you have an amazing ability to explain things...very well done. There is a lot to take away from this video. Congrats again on getting your learning ticket.
Congratulations, and thank you for posting this summary. It's very useful, actually, not just for those of us who've cheered you on along the way but also for all the student pilots looking ahead to their checkride. And welcome to the club of people who didn't have a flawless checkride -- it's about 99.9% of us!
Congratulations, well done! I recall my own PPL checkride in April '77, and after feeling pretty confident early on, I was assured I had failed when the FAA examiner asked me if I could perform a 2 turn spin to the left! I was confused by the question, as I knew spin training was not part of the curriculum for the PPL. When I answered that I was aware of spins and the recovery sequence, but had never performed one, he simply smiled, then proceeded to demonstrate one while I followed through on the controls. He then had me perform one! During the debrief, he stated although spin training is not required for the PPL, pilots need to experience the sensations and attitudes of the airplane during a spin and recovery (pull out) so as not to become terrified and possibly freeze in the event of one. I couldn't have agreed more, as he shook my hand and told me I had passed!
Congratulations on passing your checkride. The excitement and relief of stress after passing the private checkride is unreal. Have fun flying on your own and be careful out there.
Congratulations, and yeah, I wouldn’t think for that one thing would keep you from getting your PPL. Very nice. I just turned 52 and I’m 30 hours in. 73 landings, and I finished all my night stuff. I have flown in Bravo airspace Charlie airspace and Delta airspace at least 10 times. It’s been good. I feel that I’m ready to solo, but my CFI went to the airlines and now my new CFI has to start requalifying me. So after my check ride, this CFI switch is one interesting story that I’ll have for my video :-) By the way, I made a jingle for hypoxia, and I made a jingle for the different types of Fogs. Memory aid, can’t get them out of my head. haha. Maybe I should make one for a tomato flames! Congratulations again and blue skies!
Congrats! Thanks for posting your summary, it was really interesting comparing my experience with how your checkride went. I also thought I was going to fail because of my engine failure maneuver. I chose a REALLY bad field to land in. I had to dodge a tower, and there was a house... but thankfully he had me go around and I dont think he noticed. The perk of a low wing I guess?
Very useful and encouraging. I'm the same age as you and just 8 hours into my flight training so a similar situation. No ATP or career plans I just want to accomplish a life long goal and integrate flying into the next phase of my life.
Excellent! Congratulations my good man. Now, make sure you keep fly, so that you keep your skills tight! Fly well, and I wish you nothing but blue skies and tail winds!
you did great. you have a great relaxed attitude and also did it in a low number of hours. Looking forward to hearing about your flying. 6:30 heh, using Just Plane Silly as your source. 13:25 those distractions. I would've gotten strict and said "stop it" :) that's just me though. 17:55 "just relax and fly". agree with that.
Congrats on your Private Pilots License. I can still remember when I passed mine back in 1962...now I have them all. If you are just going to be a Private pilot, I urge you to also get your instrument. Again...congrats...
It was very helpful and I very much appreciate it! I started learning to fly 30 years ago and got to about 20+ hours before my logbook was completely waterlogged and destroyed. I also gained a bunch of weight and figured I'd never fly again. I have since lost 100 lbs and started training again. Your path seems very similar to mine... I want to get my instrument rating, commercial "license" and become a CFI. I obtained my 2nd class medical (to make sure I could eventually become a commercial pilot) and I am about 10 hours into my training. My CFI says I am getting close to be able to solo. I think I am progressing pretty well, but I have had some doubts: I have felt like it's going to take a very long time to get to the point where I would be confident in passing a check ride. Your video has inspired me and made me realize that examiner is not looking for perfection. They are just making sure I will be a safe pilot. That really takes a load off my mind, so thank you. By the way, I am "almost" past 50 too (just 9 months to go). :)

Come to the most densely packed airspace here in Southern CA. HA HA. It's a zoo out there. Learning how to get a radio call in edge wise to So cal for clearance into the Charlie is an art. Fun landing on a parallel runway with a jet. Caution Wake turbulence. Fun waiting for 15 min. for ground to give you your taxi clearance to run-up. Then go line up with 7 other aircraft while we wait for 6 aircraft to land. The engine is running and the Hobbs is spinning $$$$.
I can totally relate to the difficulty in the steep learning curve needed to accumulate the knowledge required to pass the tests on the way to obtaining a private pilot certificate. I started at 60 and have struggled and found that the material is far harder to reacll that when I was younger. I have paused the flight training at 26 hrs, to concentrate on my written test, but also I have realized that I need to be more patient to let it all sink in. Congrats and thank you for this video.
Congratulations on passing you checkride. I have about 18 hrs. of flight training and getting close to solo. This is inspiring and reassuring to me that at 52 it is still possible. So thank you very much!!!
Very nice telling of your experience, thoughts and reactions from the checkride. Thanks for explaining how you prepared. Hope you have many hours enjoying safe flying in the future.
congrats brother! I'm pursuing a career with the airlines or part 135. at the aget of 30 i get skeptical at times. im proud of you and thank you for sharing your experience!
@@FlyingPast50 thank you! I really appreciate it! I hope you’ll record yourself flying with your family members to watch their reactions. I can’t wait to bring my parents up myself.
This was a great video, and I really appreciate your honest and personal debrief with the good and the bad. This is a great video for those that are approaching their checkride for PPL to watch and digest.
Congratulations! I’m not that age yet I’ve been having some struggles in life trying to get more frequent training but videos like this give me a lot of motivation, big up !
I would have had a more challenging time doing flight training when I was younger. There were too many things competing for time and finances back then. I wish I had done it when I was younger just so I would have been able to spend more of my life in the sky. Keep it up, man. It's worth the struggle.
Congratulations! Thank you for taking the time to share your journey. I really enjoyed watching the times you had go no go situations. Seeing your thought process was great, I think it take courage to share those moments. Hope you continue to take us along!
Discontinued after trying to fly this past Wednesday… oral went well, but viz was NOT what was reported when we left the ground. Didn’t make the best landing after discontinuing, so I hope the guy is a robot and I can overcome that impression when we reschedule. Just have to fly better…
I would love to talk with you about your CFI and DPE. I just passed down in Oneonta. I also used Sporty’s. I’m interested in taking a lesson or two with a good CFI, especially crosswinds.
The Scenery on MS flight simulator and Xplane 11 is not so great. It's missing landmarks. It looks nothing what it should look like. Green grass looks like water. The massive blimp hanger is not there. No Pink hotel. No Main street parking with the tree I use to line up. The only thing that is correct is the taxi and runway and the position of the control tower. Guess it's good for IFR. and learning to work the radio. I fly a Piper and it does have a Piper PA-140
That's true. Sorry about that. Essentially, he asked me a question about an ELT being needed. I said "Yes. It's on the list of required equipment in 91.205" He dug deeper and and stressed "would you EVER be able to fly without an ELT". Essentially, he was looking for 91.207 which I was not familiar with.

Congratulations! Every little tidbit of information for future pilots is always worth the debrief
I was a DPE for 17 yrs. This is good information. Take some time to learn, but those goals you have are worthy.
Thank you, I will

Is PBG another closed AF Base like Griffiss? (I seem to recall there being on there as a kid). That's a flight I'll have to try sometime.
