During my training, there were a couple times I went to the airport and just wasn't feeling it that day. I just felt like my focus wasn't sharp enough to be in the air. My instructor liked the fact that despite having the plane rented and him meet me at the airport, I stilled called it off. He said, "The FAA and pilots everywhere thank you for exercising good judgement." Instead, we did ground school and prep for the next flight. Cudos to you for being safe over all else.

Don’t dread it. You’ll be well prepared. The DPE is not looking for a reason to fail you. He certainly will not trick you. He wants you to pass. BC 26,000 hrs and about 100 check rides, no failures.
Really honestly and truly.. there is zero pressure on you to pass. Think of it as an appraisal of the knowledge and skills you have gained to this point, we all like to think we are good pilots, if you fail or have some shortcomings these will be shown to you, which will then give you the chance to improve. The worst thing is not knowing what aspects we are weak at. So try and relax and treat it as a part of the learning process. You will however most probably pass. It is unlikely your CFI would put you forward for the GST without believing you are ready for it.
Hint for nailing your steep turns. I've tried this in the 172 and 182 and it works every time, so consider trying it in the Piper when you get a chance. When you are rolling into the turn and trimming the nose up, give the wheel 2 and a half turns. Meaning, grab the top portion of the trim wheel that's exposed and bring it all the way down to the slot twice, and then bring it halfway down a third time. If you begin your steep turns trimmed out for straight and level, then the 2.5 trim trick will hold you level at your altitude in steep turns every time. I used to balloon every time I rolled into the turns. But since I learned the 2.5, I've been solid on my altitude every single time.
Great decision making! I hope to do my check ride this summer. I really appreciate people sharing these experiences! I'm doing my solo this Monday morning so here's to us both having success!!!!

I got my license back in the 1980's. Boy things have changed since then. I had a log book, actual pen and paper. Haven't flown as PIC for decades and after this I don't want to.
Just had to discontinue my PPL checkride yesterday after the oral due to unexpected low ceilings. Was a rather difficult decision given the pressure of wanting it done. Looking forward to my flight hopefully in the next couple weeks.
Good for you to stop and discontinue. I had a similar situation that my oral started almost 3h late, when we finally started it was almost 2h from start to finish. I was spent, so I discontinued and was able to separate the oral from flight portion. I didn't feel the need to finish, cause i knew I would be so damn tired from waiting all day to start the oral portion.
If the DPE asks if you'd like to discontinue, then he/she has a concern and would prefer to discontinue. So the correct answer is yes, let's finish this up another day.

