      I agree I’m in Kentucky and a lot of his area visuals is very similar to where I’ve been trapping over the years and I’ve tried lots of his tricks and tips and they work 8/10 times which is good odds in my opinion!

    Look, I know this is 6 years old now, but I just want to say "THANK YOU.!" for ALL the research you did, and that MOST EXCELLENT example of the Belisle 200 Mag in action as a foot hold.
    And the fact that it was short chained instead of on a slide really drove the point home.
    I remember when I handled my first Belisle having used OVC's up to that point, there was no comparison...their absolute hammers.
    If I'm in an area that thieves may dare tred, I'll stake my old steel there.
    But I digress..
    Indeed, thank you again.
    BTW - I purchased, through my local Tractor Supply, a pair of Baffin Titan for this last season's hunting/ice fishing seasons... they too are Canadian made, and an awesome boot for the 'round zero temps and stationary...and crossing streams and swamp.
    ...just thought I'd throw that tip out there.

    I have been knocking off trap shy beaver for years using the #220 set as a foothold. Setting back off of culverts and castor mounds. I originally got this idea when catching several by the tail and have them waiting for me. I use magnums exclusively.

    Thanks for letting me watch your adventure from my warm cozy abode.
    I have not seen a beaver here in south Texas since the seventy's. and the one I did see
    was shot for blocking a gravel company's water drain. We have a bunch of nutria tearing things up.

    Just wanted to say your videos are good quality. That being said I live in upstate ny and trapping regs are kind of strict. I have caught many beaver in 220's. They are effective in the right location. I mainly use 280's only because of the regulations on 330's here. But a 220 placed in a narrow run is one killer set. Keep the videos coming and good luck this season.

    Caught a small otter in a 330 crossover beaver set. Offset jaws. Had him by the neck but still VERY MUCH alive & TICKED! Releasing him w a cocking rope was a real challenge. Had to use a pole to hold his head away from the side I was decocking. He was PLENTY angry & busy trying to bite my hands off. When finally released he dove under the ice & a few minutes later while I was remaking the set he popped back up at the ice holes edge & "scolded" me quite thourally before diving back under the ice. (Alaska) I had several sets along that stream/ lake series & for the rest of that winter that otter PURPOSELY shoved sticks into my sets setting them off & pooping on the banks next to my sprung sets. Animal intelligence is very under rated!! Never did regret letting that "young one" go. Just the laughs of being otter "bushwacked" was worth it. That stream was HIS & he let me know it otter style!! Great memories!!

    thanks for posting. Dunnier's system uses hog panels instead of cattle panels. The mesh openings are quite a bit smaller. Dont know if that would have made a difference. I have never used "tripwires" on my 220s but have all my 330s set up that way. It allows me to catch any otter or muskrat that may pass through otherwise.

    ever consider making them into superbears ? Guess they'd be 44o's but I thinks that kind of a strap would be useful in some situations. ive also read where adc guys would put 160 springs on 5x5's for extra killing power do you think adding a 280 springs to you 220 would be an option ?

    • @Meattrapper
      @Meattrapper  8 лет назад

      +THE BLACK TRAPPER That's an interesting thought. I do have a couple old BMI 280's I could pull the springs off of and try them on the 220's - would be a heck of a trap for sure!

    The connibear tipped over like that works real good on muskrat on a feed pile in the fall...I put it on the side they are climbing up and haven't had a fired trap without a rat yet. Kinda cool...never used it on beaver tho.

    • @nielsonnc
      @nielsonnc 8 лет назад

      +Nicole Nielson only used a 110 with this

    • @Meattrapper
      @Meattrapper  8 лет назад

      +Nicole Nielson We don't have many rats where I am - but that is good to know that it works on them as well. Thanks for the tip! I have used 110's for squirrels but have had issues with birds landing on them and setting them off, and the squirrels using the 110 as a perch instead of going through it. Maybe your trick would work for squirrels just like musk rats. I could lay the 110 on it's side on the ground, then bait the inside of the trap with sunflower seed. I'm going to try this and see how it goes. Thanks for the tip!

    • @nielsonnc

    • @nielsonnc
      @nielsonnc 8 лет назад

      Good luck... I think it'll work... You may have some weird catches but the rats always drown...maybe chew a tootsie roll and slap it on one of the triggers hahaha

  • @duxdawg
    @duxdawg 8 лет назад

    Fantastic! Way to turn the dismal fur market into a plus. Thanks for pointing out the advantage of magnum jaws. New ways to use coni's are pure gold. Especially since in a long term grid down situation steel traps are hands down the way to go. Footholds weigh a lot more, snares are single use. Coni's work indefinitely, weigh less and catch just as much. Thinking a few 120s and 220s will keep us fed better than most other traps. Thanks again!

    • @Meattrapper
      @Meattrapper  8 лет назад +1

      +duxdawg Thank you sir. I'm glad you see where I'm coming from on this series. I've heard guys talk about using coni's for foot holds but I've never seen any sets or real life catches so I decided to do it myself and see how it works. I've got circle trigger sets out now but the weather here is in the 70's so not much is moving.
      Another thing is cost. My TS-85 foot holds not only weigh more - they cost twice as much as my Belisle 220's. I've got a lot more planned so stay tuned!

    • @duxdawg
      @duxdawg 8 лет назад

      Very cool indeed. Definitely staying tuned! Grew up on a homestead where we heated with wood and grew most of what we ate. Always loved that lifestyle. Of course whenever you have livestock, you've got vermin. After that, even living in the city or the 'burbs I've usually had some traps out. So I've been nuisance trapping since forever. Watching Dave Canterbury's vids got me thinking about the long term sustainability of trapping as he is a big fan of coni's for such a purpose. So I got my fur trapper's license a couple years ago and have been experimenting with a small number of traps, learning sets, how to become more efficient on the line, making my own bait and lures, etc. I too had heard that coni's are super versatile yet only seen typical head catch type sets. Gotta tell ya, seeing how successful they can be as footholds blew my mind! Never thought that 220 was going to hold a beaver, yet it was rock solid. Very nice. Have seen wire and paddle triggers, mostly for mink. Be interesting to see circle triggers on more species and in action for sure. Thanks and God Bless!

    last spring I found where a beaver had a hole in the ice on the creek where it was cutting trees. all I had on me at the time was a round 160 body catch. it fit the hole perfectly. I bagged that beaver. it weighed in at 55 pounds. Clean kill. right behind the ears.

    • @gunner5178
      @gunner5178 8 лет назад +1

      In locations where you have a hole or den opening they seem to just work better. They don't stand well on their own without support. The larger ones take some getting used to setting. I think due to geometry of the design.
