3 IMPORTANT Landscape Photography Techniques to Learn
Just bought that lens, can’t wait to get out and use it
Thanks for a great video and honest review.
Thanks I appreciate it and I’m glad you enjoyed watching.
14:50, never a truer word spoken! Great shot of the woodpecker!
I was fortunate to see a variety of species on this day but it's certainly not always like that! Thanks so much for watching I appreciate it.
Lovely video Wayne, you captured fantastic footage of the kestrel with its prey and also some great shots of the buzzards. Take care. Mick.
Thanks Mick! Much appreciated and I’m glad you enjoyed watching. Best wishes.
Hi Robert. Thanks for the video. Soon I will have the same setup(body+lens) as on the video. I need a backpack also to keep body with attached lens during moving in mountain. I am wondering about the size of will fit in backpack. Can you share your view on the topic. How do you use the interior of your backpack with this lens and body. Can you share model of the backpack used in the video? Thanks in advance
I would actually love to see the failings as much as the success of the adventures. Thanks
Thanks for watching and for letting me know! I’ll definitely keep that in mind.
I'm pleased you put this up, Wayne. It shows the reality of wildlife photography: many days without even a sniff of a shot, but that one moment of magic is what makes it all worthwhile. I really enjoy your honest videos. Many thanks, Mick.
Hi Mick, thanks for watching and for sharing your thoughts. I’m glad you enjoyed the video; in the end I thought it contained a good message and was worth sharing. Best wishes, Wayne.
I am glad you are so respectful of the animals you are trying to photograph. I do a a regular walk with my dog on the lead around a local pond. I'm sure the birds know we are coming. I have a bridge camera that goes out to 1200 mm. What I find is that the zoom allows me to frame my subject without cropping. I've learned the limits of the long telephoto with the bridge camera. I get blurry images when the shutter speed is not fast enough. I get purple fringing. So I rely a lot on post processing. I also have another wonderful camera, a Panasonic G9ii with a long telephoto. It's heavier and not as portable as the bridge camera. So I "scout" the scene with the bridge camera and come back later with my better camera. I find that if I return to the same place every few days I see more and I get better photos. I'm always surprised when I'm ready to give up, I get the bird.
Thank you for watching and for your nice comment. I feel that it’s important to put wildlife first so I always try my best regarding that. I enjoyed reading about your own photography - repeated visits can be very useful and I know the feeling of seeing something at the last minute! Best wishes and good luck with your photography.
Some great shots of a beautiful bird. I look forward to seeing where the project takes you.
Thanks very much, I’m excited to spend more time with these birds.
Hi, thanks for video, do you try z 180-600 mm?
Thanks for watching! No I haven’t used that lens.
Did you shoot all photos with the X-T3? Do you think IBIS in other fuji cameras will be better than with the X-T3? Great review!
Thanks! All with X-T3. Other bodies which have IBIS could prove more useful in certain situations over the X-T3.
Fantastic video - thank you very much!
Thank you I appreciate it!
I got tired of waiting for the Z6iii so I too ended up with a Z8. I got tired of waiting for the 200(180)-600 and ended up with the Z800/6.3. That said before I bought the 800mm I picked up the 100-400 as well as the 1.4TC. Between 100-300 the lens is brilliant, but at 400 or with the 1.4 attached, it's quite good but not great, IMO. That said, for large animals/landscape it is brilliant and I can't see getting rid of this lens especially since it makes a great "just in case" lens to bring with me when I might see animals while travelling but want to travel relatively light.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I think the Z 100-400mm is a great choice for those doing both landscape and wildlife photography.
