I think it serves a better purpose to show the fans that Fin and Rey's mutual feeling for each other is a strong and powerful friendship and not a romance. that we are reading way too far into Fin and Rey's relationship. In episode 8, for an entire movie, we are given zero evidence to support a love interest in either Rey's character for Fin or in Fin's Character for Rey. This is analagous to Harry Potter's relationship with Hermoine in the Harry potter novels.

They think it makes things “mature” and “complex”. It’s sounds great... in idea. But 90% of people who attempt to tell “Grey” stories fail because Grey isn’t ACTUALLY more complex. It’s usually just bland.
I could be wrong but I think we’ll see a lot of people who lobbe this film for what they feel like it does symbolically for things they support like diversity, feminism, animal rights, etc. but in the end, I think it will age poorly as people realize that there’s not a tua;ly anybody to care about or root for in this film. I’ve already seen people talking about how great this movie is going to “for the kids!” Because of the social agenda it promotes, but I’m like “what kid is going to want to sit through this ultra-long, tedious, boring film?”
The Grey area stuff is going to bore kids more than it bored me. Who is the villain of this film? Kylo Ren? Nope. He’s just bad because Luke failed him and then outright refused to try to make it right. So is Luke the bad guy? Nope. Yoda doesn’t think so and neither should we, apparently. He was just following the dogma of the Jedi Order and their boring and apparently misguided teachings about The Force. So The Jedi need to go away says Luke and Yoda. Except then Luke says The Jedi are just beginning.
What? It’s not more interesting because it’s Grey. It’s just muddy, tedious, and too unfocused for something that’s pure fiction and doesn’t actually matter.

JazGalaxy I don't think this one was "feminist." I had that thought about the Force Awakens after I saw it for the first time, and before hearing any reviews or anyone talking about it. This one does have the animal cruelty stuff, but I don't think that's necessarily bad. People are going to hate on that aspect of the Last Jedi because it was shoehorned in. I guess some people might get upset that diverse characters were also thrown in without any consideration for the tone or pacing, but once again, that's really more of a problem with the writing than with the idea of diversity overall. 8 isn't nearly as bad as 7 in that respect.

They had Leia flying through space as just some afterthought. It is sloppy and now it is gonna be a shit show trying to handle her character without being able to show her.

It would give a reason for why Leia wouldn't be there (they could say that Leia simply died of age or illness, but not before becoming another legend or something), how the Resistance could rebuild their numbers and military forces with new allies and their renewed vigor to keep fighting, and allow Rey and Ben to get more of a footing in their new positions as the last Jedi (who might try to succeed where Luke failed) and new Supreme Leader respectively.

Canto Bight has fuck-all going on in terms of his character since his development in that portion is completely washed away by the whole “not fighting what we hate, but saving what we love” scene, where his developed character has a chance to actually do something with that development, only for Rose to fly in at the last minute and basically say he was fine where he was at the beginning of the movie, since that’s exactly what Finn was trying to do at the beginning of the movie: save the person he loved, Rey (not romantically, at least according to RoS, they have, or at least had, legitimate chemistry and friendship). At the end of the movie, Finn has become more invested in the larger conflict at play and sees a chance to save a cause he now holds as being something he is willing to die for. Only for Rose to stop him and send him back to where he was at the beginning of the movie. So Finn never had an arc in this movie.

He lacked much investment in the larger conflict at hand and solely cared about saving his friends. Which is essentially what Rose tells him to do at the end of the movie since his action at the end wasn’t completing his arc because he was going to die, it was completing his arc because he was now invested in the conflict and was willing to sacrifice in order to protect the cause. Rian didn’t even have to set up Finn dying, he could have just put his life in serious danger to protect the Resistance and it would have gotten his growth across. But no, Rose swoops in at the last minute and tells Finn that sacrificing himself to protect a cause he believes in is stupid because he needs to be a leader or “save what he loves” (EVEN THOUGH THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT HE WAS TRYING TO DO. God this movie is so fucking stupid and that scene in particular is hilariously ironic considering Rose’s actions directly caused lots of people to die and reduced the surviving Resistance to an even smaller number.) even though the movie earlier painted Admiral Holdo’s thing as extremely heroic and great. Again, Rian didn’t need to set up Finn sacrificing himself. But he jabaits us because that’s the only thing he’s truly fantastic at: ass pulls that come out of nowhere and completely wasting any setup because having a payoff to something you set up is “predictable” in his eyes. Finn had an arc in this movie. But Rose’s dumbass line sends him right back to where he was at the start of the movie.
Don’t believe me? Then maybe consider reading John Boyega’s interview where he talks about how he was treated in the sequel trilogy, and let me tell you that he does not have nice things to say about how he felt Finn was used in The Last Jedi. Then again you TLJ fans don’t seem to care what the actors think because of course only the writers could possibly have good ideas on what to do with characters and what they’re like.

