That's what I was going to say - 'faster and louder is better' is a very American view of comedy - and explains why a lot of American comedy just doesn't really work in the UK. Which isn't to say it's not a type of comedy that EVER works in the UK - Mrs Brown's Boys definitely uses the fast and loud format, and made it quite popular.

This episode is so weird to rewatch, bear in mind that this WAS the last episode of the show for a good 10 years, when I first started watching the show this was the last ever episode. What's funny though is that it wasn't originally suppose to be. This episode was meant to lead into the next episode titled 'Earth' which would have involved them making their way back to Earth, crashing the Red Dwarf onto the planet and killing all the remaining humans and that was possibly suppose to be the last ever episode but that was scrapped due to money so they had to come up with a different ending for this episode. They literally came up with this ending on the way to the studio. Also side note 19:15 that was apparently one take (or atleast their only good take). That test tube had to be digitally repainted in production cause they knew Danny John-Jules wouldn't be able to say that again.
The vending machine was voiced by Tony Slattery. He was a big deal in the UK in the late 80s and early 90s. Now is "back to earth". Honestly, I won't judge you if you don't watch it.
I will say that series 8 is not particularly good in my opinion, but it definitely has its moments. The 'Who fancies a kebab?' joke has always been a favourite of mine.
The idea of Death at the end was, I believe, thought up by Doug's son at the last minute (he would go on to become one of the production team on the recent series). It's so bonkers, when you look back at it. At the time Doug was planning for VIII to be the last series anyway, hoping to move on to films, so why he chose to end it on a cliffhanger is utterly beyond me. And yeah, the stuff about Talia is confusing. How did she end up there 3,000,000 years in the future? As ever, the second half of VIII is a mess of scraps of ideas pieced together when the budget proved impossible to work out. The planned last episode, 'Earth', never got beyond script stage. REALLY curious to see what you make of Back to Earth. The tonal whiplash between it and VIII is absurd.
Possibly the biggest leap of logic in the entire series (besides Lister suddenly concluding he is his own dad) is the thought process behind the virus cure. How to cure the virus? Enter a mirror universe. Next scene, they're ready to enter the mirror universe with a portal device they just built. Did someone turn over two pages at once?
For nine years this was "the End" of Red Dwarf. Leaving the story on a very bleak note, ala Blakes 7. In a way, i liked it. One of the themes that Red Dwarf pokes fun at is the bleakness and hostility of deep space. It was only thanks to the TV channel Dave that we got a revival. 🎉
I am 1 of those who loves Mac McDonald as Hollister, although his bits in the Fifth Element and 51st State brilliant too. But I did half hope at the time that the Dwarf production team could have thought to persuade Patrick Stewart in a retcon, hey I just want to see him in any Dwarf episode
I think Captain Hollister works best when he just plays things straight, like in series I. In series VIII, they have him playing for laughs and it is not his strength.
I agree with the Gallifrey Gals about the captain. He's not bad, but (for me) he works better as an occasional guest star than as a regular. I hated this episode ending on a cliffhanger! Years later, when the show returns, it's never clear what happened. I believe the guy who Cat stole the fries from is the same actor who played Dog in the reverse universe!! I saw today that Britbox (which I have) goes up to series 12!!
The ‘have a fantastic period’ scene was filmed in a set away from the audience so their reaction to the sign was not spoiled. Apparently the women in the audience were screaming with laughter and it took a while for them to calm down. But in the same way it was so embarrassing cos this probably resonated for a lot of them!!!!
A lot of people saying to watch back to earth as the director's cut rather than as a 3 parter. I say to watch it as a 3 parter because there are scenes in the 3 parter that are not in the director's cut.
I much prefer the alternate ending to the one that aired. I never really liked the 3 “Back to Earth” specials, but from series 10 things get really good again.
Future Echoes: "You can't just whack Death on the head!" Only The Good: But you can knee him in the groin. And, for over 10 years, this was The End of Red Dwarf. Like S5 and S6, another possible party-wipe ending "just in case" the show didn't get renewed and/or they finally got the movie off the ground. Except this time there was no movie and there was no Series 9. So for over 10 years, This Was It, and we were left to forever wonder what happened. There's an alternate ending that most people like better, and is over all better, but this is more of a cliffhanger so they went with this. And I'm fine with it, because Rimmer kneeing the Grim Reaper in the groin is probably the personally funniest way I've ever seen a fictional character escape "certain" death, and it feels like something only Red Dwarf would've/could've come up with.