Great video Wayne. I have a Z8 and Zf, with 14-30, 24-120, 100-400, 180-600 and 105 2.8 MC. What are your pro's and con's on using the Z8 in DX Crop mode vs using the 1.4 TC. Would be a nice video to see image quality test comparing in crop mode vs 1.4 TC. You're correct about using left hand to support the longer lens. I assigned the movie record button to cycle through the focus modes. You can select only the 4 or 5 you use the most so you can cycle faster on the modes you use instead of all of them. Truly wish Nikon will replace the D500 with a pro-body APS-C
Hi Doug, thanks for watching and for your comment. You have some nice cameras and lenses! That is a good question about crop mode/cropping in post vs using a 1.4 TC. I think you could ask 100 people the same question and get many different answers! I don't think there is a right or wrong answer, it depends on quite a few factors and could make for a lengthy video for sure. I decide on using or not using my TC on location based on the situation I am in, various things can influence me one way or the other. However, if I am not concerned about the effect on aperture and potentially ISO, and I have time and the situation allows it, generally I will choose to use the TC. This is because I am very happy with the image quality using my TC and prefer that over cropping (I like to get my subject occupying more pixels). The Z TC I have is so good that image quality never crosses my mind when I am considering using it. If you scan the internet I'm sure you will find other people with this opinion and also others saying it does degrade image quality so perhaps something worth testing for yourself if you can. I'm very critical of my photos and wouldn't use my TC if I saw an easily noticeable difference in image quality. I do wonder if there are subtle sample variations between lenses and TCs as some people insist the TC makes image quality significantly worse but that's not my experience. I hope that helps and best wishes.
Great video. I live in St Ives Cornwall so sea birds are my main images, I have the Nikon Z6 III, and the Z180-600 but my all rounder Z 100-400 is the one lens I will never sell.
Thank you Mike for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. You have a great camera and set of lenses for your wildlife photography!
A great video and some beautiful photographs, thank you. I ordered my Z 100-400 way back when it was first announced and used it with my Z9 and, at that time, Z 7II for many wildlife shoots. I was very pleased with the Z 100-400 and produced my own RUclips video extolling its virtues - especially as a pseudo macro lens as it excels at close focussing for subjects such as butterflies, damselflies etc. The Z 100-400 was my "go-to" lens for two African safari holidays where the flexibility couples to its relatively light weight and small size were ideal. However, I was less happy with its performance when the 1.4x teleconverter was added. Back in the spring I was in a hide photographing grey-herons in flight and a guy sitting next to me had the new Z 180-500 lens and i had the opportunity to take a series of back to back photos with my Z 100-400 + the 1.4xTC and his Z 180-600 on my camera body using the same settings. I was surprised at how much sharper the images the latter produced- despite it not being an S-Line lens and that really set me thinking. I loved the 100-400 but was quite often frustrated by the need for that extra reach (hence the TC!) so went to my local camera store and borrowed a 180-600 for further back to back tests. These were conclusive and I sold off my 100-400 and replaced it with the 180-600 which really is an amazing lens for performance at a great price. The only downside is the loss of the close-focus advantage the 100-400 offers.
Thank you very much for watching and for sharing your experience! I’ve read many positive comments on the Z 180-600mm lens and it appears to be a great lens and offers really good value, I think it would be a fantastic wildlife lens. I have in the past wondered could there be some sample variation between lenses regarding the Z 100-400mm or indeed in TCs. As I said in the video I’m quite critical of my images and at 560mm I can see extreme detail in feathers, around a birds eye and even within the reflection on the eye. I’ve read of many people reporting a significant drop in image quality with the TC so I’ve always assumed sample variation must be the cause. Thanks again and best wishes.
Very good to see you and your production back!
Thank you very much and I hope you are doing well!
Beautiful video Wayne very professional
Thank you I'm glad you enjoyed watching.
The 1.4tc is a great addition to my kit, it works great with my 100-400 and my 180-600. Great video.
I agree about the 1.4TC and thank you for watching!
Hi! Really nice shots! I'm looking to get the same setup as you. Have you had any issues with autofocus after recent firmware updates?
Thank You for video.
Wayne, you are a lucky man. I live in a big city and I only have bricks and asphalt. My country house is located 300 km from home, I travel on weekends, and there is very little time left for photography. I spend more time digging into the ground. And the landscapes are exactly the same. There is the same lonely house and the same gate. But from your story I understand that it is difficult for you to drive and look at the terrain at the same time. Eduard.
