I always think that Matt Berry tries too hard as the boss. I prefer Denholm as the right character for the show. He just seems a better fit for the comedy.
I read Graham Linehans book. He said Matt Berry was first choice for Denholm but couldnt proceed at the time due to other work comittments. Chris Morris agreed to do season 1 until Matt could take over. One of the directors commented on Chris Morris coming into the show saying they were lucky to get him. He is officer class.
If I remember correctly, Chris Morris (who played Denholm) didn't leave because of money, but because he's sort of a "restless ass", meaning that he's a creator who enjoys doing lots of things so it was not a big surprise to see him go at the end of s1 to pursue new things to do. Douglas is a great character but I've always missed Denholm 😢
Chris Morris was extremely famous before this show even went out, this wasn't ever going to be an important source of income for him. He was probably just helping friends out and walked when he realized it was going to be a big time commitment.
Chris Morris probably started working on Four Lions after this. As far as I know, IT Crowd is the only thing in his career where he's played a substantial role in something that's not his own creation.
What I heard was they wanted Douglas but he was tied up so Chris Morris being a friend or something said he help so they not delay filming too much and when Douglas was free from commitment, Chris Morris went to another project or commit he wanted to do as S1 of here ended read for it or something like that
Chris Morris, who played Denholm is a *major* comedy legend and his own stuff is worth a whole series of reactions in itself. If you want to see the darkest and weirdest comedy ever, check out "Jam". Getting him for just a season was a major coup. It was about this time his career as a producer in Hollywood was kicking off too. Don't worry though, you're not *quite* done with him, and Matt Berry is a superb replacement.
Matt Berry is a national treasure, he is hilarious and an extremely talented musician. Garth Merenghi’s Dark Place (which also stars Moss) and Snuff Box are also great shows.
Matt Berry did voice work for the Spongebob movies and he was the voice of 8D8 in The Book of Boba Fett. But as another character he's brilliant in What We Do in the Shadows (TV series) as the vampire Leslie “Laszlo” Cravensworth. Also star of the comedy show Toast of London.
Chris Morris (who, remember, you saw on Brass Eye) left during this series not because of money, as he’s never been known for greed, but simply, because he is primarily a writer and director, he just had too much work to do, such as creating his satirical movie Four Lions and directing several episodes of Veep. Besides, as a writer and director he’s happier behind the camera because, as you’ve read here, Chris is actually quite shy, rarely gives interviews and has been described of as a hermit.
Supposedly Matt Berry was meant to be the boss from the start but was unavailable for the first season so Chris Morris stepped in last minute as a favor, and felt the right thing to do was for him to bow out once Berry was available.
A great introduction to Matt Berry! Another one for your list is 'What we do in the Shadows' - three vampires (all played by UK comedians, including Matt Berry) are living 'normal everyday' lives in New York. Co-written by Taika Waititi (Marvel). Chris Morris - legend - The Day Today, Brass Eye, Jam and the film - 'Four Lions' - a comedy about terrorists? Yes. And crows.
As much as you miss, Denholm, I'm certain that Douglas will become your new favourite character. The scripts and the uniquely awesome way that Matt Berry delivers them will have you in stitches every time. Graham Linehan wanted Matt Berry in from the start but but he was busy on another project. Chris Morris stepped in and, of course, nailed the Denholm character but, again, Matt Berry will blow your comedic socks off. :)
Slightly less fun fact the same actress plays Douglas' wife in a later season too, was she married to both of them or are we meant to forget she was in this episode?
"Denholm had to be killed off due to Morris' unavailability because of his work on other shows. However, Morris found the time to briefly return in a scene in the first episode of the third series, 'From Hell.'"
Bless king boomer, he finally gets a grasp on how to say Reynolm properly, after several episodes and many people breaking it down for him in the comments etc and the character proceeds to Chuck himself out of a window 🤣🤣 that in itself is comedy gold
Chris Morris is a pioneer of his craft, a true legend of comedy and satire. So influential and important. He has always led the way taking risks to achieve great things.
Chris Morris is notoriously uncomfortable on camera and generally only appears in things he's written. It was unusual for him to be in this in the first place and I suspect he told them at the time "if this goes into a second series you need to write me out".
He actually came to IT Crowd to help, to fulfill "the son's" role (as the actor was in another production and was who the director wanted from the start). Once this actor ("the son") was free, he parted his way to his own work (which, some say, he's restless).
