other than Dexit… pretty dumb reason. This would have been an excellent video is show a bunch of reasons on why certain games are good and bad in detail. I know you’re just starting, so take this as a learning point. Making something absolute is not a great way to go. These kinds of questions are never easy to answer, so the answers are always in a grey area.
Hey, I didn't mean for the video to come across bias, I believe I did try to fairly assess all of the games but it did happen to be some I recommend are also SOME of my favourites. I say this as someone who loves all the game! I apologise if you thought my opinions played a too prevalent role in the decision and I hope you were still able to enjoy the video! Thanks for the advice and for watching!
My first edition was Blue. I personally would recommend the ORAS games, bc they have all the types, Hoenn is beautiful and has so many great pokemon. The antagonists are cool. I like May/Brandon a lot. The games aren't the most easiest, but not the most difficult either :)
I started with Moon, but actually finished sword first then moon, then Brilliant diamond, then violet, then alpha sapphire, legends arceus, then ultra moon, then black and black 2 and recently X and Sun. In a weeks time i will start Soul silver for the first time. So i differently have a unorthodox journey lol
One thing im confused about is whats the difference for the two games in each generation? For example black and white. Does it matter if i play white first? Then black second? Do i need to play both? Can i skip white if i already played black? Would i miss anything?
My First Pokémon Game Was Yellow During My First Year Of Middle School (1999-2000) On Christmas Day 1999, I Also Got Game Boy Color On That Christmas Day Too.
Pokemon sun was my first in terms of story games. It was a solid game, I enjoyed many aspects of it but TOO much dialogue and cutscenes I got bored by it in that sense.
I think they're great games but the early game especially is very slow due to the amount of dialogue and cutscenes. On the other hand, this does allow for one of the better stories in Pokemon so I still find them enjoyable to play through. Thanks for sharing your story!
My first was red and emerald but i really didnt like pokemon back then , 6 years ago i started to get back into them so i started with pokemon black and I FELL IN LOVE !! I just beat black my very first pokemon game i ever beat lol now im playing diamond and i wanna get black 2 and pearl but man they are expensive!!
I disagree with your #1 spot. G/S/C and HS/SS are sequel titles to generation 1, a lot of the characters reference Red and the shock that Red (you) is on Mt. Silver is lost if they play these games first. I think B/W, FR/LG, and Emerald are good places to start (listed in no particular order). D/P/Pt is a finale of the first 4 regions so they're out, BW2 are sequels so they're out. the let's go games are different from the rest of the series so idk it could give an odd impression of what to expect. US/UM are said to be of the hardest in series- it's better to start with something easier to avoid too much frustration. X/Y is an okay place to start, it's easy so they can get the gist of these battle gimmicks and mechanics in an environment that wouldn't be too punishing
Thanks for explaining your opinion. I think X/Y are a bit too easy and might not be the best games to fully show off how immersive Pokemon can be, especially with some struggle within the games. Everyone's opinion is different though and I still think these can be great games to start with for some people. Thanks for commenting!
Black and White should be first. I might be more elaborate later on, but imo the more Pokémon games you play and the more you understand how the nature of Pokémon works prior to playing Pokémon Black and White, the more Pokémon Black and White loses its significance. Starting the series with just Unova Pokémon is one ofnthe reasons this is critical, because it becomes immensely jarring having a game with just Unova Pokémon far after you've established yourself in the series, and it's really limiting to what freedom there is to this game.
Kanto could reasonably fit in as well. Preferably FRLG, since there would be more of a point to retroactively going back to RBY later down the line and LGPE throws in elements of its story and worldbuilding that rely on playing through multiple other Pokémon games in order to fully embrace imo.
What would you reccomend if playing only Switch relases was only option? Arceus looks best fo me but I would like to try classic formula from previous games first.
I think Legends Arceus is the best game. However, I'd recommend playing Brilliant Diamond if you want a traditional game. A lot of people don't like these games but they are very fun especially if you never played the original generation 4 games. So that would be my recommendation even though they are not the best games on switch! Thanks for asking!
