Why I Bought the Nikon Z7 II for Landscape Photography and Wildlife Photography

- This is why I bought the Nikon Z7 II for my landscape photography and wildlife photography. I head out on my first landscape photography outing with the Nikon Z7 II and capture my first two images with the camera. I also discuss the lenses I have purchased so far (Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/4 S and Nikkor Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR) and my thinking behind my purchases. This is not a review but I do give my thoughts on the quality of the lenses and show some example images.

Welcome to the Nikon family! All cameras made today are amazing (we are very spoiled). Nikon has been my choice for years doing landscape and low light photography. The dynamic range and latitude of the RAW files surpass all other brands for my personal workflow. The S lenses are incredible too, not that the F mount line was bad by any means, but the short flange distance to sensor of the Z mount brings a whole different level of image quality.

I'm half way of your path, I sold my Fuji stuff, I need to collect now similar set up you've got, Z7II, 14-30, 24-200, incoming 40mm f2 and 100-400s. Nikon z lenses are amazing!

I'm lucky my fuji XT2 died before I spent too much on the fuji ecosystem...
Some beautiful and very sharp images in there. Very helpful for me as I am planning a “return to Nikon” later in the year.
I have literally just sold my D850 + all my F mount lenses and have the NIKON Z7 II. I also have the 14-30 and 24-200. Like you it was about the weight initially - as I do some failrly long walks now and weight for me was becoming an issue. I used the new equipment for the first time yesterday on a reasonably long remote Scottish walk. Once home I opened up the images in Lightroom and I have to say I found the qualty of the images amazing. I have just subscribed to your channel as I am also interested in landscape and nature photography. GHood stuff here ....

@@WayneRobertsonPhotography Z7 II is virtually the D850. The lenses are amazing both in compact ability and weight.
Thanks for sharing Wayne. I feel like I am losing a few of my fellow Fuji X series photographers lately to either another manufacturer or to the GFX series cameras because of sensor size and mega pixels. There are many reasons for switching gear and as a professional, it is a tool for your trade so it isn’t personal when you switch to another tool that fits what you are doing. If you are doing general carpentry and start only doing framing, you would need a different hammer because you needs have changed. Some times as a non professional, we follow along with what the pro is using and try to duplicate it if possible. So, bottom line, it’s up to each photographer as what they need and fits their style. I will miss you talking about my beloved Fuji X series cameras but love your content and really, that’s all that matters to me. Cheers, Rob.

I enjoy using photography gear but you are correct in saying a camera is also a tool and I try to use the tool which is best for my needs and/or makes things easier in some way. The 14-30 and 24-200 pair perfectly. Both weak at the wide end so the overlapping focal length range works in your favour here, ie. 14-30 is superb from about 16mm and the 24-200 (with some stopping down) is excellent from about 35mm. It’s a great two lens kit for hiking. I also like pairing the 14-30 with the 1.8/85 prime, which trades reach at the long end for shallow depth of field, great for wildflowers, autumn foliage, etc. Be warned though, the Z primes are simply spectacular world class lenses, and you might not want to use anything else once you try them!
Some good combinations for sure, I enjoy shooting with primes 😊 I'll most likely get the Z 14-30mm at some point.

I’m really impressed with the performance of the Z7 II along with the amazing Z-mount lenses. I currently own the trinity of Z-mount f/2.8 zoom lenses along with the 35mm f/1.8S, 85mm f/1.8S, 50mm f/1.2S, and the new 105mm f/2.8S Macro. I also own the two teleconverters for the Z-mount which work beautifully with the 70-200mm f/2.8S.
That’s a great collection of lenses 👍🏻 I too am impressed with the camera and lenses, they are working well for my needs 😊
I have both the 14/30 f4 and the 24/70 f4 lenses and their optical quality is outstanding and they’re very small and lite weight. The difference in size, weight and cost vs. the f2.8 versions just doesn’t pencil out for my amateur needs. I did get the 70/200 f2.8 which is a fantastic lens but heavy such that if they at some point make an f4 version I would happily switch to save the weight. These Nikon S lenses are outstanding optically and are the only reason I’ve stayed with Nikon.