"Salve" is for greeting individuals. For greeting more than one person it's "Salvete!" (similarly Vale and Valete for bidding farewell to individuals and groups)
You folks are genuinely hilarious and so authentic. Thank you so much for this! The Mario theme song was so unexpected and brilliant!😂😂 I am late to the party but so excited to see your older work and new work ❤
23:35 I didn't find it readily in the comments, but what you are looking to say is to quote from google "Chekhov's Gun is a narrative principle where an element introduced into a story first seems unimportant but will later take on great significance. The principle postulates that any seemingly unimportant element introduced into a story-an object, a character trait, a backstory, an allergy-should later have relevance." So it's not quite a rule, but it would be considered bad storytelling to introduce and focus on an object that has no later significance to the story. (Unless I suppose it's a red herring, but even that would be somehow referenced later)
One of the most enjoyable things about watching your reaction videos is knowing what you are about be see in advance in the full knowledge that it will take you by surprise. Never has a character been taken out of a show in a funnier way. And you aren’t alone, he was one of my favourite characters too. On the plus side the “ prodigal sons” takeover will not disappoint. I cannot believe we as fans of your show tried to persuade you to give it a go and a short dip in left you cold. The characters develop and in many ways improve in their own roles too as the series goes on. Absolutely they have to be watched in sequence. The whole thing is unique, different, a joy to watch and every one of the characters went on to arguably bigger things after the show. So enjoy, you have discovered a gem for sure and happy new year to the growing Boomer clan❤
Can't wait to see you react to the next episode. The first time I watched the first scene, I laughed so much I thought i was going to have a heart attack.
Richard/ Moss and Matt/Douglas also star together in Garth Marenghis Dark Place a really stupid surreal comedy about a hospital with loads of wierd paranormal activity
Welp, since you are about to discover the comedy genius of Matt Berry (the "Golden Child") then you might as well check out "Toast of London". Seems right up your alley!
The jump out the window will never NOT be funny. Just how casual he is about his suicide, the tiny push of the window and the hop to his death, XD Moss(repeatedly types, stares at Roy, then types again) Roy:"You LOOKED. You KNOW! Roy:"Very funny! You crazy little bastard!" "DEATH....is coming...death is HERE." That is the best funeral speech ever. They wanted Matt Berry from the start but my understanding is that he couldn't do it due to other commitments. So, Chris Morris stepped in to do season 1 and the plan was always for Matt Berry to take over from season 2 onwards.
Mat Berrry and Richard Ayoade wrote and preform in a series "Garth Marenghi's Darkplace" (A horror spoof) which is where you may have seen him before .
MATT BERRY (DOUGLAS) WAS IN "TOAST OF LONDON" "TOAST OF HOLLYWOOD" and the best "WHAT WE DO UN THE SHADOWS" COMEDY SERIES GOING INTO 6TH SEASON.👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Matt Berry did a series called 'Toast of London' which you might check out some time. In it he plays a jobbing actor and voice over artist & the show has some great moments.

Chekhov's gun is a narrative principle that states that every element in a story must be necessary, and irrelevant elements should be removed. For example, if a writer features a gun in a story, there must be a reason for it, such as it being fired some time later in the plot.
Yeah it did really suck that we only got one season of Denholm. Chris Morris really made that character something else. But having other projects occupy his time, I think it's a fantastic way of staying in character for his death as well. The completely natural walk right out the window just has me in stitches xD Was at least my favorite character in the show =)
Inbetweeners connections: Yes it is 'Neil's Dad' - (Alex McQueen, who also does a great turn in The Thick Of It) as the vicar and also Will's mum (Belinda Stewart-Wilson) as Victoria Reynholm, the grieving widow of Denholm Reynholm. Of course in the previous episode with the theatre we saw Jay's dad (David Schaal) driving the minibus.

Chris Morris is a legend of British comedy and it was a real coop for them to cast him as Denholm. I imagine they must of known it would only be a one season deal when they cast him. Check out The Day Today, Jam, Nathan Barely or Brass Eye if you want to see more of his work.
I wanted to say before, but I had a feeling that you were finally going to get the name right just as he was written out and you haven't disappointed! This sort of natural comedy timing is a joy to see. :)
everything happens for a reason, unless it's a Seagal movie. Then it just happens to get you closer to that magical 90 minute mark,so he can pick-up his paycheck.
Matt Berry is a favourite UK comedy actor - check out Garth Meranghis “Darkplace”. He has also done a few Hollywood movies ans is also in the US version of “What we do in the shadows”. In amongst all that - he is also a talented musician and singer with his own band. Chris Morriss ( Denholm ) - is also a god of comedy over here - he has written a lot of stuff , deeply dark stuff - The Day Today , Jam etc.
I absolutely loved the lead up to the window scene after at 3:56 you said renholm should run for president as he is less crazy then anyone else you've had. knowing full well what was coming :')
i highly doubt Denholm was killed off due to any issues, he was good friends with the shows producer they worked on most of Chris Morris stuff together.
Queen boomer is right . In our school in Ireland when I was 13,14 or 15 there could be 5 to 10 people sharing a cigarette in the toilets during classes 😂😂
Matt Berry now steals the show. The private exercise club episode is epic! Matt also has a comedy shows of is own, the Toast of Londow is very funny and is about voice-overs funnily enough!
The guy who played Denham was Chris Morris, a British comedy legend, creator of The Day Today/Brass Eye plus some amazing movies he's written and directed.