I honestly thought Laura Dern's character was the worst. How do you avoid a mutiny? Let your men know the plan so they don't panic and think you've failed as an admiral. Like what reason did she have to hide the plan from Po? he even said it was a good plan once he found out what it was. IF SHE JUST TOLD HIM, finn wouldn't have recruited the traitor code breaker, the code breaker wouldn't have told them about the unarmed transport ships and the rebellion would not be 12 people. All of that happened because she thought he was so much of a hot head that he couldn't even bear to hear her plan.

Colloid yeah but at the end of the day, She was the general and Poe’s job is just to follow orders. The plan was on a need-to-know basis and Poe really didn’t need to know.

      @chandrawagner4061 6 лет назад +10

Colloid I agree that she should have told everyone the plan and that that was stupid and cost a lot of lives. However, for a different perspective I think story wise, she and the writers were trying to teach him to wait, be patient and not be so gung-ho about "blowing things up" and being rash. It's still dumb but I can sort of see what they were going for, if you only believe in the sun when you see it, you won't make it through the night and all that jazz. It was supposed to be a learning lesson, but that probably wasn't the best time for a lesson when things were so goddamn dire.

    • @LaserBlowFish

I agree, I think her arrogance cost the rebellion enormously, but I think that was intentionally supposed to be the moral of the story: don't be arrogant and elitist and secretive, don't completely turn your back on one of your best pilots who risked their life for you just because they didn't exactly fall in line and obey every single order like a mindless zombie. This idea meshes well with how they characterized the champagne drinkers on Canto Bight as the worst people in the galaxy, as well as the general theme of portraying complex characters with their flaws and strengths. She made a selfless act in the end by choosing to be the one who stays behind, but part of that decision might've been that she was at least subconsciously punishing herself for her previous behavior.

Chris, I respect you, but I disagree with you on this one. Yes, this movie is unexpected, in the worst possible way, they cut off all interesting plot points in the movie. Who’s snoke? We don’t know. Why did kylo kill those students? We don’t know? Why is Rey so powerful? We don’t know. How can leiah use the force with no training when JJ specifically said that she had none? We don’t know. Why did kylo join snoke in the first place if he hated him? We don’t know. Why did Luke lose all hope because his student turned, but he didn’t lose hope when he fought literally the most powerful and evil being In the galaxy? We don’t know. We expected answers and we never got any, your misrepresenting lazy writing with it being unexpected. If that’s the case, i can shit on a poster board and hand it in for an art project, and i will deflect all criticism by saying its unexpected. You are completely wrong about Poe, btw. If he listened to Leia, and pulled out, everybody would be dead. He sacrificed a few bombers for the safety of the entire resistance. Also, there is now reason for Haldo to keep the plan away from Poe. If she truly thought he was a fly boy, keeping an “arrogant and hot headed” person like him in the dark is the worst possible solution. If she thought there was a spy on board, that would t have mattered because she revealed it to everyone when she started fueling the transports. A spy would be able to relay that message back to the first order in no time. That was just a classic plot hole.

So many ppl are like I cannot believe Luke tryed to kill Kylo. If you actually watch the movie that’s not at all what happens. Luke himself admits that he had a moment of darkness and ignited his saber and almost immediately regretted it and never did anything. Also it was pretty well established that Kylo was already turned to the dark side by Snoke by this point went batshit crazy and massacred almost the entire jedi academy Anakin-style and thought he even killed Luke or left him for dead. What do ppl not understand about how that would change Luke. How could anyone still be the same person after something like that. I mean com-on, Obi-wan literally dismembered Anakin and left him for dead burning to death in a lake of lava for god sakes because he turned to the dark-side. I don’t think what Luke did was unlike him at all when you really think about it.

This is my argument to "Luke killing young Kylo is butchering the character":
FIrst off, if you met 14 years old Hitler and knew what atrocities he would execute in the future, you bet your ass you'd at least be tempted to kill the boy.
Secondly, wtf why do they think Luke is some kind of perfect all round saint? In the originals there were at least two or three times he fell to the dark side. He struck down an "unarmed(of course Palpatine was armed with his force lightning but Luke didn't know that)" old man with intent to kill just because he was taunted to do so. He struck his own father out of pure rage, almost killing him in the process. It was only the Palaptine's premature taunting "DO IT" that snapped Luke out of it and saved him from falling down to the dark side. Luke is not Jesus Christ; he is highly emotional character and almost fails A LOT.
Third, it's called a fucking character arc. In the originals his arc was a journey from young whiny boy to a jedi. In the sequal series, it's his transformation from a failed teacher to a true jedi master. It's what makes him human, and not emotionless godlike character.