The whole accessibility thing can be completely ignored with emulation it's extremely easy to emulate the first 5 generations and gen 6 and 7 aren't to bad if you have a PC that isn't an absolute potato
If I was going to introduce a newcomer to Pokémon, I would have them play the games in the following order FireRed/LeafGreen HeartGold/SoulSilver Emerald Platinum Black/White Black2/White2 X/Y Sun/Moon UltraSun/UltraMoon Sword/Shield Scarlet/Violet
Chronologically to a degree. I skipped Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire Let’s Go Eevee/Let’s Go Pikachu Legends Arceus Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl Because their corresponding previous iterations are still playable with Pokémon that can be transferred up to the current generation. So long as the current generation supports the Pokémon. It sucks that the newest games aren’t compatible with every Pokémon that proceeded them. I didn’t include Green/Red/Blue/Yellow Or Gold/Silver/Crystal Because their Pokémon cannot be transferred up to the latest generation of Pokémon. If you’re playing a physical cartridge & not a digital copy, that is.
My opinion: 1st gen If you are not impatient then you should try original Red/Blue and Yellow( if you are, then start with remakes) 2nd gen Then gold/ silver and crystal 3rd gen Then ruby/sapphire and emerald If you want more Pokemons and wanted to complete Pokedex then Fire red and leaf green too 4th gen: diamond/pearl and platinum If you wanted to complete Pokedex then Heart gold/silver 5th gen Black/white then their sequal for sure 6th gen x/ Y For pokedex omega ruby/aplha sapphire 7th gen Sun/moon and ultra version if you wnated to complete pokedex and explore story You can also try yellow(gen 1) remake: lets go Pikachu/eevee 8th gen Sword/sheild 4th gen remake Brilliant diamond/shining pearl Well people dont like them over original games 9th gen scarlet/violet If you are impatient then try remakes but I have to say there are some references to Old Pokemon Games As the one whose playing order was like this First game: fire red Second: emerald Third: X Fourth: white Fifth: Platinum Now when I see some shorts I get to know common facts of story connections, more like spoilers Well thats my opinion
I really wish gens 1-3 could end up on switch/switch 2 eventually. Emerald needs to be played by people who havent had the chance to try it. Especially since it goes for like 220-300 dollars, plus you need either a GBA or a gamecube gameboy player. I mean you could always just 🏴☠️it for easy access though 😂
Fire Red/Leaf Green Why? Because FRLF is kanto but the best version of kanto, not the glitchy and outdated gb/gbc games but also not the hand holdy and pokemon go tie in that is lets go, A perfect balance FrLg has many quality of life and graphical improvements and a great post game that's missing from all other kanto games (It was the one i started with but that's besides the point)
I was trying to say in the video I believe they are better due to the 60FPS running and movement being so smooth which I had mentioned earlier in the video. Sorry if this was unclear! There was more reasons such as the Battle Frontier being in the Gen 3 versions, however I was trying to ensure the video was not too long. Thanks for noticing this, I'll try to not miss any reasoning in future videos.
I feel like this is a terrible recomendation based on accessibility alone. Like sure emerald, platinum, and HG are peak, but someone trying to get into pokemon in 2024 probably only owns a switch and doesnt want to shell out insane amounts of money to try out pokemon. Yes they can emulate, but I feel the social aspects of pokemon and being able to bring your favorite mon to other games is an important part of the experience. Not putting any switch pokemon games on this list really makes it seem less like a beginners guide, and more like a "my favorite pokemon games that arent sequels"
Yeah, but to be fair with the quality of the Switch pokemon game, the switch games would probably turn a lot of people off from the franchise. Let's go were well made, but some people might not like the catching mechanic. I'd recommend omega ruby and alpha sapphire. They are still to this day really easy to get your hands on and and i think that they have a nice amount of story, which isn't going to overwhelm the player like sun and moon with all their cutscenes. Finally, it's nice because it's an older region design on modern hardware, which still has some openness, unlike sword and shield. Oh and there's enough post game to keep the player entertained even after the elite 4 unlike scarlet and violet which has practically no post game unless you want to shell out an extra 40 bucks which coincidentally is the exact problem for a new copy of ORAS. but Idk it could just be me. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Hey, thanks for your comment and advice. You're correct in that looking back I should've gave a Switch game recommendation as it's the most recent console, thanks for telling me! I hope you still enjoyed the video!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! As I said in the video I do prefer Emerald to ORAS, but that's still a great recommendation! Thank you again for your comment!!
