How I Landed My Dream Freelance Client Work

  • Let me share a story with you about how one of my crappy t-shirt designs has helped land me some of my dream freelance client projects.
    Just for the fun of it, I designed a t-shirt for a band and sent it to them. Although the design didn't get approved, it got my foot in the door. That one design turned into a new project. That one project turned into a larger project. Then that big project helped fuel my portfolio and confidence to go all in on what I wanted to be known for. With my newfound obsession with designing band merch, I did everything I could to stand out in that industry. After nearly a year of persistence and a lot of patience, I landed a massive project doing some of the biggest work of my freelance career.
    You never know where new opportunities will come from. But if you're actively putting yourself out there and surrounding yourself with the type of work you want to be known for - it will gain the attention you deserve.

    It’s so great to hear this story all in one place. You’ve been really killing it lately.

      Thanks Kyle! I've been under my rock working like crazy this whole year. Kept getting questions on how I'm landing the projects I've worked on, so I felt inspired to put it all out there.
      Keep killin it with the icon design! I think you've nailed all the recent tweaks to your brand/website. :)

    You know what I struggle with? Like, maybe I want to concentrate my work in logos, but at the same time, idk if it's pride or what, I don't wanna take down old projects that I think are good because like.............they're good lol. So I'm on that limbo.
    Just discovered you yesterday, and I'm navegating through your videos. Love your content!

      I know the feeling! I went through that same struggle when I was figuring things out. I designed so many awesome websites and logos back in the day. But at that point, I knew I didn't want to actually design those things anymore. After I pulled those pieces, and focused my portfolio around merch, I started landing those dream projects. Hope you find some good nuggets of info and inspiration while pursuing my videos. If you ever have questions, feel free to shoot me an email via my website. I'm an open book!

    This was super motivational, thanks for sharing! These are very useful tips! I'm at the very beginning of my career as a freelance graphic artist, been wanting to make a living with art since I was in high school, but waited until now- 6 years after graduating. I finally realize being excited about my work is worth taking risks. The biggest thing I took away from this video is that I need to reach out for what interests me most in the Design world. Thanks!

    hi thanks for the video, i got a lot of insights from this video. i have a question, where do you submit your design for a band? i mean, is that directly to the band's email or their label?

    • @BrentGalloway
      @BrentGalloway  Месяц назад +1

      @@RAVENOIR13 thanks for watching! It depends. If it’s a small or independent band, you can reach out to them directly. For bands that are signed to a label, most of the time, they also have a contract with a merchandise company who handle the merch designs. That’s who you’ll want to contact. Preferably an art director at the company.

    • @RAVENOIR13
      @RAVENOIR13 Месяц назад

      @@BrentGalloway How do you get the art director contact? Usually the band merch website does not provide a contact to submit the design.

    • @BrentGalloway
      @BrentGalloway  Месяц назад

      @@RAVENOIR13 at the bottom of most online shops, you can find the merch company’s name. With that, you can usually find a way to reach out to them. You can also do some digging to find a manager contact. And in some cases, it might just take some old fashioned word of mouth. Depends on the band you’re trying to reach out to.

    Great video. Working with these big band names are a huge deal! Such an inspiring story. Is okay to reach out to the band and share a work? I recently did a design for Bon Jovi? I have tagged them in the Instagram post I did.

    I'm at this point in my career where I've been contracting as a designer for 4 years now. I've always thought that a fulltime role with benefits is what I want - because that's what everyone tells me. And I know the struggles of freelancing and not being able to find clients. An opportunity is being offered to me... And I'm terrified. Because idk if I can do it. Idk if it's what I want anymore. But at the same time I think it's what I need. Even if I do it for a few years, just to get more financially on my feet. And then I can do my own stuff on the side for the time being. Gah, I'm having a midlife crisis at 26.

    • @BrentGalloway
      @BrentGalloway  4 года назад +1

      Don't be terrified-that's awesome! The beautiful thing about freelancing is it can be done on the side. Being financially stable should always be the top priority. Get more experience where you can and pay those bills! At the end of the day, you know what's best for you, so follow your gut. You can do it! 🙌

    • @ItsNat
      @ItsNat 4 года назад

      @@BrentGalloway Thanks Brent! I think one of my biggest fears is I've always been apart of a team when working as a contractor. There's a sense of hierarchy. But here it would be just me. I suppose I've always been a one man show as a freelancer... So maybe I can do it here too. I'm definitely going to take the weekend to cool it and give it some more thought. Thanks for the words of wisdom!