17 gusting 20 X wind, I would definitely discontinue too. Short field is extra challenging in those condition. I guess you can come in flap 20 and explain you're using less flaps for rudder authority and fly the airplane on the number. But full flaps and gusting is a recipe for failing the checkride. You can aim for the grass and slip into the landing like those professionals do but DPE can grab the control anytime and say you're not lined up with the CTR line. Alternatively, full aileron into the wind and full rudder while slipping into the runway all the way down and pray that the wind doesn't push you off the CTR line when you're in ground effect and pray for fast foot retrieval so you don't steer towards the side abruptly. Add to the fact that the sight picture will be different with a higher approach angle due to the headwind and he can say you are high and you will balloon and taking the control anyway. So many ways things can go wrong.
Thanks for watching. I put up some new videos of the time since. I did pass and took up some passengers. Please don't forget to subscribe. More to come!
I feel like this is what happens to a lot of us on checkride day. Honestly it should feel like a routine flight, but man was I wrong. I had my checkride 4 days ago and thankfully I passed. It was not a regular routine flight, I had a TFR over my airport that went away within the last 10 minutes before my scheduled time. Engine took 5 attempts to start eventually the guy had to troubleshoot it. the attitude indicator was 45 DEGREES OFF and were sitting there for 5 minutes and its up to me to figure out what to do. Me being an idiot thought I could use that as a "zero reference", man I'm glad we didn't let that slide. We just shut down the engine restarted it and somehow it restabilized. The timer wasn't starting up for my simulated XC and I should've done what I did many times with my CFI and that is just use my phone timer. The examiner was just not having it then. I was just really stressed to where I was getting slight chest pain at that point. I probably should've also discontinued and have a little redo. The only problem I had was the deadline to complete the checkride was in 7 days I was so so close and did not want to repeat a semester. Well, everyone says I am very safe I work really hard and take this very seriously so I'm still very proud even though I didn't pass with flying colors. Keep going, getting this through is worth it! I cannot wait to know what it is like to fly as a private pilot now.
Wow, sounds like you had a stressful ride. Glad you made it through, well done! Check out my new videos, took up my first passengers and I just posted one today of my first instrument approach. Hope you subscribe, I have more coming!
@@theljungholmfamily Awesome congratulations :) Now you have a ticket to learn. I recommend studying AQP for GA and listening (as much as you can stomach lol) to AQP -- Dan Gryder. There are many scenarios that he discusses but the one most important for you now is to understand base to final stalls and how to avoid them.
This is a great video. Very awesome and very good job handling the day. Very interesting, I started training at Apopka about 10 years back, that is a thin runway and to have 17 kt xwind!! but I just got my private cert in Pennsylvania last year. Its very interesting the differences between DPE's, the surprises that you had on checkride, should have been covered by your instructor, you need to ding him, he should have grilled you on the diversion. I had to do everyhting with paper, my DPE did not allow foreflight or GPS. Doing that diversion with a paper chart, was horrible. It was a hazy day I could not see my checkpoints, i was totally faking it lol. Also he made my engine out landing on a small runway and I had to hit the first 1/3 of runway, I missed first attempt and thought I failed, but he let me try again.
Thanks for watching. Can't really ding the instructor, he went over this with me. The check ride may be designed to throw some things at you and get you a but flustered, it worked! Simulating an emergency to see how you handle it. Glad to hear yours went well.
The Piper will indeed stall, power on. My DPE made me fully stall the 180. When he called out power on I said I’ve never made it fully stall. He said “ you ain’t trying hard enough! YANK it to your chest!!” Yes sir, hang on was my response😂
It's crazy how easy high air work is in a Piper. I trained in a C-150, and I couldn't believe how docile Piper was once I got checked out in it. Everything - from steep turns to stalls, and even leaf stalls feels like it's on autopilot. I imagine it's because of all that dihedral. It's so stable it presents zero challenge compared to a Cessna even, it won't drop the wing no matter how much you stall it.
@@theljungholmfamily Buffeting is not full stall, it's "a sign of impending stall". A full stall is defined as an uncommanded drop of the nose. Basically the idea is that once you've passed the critical AOA the lift diminishes, and that can be observed by the nose dropping while you're still pulling.
