No mention of Luke Skywalker giving a wink to C-3PO. It's a beautiful moment that is very overlooked and it reaffirms that Luke is the only one who has ever been nice to C-3PO and treats him like a person.

    • @lyravega9495
      @lyravega9495 6 лет назад +4

Bikejonze That was my interpretation of the wink also. It makes sense, being that 3PO is a droid, that he would be able to tell that Luke wasn't physically there and I think Luke was trying to both tell 3PO to keep that information to himself, as well as letting him know that he hasn't forgotten him.

Any movie reviewer Disney invited to the red carpet world premiere has to be a little more lenient on the reviews they make. Especially if they ever want to be invited to the next world premiere. And it's worth mentioning that even though a lot of people ( not you ) are blaming Rian Johnson for this movie, I can not forget that Kathleen Kennedy gave the green light to all of this.

iRanger Think you need to pull you head out of Disney’s ass, the whole can’t catch the rebels 4 ships was just plain stupid!!!
1 Why did they just not realise a 1000 tie fighter and bombers, they had just crippled Leia cruiser with just Kylo Ren’s tie silencer and 2 normal tie fighters, they could have wiped them out in seconds if they had released all their 1000’s of fighters etc
2 why did they not hyper jump a couple of star destroyers just ahead and have them head towards the 4 rebels ships so they were just caught between them
3 The whole just 4 rebel ships left is utterly pathetic......by the end of the film the whole resistance is just around a dozen people who can fit on the millennium falcon..........what a poor result from ROTJ when they had a massive fleet, Disney just wants them to be the under dog again and fight the nasty new empire and ignore all the law and common sense, hope Disney just leave Star Wars alone as they are just fucking it up

Ok I retract the troll accusation, as it's clear from your reply you care about Star Wars as much as I do. I just felt this is was a GOOD movie compared to where the series had gone before the new films. It just seems to me almost nit picking to worry about some of these continuity issues, when we've got another great Star Wars movie (2 actually, though TFA I don't score quite so high due being somewhat derivative). Yeah maybe it wasnt the exact identical powers being used. But it's the Force, the energy field that binds the galaxy together, incomparable with the power to destroy a planet. You want to split hairs on how to limit it? Fine, if that's how you roll. I just think it'sa pity so many fans are beating themselves up over these kind of things.

I agree. Holdo's character pissed me off so much. There is no reason why she shouldn't have told Poe her plan. He (and everyone on board) had the right to know. They were all about to DIE... and yeah, Rose saving Finn at the end ruined that entire moment.

She should have asked him "What rank are you, and Why are you speaking directly to me?"

it will be. In my opinion this movie takes Star Wars and destroys preconceptions. It was the big running them of the movie, "let go of the past". Change will cause this. from Luke throwing away his lightsaber when handed it to Rey, to Leia pulling her self from OUTER SPACE back to the ship through the force, to the real story of how Ben turned, to he Death of Snoke, to Yoda, to Luke showing up. It shows great beats of what makes Star Wars well Star Wars but then it twists a bit and that will confuse people and/or turn them away

He didn't - The map was to the First Jedi Temple. They assumed Luke would be there.
      >>>Mind Numbingly stupid military tactics of the 1stOrder:
*3 Resurgence class stardestroyers against ONE rebel MonCalamari Cruise WTF were they waiting for?