    • @2Pains1Love
      @2Pains1Love 6 лет назад

Varys// I also wish they flashed out more of Kylo's initial fall, and I'm assuming they are planning to make some spin off series like tv series or books on that background story (mmm money money money). But to play the devil's advocate here, it was demonstrated time and again that a force user can detect another force user from far far away, so I don't have hard time accepting Snoke could find young Kylo easily. And Kylo felt he was abandoned by his parents when he was sent to Luke's jedi training ground, and it's not entirely uncommon for kids of that young age who were sent away from home to places like boarding school or whatever to have that rage-like feeling towards the parents and the people around them.
But yeah, we could've used more background information on.....you know, Snoke. It was classic fan theory bait.

Not just the Canto Bight subplot, but pretty much his entire character's involvement in the plot could have been cut out and nothing would be missing in the story.

I assumed it was to set him up for ep. 9 as a real resistance hero. Since at the end of 7, he was still doing what he was doing for Rey, and still continually wanted to run away. I took this as his arc to really understand why he should care about fighting the first order, and why he should stop being a coward. Not just for one person (as in Ep7), but for everyone, even people he doesn't know and never will. He also finally was able to actually take down one of his fears (Phasma) which has probably given him the confidence to believe that HE can make a difference. That HE can truly overcome his problems HIMSELF and not only when people (Rey, Chewie, Solo) are around to help him.

Andrew Joseph Fabo I honestly think them teaming up would be too predictable, and they are doing something more than just good and evil. Multiple times in the film, characters reference how the war between good and evil is never-ending and that in the end, no one side is truly one or the other. So, When Kylo tells Rey that he wants to burn it all down and restart, he's not entirely wrong. The empire will always come back in some unless there is no rebellion in some way. The question is not who is good or who is evil, but rather how do we stop this war? There are no easy answers In the film, and that's why I can't wait for episode IX. For the first time in a long time, I don't know what happens next in Star Wars

13:10 something i noticed rewatching this was a bit of subtle foreshadowing they pull off earlier to this. When Kylo and Rey do the force FaceTime thing for the first time and they don’t know what’s going on Kylo says something to Rey along the lines like “how is this happening you’re not doing this, if you were you’d be dead”. Thought that was a pretty nice plant there in the dialogue, which the dialogue in this movie is pretty underrated in my opinion, especially for a Star Wars movie

somerandomname Marvel has like 10 different movies in production, its impossible to get all its writers together, even then there is no reason to connect the Ant-man branch to Black Panther to gotg, the franchise can afford inconsistency, While Starwars which only gets yearly movies but only the odd number of years are connected, should not be getting different writers, if they mean to have a whole trilogy that is interconected they should have all the creative team to collaborate together their plans for the franchise

lestat1886 Consider this. The First Order was able to track them through hyperspace. Something that they thought was impossible. One would consider two possibilities. One is that the First Order is utilizing a new form of technology to track them( as it turned out, they were). Possibility two is, there was a traitor in the Resistance that sold them out. In that case you would keep your plans as secretive as possible, even from Poe, who, by the way, has recently been captured by the First Order and brought back a former storm trooper, claiming he was now on the resistances side. I would be keeping secrets too.

I loved this movie for betraying my expectations.
Killing of Snoke was unexpected, and at first i was kinda let down by the fact, but then it grew on me: this will allow Kylo Ren to become a greater villain, and the trilogy shall go into a new direction, since there's no Palpatine paralel anymore.
Luke's death: i do not get why people get mad over this. He became one with the force, willingly, thus becoming even more powerful, in the words of Obi Wan Kenobi in episode IV: "If you strike me down i shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine". Also, he saw a binary sunset before merging with the force: his journey started with a binary sunset, and ended the same way, this made me tear up, it's like he visited his home, before passing away.
Rey being the daughter of nobody: i loved this. The force it's not bound to bloodlines or heritage, which is a theme related to the ending of the movie: The spark that will bring the first order down it's on the inside of the weak, the abandoned and the orphan. The force awakened, not only on Kylo or Rey, but across the galaxy, in many places. The force is not for Jedi or Sith, for it binds the universe together and it's inside every living thing.