I've never been able to get a 161 or 181 to stall in a power-on and keep it at a max 20 degrees. I have to let off a good bit of power to make it drop.
😅 judging from the title of the video, and how you narrated the experience, I was glued to the screen to get the “I almost” part. Well done. I hope it all goes well for you. I honestly thought he failed you.
@@DaBladePwn The last 2 landings were postponed again on account of weather. So now I am scheduled for Monday. Working on a video from yesterday where I did some practice. Will be posted today.
I seriously doubt the DPE would have actually let you do a soft field takeoff with a 19 knot direct cross wind. He would have probably just failed you immediately if you said you were going to do that. I was once almost tipped over by a 10 knot crosswind, it's much, much more dangerous than a landing in similar conditions. You can't see it coming and once your nose goes sideways and the main digs in - you're done. It's crucial to have the correctly varying aileron correction from full power all the way to lift-off, and that is rarely taught or trained enough.
I would definitely get the private pilot oral guide. I had my wife reading the questions to make sure I knew what was going on. I also had a couple people give me a mock check ride. Happy to do that if you are interested.
I’m taking my checkride tomorrow and I’m a little nervous about the maintaining heading and altitude part. Was there any point where you exceeded the limit but he gave grace? I’m hoping if I go above or below 100 at any point it’s not an immediate fail. Congrats though!
It’s not just about whether or not you exceed the tolerances, it’s about whether you recognize and correct it. I know it’s nerve-racking but tomorrow at this time you will be a pilot.
@@theljungholmfamily Thank you! Your video really helped me get an understanding of what to expect and I feel more confident. I’ll keep you posted on the results!
Is the use of foggles normal in FAA PPL checkrides? Here in Iceland the examiner just told me to close my eyes and he put the plane into an unusual attitude. It seems odd to do it the other way since you're not practicing for IFR.
A certain number of flying by reference to instruments is a requirement for the private license. In fact, having the view limiting device is on the list of things to bring to the checkride, I'm not sure how this guy didn't have it.
At the end you made your biggest mistake. You implied that after competing your check ride, you would be a pilot. I counter with this….. after your check ride you would be a certified pilot. Your first solo flight made you a pilot.
I guess I would counter with this, my first time touching the controls, made me a pilot, my first solo made me pilot in command, and provided I pass my check ride I’ll be certified! Thanks for watching and for commenting
I would counter with this: you think you're a pilot, but until you fly with an actual pilot (someone who flew military or part 121/135 for decades) - you'll know not to kid yourself. You're just a dude with a plane. I had the same illusion, and a little bit of experience cured me of it. Don't take any risks, because you have no idea how big or small they are.
@@alk672 isn’t a dude with a plane that can fly it also a pilot or is that reserved for the “big boys”? Some pilots are better than others, have more experience, or more skill.. in the end, Chuck Yeager, Bob Hoover, and Neil Armstrong were all given flight reviews by someone a fraction of their age with a fraction of their experience but were nonetheless pilots.
@@charleseinarson well both me and Chuck Yeager are/were pilots, but just because we happen to use the same word to describe what we do - doesn't mean we do the same thing. All I'm saying is that it's important to keep that distinction in mind. A dude with a plane who passed a private checkride yesterday can call himself a pilot, but he needs to be very skeptical about his flying skills.
I didn’t even get to start because the DPE made up his own rule. Little did he know he ended up costing me over $10k that day from travel and loss of wages. He is now going to be prosecuted for it and reported to the FSDO. You don’t mess with someone who pays to have full time legal and you sure don’t make up your own set of guidelines.
@@jmizzonini ground needed to be logged in my log book. It can’t be printed out, can’t be stapled in, and home study needs proof of completion with a date and time of each day you did your lesson. Show me any of that in writing. You can’t. It cost me money that day. If I would’ve known this isn’t a black and white test and rules are made up I would’ve gone in differently. Passed with another DPE and doubled his pay. I don’t mess around when people mess with my livelihood. He will be paying for it.
Loll not close enough. Should have had mine at 16, but she thought I was too young. Then tried later with money issues, etc etc. Expensive and boring when all you have ever done is prepare and train. Just retire to the fsx sim. And buy nice planes from A2A simulation. Screw it. And the REX real world weather snapshot software for real weather updated every 15 min. Real to the time weather.

