I am a friend of this family. This gentleman has the most exquisite collection of victorian Christmas decor. He also has an unrivaled passion for medieval era attire. He has such impeccable taste. Great video.
As a german this makes me very happy to see such old german christmas decorations being charished! And most of them are still made and appreciated today! Exquisite collection!
We have been decorating for Christmas for about 20 years at the Decorative Arts Center of Ohio. Our displays change each year. They are absolutely worth seeing in person.
It's hard to believe that these delicate items have survived. I can't imagine the time it must have taken to collect each of these beautiful pieces. Thank you for sharing!
My mother has one glass ornament that has been passed down from my family since the Victorian era. I remember many more as a kid, but they weren’t as protected as this particular one. I never really took an interest in it but now I have to do some research. Thank you for sharing your precious collection I would love to visit in person one day. Merry Christmas 🎁🎄
Wonderful presentation! I could almost smell the figgy pudding and was I was expecting the Ghost of Christmas Past to wink at us from behind one of the trees!
I have seen tinsil made out of lead. When I was an archivist and we would process office paperwork many of the christmas cards up to the time following WWII would have black on them. This was not indicating death or mourning but the silver used on the card tarnishing.
Beautiful and very interesting to know. I would enjoy if the camera would focus on the items instead of the whole tree which it’s hard to appreciate the molds, ornaments and each tree history time. Thank you.
I’m fascinated by the Victorian era and fascinated with royalty in general although I’m not a royalist. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert really were the perfect love story. I know she moved his desk into the room where she had hers and did her royal duties from, giving him respect by doing so. I can see how she loved him because he was so knowledgeable and forward thinking. I am at the moment reading Queen Mary’s dolls house which is incredible, every item being made by the skilled workers of the day, for instance the miniature furniture made by furniture craftsmanship, the carpet sweeper and garden tools made by the iron mongers of the day etc. This was a lovely insight into a Victorian Christmas. Thank you.
This was I think the best victorian christmas tour Ive ever seen.I loved all the displays and esp all the information given!! I really felt like I was back in those times...amazing!
This is so fascinating. One request is that you zoom in more and use a light to see the ornaments up close. It is hard to picture what you describe without seeing it better. Thanks so much!
Wow this was fascinating and very inspiring. I knew that a lot of our ornaments had a Victorian beginning but didn’t realise butterflies, paper chains, cars and houses that light up were on the list. Thank you very much for sharing XX
Thank you for showing and explaining this fabulous collection !! Would love to see some close ups added to the end .so happy you pointed out the cookie box.I have always given animal cookies too small children.
First I was looking of these on pinterest. But Now I can actualy see a video one! I love christmas vintage stuff! Very beautiful! Hope I can see them in person!
WE do a Christmas display at DACO each year - usually from late November to early January. Each year the theme changes so visitors can come for many years without seeing repeats.
Well presented. Thoughtful and accurate information. This collection is FABULOUS, and artistically superb. The museum and display play together beautifully. We will plan to visit in the future!
Thank you. We have set up displays from our collection at the museum for 20 years and the displays change each year. We are currently discussing ideas and plans for Christmas 2022.

I'm certainly happy that you enjoyed the presentation. The 2023 video of "A Homemade, Handmade, and Artist Made Christmas" is now available on RUclips.
I came upon this video and was glad I did. The presentation was so enjoyable and informative. Dr. George Johnson, do you have a RUclips channel and if so can you please post the link? If you don't have a channel you should start one. This was a pleasant end to my Christmas Day, Thank You.
I do not currently have a RUclips channel, but I have been considering one. I have two other videos from past displays. They can be found on RUclips under “A Storybook Christmas featuring A Very Brady Holiday” Virtual Tour and Curator Talk" and "Virtual Tour: A Russian Christmas"
@@georgejohnson8715 I watched both of the other videos before commenting and they were excellent as well. If you do make a channel would you please let me know in this thread. Thank you for the reply, Id love to watch quality content with you at the helm :)
First originals , then not christmas related trees but tied with winter solstice, had decorations made from straws and red yarn, what was/is our very old tradition what comes from time before christmas was even a thing. First public Christmas tree in history was put up in Tallinn / what was very important port and trading town then / and yes it was decorated with edible gifts / apples and cookies/ for town poor people. Later was used more items like nuts and berries too. From that it very quickly spread to all over the world. To have evergreen tree decorated for winter solstice is our very very old tradition what goes back to maybe before AD, it was just taken over and started use in religious context. Anyway outcome was not bad, nowdays it has got nearly back its old meaning - to bring hapiness and hope to people in darkest time of year.
Enjoyed everything. I just noticed in description that Queen Victoria's reign had the wrong date. It was 1837-1901. I don't know if you are able to edit.

Bing Crosby did a nice version

@@HeyYouShouldSmile That was added by the gentleman who did the video and I'm not sure what he used.

You are correct - have to fix it for next time.
The gift tree reminds me of the Vogue Christmas tree from the 1970s decorated entirely with packets of cigarettes 😂
Never saw that kind of tree before - certainly a strange one :-)
Does anyone know the name of the music playing?
Sorry I can't be of much help-- the musical background was added by the gentleman who produced the video.
HOW can a cardboard building safely have a lit candle in it?? The trees are scary enough, but this seems like a recipe for holiday disaster.
The German candle houses are indeed rare. How many went up in flames is hard to say. However, Trees and other candle-lit items were not lit and left alone as we currently do with electric lights. They were usually carefully watched and enjoyed for a while and then blown out.