*Where were the AA missiles turrets so smartly used in EpVII? Also,Where was the shield of the Dreadnought?
And COME ON another bloody gigantic warship with an equaly huge weakspot?
Can't really say much about this, as i'm not a military man. But I guarantee that research and reasons are all justified for these choices.
***Sir they're out of the effective range of our Weapons. Well officer How about the Micro Jum into Hyperspace ahead of them and surround them in a pincer movement?
Lightspeed/Hyperspace doesn't work like that. Do some research.
      >>>Nothing about Snoke's Origins? Amazingly powerful but can't sense ripples in the force next to his right arm?
Snoke's origin aren't important to the story. Just like the Emperors weren't in the original trilogy. Same argument can also be made about Vader throwing Emperor down the shaft in RotJ.
      >>>Where are the KnightsOfRen? MIA?
Not important to the story. They were possibly briefly mentioned though. Wait until the trilogy is over before this kind of gripe.
      >SuperspaceWomanLeia was complete BS: how about deflecting or shielding frim the missiles ?
The force works in mysterious ways. Visually a little jarring at first, but loved how it showed Leia's powers.
      >>>No problem with Ackbar being killed but let it be a "CaptainGoingDownWithTheShip" move> Hyperspace Kamikaze!
Hyperspace Kamikaze is one of the most breathtaking scenes ever movie history, let alone in a Star Wars movie. I believe Akbar dying really shows the stakes within the movie and that they're in real danger.
      >>>Finn/Rose arc was useless both caharacter cousl've been used so much better.
Granted, this story is the weakest part in the movie. But, not useless. The message Rose puts across at the end is hope inspiring, and we actually got to see other parts of the galaxy that we haven't seen before.
      >>>Phasma's appearance is an insult to Gwendolyn Christies amazing acting performances!
Hardly, she was used in a way that was essential to the story. Just like an homage to Boba Fett. Would i like to see more of her? Hell yes, but not disappointed.
      >>>How did Kylo Ren NOT notice Luke was using his old LightSaber?
All Kylo saw before he got knocked out was a bright flash of light. How the fuck was he to know the lightsaber broke? When he woke up Rey and the saber was gone. For all he knew, Rey picked it up and gave it to Luke.
      >>>Lame Marvel Jokes
Some were a little weird, but I thought it brought levity to such a dark serious film.
      >>>Disney and Rian Johnson got NO EXCUSE they Butchered Stawars!
Obviously your opinion that I don't agree with. Oh, and by the way,.....Disney FINANCED...Lucasfilm CREATED!!