Ah, the era of Douglas Renholm is upon us. A brilliant character that adds a whole different comedic vibe to the show. Matt Berry is ace is whatever he does and his voice is so distinctive. I love his work in 'Toast of London' and he's also a talented musician with several albums of which my personal favourite is 'Witchazel' but one of my favourite songs is 'Medicine' from his 'Kill the Wolf' album.
We smoked in girls bathroom in high school. So much, that teachers never used it!!!! In wood shop we'd light a cig, put it in a locker under work tables, and take turns smoking it!!! While others in class were making pipes on wood sanders, drill presses, etc.!!!😄😄😄😅😂😅😂😂😂
If you wamt more Chris Morris, yen check out Brass Eye and The Day Today. My understanding is that he had other things he'd helped write that he was committed too, so when the show got recommissioned after its first season, he had to bow out. But his time as Denholm Renholm was hilarious. Douglas (Matt Berry) was an excellent replacement. Also, when King Boomer asks 'whats in the water here?' ive been to Florida, and im well aware that the answer is 'Gators, snakes and snapping turtles'. 🤣🤣🤣
Matt Berry did voice characters from tv shows and movies, but no games uptil know. He is credited as Software engineer or part of Technician team with some.
Douglas won't disappoint you. In a future episode called Bad Boys that scene with Ben Genderson - honestly, I must've watched that a dozen times recently - it always cracks me up. "Let the revels begin!" 😆
Matt Berry also appears in the sci fi classic 'Moon', 'The Mighty Boosh', He plays Bubbles in SpongeBob Squarepants Sponge Out of Water, Don Keystone in Worms: Revolution, and Prince Merkimer in Disenchantment amongst many other shows and games. Chris Morris (Denholm Renholm) can be most easily found in 'The ay Today', and 'Brass Target' - spoof TV news shows, that 'ambush' celebrities.
Chris Morris left for prior work commitments. You have to remember that almost all of the people who worked on shows of that time had crossed paths with each other with great friendships gained. You may or may not see him again one day... Matt Berry (Douglas) is fantastic and has been in many many shows of his own. He used to be in The Mighty Boosh with Noel Fielding (Richmond). I saw the live version in my home town many years ago and it was fantastic. You should check out The Mighty Boosh. If you like oddball humour then that's about as odd as it gets. 🤣🤣 Also if you like Star Wars and watched the series Boba Fett, Matt played the voice of the robot 8D8.
Welcome to Matt Berry. A national treasure in Britain. Check out everything he is in…The Mighty Boosh, Garth Marenghi’s Dark Place, Toast of London and What We Do In The Shadows are all great
Chris Morris (denim) is a massive comic in his own right, I presume he had other stuff on. He's famous for a mock news program called "brass eye", and he makes great films too I recommend "4 lions"
Welcome to the world of Matt Berry, life will never be the same.

In amongst all that - he is also a talented musician and singer with his own band. Chris Morriss ( Denholm ) - is also a god of comedy over here - he has written a lot of stuff , deeply dark stuff - The Day Today , Jam etc.
I absolutely loved the lead up to the window scene after at 3:56
you said renholm should run for president as he is less crazy then anyone else you've had.
knowing full well what was coming :')
If wanted to talk about Douglas ever since you started reacting but I was waiting for this episode to avoid spoilers.
i highly doubt Denholm was killed off due to any issues, he was good friends with the shows producer they worked on most of Chris Morris stuff together.
Thanks for giving us another reason to watch this awesome show. Subbed
Matt Berry - Has done a lot of comedy. Toast of London , What we do in the shadows and Garth Marenghi's Darkplace (funny)
We just lit cigarettes in front of teachers and walked out of school grounds to smoke. We didnt do this weird hiding thing.
Did I hear a “fucking hell” (during the playing of the tape) like in Father Ted? 😂
"Douglas" is also in "What we do in the shadows".
The lizard story made my night 😂😂😂
Matt Berry did voice characters from tv shows and movies, but no games uptil know. He is credited as Software engineer or part of Technician team with some.
Yup - you nailed Denholm Reynholm . . . Just in time for him to die 🤣🤣🤣
Lol at the phone chat. There are other manufacturers and P.S. I agree with your dad, avoid Apple or they'll lock you into all their products forever 😅
Douglas won't disappoint you. In a future episode called Bad Boys that scene with Ben Genderson - honestly, I must've watched that a dozen times recently - it always cracks me up. "Let the revels begin!" 😆
Year of the Rabbit is a hilarious show starring Matt Berry.
Also if you like Star Wars and watched the series Boba Fett, Matt played the voice of the robot 8D8.
You missed the very last thing that Douglas was said at end credits, you would have collapsed in the floor lol
25:48 I used to buy rollie papers and take the tobacco out and roll my own. At about 14/15 and then again in University a few years later!
Douglas is the greatest character in the entire history of tv ✌️🏴
The widow is also will's mum from inbetweeners
Toast of London is my favourite comedy with Matt Berry....Bruilliant.