Beautiful photos! What editing software are you using?
Thanks very much. I use Lightroom.
Amazing images! That shot at 09:07 is such a beauty!
great review thank you, im reading up as im using this lens this weekend so wanted to get first hand reviews, your one is the best one i have seen, great photos and videos also so thank you
Thanks very much Claire and I hope you get some nice photos with it!
Lovely photos of Kingfisher. Shame you couldn't have made the backgrounds a little more blurry.
Hi Wayne. Very interesting video. I've just sent off my xt5 and lenses for trade in after buying a very discounted z7ii and 24-120mm. I've definitely been bitten by the nikon bug but I'm wondering if I should stick to the z7ii and get a zf to use alongside (and scratch the retro itch) with its excellent low light capabilities or just go all in on a z8. I also do landscape and wildlife. My first lens will be the 180-600 followed by the 14-30 f4. Thanks again.
Hi Craig, thanks for watching. The Z 24-120mm is a great lens and the Z7 II is a great camera for landscapes. I don't have a lot of experience with the Z7 II for wildlife but I suspect it's absolutely fine for static/slower moving wildlife and generally wildlife which is "easier" to photograph. A Z8 would clearly have better AF for wildlife but it really depends on your needs. I can't comment on the ZF as I haven't used one. Good luck.
@@WayneRobertsonPhotography thanks for the reply. Lots to think about. Either way keep the videos coming.
Brilliant review! Honest opinion with the images to back it up!
The testing was done using an XT-3. I would think that results should be similar using XH-1. I was looking specifically for a video showcasing the 150-600mm with the XT-3 or XH-1, and I highly recommend that you should put the camera used in the video description. After having viewed this video, I am extremely interested in this lens as a future purchase, for use with my XH-1. Thank You for producing such a good and informative video presentation.
I’m trying to do macro photography. I have a nikon z5, with a nikkor 24-200 zoom lens. My shutter release doesn’t work past 70mm zoom. Why can’t I do macro at full zoom?
Amazing 🤩
Just discovered your channel. I really like the image quality of this video. May I ask which camera and lens you used for this?
Is this lens scratch resistant?
Is the built of the lens scratch resistant?
I'm sorry that you went through this, but since you have decided to leave Fuji, you should have talked about the problems specifically because others might be having them and potential customers can know what to look out for. Sometimes, you should use your platform to make a change in the way a business does business and let Fuji know that you aren't happy through a video, by getting tons of views from it and letting Fuji know, can but not always make a change. You did the right thing at first, going to Fuji before discussing it. You have given them the opportunity, and if enough people see this and are having issues, they will lobby Fuji for a change. Businesses have customers and angry customers going viral, causes changes. I wish you well with your next camera purchase and I hope that you don't have problems. Good luck.
Thank you for your kind wishes I appreciate it.
I am sorry to hear that you have had problems with your camera repairs. Fortunately I haven't had any problems with my Fujifilm equipment, but even so I understand your frustration with your experiences. Hopefully, you will have better experiences with your new camera system.
Thank you Catherine I appreciate that.
Since more than three years I am trying to make good bird photos with my X-T3 and my 100-400mm, but unfortunately I don't succeed. I tried everything: fast shutter speed, low ISO, stepping down the aperture, having a stable position. But the majority of my photos have bad image quality. Very mushy, not sharp and crisp at all. Is it 'dirty' air, is it the bad autofocus of the X-T3, is it too much zooming in, or - that is my question - is my 100-400 a bad sample? I really tend to this explanation. (I had another sample of the this lens and it was the same). I hope you can tell me: No, you just have to do this and that and then everything will be fine.