@@theljungholmfamily hahah tell her after all you've been through to pass a checkride, she should be ok flying with you! but sure, will subscribe to keep following your journey
For sure, luckily it was nice and calm for my last 2 landings. I added some new videos with the update. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for sharing. Good job ..... GREAT decision !!!! - You've got this -
Thanks for watching, and for the encouragement!!
Very nice decision!!
Thanks. I think i would have failed if I had kept going. The wind was just too much.
That story was intense!!!!
Thanks for watching, I hope you subscribe. I have more videos on the way I posted the video of my check ride pass, got the funny part of the end.
Thanks for such an informative video! And gosh, I'm worried about doing a checkride now HA! Sounds like you did great anyway!
Thanks for watching. Hope the video helps you on your way. Good luck!
I enjoyed hearing your experience! My checkride is next month😅
Thank you, I was very nervous about it, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be
I assumed from the thumbnail that you had failed, but it sounds like you did great and your landings should be a piece of cake. Congratulations!
Thanks for watching. I put up some new videos of the time since. I did pass and took up some passengers. Please don't forget to subscribe. More to come!
Congrat. You will get it done
Got it done a couple weeks ago, check out my follow up video, funny part towards the end. Please subscribe, more to come!

@@theljungholmfamily subscribing now! I am preparing for my check ride but struggling with Steep turns and s turns!
@@valencr2 Yes, steep turns were a bit of a pain. I found that using a lot of trim helps!
Thank you for sharing.
You’re welcome!
Well done
Thank you. Been a while since I have flown so for now mostly simulator.
Great decision-making to discontinue! Looks like everything was super so far.
Yes! And at 7am this morning knocked out the last 2 landings!
It is my opinion that giving check-rides has become so lucrative that doubling down with a student has become irresistible for some designees.
I agree, that is why I verified with my DPE. He is a good one!
The Piper will indeed stall, power on. My DPE made me fully stall the 180. When he called out power on I said I’ve never made it fully stall.
He said “ you ain’t trying hard enough! YANK it to your chest!!”
Yes sir, hang on was my response😂
Funny! I get a lot of buffeting, I guess that is considered a stall.
@@alk672 I managed to get the PA-140 to drop a wing during a stall. Corrected it with rudder
😅 judging from the title of the video, and how you narrated the experience, I was glued to the screen to get the “I almost” part. Well done. I hope it all goes well for you. I honestly thought he failed you.
Glad I could keep your attention!! I should be doing my last 2 landings on Thursday if the weather holds up! Thanks for watching.
@theljungholmfamily9630 how'd it go?
@@DaBladePwn The last 2 landings were postponed again on account of weather. So now I am scheduled for Monday. Working on a video from yesterday where I did some practice. Will be posted today.
Took the last 2 landings this morning and am now a certified pilot!
@@theljungholmfamily
Congratulations
I seriously doubt the DPE would have actually let you do a soft field takeoff with a 19 knot direct cross wind. He would have probably just failed you immediately if you said you were going to do that. I was once almost tipped over by a 10 knot crosswind, it's much, much more dangerous than a landing in similar conditions. You can't see it coming and once your nose goes sideways and the main digs in - you're done. It's crucial to have the correctly varying aileron correction from full power all the way to lift-off, and that is rarely taught or trained enough.
Yes, I think that was his way of telling me not to try it. Thanks for watching.
lets us know how the final leg goes.. good luck buddy
I put out another video. I am a certified pilot!
Im sitting here with 30 hours, just solo-ed, hopping you passed.
I did, posted another video about it. Good luck with your training and congrats on the solo!
@@theljungholmfamily thanks. Appreciate it.
Congratulations on passing! I’m currently studying for my PPL checkride. Any helpful tips or study strategies?
I would definitely get the private pilot oral guide. I had my wife reading the questions to make sure I knew what was going on. I also had a couple people give me a mock check ride. Happy to do that if you are interested.
@@theljungholmfamily Awesome! Thank you so much!
@@xyz_aviation Sounds good, remember this "critical angle of attack". That is one that i forgot during the oral portion.
@@theljungholmfamily I passed!! Thanks for the advice!
@@xyz_aviation congratulations, huge accomplishment. I was going to reach out to ask how it went. Now you get to tell everybody you’re a pilot.
Is the use of foggles normal in FAA PPL checkrides? Here in Iceland the examiner just told me to close my eyes and he put the plane into an unusual attitude. It seems odd to do it the other way since you're not practicing for IFR.
I guess it is. I didn't know that until the check ride. New video of first passengers coming tonight.
Was your dpe Kyle pack or ed
So you did not flunk your check-ride. It was a weather issue.
Yes, that is why the title was I almost passed, eventually I got back and finished it up
why the heck would you need foggles for instrument flying when you aren't going to an instrument rating?
A certain number of flying by reference to instruments is a requirement for the private license. In fact, having the view limiting device is on the list of things to bring to the checkride, I'm not sure how this guy didn't have it.
Unusual attitude recovery. That is why I needed them. Have sine purchased a pair for my instrument training.
The private is harder than people think.
Yep every pilot and cfi I spoke to told me once you get over the PPL every other rating goes by fairly quickly!
@@alk672 I’ve been there after some of these 121/135 guys get their Tailwheel endorsement and they confess that now they are a pilot.
A dude with a plane who passed a private checkride yesterday can call himself a pilot, but he needs to be very skeptical about his flying skills.
hey, any update on your progress?? Would love to know you passed.
Postponed again! Currently scheduled for tomorrow at 6 PM. Posted another video of some practice of short field landings.

@@theljungholmfamily I hope you’re going right to the instrument rating. I have told all my students it is nearly a necessity in today’s airspace.
@@arthouston7361 I am already taking my instrument ground school. I agree, very important to have that knowledge.
Unbelievable
I didn’t even get to start because the DPE made up his own rule. Little did he know he ended up costing me over $10k that day from travel and loss of wages. He is now going to be prosecuted for it and reported to the FSDO. You don’t mess with someone who pays to have full time legal and you sure don’t make up your own set of guidelines.
what rule did the DPE make up?
@@jmizzonini ground needed to be logged in my log book. It can’t be printed out, can’t be stapled in, and home study needs proof of completion with a date and time of each day you did your lesson. Show me any of that in writing. You can’t. It cost me money that day. If I would’ve known this isn’t a black and white test and rules are made up I would’ve gone in differently. Passed with another DPE and doubled his pay. I don’t mess around when people mess with my livelihood. He will be paying for it.

Yes, this one is affiliated with the school. Thanks for watching.
I whole-heartedly agree. Also, if at all possible take a few weeks of vacation and knock it out in an accelerated program IMHO.
Fly < maximum crosswind component > Don't Fly
Loll not close enough. Should have had mine at 16, but she thought I was too young. Then tried later with money issues, etc etc. Expensive and boring when all you have ever done is prepare and train. Just retire to the fsx sim. And buy nice planes from A2A simulation. Screw it. And the REX real world weather snapshot software for real weather updated every 15 min. Real to the time weather.