    • @GeoffreyRahl
      @GeoffreyRahl 6 лет назад +1

      1) Nope Sorry mindnumbingly stupid military decision.
All they had to do was to directly target the rebel fleet instead of the ground Base. Who gives a damn abou the ground base? They were evacuating! Target the cruiser's main engine and hyperdrive GameOver. They even said they wanted to give it a WW2 feel, well, that's exactly what aWW2navalbattle would've been like: fighters protected Warships against bombers and if this wasn't enough or the ships AA guns got destroyed there was always an AA escort ship standing by.
Plus I find it laughable that as the "offspring of the Empire" the 1stOrder Navy doen't have interdictor class warships, which are still canon, able to project gravity wells and prevent the rebel fleet from escaping from the D'Qar system!
      2) Absolutely NOTHING prevented the 1stOrder from repositionning their ship to avoid the gravitational shadow of the rebel fleet and then jump ahead.
What's more it is absolutely not credible that even at "no longer effective range" the entire, concentrated power of the IstOrderFleet + Snoke's Ship the supremacy, wouldn't punch through the shields of a SINGLE rebel cruiser that's HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of Turbolaser bolt striking the shield.
For this very reason I also find laughable that the 1stOrder had to bring a mini DeathStar superlaser and fire it a CLOSERANGE too, a standard Imperial operation "BaseDeltaZero", still canon, consisted in a concentrated orbital bombardement to render a planet's surface uninhabitable.
Even from Low orbit that's from 160 km to 2000km at least of effective range for their turbolaser guns.
      3) SNOKE : Yes we needed to know more about Snoke before he got killed!
Here's why: The orginal trilogy was its own thing nothing like it had ever been done before, everything oucld be made to hte writer's liking and preferences. We got only as much as we needed to make the characters believable and to further the plot.
FORTY years alter StarWars is a well rounded, well defined, extremely rich universe, so everything new's got to be consitent with what already exists. REGARDLESS of over the top, wild fan theories and speculations there were high expectations about Snoke becuase episode VII shows us this "supreme leader" who managed to knit together the tattered and bloodied remenants of the empire and reforge it into this formidable military and political player in the Galaxy. HOW did he accomplish this? WHY?
We know he is insanely powerful, got horrendous scars possibly resulting from past encounters with other Force users or terrible creatures. He also comes form the "unknown regions" of the Galaxy and clealry stated he saw the rise and fall of the Empire. He is shrouded in Mystery and Wants to destroy Luke Skywalker so OF COURSE viewer are going to want to know more about him! Where does he fit into all of this from the blocus of Naboo to the Battle of Endor? We didn't need every detail far from it but a bit of a back story was needed to anchor the character even if "he isn't the real (main)villain" of this story or if this Trilogy does away with "Manichaeism".
We got insanely teased and then got the Galaxy's biggest case of blueballing from Disney and Lucasfilm!
      Sorry for feeling quite frustrated.
      4) KNIGHTS OF REN : Kylo Ren was supposed to complete his trainning was it too much to as for a trainning scene with all of the KoR agaisnt Kylo striving to become better and stronger after his defeat agaisnt Rey?
At least they could've been briefly mentionned as being sent on various assignments all across the galaxy.
      GIVE US CONTEXT!
      5) LEIA : The scene was visually cringy ridiculous and nonsensical. Yes, "the force works in mysterious ways" but it's not magic this is not HarryPotter "there's no accidental magic" saving you if you're in danger. Even the most gifted Force wielders have to train for years before any significant results. If Leia was trained by Luke they should've told us so thorugh another character commenting on the situation or after she woke up form her coma. GIVE US CONTEXT! Tell us however briefly you like she used the force to "slowdown her vitals" of she made a "force shield" luke her taught her that little trick years ago.
Everything has to fit withing a greater context, or it just feels wrong.
It would've been better if she'd ben picked up by the ships BioScanners as faintly but still alive > Tractorbeam > Portside hangarbay > Medical team > No problem with safety door opening into the vacuum of space because we would see her body go through the typical blue-ish hue of an atmospheric containment field.
      6) ADMIRAL ACKBAR : Though a minor character he was beloved and hsi line became famous and the center of many memes and jokes Hime taking down the 1st ordership would've been much more satifying, "This is a Trap Imperial scum". If Holdo was such a military mind Iwould''ve liked to see her lead the defense on Crait. And while visually stunning the hyperspace kamikaze raises the question of why this was never done before... against the death star for instance? Sacrifice a single ship to destroy to Destroy the Empire's war machine? Good return on investment I say.
      7) FINN/ROSE : CantoBight casino's was the perfect opportunity to reintroduce LadoCalrissian another beloved Character very good at card games and Sabbac especially.
But Nope, got arrested because they parked their ship on the beach...Duh!
He could've been in the cell with them because he was "too good a player for his own good" Casinos don't like to loose money even when there's no cheating involved... And COME ONE freeing the Racing beast but NOT the SLAVE CHILDREN?
If the slaves had exploive implants so did the racing beasts which must be more valuable to their owners than the kids. And ROSE, since she's so good with technology would've found a way to neutralize it.
CantoBight was anlso a missed offportunity to show a real firefight against Stormtroopers ans even a... Knight of Ren or Phasma an shte 1stOrder had agent everywhere and would certainly like to keep an eye on its arms dealers and main contractors. There could've been a real fight between Phasma and Finn which he would've badly lost, you know, since "this movie is about failure". Phasma must've had at most 5 minutes with epidodes 7 & 8 and they didn't even show us her face, surely they could find some gimmick to make that happen? This is a disgrace!
Well this movie failed to tell us what was going on in the wider Galaxy and fell like a "Pursuit movie"
      8) LUKE'S LIGHTSABER : Was and is GREEN as far as Kylo ren is concerned and he was traumatized by his uncle seemingly trying to murder him every last detail of that nightmust've been finely seared into his memories. Smells sounds everything, Luke projected himself as what he looked like that very night he coulnot 've possibly overlooked suchan important detail.
Plus the idiot didn't even try to apologize to Kylo and explain what truly happened? Hello?!! Way to die for nothing. I mean the guy redeemed DarthVader and he wouldn't even try to redeem KyloRen? Since this episode is all about deception, manipulations and failure why not have luke attack KyloRen in a "Mindscape" where they could've had a short but intense light saber duel showing Kylo he's stil got a lot to learn? There everybody's happy.
      9) The JOKES : Were out of tone and out of place. Stawars' not new to humour but it was in very light touches and very subtle. The Jokes as much as laughter is a matter of taste just completly destroyed high tesion scenes and dicredited the Villains. Just imagine if Frodo of Sam just quipped and Joked before or Sauron or one the Nazgûls slipped on a banana peel. It would look utterly ridiculous Comic relief is allowed but within reason.
CONCLUSION : They tried to do soemthing differrent and they tried too damn hard and they did not believe in what made the success of the original Trilogy, this is why they failed.
Still, May the Force be wth you, always.
If you enjoyed the movie good for you.

