If I remember correctly, Chris Morris (who played Denholm) didn't leave because of money, but because he's sort of a "restless ass", meaning that he's a creator who enjoys doing lots of things so it was not a big surprise to see him go at the end of s1 to pursue new things to do. Douglas is a great character but I've always missed Denholm 😢

Chris Morris (who, remember, you saw on Brass Eye) left during this series not because of money, as he’s never been known for greed, but simply, because he is primarily a writer and director, he just had too much work to do, such as creating his satirical movie Four Lions and directing several episodes of Veep.
Besides, as a writer and director he’s happier behind the camera because, as you’ve read here, Chris is actually quite shy, rarely gives interviews and has been described of as a hermit.

Another one for your list is 'What we do in the Shadows' - three vampires (all played by UK comedians, including Matt Berry) are living 'normal everyday' lives in New York. The scripts and the uniquely awesome way that Matt Berry delivers them will have you in stitches every time. Graham Linehan wanted Matt Berry in from the start but but he was busy on another project. Chris Morris is notoriously uncomfortable on camera and generally only appears in things he's written. It was unusual for him to be in this in the first place and I suspect he told them at the time "if this goes into a second series you need to write me out".

I really like this channel, but you need to stop questioning why things happen. It's very American to think everything has to happen for a reason, and there's a lesson to be learnt. In British comedy, things can happen without any explanation, but that's comedy. It's a break from the restraints of real life. It's also very on character that Denholm jumped without a second thought. Just let things happen and laugh.

  • @justinneill5003

Denholm is my favourite character too, he left us wanting more when he was killed off. Apparently this was because the actor Chris Morris just wasn’t available after the first episode of Season 2, because of his work on other projects. It seems Chris is as restless and energetic as his screen character, and also pretty wild in real life; in his earlier career his radio career got the chop for being too controversial, and it happened again with a TV show he was doing. Apparently the bosses at the BBC just weren’t ready for him! Denholm Reynholm responding to the police inquiry into his company’s pension fund by calmly walking over to the window and jumping out from the top floor is an image that will stay with me forever.

One of the most enjoyable things about watching your reaction videos is knowing what you are about be see in advance in the full knowledge that it will take you by surprise. Never has a character been taken out of a show in a funnier way. And you aren’t alone, he was one of my favourite characters too. On the plus side the “ prodigal sons” takeover will not disappoint.
I cannot believe we as fans of your show tried to persuade you to give it a go and a short dip in left you cold. The characters develop and in many ways improve in their own roles too as the series goes on. Absolutely they have to be watched in sequence. The whole thing is unique, different, a joy to watch and every one of the characters went on to arguably bigger things after the show.
So enjoy, you have discovered a gem for sure and happy new year to the growing Boomer clan❤

Of course in the previous episode with the theatre we saw Jay's dad (David Schaal) driving the minibus.

Checkout ''The Day Today'' with Chris Morris [ Denholm Renholm ] The reason he left the show at the time was probably to direct the film ''Four Lions.''

If you wamt more Chris Morris, yen check out Brass Eye and The Day Today.
My understanding is that he had other things he'd helped write that he was committed too, so when the show got recommissioned after its first season, he had to bow out.
But his time as Denholm Renholm was hilarious. Douglas (Matt Berry) was an excellent replacement.
Also, when King Boomer asks 'whats in the water here?' ive been to Florida, and im well aware that the answer is 'Gators, snakes and snapping turtles'. 🤣🤣🤣

Chris Morris left for prior work commitments. You have to remember that almost all of the people who worked on shows of that time had crossed paths with each other with great friendships gained. You may or may not see him again one day...
Matt Berry (Douglas) is fantastic and has been in many many shows of his own. He used to be in The Mighty Boosh with Noel Fielding (Richmond). I saw the live version in my home town many years ago and it was fantastic. You should check out The Mighty Boosh. If you like oddball humour then that's about as odd as it gets. 🤣🤣
Also if you like Star Wars and watched the series Boba Fett, Matt played the voice of the robot 8D8.

