Dr Mike I am begging you, PLEASE review Eric Bugenhagen. I would love to see you watch his insane basement lifts from back in the day. More specifically a break down of his “I NEED A HERO!!!” video.
My favorite part of these videos is the unexpected moments of that RP Hypertrophy App ad. Has me getting my ab workout in every time I see it. Great editing!
Years ago, my buddy Max saw Kai Greene at The Coliseum gym in NY. Max is 6’2” and one of the biggest guys I know. Kai is 5’8” and Max said standing next to him was the first time he remembered feeling small.
I would encourage anyone to go to a mid to high level bodybuilding competition at least once, even if you're just the average joe like me who trains 2-3x week and is not too strict about it. You will be shocked by how large some of these guys are, it is truly jaw dropping to see how much flesh can a human being pack, and I haven't even been to a top level competition...
Hey Dr. Mike, I've been losing weight and lifting this year and just wanted you to know that your videos have helped a lot. Every time I'm at work and want to snack I drink black coffee and put on one of your videos. Having a bald monster yell at me about macros and lifting has helped phenomenally. Love you sis, bye.
Couldn’t disagree more. I max alone in my garage all the time, knowing that I can die if I’m not successful leads to success lmao (obviously a beginner shouldn’t try this)
@@BroAreWeBroingRightNowBroive done this for years lmao you know when you are failing, therefore you know when that last rep is, your body feels it !!!! Thus far its never failed me and im going on 17 years of training, I dont go as heavy as I can every session, but can rep out 315 for 10 to 12 yr around despite weight fluating lol at least Im not alone I had spotters in prison that was in 2007 ive had two spotters since then and that was only cauze i did 405 for 3 on flat
You don't need a lot of weight for Jefferson Squats. They are excellent for building the entire leg, especially the sweep. For those who can't/don't want compression of the spine, then Jeffersons are great. Give them a try and go at a slow cadence, and you will build muscle fast. I'm 61 and don't go over two 25 lbs plates per side (145 lbs), and keep in mind these are unilateral exercises, so it's actually like 300 lbs back squats. Doing 95 lbs Jeffersons for 25 reps at a slow cadence is also a cadio exercise. You'll find muscles you didn't know you had. Also they are excellent for opening the hips, take the first few reps increasingly lower until you get to your maximum depth.
I saw Kai Greene a lot after he became a sponsor of Redcon since he moved to South Florida and would train at Redcon’s gym there. He is still big as a house.
Saw Kai at the arnold a few years ago. He was standing around having full conversations with folks. He is a man of the people and seems to be a genuinely nice guy.

4:30 this actually happens to me. Whenever I tell my spotter to just hover his hand around the bar, not really touching it, I manage to do a couple of more reps. It's definitely a confidence thing.
Before I learned anything about bodybuilding, Kai is the first guy I ever saw who showed me how serious the sport of bodybuilding really is. It’s not a bunch of dumb dumbs throwing weights, these guys are pretty technical
I returned to doing Jefferson squats in September this year, and the truth is that when done properly, you don't need a load of weight. The emphasis of the movement is to maintain tension throughout the movement, so it should be applied late in a leg workout. Therefore, straps and load aren't needed, and your legs will tell you that it is time to quit.
Absolutely. I do them with a slow cadence and high reps when using 95 lbs. For those not aware, Jeffersons are a unilateral exercise, meaning two sets is one complete set. I usually have to rest between half sets. Great exercise for those like me and wants to avoid spine compression. Excellent for the entire leg/glute/hip area. As a 61 yr old lifetime natural, my thighs are a well defined 27 inches, pumped to 28+. Jeffersons are one of those exercises that you love to hate.
I did a triple this morning at 315 on incline at my commercial gym. I was pretty jazzed. I dont know which is worse, seeing Kai do a full plate more for way more reps, or watching Brian Shaw take that much and huck it 40 feet in the air.
My guess on the pressing is that the lockout is hard for him (I also struggle with it) so the spotter get him the lockout and then stops helping on the way down, lets Mr. Greene take the weight, then does it again when he gets close to the top. This would let you spend more time in the stretch and use your energy more optimally. If you insist on bench, this would let you have more weight in the stretch less in the lock out. Saves energy, allows more ROM. Just my guessing.
Just a shout out to Dr. Mike, glad i came across this channel, I've gained way more knowledge back that i had forgotten about; gotten back into training again, and already shitting on everyone else hahahaha

Hi, I'm one of the three and a half of the female viewership! It'd be super cool to see Dr. Mike critique Mitch Hooper's training since Strongmen don't get much coverage by comparison, and considering he's a science based competitor, it would be cool to see if you agree. As always, a great video DR MIKE! You’re so funny. It would have been great to have all this info 20 years ago when I started training. I tried all the normal split training (Weider), German volume, DC, what ever you think. I think Kai uses a spotter due to something (like an injury) in his left elbow… In the first part of the video (one plate on each side) you can see.
Dr. Mike, I first watched this in my 20's when me and my younger brother were just starting to work out. It's weird when you're a complete beginner you don't realise how impressive feats of strength really are. I'm in my 30's started working out again 3 years ago and still can't bench 315. I just realised how impressive Kai Greene actually was.
3:03 Not me thinking he's talking about the grapefruit video👀 Also, speaking about training in high temperatures: I used to train in my garage with minimal insulation and a window AC that didn't do much, and my pumps were consistently insane in the hotter times of the year. Did that for about 10 years and the pumps always remained the same.

Hey,Mike. I used to have a guy stay with me the whole time on my heavier sets and having that "mental" security just turned something on inside and I got insanely strong and had amazing chest development
So, with Kai's bench, the first rep looks like the hardest one bc the bar path looks way more vertical without the spotters involvement. It seems like the spotter is merely guiding the bar to the more correct path (up and back) and thus, the reps seem to get easier once that more correct path is achieved (which is key for a stronger bench).
