    It's super crucial to know everything to become a pilot and have good judgement at the same time.
    Disclaimer: This was MY checkride. I am talking about what happened in my checkride and how to prepare for yours. Yours can be different, or it can be very similar.

    You also have to triangulate two VOR's under the hood and chart it and find your position and maintain attitude, heading, airspeed in ACS standards. You will be may also be timed and will have to do it within 60 seconds. The stuff on you tube is fluff. The check-ride is way more involved.

    • @CaptainEthan33
      @CaptainEthan33  18 дней назад +1

      I don’t think you’re even talking about private because i’ve never heard of triangulating two VOR’s. Maybe back then when LORAN C was in use you’d have to triangulate that.

      @@CaptainEthan33 Look at the ACS. It has a section under navigation skills, that asks find you position using nav aids. This leaves it open. Therefore, many DPE's will test you for this item using Two VOR's to find you position on the MAP. My Friend who just got his private pilot was tested on that. He had to do tune two VOR's , and chart it on the map to find his position all while under the hood on instruments. You also have to stay in ACS standards in regards to heading, speed and so on. The DPE set a timer and he had to do it in 60 seconds. No joke. Yes this is for Private Pilot.

  • @user-jh5fm7ci6o

    The DPE is looking for perfection. You can not look up anything. You must know all the chart legends in AWS for weather charts. You can not answer a questions incorrect. The DPE will allow you to answer one questions wrong. All other questions must be correct.

    • @CaptainEthan33
      @CaptainEthan33  18 дней назад +1

      Negative. He is not looking for perfection. I made mistakes on my oral and flight that if they weren’t corrected i could’ve failed.
      Now. The DPE is seeing how you fly for the first time. The test is open book, you’re allowed to have a faraim and other resources to reference too. You just can’t google anything.

      @@CaptainEthan33 I am just telling you from real world experience from my flight school and other pilots. My friend got a disapproval because he did not know all the items in a Sigmet, Convective Sig, Airmet. He was not allowed to look up and was not allowed to look at the AWS Legend. He was issued the disapproval. The DPE said to put the FAR-AIM away as you can not use it. Yes, if you have a wrong answer, you will fail. So think before you speak. PS, there is no where in the ACS that states that it is an open book test. It does state that you can use the ACS during the test. Show me where it states that you can you the FAR-AIM and other FAA approved materials. Just saying.

    • @CaptainEthan33
      @CaptainEthan33  18 дней назад

      You're allowed to have a FAR/AIM. You shouldn't need to look up what a sigmet, airmet, etc on a check ride especially since they can be issued mid-air and if you don't know the difference it could cause a safety hazard. In that case, a DPE could tell you that you can't use a far aim to look that up.
      From MY Checkride experience. I had to open it up to look at part 43 appendix and 61.23 (second class over 40 got me confused). A DPE will make you not use a far aim if you're using it to answer every question he asks, it should be used as a reference if you need it not to refer to for everything.
      If FAA-approved material is NOT allowed on a check ride, wouldn't that make a sectional chart illegal to bring on a check ride too?
      Directly from a DPE's website - www.ryanfergusondpe.com/checkride-checklist/ scroll all the way down and you can find it.
      I'm not going to spread wrongful information about my own experience in a check ride. Especially since people at my flight school know me personally and I let them watch my videos so I don't have to explain everything to every person 20 times.
      Not all DPE's are the same by the way too. The general practice is to allow the use of materials like the FAR/AIM, charts, and other FAA-approved resources during the oral portion of the checkride, as long as it does not undermine the test's integrity.

      @@CaptainEthan33 I was able to answer all the questions in part 61 by memory and never opened the FAR-AIM or other FAA book. I answered all the questions correctly in airspace and VFR Minimum, Sectional chart questions. Then the DPE went to weather and he had me read a metar and taf, all good. He asked me the differences between Convective SIgmet, Convective Sigmet and Airmet. I knew the differences however, I did not know all of the items in a Convective Sigmet. All the items in the Convective Sig, Sig, and Airmet are listed in the FAR-aim. I only stated thunderstroms, winds greater than 50.. Line of thunderstorms, Severe weather turburlance, icing. I should of mentioned low level wind shear. Then the DPE asked me about a sigmet and I stated all the items accept for dust storms or vocanic ash. I flipped open AIM to the page quickly and he said put it away, you need to know all the items in a Convective Sig, Sig and Airmet by memory. The DPE did not like my answer for Airmet Sierra, I stated mountain obscurations, and IFR. I guess, I should of stated that obscurations are also caused by such things as smoke, Dust. and so on. He then went to the observations tab in AWS and he would not let me see the Legend. I missed the Fog symbol and mixed it up for rain. I also did not know what the haze symbol was. The He went to the observation page and will not let you look at the legend for that either. The DPE asked me about thunderstorms and told him the 3 stages. On the Mature stage he asked how lightening was created. I did not know that answer on how it was created other than the up and down drafts and electricity is causing the lightning. He issued a Disapproval. The DPE stated that I need to know all items by memory that I can not fly with the FAR-AIM. Also it may be general practice for some DPE;s to allow use of FAA materials. The ACS does not specifically state that FAA materials can be used during a check-ride. Only the ACS is permitted. I think in some cases it's good to use reference material as a checklist such as 91.13 for inop equipment / instruments so as not to miss an item.

      @user-jh5fm7ci6o 18 дней назад

      @@CaptainEthan33 Yes, that DPE allows the use of materials but the DPE's out here in southern CA do not allow the use of FAA materials excepts for a sectional chart, Aircraft performance charts.