I’m in this scenario where I have the xt4, 10-24, 16-55, 50-140, 100-400 and 35f2. Very invested and I shoot Landscapes 75% of the time, wildlife 25%. As much as I love my Fuji, I’m noticing that as someone who drops and wants all the detail for landscapes, the Nikon z7ii has been catching my eyes. Mainly for DR and 45 mp. It’s so hard to let go of Fuji, but I do want better results and definitely don’t want to switch to C1
Thanks for your comment. As someone very familiar with both systems (and who has most of the Fuji lenses you use) my advice would be to think very carefully before switching. It is true that you’ll get the benefits you mention with the Nikon, and if you need them then that’s great reason to switch. However the Fuji can produce stunning images too with the right post processing. Both are excellent cameras but you do have an excellent Fuji setup so my honest advice would be to only switch if you feel you must. I hope that helps.
@@WayneRobertsonPhotography I really appreciate your comment. I think for me, I do a lot of acrylic printing and the most common/biggest size I ever have my customers request is a 24x36. Did you ever have any issues pushing Fuji files to this print size?
I’m happy printing my images at A2 on paper with a 26MP Fuji as in I think it holds up well to close inspection. To print at the size you mention the quality will drop significantly but it depends on viewing distance and what an individual feels is acceptable. There is of course software now to boost the resolution for large printing which will help.

I've had the XT4 and 5 great lenses as well including the 10-24, 50-140, and 3 others! I don't want to leave fuji but i may add a second system w/ less lenses to my arsenal and i have been looking at what nikon has been doing w/ the Z9 of course, and the z7ii. I'm waiting to see what the "XT5" or XH-2's will have going for them. Do you have or are getting the z9 or sticking with the z7ii. i see some people selling the z7ii at this time with decent discount to anyone wanting a used one!
I’m sticking with the Z7 II. Although the Z9 is a great camera, since I’m mostly doing landscape photography it wouldn’t be of benefit to me. It would offer advantages for wildlife but I couldn’t justify changing and I’m very happy with the Z7 II for my needs.
I'm at this page too, but I think I'm made up I want to return to full frame. My XT-3 has been super and earned me good money professionally but time for a change. The Z7 II looks like the winner
Had to watch to see your take on the camera for wildlife but, I'm guessing you haven't done any yet. Have you done all the firmware updates & if so, how does the AF work so far? I am still shooting the D810 & use the 200-500 for wildlife find that my percentage of keepers (although getting much better & because I haven't done it all that much) isn't all that good, causing me to take a lot of photos to get a good number of keepers. I want the tilt screen & focus stacking feature & may pull the plug on a D850 & 500pf 5.6 or, used 500f4. I would switch brands (& still might) but the cost of all new lens replacement =ouch! Happy shooting.
PS: What are using to film these videos?
I haven’t done any serious wildlife photography yet - I’m waiting for a Z lens that will meet my requirements. However I have done a little bit with the longest focal length that I have and it worked well, that was with the latest firmware at the time. Sorry I can’t be more help but I don’t feel I can give useful advice on wildlife until I get the lens I want and do more testing.
I’ve been seriously considering a Z7II but the unscrupulous behaviour of Nikon with the initial launch of the Z6/Z7 having purposely omitted features really puts me off investing in a company who clearly doesn’t have its end uses as their priority.
I’m sort of straddling Fujifilm and Canon RF currently but the Z7II+24-200 looks like a great fuss free setup for hiking and 90% of my needs.
In terms of fine detail and overall output how do you find the x-t4/Fuji 2.8s compare with the Z7II/24-200 combo.
A very logical upgrade. Fuji X has its limitations. I also used to shoot Fuji and upgraded to Nikon and I never looked back. Fuji's image quality was sup par, especially the colors in the shadows. Once I compared how much I can recover from the D810, I was amazed.

Thanks Gerry. I’m going from memory (and perhaps firmware updates will have changed a few things) but at the time of my purchase Z7 II offered: dual memory card slots, extra processor, better focusing /additional focus modes, some video benefits, ability to clear all info. from viewfinder or rear screen. There were more differences but that is what mattered to me at the time.
Enjoyable content Wayne, i shoot with a Nikon D810 with 24- 120 lens and others. I have been thinking about changing to the Z system. Watched quite a few vlogs about it. Some say its a good system some like the Angry photographer does not rate it very well. Still like cameras cars etc if you took note of peoples comments you would not buy anything. For now i will carry on thinking about changing or not. Thank you for sharing Wayne and all the best with your new Camera.
Thank you John. I've never owned a D810 but I believe it is a really nice camera. I'm really enjoying the Z7 II so far, I like to use things for a much longer period before giving a definitive opinion but I'm optimistic that it will serve me well. You are right about everything getting mixed opinions depending on what you read... If you have any questions about the camera etc. feel free to get in touch.
I hope they release an update for the Z7 mark 1 which lets you clear the back LCD panel.. without that it's a no go for me and I can't justify an extra £1000+ for the Z7II body. I'd also like to see what the 24-105 and 100-400 are like and if Tamron or Sigma make some Z mount lenses.
Being able to clear the display is definitely an important feature for me too.
The D850 is a great camera but the Z7ll is better , you will love it
Nice video. So what was your conclusion after shooting both the 24-70 and the 24-200? Can you get enough resolution out of the 24-200 to max out the Z7II sensor? BTW, what's that khaki coloured backpack you have?
Thanks. Both lenses are really good but the 24-70mm is slightly better. I’m very happy with the 24-200mm lens and it produces excellent results. If I remember correctly the z 24-200 f4 is not actually an S series z lens even though I believe it takes some very good images and has a descent focal range.
That’s right, it’s not an S lens but produces great quality images all things considered.

