Congrats on the check ride, just passed mine this morning. I’m amazed at how our study material is nearly the same, I’m talking 8 of 10 pieces match identically. They work well for getting prepared. I was unlucky in that my flight school moved to a new Class D airport a week before my check ride. A busy unfamiliar airport makes for a very nerve racking check ride. Nice video, fly safe.

Great video man, really appreciate the time you put in, those laminated checklists are of your own creation? I saw them and was like “damn, that’s useful” haha
Thanks, I'm always glad to hear when someone has found it helpful. I love my checklists! I was not a fan of the way the given checklist was organized, so I created a google doc and typed everything in the format and order I wanted, spent a decent amount of time trying to organize the groupings on the page in the most efficient way, printed it, and took it to one of those FedEx printing and shipping stores (most any office supply store could prob do it too) and laminated it for about $5. Highly recommended. The side benefit is that by doing all that tedious, meticulous work of typing, creating and organizing all the things on that checklist, I naturally became more familiar with it, and the best processes and most efficient order of doing all those tasks. I decided early on in my training I was not going to die because I was fumbling around in the cockpit with trying to find an item on a 5-page checklist or looking down in my lap, so the more of that stuff I can commit to memory and make as efficient as possible, it might actually save my life.

Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I am scheduled for my checkride in less than 2 weeks....Sept 6th, and I am very nervous. My knowledge is not as good as yours so I am studying hard right now.
Yeah I was still nervous too in the weeks leading up to it like that but I just kept cramming in as much as I could. And fly as much as you can between now and then. Good luck! Let me know how it goes!

Well done. That looked like a very good checkride. One thing I would like to mention is that some examiners or DPEs might not be ok with people bringing non-FAA materials such as their own notes. I think because you really only needed them twice he was fine with it, but if someone were to use their own notes for more than that, then it might cause a problem.

Great video, and congrats on your successful check ride! Did the DPE allow you to use that folder with the notes on it during the oral exam? And where did you get the laminated check lists that you referenced/showed at 7:37?
@@Steve-kj9tx hey thanks. Yes, he did allow me to use that folder for reference, although I only need to reference it once or twice. My instructor suggested that, had I used it more often, he might’ve frowned upon it since it wasn’t an FAA official document.
I made the checklist using Google sheets and had them laminated at the local FedEx. Copy store for about five dollars. It was a time-consuming process to get everything lined up and where I wanted it right, but it also helped engrain the various steps in my brain.

Im just starting the PPL process, but I’m trying to develop good habits now and put together good study/prep materials as I learn so I won’t be overwhelmed at the end trying to cram

Thanks for posting. and congrats. Did you have to do clearing turns for all manuvers?
No, but before all of my other maneuvers I asked him if he wanted me to do clearing turns, and he said no. This is what my instructor advised me to do. If you just assume the clearing turns are not needed because you already did some earlier and skip them without asking, you could fail.
As we were training and practicing maneuvers, my instructor would “punish” me 😂 by making me do clearing turns any time I forgot to ask. After a few times of having to do those I got in the habit of asking 😂

I noticed also on your "Emergency Descent" that you seemed to have very little bank angle. The ACS states a bank angle of 30-45 degrees and maintain a positive load factor (G force). Am I missing something?
Hey not sure what to tell you there, I’d refer you to your instructor for how to approach your maneuvers but yeah, doesn’t look like I did that much banking.

was this the actual checkride or a mock, i heard you cant record real checkrides? thanks and I really enjoyed the video I am on check ride prep
This is my actual checkride. I didn’t ask if I could record it, and also didn’t try to be sneaky about recording it. The GoPro was already mounted from the flight in, and I reached up and turned it on and then got it recording as we were taxiing or doing the pre-takeoff checklist. I have “GoPro” listed as an item on my pre-takeoff checklist and may have even audibly verbalized it as I was doing it. I didn’t try to hide it at all, not sure if he didn’t pick up on it, or just didn’t care. I blurred out his face to protect him. Good luck with yours! Come back and let me know how you do!! 🤞🍀

Did u have to fly over to your instructor or did they go to your home airport where you’ve been training at ?

My instructor and I flew from our regular home airport to the small airport where the examiner was, about a 45 min flight away.
how open note would you say the checkride is?
I assume you’re referring to the actual oral exam not the practical test…. Check the comment earlier by Walker… he was one of my instructors and suggests to be careful using reference materials that are not official or from FAA sources. In my case, using my handwritten notes only once or twice was okay, but he says it might be frowned upon to use those kind of notes too much. I think the most important thing is that the examiner is going to be able to tell whether or not you have a decent grip on the material as a whole, whether you are using official sources or not, and will evaluate you accordingly.

What checklist are you using
Hey Vincent, I created my own with elements from different checklists. I didn’t like how the checklist I was given was laid out, things were just kind of on the page but were not very intuitive. So I created one the way I wanted, printed it and laminated it. All my in-air procedures are on one side and emergency procedures on the other. I’ve got another page for my preflight and ground procedures.