I’d love to hear your take on the prequels/original trilogy and see if you’re as nitpicky with them too 😂😂😂
Yes I enjoyed the film, there’s also another reason why I loved it, because it did something that all the other films did too......it took me out of the real world and took me on and adventure with some amazing characters in a galaxy far far away. No amount of petty nitpicking will stop that from happening.

It's really bad. For its length, it's choppy and feels rushed! Leia in space? Luke just disappearing without even the slightest explanation? Snoke and Phasma dying? The list goes on and on with weird stuff in this movie. Poe takes over the ship only for Leia and Vice Admiral to quib "I like that guy...". Kylo is the new big villian and Rey is somehow his equal? This movie is mind numbingly bad. In terms of battles it's fine; if you are a fan of lore or the star wars history this movie is like a swift kick in the nuts. I'm not even certain what episode 9 is going to be about and I've never left a star wars movie feeling that way...so poorly written. And Johnson is going to be in charge of a new trilogy? Wow.....

As someone who's a casual Star Wars fan, this film was perfect for me. I was shocked at some of the choices because the hardcore SW community don't like change. Killing Snoke off in the second act was fantastic. I couldn't care less about him, it was all about Kylo Ren's story and the twist got me, I loved it. A big complaint people had about TFA was it was too safe, too predictable. This film had more shocks, had unpredictability and the story was more engaging. Only negative was the silly Leia flying like Superman bit..... dopey.

@kristianharloff I really need you to explain to me how what RJ did with Luke Skywalker is okay! Do you truly feel that the Luke we know and love, the Luke who risked everything to redeem a man who had murdered 1000s of innocent people would just try to kill his 15 yr old nephew in his sleep??? A nephew who hadn't even turned, hadn't done anything evil yet. It's such a slap in the face to Luke and all of the fans. It's a cowardly move, and I'm sorry... that is not Luke Skywalker! It's an unforgivable move in this movie and I can't even consider it cannon 😕😔😐
I respect you so much Kristian, I have watched Jedi Council for 3 years. I can't believe you truly think those decisions are ok. I trusted your opinions and I feel you are losing some credibility with the love you are giving this movie.
The comedy in this feels like the prequels, how do you guys not see that? I wanted to love this movie, I was so hyped for this, but I just can't be Phantom Menaced again in my life.

Come out of 2nd viewing and feel a lot better about it now. Luke was really so F'd up from kylo killing all his kids, when you think about it more it does explain his state of mind now. Although we were all picturing that training montage there's no way to he was interested in training rey after his entire academy of kids got slaughtered by what he he perceives to be his own fault. He does need an arc in this movie, and he goes out the same hero we knew saving his sister and whats left of the gang. Then he knew it was his time...

You really don't know Luke. Seeing in vivid force vision Kylo killing every man, woman and child he knew and trained and all the horrible things he would do later even Luke would have a fear. ANYONE would be afraid. And for a brief moment he considered killing him in order to save everyone. It was just a brief moment and made sense.

On it's own, i thought it was a good film but seriously... Maz got 1 hologram scene, Where are the Knights of Ren? The Leia superman scene was ridiculous, Snoke's death was complete bullshit...killed out of nowhere with no given backstory and no explanation of how he was able to manipulate Ben Solo for so long...total DUD character, Kylo killed Snoke and alligned with Rey for 2 minutes to kill the guards just for them to split again and become enemies, Rey's parents were handed terriblly...just so suddenly mentioned that they're junk collecters and we STILL don't know how or why she is so powerful in the force...are we really supposed to just accept some random girl is so powerful for no reason? There was no explanation for Luke's death, nothing really happened for him to "die" in that scene and are we really meant to believe that Luke even had a moment of relapse where he was willing to kill his own nephew because he sensed the darkness in him even though he spent all that time trying to convert a fully dark Vader? come on now, Everything with Finn and Rose was pointless and lead to nothing except Phasma's death... i seriously have no idea where episode 9 is going to go from here...
But Hux faceplanting single handedly gets the film a 11/10 xD