@@phantomsidious2934 Yes it was, they were still trying to get the funds to make the movie, but neither series 7 or 8 managed to get them enough, hence the cliffhanger to try and get a 9th series.
this is the end of Red Dwarf for me! Had a good time watching the GGals react to a show I grew up on (hope they cover more shows I'm into, have they seen The Expanse?), and enjoyed all you fellow commenters pointing out all the trivia and BTS info (I didn't even know about the alternate ending!)
Series 9 does not exist. It is alluded to in the Back to Earth special, but was never actually plotted out or filmed. After Back to Earth there are the 3 Dave Seasons 10, 11 and 12 then there is the Red Dwarf Movie. Looking forward to enjoying them with you
The "message/massage" gag is pretty old, It was used in an episode of "WKRP in Cinncinnati" back in the 70s LOL! The expression on Paula's face when Kryten said "the wrong time of the month " (yeah, menstruation jokes ..ALWAYS classy). David Verrey played "Big Meat" ( the one with who Cat tried to get into a fight). He played the Slitheen' Joseph Green" in the Season One Doctor Who story "Aliens of London".
When they said they didn't like the actor who played the Captain (Hollister)... I thought they said the CAT... and I thought... WHAT??? They don't like Cat???!!!
There were originally at least 5 different endings for this. The original ending was called "Earth", where Red Dwarf crashes into Earth, causing an extinction event, and the crew goes to exchange insurance details with any survivors This would then have led to Red Dwarf the movie which would have been a reboot. Then there's the alternative ending you watched, then a shortened version with no grim reaper and then finally a version where the old Rimmer, Ace, came to save Rimmer. Ultimately, I can't remember why Doug settled on the Grim Reaper ending, but the Earth one was definitely due to budget. I am looking forward to you both getting into modern Red Dwarf. In my opinion, some of the modern stuff is as good as the classic era.
I like both endings, and genuinely aren't sure which of the two I prefer. The ending of this, and how long there was between S8 and Back To Earth does mean that when the final episode of Red Dwarf comes, I do hope it ends with a cliffhanger and "To Be Continued? The smeg it will"
there a alternate ending where rimmer found the cure and saved the ship, it has a scene where cryten say the rest of the crew are near by in escape pods, rimmer responds i see no ship onwards, it then cuts to Captain Hollister watching red dwarf fly away, personally makes more sense since they made more episodes
i had my stomach pumped after eating some bad chicken in a zoo in Peru... its a pretty horrible experience.. the pipe scraped all the way down my throat... and it was pretty big so you can really gulp or breathe properly... pretty horrendous experience... dunno if its better in more modern countries

I find it just 'eh', but weirdly, it's doing two things at once that really shouldn't go together. Though it was still nice to see the gang back together after all that time, and the forthcoming was much stronger.
The only thing I can think I've seen the captain in other than Red Dwarf is he was a police officer going through a McDonald's drive thru and gets food spilled on him in The 5th Element ( Movie) "2 golden mesls"
Have you considered doing "Blakes 7" and "Lost in Space"(1965) reactions sometime in the future great shows. Also the prisoner guy with the Cat the actor you are correct that was tbe same actor who played the Slitheen prime minister from "Doctor Who" from one of the Christopher Eccleston two-parters.
I can see where you are coming from about Hollister. I feel like in the first 2 series he was fair minded. In this series he is a joke who overacts to everything. He seems to be out to get Lister and Rimmer. I feel like he threw the book at them too hard.
The vending machine did tell rimmer that kryten had fixed the machine and followed him through the mirror, rimmer then came back through and soon after that, the machine was destroyed by the virus

Now for the genuine experience you need to wait over a decade before watching Back to Earth
And watch some Coronation Street…
😅 That candy! You two look like you're reenacting Lister eating the dogfood...
Another quality only the good cat video!
I think Mac is great in S1 & S2 when he’s playing it real. It’s the S8 cartoon character version of Hollister that doesn’t ring true.
Captain was also the actor who played the cop at the drive through of McDonald's in the fifth element
Sweet you Gals have hit 30K subscribers.
I've never understood viewers of reaction channels who would leave based on the personal opinions.