23:35 I didn't find it readily in the comments, but what you are looking to say is to quote from google
"Chekhov's Gun is a narrative principle where an element introduced into a story first seems unimportant but will later take on great significance. The principle postulates that any seemingly unimportant element introduced into a story-an object, a character trait, a backstory, an allergy-should later have relevance."
So it's not quite a rule, but it would be considered bad storytelling to introduce and focus on an object that has no later significance to the story. (Unless I suppose it's a red herring, but even that would be somehow referenced later)

Ah, the era of Douglas Renholm is upon us.
A brilliant character that adds a whole different comedic vibe to the show. Matt Berry is ace is whatever he does and his voice is so distinctive. I love his work in 'Toast of London' and he's also a talented musician with several albums of which my personal favourite is 'Witchazel' but one of my favourite songs is 'Medicine' from his 'Kill the Wolf' album.

Matt Berry is a favourite UK comedy actor - check out Garth Meranghis “Darkplace”. He has also done a few Hollywood movies ans is also in the US version of “What we do in the shadows”. In amongst all that - he is also a talented musician and singer with his own band. Chris Morriss ( Denholm ) - is also a god of comedy over here - he has written a lot of stuff , deeply dark stuff - The Day Today , Jam etc.

Chris Morris, who played Denholm, is an incredibly intelligent and well-respected satirist, writer and director here in the UK, known best for creating and presenting the acclaimed satirical current affairs shows The Day Today and Brass Eye. He also directed the film Four Lions, which I cannot recommend highly enough. I was actually astonished when he popped up in The IT Crowd because he is _such_ a comedy legend. So Chris definitely wasn’t written out of The IT Crowd because he wanted more money (lol) or anything like that. As others have said, he actually agreed to do the first season as a favour to Graham Linehan, who was a writer on The Day Today way back when.
You guys should check out Brass Eye if you have the chance - it’s pretty dark but absolutely _hilarious_ and you’ll be astonished by what they managed to get away with on network television. To say it caused controversy at the time would be an understatement!
(Incidentally, Richard Ayoade, who plays Moss, is a talented writer and film director as well. Check out his movie The Double - an adaptation of Dostoevsky’s novel of the same name, starring Jesse Eisenberg. It’s very good.)

"Maybe he makes cameos as a ghost" Naww something that crazy won't happen on a serious show like IT Crowd 😉 I believe at the time Christopher Morris was just a bit busy to continue with his role in the series it wasn't a case that he left over money or disagreement or anything. After all he was in this episode to play his role in departing 😁

Yeah it did really suck that we only got one season of Denholm. Chris Morris really made that character something else. But having other projects occupy his time, I think it's a fantastic way of staying in character for his death as well. The completely natural walk right out the window just has me in stitches xD
Was at least my favorite character in the show =)

There's actually a piece in Chris Morris' "Jam" where he recounts the time where he watched a guy commit suicide by throwing himself out of a window. A first floor window. He only fell about 20ft, and had to keep doing it until he got the required results. 😏

Barbara Reynbholm, Mr Reynholm's wife is Will from inbetweeners mom (Belinda Stewart-Wilson) so in the first two episodes of season 2 you have 3 of the 6 parents from The Inbetweeners
Jay's Dad as the driver in episode one
Neil's dad as the priest in episode two
Will's mom as Denholm's wife in episode two
Also this episode makes it so we have 2 of the 5 main characters from Mighty Boosh season one (Vince Noir and Dixon Bainbridge)
Richmond the goth in the basemont played by Noel Fielding (aka Dick Turpin in The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin, his most recent thing other then British Bake Off)
and Douglas Reynholm played by Matt Berry (aka Laszlo Cravensworth from What We Do in the Shadows the most recent thing his done I'm fairly certain)
also Moss (Richard Ayoade) plays a character called Saboo in The Mighty Boosh in 4 episodes and was the original Dixon Bainbridge in the pilot (which was remade with Matt Berry and made into episode 1)
also also The Mighty Boosh ended in 2007 same year The IT Crowd season 2 aired