So you want him to be naked too? Cause his clothes certainly were never alive.
The ghosts are projections of the Jedi. That's why Anakin doesn't look all mangled, even with the original Anakin force ghost. He came back as his younger, healthier self. They make them look how they want to look. If Yoda wants a cane he can have a god damn cane.

This wasn't a bad movie, but it was far from great. It had amazing moments like the Rey/Ren vs guards scene and the Admiral crashing into the ship, but what they did with Finn in this film was just unacceptable to me. They developed him into such a great character in the first film, then in this one he is sidelined and used only to make some love triangle noone seems to care about. Rose's entire purpose in this film was to be the other love interest, and I feel that if they left her out, they could have done something better developing Finn's character as well as Phasma, who was once again very irrelevant in this film.

From what I saw, Finn's mindset at that moment was not about saving his friends. It was all about not letting the First Order win, the very thing he was determined to get away from.

I was completely fine with Finn dying in that scene. His motivation made sense and he had made up his mind. He was determined to stop the First Order at the cost of his life, and it felt like a proper way to end his character arc. But no, they had to fuck it up and have Rose do some stupid shit.

How did Maz Kanata get the lightsaber?
Why doesn't Rey need to train to be powerful?
How did Finn and Rose escape after crashing in front of the new AT-AT's?
Why would LUKE spare Vader yet try to murder his nephew AND become a recluse?
Why would Luke need to hide so deep if he could project himself all over the Galaxy?
Why would Luke bother leaving a map?
How did Leia fly like Superman?
Why wouldn't people lightspeed kamikaze earlier in the saga or more often in general?
Who was Snoke and why was he so powerful?
Where were the Knights of Ren?
I guess to know these answers we need to purchase the loot crates...

    • @ninjaplusman
      @ninjaplusman 6 лет назад +35

Some of these can be explaoned easily without the movie spoonfeeding it to you. People don't kamikazie themselves all the time because that would be stupid. You wouldn't throw your gun at everyone just because it works. Liea flew like superman because OF THE FORCE. It was painfully obvious by her hand movements that the force allowed her to do this. Luks spared Vader but thought about killing his nephew because he changed and he knew in his heart Vader cpuld change but at the time he didn't think Kylo could

The Last Jedi did not anger me as a Star Wars fan. It angered me because it made no sense and it was stupid. Rose saves Fin when he's trying to save everyone, DJ just happens to be in their cell and has a key to let them just walk out, Holdo decides to sacrifice herself only after 25 shuttles are destroyed, Holdo didn't bother to tell Poe that they had a plan, Fin drags Rose all the way back to the base in front of all those AT-ATs and TIE Fighters, I didn't understand Luke's motivation at all and what the fuck killed Luke? Then add the whole 30% subplot at the casino. It was all shit. Anyone who says otherwise doesn't have an opinion worth listening to.

I hated the kiss. It felt really trite. I agree that I think he wants it from Rey, not Rose. I didn’t feel that Rose ever really felt something for Fin either. I like be Rey and Kylo. I hope they can somehow come together to be the balance, to use light and dark but not be overcome by either. Their conversations I felt were riveting. I’m hoping in 9 that she can show Kylo what happened in his hit with Luke, how Luke felt and that he changed his mind, but it was too late. Some of the jokes felt out of place. I loved how Luke dust the dirt off, but it also felt too much from our world and not something that would have happened there. Overall I still enjoyed it and can’t wait to see it again to get a better feel for it. I also wish it had been Leia that sacrificed herself. That would have been fitting I think for her character. And maybe Luke had projected himself there to be with her in the end. I think he could have died next film since he’ll likely return as a force ghost anyway.

Alex I mean, Vader eventually died (sure he was kinda redeemed), Emperor died, Maul died, Snoke died. For me, having Ben die isn’t exciting. His character wouldn’t really have an arc, he’d just be he baddie. Having Rey turn would have been interesting. Having Ben ALMOST turn was interesting. Having them come together to start something new is something I’d like to see explored. The bad guy dying is very Disney. Maybe Rey dies next episode and that hanged Kylo. That would also be interesting. But if you want him to get his comeuppance, that’s ok. It’s just not what I would want to see happen.

But giving it back would have shown that Luke has reverence for it
He doesn't. He's completely moved on from that, he genuinely thinks after 50+ years of the Jedi screwing up and making mistakes, that the order needs to end
It's like when someone is being really really raw and genuine about something really childish and annoying and you can't help but but want to laugh and punch their dumb faces lmao
That's the vibe that I got from Luke. The Jedi need to end. He's moved on, and here comes this random chick like "pleeeease make me a jedi" and he's honestly just sick of it