I can't believe how disappointed I was with The Last Jedi. No matter how hard I try to convince myself otherwise it was just bad. I was going to comment on the things I didn't like but there are too many. The cinematography was great. It was nice seeing Luke and Leia together on screen again and Chewbacca was great as usual. Other than that? Not much. I respect everyone's opinion but you guys @ Collider are doing damage control for this mess. Put it this way even with all the positive spin and damage control this review still describes a bad movie when listening to you guys. Kristian is being the most real here. I really, truly don't understand why so many people are tearing this movie apart. They made brave, bold decisions and as a lifelong Star Wars fan, I couldn't have been happier. I genuinely don't understand what people are so upset about.

    • @thitran1362
      @thitran1362 6 лет назад +1

The things people are upset about is that the characters are basically throw away characters. The idea of the force in the movie was great but they threw away potential characters. Snoke died a stupid death, we know nothing of him or even cared about him. Phasma too.... she basically fight for a few scenes and then boom fall to her death. Luke was alright but I expect him to do more than what he does in the movie. Plus they set up the whole Rebels vs Empire scenario all over again!!! People focus on the mythology and stuff in the movie and forget the characters. There is little to no development of the characters.

    • @eltontaylor162
      @eltontaylor162 6 лет назад

thi tran See, I definitely felt that they took the time to develop the characters that matter. Phasma was little more than a shiny stormtrooper, so I don't feel she deserved much more. The whole idea is that in the end, the relationship betweeb Kylo and Rey is what really matters. It shows that strength when they work together. That hope that love will conqueror evil. It makes them parting as enemies more impactful and heavy. Snoke was a necessary big bad for kylo to take out so it shows that he can be redeemed. Its at least possible. Always back to the idea of hope.

As yoda said, failure can be the best teacher. As kylo described it, Luke was consumed and was set on killing him; however we learn that he hesitated and suddenly realized the nature of what was happening.. his fear of what would happen to Ben leading him to a darkness. This shift can be respected because it gives Luke Skywalker and his never-fleeting synergy with the light more depth..and you got to love how yoda so gracefully reminded him of what matters.

Hard to get excited about the episode 9 without a real badass leader running the 1st Order.. No equivalent of the emperor or Vader. Hux now seems like goof ball.. The should stop calling it the Skywalker Trilogy then... They already said that after the Skywalker Trilogy, they would go to new characters. So why not wait to do all this stuff till after these 9 films?