The Nikon Z7ii should be a great choice for Landscape - especially if you are already a Nikon user...
Yes it’s definitely a great camera for landscape photography!
The advantage of the Fuji is the compact size including the lenses - great for vacation and street. For me, the advantage of the Z7II lies exclusively in cropping the images. The Z7II is the better camera if you buy the appropriate Z-lenses, unfortunately Nikon does not make much of an effort in terms of good standard lenses (24-124, 100-400 ect.).
They will be released 24-70 24-200 are amazing lens

Sold nikon ff gear went to fuji. Great for everyday, people, weddings etc and a joy to use.BUT the worm effect sucks on lightroom and I hate capture 1. Also, boy did I miss the Nikon. Despite it being a lead brick its worth it for cropping DR and choice of lenses (tamron G2 particularly) living in the Highland, I also want robustness i have retained my fuji but am going back to a D850. and fx lenses. I have more confidence in the d850 Dslr than the Z. Coming from a d810 i have total confidence in build. Z looks flimsy. Z mount lenses are very expensive for 2.8 zooms and the f4s, though sharp are very plastic and sound clicky and cheap. I also can't see me wanting to adapt big lenses to a small camera. Ibis and evfs are great but give me a solid work horse that delivers for landscape and wildlife

Thanks for watching. I felt I had a justifiable need to change to a full-frame camera, for the reasons I mentioned in the video and also a few other job related reasons. I’m using a camera many times each week. That said the X-T4 and many other cameras which aren’t full-frame are excellent and are very capable, and are used professionally. In the end it really comes down to your own individual needs, if your X-T4 does what you require perhaps there isn’t a need to change.

Absolutely no reason to buy full frame. It’s purely for people suffering GAS. All modern digital cameras are so close in their dynamic range and overall IQ it makes no difference. I’ve had D610>D850>A7R and been more than happy with the Fuji gear for 4 years now. I’d never go back to full frame.

After researching company histories and corporate/business philosophies, going with Nikon was an easy decision.
Can I ask something off subject.. Are you wearing leg wear to protect from snakes 🐍?
There is a small risk from snakes in some areas but what I wear is just for protection from the elements, wet areas etc.
This is the UK, nothing wants to kill you here...apart from the government.
Hi Wayne, enjoyed today's video update on your camera. I must say I quite fancy that setup, and have heard good things about it ( check out Hudson Henry's channel). I am shooting Sony and just got a good deal on a second hand A7riii which I am loving with my 24-105mm, so I won't be switching for a while. Have fun with your new pal!

As an ex Canon user why didn’t you consider the R5?
I did consider the R5 and various other camera options, but based on the lenses I wanted I could get a slightly lighter kit with Nikon and still have excellent quality. There was also a huge price difference to go with the R5 which I couldn't justify.
The side hinged rear LCD is pants that's why, and Canon have decided not to give us a choice.
I'm still shooting Nikon DSLRs D800 and D7200 respectively and cannot justify the expense of going Mirrorless (to my wife 😂)
That's not quite true, I've a Lumix GX9 for travel but that hasn't happened much since covid 😱
They are still great cameras. I do prefer mirrorless overall but everything has its good and bad points.
I use M43 for portability (age, health, and ony having a scooter, are an issue), and I am generally happy until I watch a video like this one where I can see that sometimes I am not getting the best IQ.

I think gear matters too, but only in that the gear we use meets our requirements. I am sure you've taken some great photographs and M43 can produce nice results too. Best wishes, Wayne.
I too use MFT at the moment and find DXO pure raw deals with noise and really gets the best out of the Olympus RAW files. I also use the enhance feature in LR that gives really good 80mb files that I'm really happy with. It's really expensive to switch systems when you have a lot of lenses. Olympus pro glass is simply amazing too, especially consider the prices they go for. The Nikon System does look good though and IBIS removes the need for a tripod a lot of the time.
@@RichardsModellingAdventures I don't have LR, but does creating an 80MP file improve the actual IQ? I do use Photolabs 4 and agree that it does a great job on the noise.