Just get a emulator I can play any Pokémon I want on my Wii and have a link cable emulator lol and you can get remastered enhanced versions of older ones like yellow and crystal and it’s free and way better quality and you don’t have too play on a small shit screen
I think ultra sun and moon are one of the better stories out of the Pokemon games, especially in the more recent games. It's ok if you don't agree, thanks for commenting!
I've been playing ultra sun and moon for the shiny legendaries. I have sword and shield as well as violet but damn do they disappoint... I wish Alola was bigger and more complete but the art style is so much better than the latter games in my opinion
I haven't watched the video, but I don't recommend USUM first. They're my favorite Pokémon games, but I think they're more designed for the veterans of the series.
Its a real shame that it is so hard to access any of the gen 3, 4 or 5 games, as the ultimate version of those gens are better than anything that came after by a significant margin. These games shouldn’t cost 100s of dollars to play. Its kinda hard to give recommendations for good pokemon games on a budget, as the ones that are easy to access tend to be the worst the series has to offer, now that nintendo was mean and shut down the 3ds eshop, my choices are limited even further. I’m gonna go with the og pokemon mystery dungeon remakes, yeah they’re kinda cheating, but I didn’t exactly have many compelling options, they might have the worst story by far of any Pokémon mystery dungeon game, but its a remake that actually looks decent and didn’t remove content, besides that area you visit recruited pokemon and the map changes for the top few floors of dungeons, yeah its a remake that’s debatably worse than the og, but only slightly worse. That’s where my standards are at for modern Pokemon games. Though if you are willing to spend a bit more Ultra sun/moon is decent-ish, its the last mainline game I consider worth playing, even though it kinda ruins the story of the og Sun/Moon. But more importantly, both gates and super mystery dungeon are amazing first picks if you can find them, I’d consider them some of the best stories in pokemon games up there with the Pokémon adventures manga. Even for spinoff games the best choices are still stuck on the ds unfortunately though.
I agree it's unfortunate that some of the games I'd recommend to play first are not very easy to access. I'd love to see Pokemon bring out some sort of collection or virtual console so at least some of the classics are abled to be played on there! You've brought up some great points about spin off games, this could be a possible video in the future where I give my recommendations for spin off games. Thanks for commenting!
I think gen 4 is objectively the worst pokemon game. I think someone completely new to the series should start with gen 4, so that nostalgia will boost the game to a playable point, and they'll enjoy the entire series more.
@@MilkyWayGrump I personally enjoyed X and Y. I remember when they came out and I played the heck out of X. I'm more of a competitive player though, and I really enjoyed the battle spot scene and 6v6 singles back then.
i would say firered/leafgreen as the 1st generation is the most iconic and is also pretty good

If you have a ds or ds lite you can also play gen 3 games
I loved Pokémon emerald! And i still do!
Thanks for your comment !
The whole accessibility thing can be completely ignored with emulation it's extremely easy to emulate the first 5 generations and gen 6 and 7 aren't to bad if you have a PC that isn't an absolute potato
If I was going to introduce a newcomer to Pokémon, I would have them play the games in the following order
FireRed/LeafGreen
HeartGold/SoulSilver
Emerald
Platinum
Black/White
Black2/White2
X/Y
Sun/Moon
UltraSun/UltraMoon
Sword/Shield
Scarlet/Violet
Thanks for the recommendation. Seems like you enjoy doing them chronologically.
Chronologically to a degree. I skipped Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire
Let’s Go Eevee/Let’s Go Pikachu
Legends Arceus
Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl
Because their corresponding previous iterations are still playable with Pokémon that can be transferred up to the current generation. So long as the current generation supports the Pokémon. It sucks that the newest games aren’t compatible with every Pokémon that proceeded them. I didn’t include
Green/Red/Blue/Yellow
Or
Gold/Silver/Crystal
Because their Pokémon cannot be transferred up to the latest generation of Pokémon. If you’re playing a physical cartridge & not a digital copy, that is.