I'm afraid I can't provide a simple answer which will fix your issues. The X-T3 is not nearly as capable as other cameras for birds in flight. However it can take good photos in that situation and it is capable for stationary birds. The 100-400mm lens that I had was suitable for the aforementioned situations. I would take some simple test shots at home (not of wildlife) to verify if your lens is performing as you'd expect. If you are not getting good quality photos in a simple situation like that then I'd try contacting Fuji for help.
You are very naive if you think you will get better service from other systems
Are you satisfied with Z8 at 14bit 45.7mp versus gfx at 16bit and 102mp for dynamic range, colour rendering and image quality?
I didn’t have a 102MP GFX so I can’t compare to that camera. I imagine 99% of photographers would be happy with the Z8 and some quality lenses is the best thought that I can offer.
Hi, The low res. Viewfinder and screen are enough to show taken photograph? The image quality is good enough at 14bit 45.7mp for large print to see details? I owned Sony a1 but didn’t like colours, and my GFX100S is not versatile specially with bulky lenses. I love image quality by my Gfx at 16bit and 102mp but unfortunately it’s good for studio and landscape only and not for all types of photography! The only thing that I’m afraid if I switch to Z8 is image quality since I’m pixel peeping person. Please let me know your opinion. Thank you
I hope this video will be a reason for a big review of the Fuji's customer support at your location... that's insane. Hope your transition will bring you good (and new, which is also important) experience.
Thank you.
I just got mine in a couple weeks ago and it just seems so.... soft. That's even at a shutter speed of 2,000. Do bad copies of these go around, should I exchange it or is it my technique somehow? I have no idea how you shot a shutter speed of 160 at 600mm!
In theory there could be bad copies of any lens, this lens should definitely be sharp. I’d do some careful tests by taking pictures of something stationary using a tripod. That should produce sharp images so will help you determine the issue.
@@WayneRobertsonPhotography maybe I’m expecting too much from this lens? Do I need to be pretty close to these birds for really sharp photographs of them?
@jimk8353 the larger the subject is in your frame the more detail you will see however if conditions are suitable a scene or subject can be far away and still be sharp. I personally try to maintain some reasonable distance from wildlife to avoid bothering what I’m photographing. If any other lenses you may have are fine then you may want to get this one checked.
@@WayneRobertsonPhotography Thanks, Wayne! What would you consider a reasonable distance for a nice sharp frame of the subject? 10meters? 5 meters?
Great video! What about image quality using the 1.4 coverter?
Thanks for the video I found it extremely informative.
Some cracking images Wanye, awesome piece of kit, I am torn between that and the Tamron 150-500, thanks for sharing.
I've been a Fujifilm shooter for over a decade, Nikon before that. If I were ever to leave Fuji, this would be why. Their service doesn't hold a candle to NPS. You'd have had a loaner in 2 days from Nikon while waiting on your repair.
Nice images ! The lilac flowers are Cuckooflower & the pink Bluebells are the Spanish variety .
I’ve had this lens about the same amount of time and was using it on a X-T3 to start with. However a few months ago I bought the X-H2S and with the 150-600 it’s just a perfect partnership. If you haven’t got one yet then I can recommend buying one. Great video and thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I also recently purchased the Nikon Z8 to basically upgrade from my Nikon D3S. I already have the F2.8 24-70 and F2.8 70-200 lenses and the 2X teleconverter, which gives me a range from 24-400mm. In order to use these two lenses, I purchased the F - Z adapter and have had great results so far. The 2X added to the 70-200 retains excellent sharpness. However, I have decided to expand and ordered the 180-600mm lens and the 1.4X adapter to push it out to 840mm. The adapter came today, but the 180-600mm lens is on back order with B&H Camera. So, I simply hope that the order gets filled soon! Hoping to have a fun summer with great photos of wildlife.
That sounds like a nice collection of lenses. I hope you get the Z 180-600mm soon, it seems like many people love that lens and it should be great for wildlife. Good luck this summer!
Great video! What kind of bag do you store that in? Or do you just keep it out the whole time you're out?
Thanks! Mostly I have my camera out ready to use otherwise it’s just in my normal camera bag.
