It was also so nice to see that when I design/interact with clients it’s not too different from initial communication, info gathering, mind mapping/brainstorming. I always doubt myself a lot and have imposter syndrome up the wazoo so it’s nice to see that I’m at least doing some things right. I really appreciate too seeing how the more texture based and artisan style graphic design is done. I have always had clients more based on corporate/“clinical” type logos/identity and have wanted to dabble in more hand crafted styles. One question for you if you don’t mind; with putting client work on your portfolio. I myself include wording on my initial project estimate approval document, that it’s agreed upon that I have the right to use the work for portfolio/self promotion purposes unless other arrangements are made. Idk if this is being overly cautious, but do you, or would you recommend getting additional permission after project completion, for documenting the design process, before posting anything to social media or on blogs? sounded like you asked your client prior for permission to share the the process? Maybe only do that if sharing details like email comm, and back and forth?
Thanks Gavin! I really appreciate the kind words 🙏 For this particular project, Tyler allowed me to share every bit of content I wanted. This was something he himself was excited to see, which was awesome. It really depends on the client and what is defined beforehand or if you set those permissions/expectations. Back when I did logos and websites, I had a section in the agreement that I share finished assets on my portfolio or in the form of a case study. This video can technically be considered a case study, and I got direct permission from Tyler before sharing anything. For bigger clients who I sign NDA's for, it can be tricky. For the most part, I can share any approved work after it's gone public from the client. Additional assets/details would probably be best to get permission before sharing. Each client/project will be different. But if you set expectations and get the permission, then you're good to go!
Haha I hear ya. I used to hate Illustrator. It was so foreign to me. But I forced myself to learn it years ago. It's so much faster and easier for typography and building the initial design. I use both Ai and Ps together for almost every project though. Gotta destroy those vector graphic in Ps 😁
The design is awesome, but the only thing that bothered my eyes is the font used ,talking especially of B in bad and E in news , they look a bit cluttered if you know what I mean! The subtleties of the design process you delivered are what most designers overlook! Thank you , keep it up man! You earned a new subscriber ! PS: i design vintage tshirts
How did process between finished artwork and finished t-shirt did look like? You only said that you sent a vector file but aren't there tons of adjustments with printing shop?
Hey Dan! I don't often have my hands in the production of the shirt. I'm hired for the design. In the vector file I specify the Pantone colors I use and the mockup gives the printer the art placement and garment style for reference. Then the client finalizes the order on their end with the printer of their choice. Of course I'm available to answer questions or concerns with the client or their printer if needed. I should've covered my process on setting up the file for print, but wanted to try and cut down on the length of the video. Maybe I'll make another video on that topic. Appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment!
Hey Mark! I always start by understanding the client's needs first. What type of design they're looking for and how many designs? Based on that I come up with an estimate on the cost. For merch, the cost per design can range anywhere from $150-500+. (I'll never charge less than $150 for a design. That's my bare-minimum for simple merch designs.) The cost per design varies on the complexity. For example, it'll cost less for simple logo focused designs vs a custom illustration. Once I figure out the price based on the info the client has given me, I'll let them know. With new clients, I require a minimum 50% downpayment to start the design process. Then I require the final payment before I send any hi-res artwork. This process ensures I get paid on time, every time. And I've used Freshbooks for the last nine years to send invoices. Hope that helps answer your question!