The main sticking points I had with this movie:
    1. Why Didn’t the First Order Fleet Destroy the Resistance Ships Immediately? The First Order Fleet clearly outnumbered the Resistance and they had a number of Dreadnoughts/Destroyers at their disposal (also the fact that one X-Wing took down a whole dreadnought was ridiculous and was done only to showcase Poe)., so why couldn't they have caught up to the Resistance much quicker? Other than that, the action was cool and the tension was high but overall it was the longest chase scene I have ever watched in the cinema.
    2. When Darth Sidious said "To cheat death is the power only one has achieved, but if we work together, I know we can discover the secret." I never realised that Leia would be the one to discover the secret by miraculously flying THROUGH THE VACUUM OF SPACE and back to the Raddus like Superman using the Force- this was the most ridiculous moment of the movie.
    3. Poe vs Holdo. This whole segment of the movie was a complete waste and didn't amount to anything significant. Why didn't Holdo Just Let Poe in on her plan from the beginning? I understand Leia and Holdo where maybe trying to teach Poe restraint but this was literally the Resistance on it's last legs and it didn't seem like the right time for moral lessons.
    4. Phasma. What a joke. less than five minutes of screentime and Disney marketed her again as being central to the story (Phasma vs Finn, Book release, Last Jedi DLC in battlefront 2). GC is such an amazing actress however she was definitely short changed as were the fans.
    5. Snoke. This was the most frustrating death purely from the fact that I feel like I wasted days reading the Aftermath Trilogy for them to suggest that he was this massive dark side presence and with RJ saying he was more powerful than Vader and Sidious yet he couldn't detect Kylo turning the lightsaber towards him?? And the fact that he's dead now means there is not much point for any further character development and he was another wasted character.
    6. Rey's Parentage. While I can accept that she came from nothing significant, mirroring Anakin's lineage, why oh why did they build up on this theory since Force Awakens? In the end it meant nothing and for me it was just another example of lazy writing.
    7. Finn and Rose. While their character interactions are excellent their whole plot in this story was completely insignificant (apart from Finn killing Phasma). They never recruited the Codebreaker they were meant too and they never shut down the tracker device. Also the whole sequence on Canto Bight was drawn out and felt like a promotion for highlighting rich society and animal cruelty (which are important) but how did this lend to the main plot?
    8. Luke. Well where do I start? For the first hour and a half I thought his character direction and portrayal was great but then I began to realise why Mark Hamill initially said in interviews that he didn't like the script; he didn't give Rey any real training, we never got to see him physically wield a lightsaber and during his fight with Kylo he's now the worlds best limbo player??, also he was able to hologram himself? Across millions of miles of space?? and create hologram dice? This is where the nature of the Force is now just a Mcguffin which can fill in crappy plot holes. Luke's death was so stupid and ridiculous considering that in 40 years of canon and lore, Luke has always been promoted as one of the most powerful Jedi etc and his story continued well into old age. But after a hologram fight he just gets tired and gives up? What a joke.
    9. Killing off 5 main characters from the old and new trilogy. This just demonstrates how the writers have disregarded fans likability for certain characters - Ackbar, Holdo, Phasma, Snoke, Luke. All deserved more time on screen. And none of these deaths had any emotional impact compared to any other SW movie or certainly Han's death in FA.
    10. Yoda appearing to Luke. While I loved Yoda's cameo, why didn't they introduce a CGI Obi Wan (they done a great job of Tarkin in Rogue One) as well since he was Luke's first mentor and arguably the one he was most attached too.
Overall I would rate it 5/10 and by far the worst Star Wars movie. It had so much potential to be great (Luke fearing Kylo which could have led him to the Dark SIde and then lead him to fighting Rey and Kylo/ or Rey joining Kylo and ruling the Galaxy vs Luke in Ep.9./ Snoke being an Ancient Sith and killing one of the main characters or having Luke save Rey and Kylo on the Supremacy). But overall alot of the plot threads amounted to nothing significant.
The movie was shot beautifully and the action sequences were great. The actors portrayal of their characters was also great. As I say, my main issue is how the plot serviced these characters. The plot was messy and lacked real direction and I think in order to simplify things for Episode 9; that's why the writers literally destroyed everything. This is the first SW movie that I was genuinely disappointed in, and its the first SW movie I have ever complained about (I love the Originals, the Prequels and TFA/RO).

You guys are losing so much credibility from this discussion. Please, I know you are Star Wars fans but you primarily work in the film industry. Surely you can see the continued mistakes of script writing and character development. How can you simply overlook the horrible story development of so many characters and just say "I loved it in the book!" That does not mean anything for the larger movie going audience. Please stop overhyping this film and admit the incredibly flawed nature of the movie rather than continuing this silly denial of the extensive issues with this film.

Daniel Meyer You are right. If you notice most critics that are giving this movie a pass have been invited to premiere showing or given a media pass in Disneycon. While the critics that are giving their true opinion of the movie are mostly small time RUclipsrs and some are even just pissed off veteran Star Wars fans. It's like an indirect blackmail. If you criticize Disney movies you don't get invited in the convention or premiere. It's getting more obvious now that Disney almost have full monopoly of the entertainment business.

It's probably a coincidence, but I think it's cool that it seems like Kylo's character is getting similar to Jacen Solo from the EU novels. How he's acting, his rage and raw emotion and his feelings towards his uncle Luke. And the force powers that Luke was using to project himself was also used in the Legacy of the Force book series. I don't know if anyone else is making these connections. But yeah I thought that was pretty cool.

I thought the same thing. And even tho I enjoyed TLJ, a part of me kinda wished they'd have been Jacen and Jaina. That storyline of brother vs sister would have had such an emotional impact.