My opinion:
1st gen
If you are not impatient then you should try original Red/Blue and Yellow( if you are, then start with remakes)
2nd gen
Then gold/ silver and crystal
3rd gen
Then ruby/sapphire and emerald
If you want more Pokemons and wanted to complete Pokedex then Fire red and leaf green too
4th gen: diamond/pearl and platinum
If you wanted to complete Pokedex then Heart gold/silver
5th gen
Black/white then their sequal for sure
6th gen
x/ Y
For pokedex omega ruby/aplha sapphire
7th gen
Sun/moon and ultra version if you wnated to complete
pokedex and explore story
You can also try yellow(gen 1) remake: lets go Pikachu/eevee
8th gen
Sword/sheild
4th gen remake
Brilliant diamond/shining pearl
Well people dont like them over original games
9th gen
scarlet/violet
If you are impatient then try remakes but I have to say there are some references to Old Pokemon Games
As the one whose playing order was like this
First game: fire red
Second: emerald
Third: X
Fourth: white
Fifth: Platinum
Now when I see some shorts I get to know common facts of story connections, more like spoilers
Well thats my opinion
Thank you for sharing your recommendation. Really appreciated!
@@AlphaOrange99 👍🏼
i started with cards but my first game was violet i think its cool
but ya i dont have a ds so im pretty much just destitute
I would definitely recommend trying the other Pokemon games on switch if you enjoyed violet!
I really hope we get some older games on Switch too! Thanks for commenting!
What would've been like if only 1990s babies can like Pokemon? While the series are always aimed towards us?
Fire Red/Leaf Green
Why?
Because FRLF is kanto but the best version of kanto, not the glitchy and outdated gb/gbc games but also not the hand holdy and pokemon go tie in that is lets go,
A perfect balance
FrLg has many quality of life and graphical improvements and a great post game that's missing from all other kanto games
(It was the one i started with but that's besides the point)
Thanks for the recommendation
1st pokemon game was blue when pokemon hit the states.
Thanks for sharing!!
Pokemon Emerald is the best Pokemon game id ever played
It is one of my favourites too! Thanks for sharing!
Black 2 was my first
Thanks for sharing!
Gameboy Advance games can be played on the DS
Good point, they are still quite expensive though. Thanks for commenting!
My favorite is definitely dark 2 and omega ruby
I'll keep it real play Platinum first.
Platinum is a great recommendation! Thanks
2:57 And you don't even elaborate why.
3:48 sir did i just hear great story? How
I think ultra sun and moon are one of the better stories out of the Pokemon games, especially in the more recent games. It's ok if you don't agree, thanks for commenting!
Ngl ultra games are peak
U mean ultra shit and ultra scam?
I think they're good games and a lot better than Sun and Moon. I understand they may not be for everyone though. Thanks for your comment
Damm where's the dislike button
XY are too easy, and that's why you wouldn't recommend? I'd say that makes them good starting games for the younger crowd.
Pokemon X was my first
Thanks for sharing! Hope you enjoyed the video!
Emerald and Platinum (optional)
HGSS and BW2 (Mandatory)
And you're done
Thanks for sharing your opinion!
1:27, no. You can also play on a DS Lite.
Or Gamecube Advance player
Nah ORAS was best start though I started with black and white 2 lollll
If u want bs hard then go with ultra moon
Great video
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed!
Started with y
Thanks for sharing!
my first games is ruby
Thank you for sharing!
Pokémon crystal
Is the best
It's a great game! Thanks for commenting.
I only have mobile 😂
Pokémon Go is a great game to be fair haha! I hope this video inspired you to try a mainline series game. Thank you for watching!
Emerald
Better late than never ahh
5:13
I think gen 4 is objectively the worst pokemon game. I think someone completely new to the series should start with gen 4, so that nostalgia will boost the game to a playable point, and they'll enjoy the entire series more.
Imagine saying this when non-ORAS Gen 6 exists
Bro wtf are you trying to say?
You said gen 4 is the worst
And then you said you should start from there
Like what?
Thanks for commenting your thoughts!
@@MilkyWayGrump I personally enjoyed X and Y. I remember when they came out and I played the heck out of X. I'm more of a competitive player though, and I really enjoyed the battle spot scene and 6v6 singles back then.
Lmao true tho