It's a wild thing to be on the other end of 😅😂
I am 1 of those who loves Mac McDonald as Hollister, although his bits in the Fifth Element and 51st State brilliant too.
Your criticisms of that actor are valid. I find him tedious.
"Having him back is such a big part of (the bad series)."
Are you sure they're saying they like him?
I skipped series 8 and 9 and picked it up again at 10.
Precisely why I advocate for the DC; it streamlines one or two moments that are painful in the 3-parter.
I much prefer the alternate ending to the one that aired. I never really liked the 3 “Back to Earth” specials, but from series 10 things get really good again.
Future Echoes: "You can't just whack Death on the head!"
Only The Good: But you can knee him in the groin.
They changed the ending to the one we got to try and get another season by leaving things on a cliffhanger, it didn't work.
@@ringod123 wasn't to get another season, the movie was the next big project
@@phantomsidious2934 Yes it was, they were still trying to get the funds to make the movie, but neither series 7 or 8 managed to get them enough, hence the cliffhanger to try and get a 9th series.
this is the end of Red Dwarf for me! Had a good time watching the GGals react to a show I grew up on (hope they cover more shows I'm into, have they seen The Expanse?), and enjoyed all you fellow commenters pointing out all the trivia and BTS info (I didn't even know about the alternate ending!)
They have not seen The Expanse. Hopefully they get around to it eventually.
We hope you can maybe stick around as we get through some of the next stuff too 😭 But we can understand if not. Thank you for being here!
Gals from the Dwarf 😂😂😂😂
I never disliked Captain AnalStir, or whatever it was.
I spent ages trying to memorise that darn word after this episode first aired. :P
Series 9 does not exist. It is alluded to in the Back to Earth special, but was never actually plotted out or filmed. After Back to Earth there are the 3 Dave Seasons 10, 11 and 12 then there is the Red Dwarf Movie.
Looking forward to enjoying them with you
Technically, this sketch is the next episode; it fits into continuity better than it did at the time. ;) ruclips.net/video/AgnkfLq-UEs/видео.html&t
CAT CAN DO NO WRONG IN OUR EYES 😭🫡
Its strange, but it seems the series continues from the alternative ending.
"Don't you want to be playing tennis alot. In tight white jeans",,,,,,
Honestly Red Dwarf 10,11, and 12 are back to the roots are are great. 9 is middling
Dont forget 13 the promised land
Totally agree about Captain Hollister. Just falls flat for me.
i had my stomach pumped after eating some bad chicken in a zoo in Peru... its a pretty horrible experience.. the pipe scraped all the way down
my throat... and it was pretty big so you can really gulp or breathe properly... pretty horrendous experience... dunno if its better in more modern countries
Great reactions gals glad ur loving red dwarf please watch the red dwarf- back to earth ( series 9 u can watch it in 3 solit episodes or a full length) and also watch red dwarf series 10
Red dwarf series 11
Red dwarf series 12
Red dwarf- the promised land ( series 13 )
Take care gals stay safe keep getting dwarfed ❤❤❤
We all have to just make it through Back to Earth... One... More... Time. Believe me... I have some thoughts.
I like Back To Earth and know others who do too.
i dont mind back to earth - not the best but not the worst (that was s8)
I find it just 'eh', but weirdly, it's doing two things at once that really shouldn't go together.
Though it was still nice to see the gang back together after all that time, and the forthcoming was much stronger.
What's the quote from the Joker? "Dying is easy. Comedy is hard."...
The only thing I can think I've seen the captain in other than Red Dwarf is he was a police officer going through a McDonald's drive thru and gets food spilled on him in The 5th Element ( Movie)
"2 golden mesls"
Well done, you made it through S8. Looking up from here!
I loved the Captain back in the first two seasons, but yes - his return has not been enjoyable.
That applause at the end seemed so forced and fake
it might be old age but really dont remember this episode but was a good one
I can see where you are coming from about Hollister. I feel like in the first 2 series he was fair minded. In this series he is a joke who overacts to everything. He seems to be out to get Lister and Rimmer. I feel like he threw the book at them too hard.
The actor who played captain Hollister was also in charge of the Terraforming colony Hadley's Hope on lv426 in the Aliens film.
and a copper in the fifth element
The vending machine did tell rimmer that kryten had fixed the machine and followed him through the mirror, rimmer then came back through and soon after that, the machine was destroyed by the virus
