Hi, we just bought our Toyota Yaris from previous owner and we noticed that sometimes it starts normally, but 60% of tries it just won’t start. We get the electricity on when we turn the key to “on”, but when we turn it from “on” to “start” - nothing happens. Sometimes it depended on brake - if we pressed it together with clutch it wouldn’t turn on, and then if we pressed clutch only it would start. But then later it happened anyway. It just sometimes starts and sometimes not. I’m talking about Toyota Yaris 1.4 D-4D from 2007., 66kW/90s. Do you know what might be the problem? Thanks in advance!
Interesting. When it wont start, is there a key symbol coming up on the dash? if so, it sounds like a security issue and the car is not sensing the key. For that you may need to get a new key reprogrammed. This sounds like a real frustrating issue. Is it one of those cars that needs the clutch pressed down to start? it may be that the switch on the clutch pedal/lever is either broken or, needs adjusting. Id look there first
Hi thanka for the video, i have a 2008 Yaris 1.0 Manual, sometimes it starts normal then at times it does not start normally when the engine has driven a few km. When it starts it starts with rough idling. I changed the fuel pump bt the problems persists.
I’d look into your spark plugs eh, pull them out and check the gaps and make sure they aren’t burnt out. Also, check your air filter to make sure it’s not blocked, good luck mate
People like to bark about how reliable these cars are but the amount of issues I’ve had with recent (directly from Toyota) Yaris’s and these older ones is crazyyyyy 🥴
You are not even lying, I'm working on a friend's car that only has a little over a hundred thousand miles and it seems like it's been one problem to another. I actually helped him pick the car out because they needed it to go to work on the other side of town and knowing that Toyota is supposed to be these indestructible engines and last forever and good gas mileage for a little car, I gave them the thumbs up when they wanted to buy the car and now I feel like an a-hole because I went with him to look at the car and gave them the thumbs up SMH
Not necessarily, once started, the alternator will help to charge the battery, but during cranking it’s not doing much. I’d suggest checking the battery health
hey did u figure out what was wrong with your car? my speedo, radio and dashboard lights are not coming up either. doors unlock normally and headlight and internal lights work fine but nothing else. thanks

I'm having a issue with my 08 5 speed Stick Yairs. Tonight. It started fine. Then it cut out completely. I thought, it threw the belt, was the battery or alternator. Even though the alternator is new and so is the battery. The belt was replaced, the alternator was replaced and battery all last year. I pulled into auto zone. They tested the starter, battery and alternator and all tested working and fine. Well, I was there. I moved the battery and it again lost complete power again. No head lights, no dash lights. But, when I push the clutch. It ingages the starter. But it tries to crank the starter even without the key in it turning it. I'm lost to what the issue it. If anyone can help. Id be grateful
sounds like you have an intermittent connection issue if you move the battery and you start losing circuits. I would try and slowly go through the connections and wiring closest to the battery, moving/wiggling the wiring until you find the exact point which makes it do it. These kinds of failures can be frustrating to find, but, if you work through systematically, you should be able to trace it down. If you are able to download a schematic of the electrical system, there is likely a complete circuit which is affected where the lights, dash etc are powered from, I would start there. Good luck mate!
I changed the ignition switch in the colon. And it's doing the same thing. When I hit the clutch. It ingages the starter. But, still no dash lights, headlight and no start. I checked the writing and nothing seems damage or broken wires. I never had a stick shift car do this. I rechecked battery and it good and fully charged. It has a new battery and alternator.
@ hey mate, I’ve looked through the schematics and there are a few common relays/connections which would be worth checking and tracing back with a voltmeter. If you can check the relay H-LP/AMT (headlight relay), that’s a good start, then work your way back. It really does sound like a connection issue, but, a faulty relay could be your culprit eh, good luck mate
My car starts but when it gets cold it cranks more. I saw on a forum that it was the fuel filter on another person's car. I'm thinking about taking my car in and demanding a fuel filter change. I also have a 2007 Toyota Yaris.
Have you checked that you are getting spark down at the plugs? Try pulling a spark plug out and ground the body of the spark plug, get someone to crank it and see if you see a spark. If there is spark, it could be fuel, so make sure your fuel pump is running and primes when you key on. Good luck bro!
Mine is showing about .322 ohms on the bottom of the relay integration. Which obviously means it's not good. I was just wondering how you knew it had to be between 100 and 300? Just curious.
I compared a good one to a bad one to get a comparison. Each coil of each relay should measure out roughly the same, is what I had found, so you’re looking for an outlier. Cheers
Sounds like a fuel or air issue if it starts then stops. I’d be checking for loose air hoses, but also, that you can hear the fuel pump prime up when you turn the key on before cranking
Mine is cranking 3 seconds and then builds up fuel pressure. Seems like it's bleeding off at a shorter time, after the engine cools off. Changed the Fuel Pressure Regulator and installed new pump with filter, same issue. Any suggestions?
Have you checked for blockages or kinks in the line? Seems weird that it takes seconds to build up, when you turn the ignition on, it should prime the pump, which should be enough for it it to start. Maybe key on and off 4-5 times and then try and start, if it still takes 3 seconds, perhaps check your plugs
